The Femme-Fatale “Bear’Ing Her Teeth: The Relation Between Women And Animals In Prosper Mérimée’S Lokis, William B. Holley Jan 2024

The Femme-Fatale “Bear’Ing Her Teeth: The Relation Between Women And Animals In Prosper Mérimée’S Lokis, William B. Holley

The Coastal Review

Abstract: Many French fantastic texts from the nineteenth century employ the use of a femme-fatale to highlight and underscore the dangers inherit with the female figure. This can be seen in vampires, ghosts, fairies, and other supernatural phenomena wherein a female character takes on incredible attributes. Propser Mérimée’s Lokis offers readers a tale wherein those same female figures are given traits that resemble the traditional femme-fatale, but in doing so they highlight the deadly nature of the titular half-man/half-bear creature. This paper offers a reading of Lokis which brings together an understanding of the social and political climate in which …

Role Of Edaravone Nanosuspension In Preterm Labor And Birth Outcomes, Sruthi Sarvepalli Jan 2024

Role Of Edaravone Nanosuspension In Preterm Labor And Birth Outcomes, Sruthi Sarvepalli

Theses and Dissertations

Annually, preterm birth (PTB) affects fifteen million infants, posing a significant risk of infant mortality and lifelong disability. Among various triggers, it is well-established that infection-associated oxidative stress and inflammation can induce preterm labor. There is no FDA approved medication for the prevention of PTB except tocolytics which provide marginal benefit at a later stage. Scarcity of therapeutic intervention and unmet medical need propelled us in investigating a novel drug molecule. Our current research is focused on investigating the potential of Edaravone (EDA), an FDA-approved antioxidant and anti-inflammatory medication, in delaying preterm labor and improving neonatal outcomes. Our goal is …

Therapeutic Intervention Of Neuroinflammation In Alzheimer Disease By Inhibition Of Classical Complement Pathway Using Anti-C1r Loaded Exosomes, Terjahna Richards

Theses and Dissertations

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease associated with memory decline and cognitive impairment. It is a growing global health and socioeconomic concern, affecting more than 50 million people worldwide. Current therapeutics focus solely on symptomatic management instead of preventative or curative strategies. This is mainly a result of the complexity of the pathophysiological mechanism and the poor understanding of the disease progression. Recently, studies have focused on bridging knowledge gaps giving rise to substantial evidence on the vital role of neuroinflammation in the progression of AD. Neuroinflammation has been shown to be a precursor to apparent amyloid plaque accumulation …

Hjp 272, An Endothelin Receptor Antagonist, And Its Role In Cancer Cell Migration And Invasion, Nabeela Fatima Baig

Theses and Dissertations

Endothelins are a family of versatile peptides composed of 21 amino acids with three isoforms: ET-1, ET-2, and ET-3. As the most abundant of the three isoforms, ET-1 is involved in various biological processes, such as regulation of vascular tone, humoral homeostasis, and neural crest development. However, focus is now being directed towards investigating the functions of the Endothelin axis in the progression of different tumor types including ovarian, prostate, breast, lungs etc. HJP 272 is a novel ETAR antagonist and while our group has previously researched its effects on lung inflammation and preterm birth, this study marks the first …

Population Characteristics Of The Blue Crab (Callinectes Sapidus) In Rhode Island Coastal Waters, Katherine E. Rodrigue Jan 2024

Population Characteristics Of The Blue Crab (Callinectes Sapidus) In Rhode Island Coastal Waters, Katherine E. Rodrigue

Open Access Master's Theses

The blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) is an emblematic species for much of the mid-Atlantic and Gulf coasts, supporting vital fisheries in these areas. Evidence has shown that many species, including blue crabs, are undergoing northward shifting distributions. This has resulted in speculation about an increasing blue crab population and its capability to support a viable fishery in Rhode Island (USA) coastal waters. Currently, the blue crab is an unassessed species in Rhode Island, and few studies have focused on their population dynamics in the northeast region.

In the first manuscript of this thesis, a Bayesian hierarchical modeling method …

Establishing A Museum At Washington State School For The Blind, Robert J. Schimelpfenig Jan 2024

Establishing A Museum At Washington State School For The Blind, Robert J. Schimelpfenig

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

The Washington State School for the Blind (WSSB) contains archival collections that document over 100 years of school history and student life. These histories are preserved in scrapbooks, news clippings, photographs, and an assortment of bygone assistive technologies that demonstrate the evolution of blind education and its impact on students. As many of these objects have lingered for years in storage, collections from one of the oldest schools for the blind in the Western United States remain hidden. WSSB and the Washington State University (WSU) Vancouver Library have agreed to work together in partnership to establish a museum and archives. …

Constructing Confrontation: Between Constitutional And Evidence Theory, Michael S. Pardo Jan 2024

Constructing Confrontation: Between Constitutional And Evidence Theory, Michael S. Pardo

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

The United States Supreme Court’s decision in Crawford v. Washington was significant as a matter of both constitutional and evidence law. From a constitutional perspective, the opinion was significant because of its “original public meaning” approach to interpreting the text of the Sixth Amendment’s Confrontation Clause. From an evidentiary perspective, the opinion was significant in recognizing a doctrinal rule that potentially excludes evidence in criminal trials that would otherwise be admissible under the Federal Rules of Evidence as well as State evidence laws. This Essay explores Crawford and the subsequent Confrontation Clause cases from these distinct perspectives—illuminated by constitutional and …

Canine-Assisted Cognitive Processing Therapy: Promoting Healing For Veterans Diagnosed With Ptsd Through Canine "Battle Buddies", Shelby L. Meadows

Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects

Trauma related symptoms and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have long been recognized for their connection to military and veteran populations and has become a significant barrier to the provision of mental healthcare. This original contribution to practice explores the significance of Canine Assisted Therapy as a novel approach to treating trauma in veteran and military populations. An extensive literature review examines the current research and discussion on trauma-informed care. It begins with a discussion on evidence-based practices for the treatment of PTSD, including Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. This is followed by a comprehensive …

Clinical Challenges And Experiences: Shared Knowledge From Mental Health Clinicians, Tyler Mcqueen Jan 2024

Clinical Challenges And Experiences: Shared Knowledge From Mental Health Clinicians, Tyler Mcqueen

Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects

Though there is an extensive need for mental health practitioners of child and adolescent psychology, there tends to be a significantly lower number of these providers compared to adult clinicians. For this reason, this study sought to provide emerging child and adolescent clinicians with a point of clinical reference to allow for more efficient and competent services to be provided. This was accomplished by increasing the reader’s foundational knowledge of child and adolescent treatment via a brief historical review, while also increasing the reader’s clinical knowledge/readiness by examining participant reported interventions/insights on the most commonly encountered therapy interfering behaviors, clinical …

What's The Beef With Tax Credits? Feeding California’S Animal Production Industry, Stephanie Don Jan 2024

What's The Beef With Tax Credits? Feeding California’S Animal Production Industry, Stephanie Don

UC Law Business Journal

California’s animal production industry is a powerhouse in the United States food supply chain. In 2021, California generated $12.8 billion in gross cash income from animal production alone, ranking California’s animal production industry as #7 among the states. However, most small farms reported net losses. This paper identifies two financial issues plaguing California’s small farms in the animal production industry: monopolization, and the cost of complying with California’s heightened standard for ethical animal production.

First, the monopolization of small farms is a nationwide issue. In 2022, only four companies controlled 85% of meat packing in the United States. Large companies …

Intergenerational Practices Oral History Project, Christine Marks Jan 2024

Intergenerational Practices Oral History Project, Christine Marks

Open Educational Resources

In this multi-lesson segment, we developed an oral history project on intergenerational practices. We began the semester by framing writing as a conversation to emphasize the dialogical nature of all writing. To prepare students for the practice of deep listening, we discussed an excerpt from Danielle Ofri’s What Patients Say, What Doctors Hear, which highlights the role of the listener as co-creator of meaning. We also discussed the chapter “practice” from Alexis Pauline Gumbs’ Undrowned: Black Feminist Lessons from Marine Mammals, Yiyun Li’s short personal essay “Orange Crush,” and Lily LaMotte and Ann Xu’s graphic novel Measuring Up to …

Cd46 Interaction With Adenovirus Type 64, A Causative Agent For Viral Pink Eye, Hanglin (Henry) Zhu Jan 2024

Cd46 Interaction With Adenovirus Type 64, A Causative Agent For Viral Pink Eye, Hanglin (Henry) Zhu

Honors Theses

Human adenovirus type 64 (Ad64) is a causative agent of contagious viral pink eye. We do not understand why Ad64 causes eye infections. One likely reason is the presence of a receptor molecule on the exposed surface of eye cells, but not other cells. Ad64 binds to a protein called CD46 on the cell surface. We aim to visualize how CD46 binds to the surface of Ad64. I mixed the extracellular portion of CD46 with purified Ad64 virus, then visualized it using negative stain transmission electron microscopy. In order to gain insight into how the virus binds CD46, we used …

Honors Theses

This study investigated the effects of positive anticipation on depression-like symptoms in Long Evans male and female rats, using Unpredictable Positive Experience Response (UPER) training. Rats that received UPER training (UPER group) were exposed to cues followed by a positive reward at random times, fostering anticipation of three different positive experiences. Along with the UPER rats, there was a group of rats that received positive rewards without anticipation (ENR group) and a group that received no positive reward or anticipation (CTRL group). After 7 weeks of behavioral… training, we examined how training impacted the animal’s cognition, emotional resilience, and neurobiological …

La Perception Et La Représentation Du Corps Des Femmes Africaines Par Rapport À La Colonisation Française, Mofiyinfoluwa Tunji-Ekundayo Jan 2024

La Perception Et La Représentation Du Corps Des Femmes Africaines Par Rapport À La Colonisation Française, Mofiyinfoluwa Tunji-Ekundayo

Honors Theses

The thesis proposes an analysis of the perception that the French colonizers had towards the bodies of black women in France, women from northern Africa, and women from western Africa. Then, the work evaluates how this perception manifests in current French and francophone media. Furthermore, it traces how much influence these perceptions have on the depiction and representation of African female bodies. This influence could manifest as a reinforcement or an opposition to colonial perceptions.

Shifting Grounds: Movement And Continuity In Mustang, Nepal, Lauren Carter Jan 2024

Shifting Grounds: Movement And Continuity In Mustang, Nepal, Lauren Carter

Honors Theses

This thesis explores the socio-cultural and economic transformations in the Mustang region of Nepal. Drawing from fieldwork conducted over a month, this study examines how traditional economic activities, particularly yak herding, are being replaced by tourism and agriculture due to shifting socio-economic conditions and global influences. The concept of 'adaptive traditionality' is introduced to describe how the community in Mustang actively engages with both internal pressures and external changes to reshape their socio-cultural landscape. This adaptability is evident in the transition from nomadic pastoralism to more sedentary agricultural practices and tourism, which not only reflects a survival tactic but also …

Realizing The Right To Food In Maine: Insights From International Law, Smita Narula Jan 2024

Realizing The Right To Food In Maine: Insights From International Law, Smita Narula

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

In November 2021, Maine made history as the first U.S. state to constitutionally recognize the right to food. Maine’s right to food amendment— which sought to address widespread food insecurity and corporate control of the food supply—proclaims food as a “natural, inherent and unalienable right,” and empowers Mainers to grow and consume food of their own choosing, affirming their right to food sovereignty. This Article makes three key contributions to scholarly examinations of this historic amendment. First, it situates the amendment within the broader landscape of domestic and global struggles for the right to food and food sovereignty. Second, the …

Receipt Of Follow‑Up Care Plans On Colorectal Cancer Screening Among Breast, Prostate, And Lung Cancer Survivors, Meng-Han Tsai, Malcolm S. Bevel, Sydney E. Andrzejak, Justin X. Moore Jan 2024

Receipt Of Follow‑Up Care Plans On Colorectal Cancer Screening Among Breast, Prostate, And Lung Cancer Survivors, Meng-Han Tsai, Malcolm S. Bevel, Sydney E. Andrzejak, Justin X. Moore

Behavioral Science Faculty Publications

Purpose Our study aimed to examine whether receipt of follow-up care plans is associated with greater guideline-concordant CRC screening stratified by breast, prostate, and lung cancer survivors.

Methods We used data from years 2016, 2018, and 2020 of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System on 3339 eligible treatment-utilizing cancer survivors with complete treatment. We performed descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic regression to examine the mentioned association.

Results We observed that 83.9% of breast and 88.2% of prostate cancer survivors with follow-care plans received CRC screening (p-value < 0.001). The lowest CRC screening use was observed among lung cancer (70.8%). In multivariable analysis, receipt of follow-up care plans was strongly associated with greater odds of receiving CRC screening in breast (OR, 2.67; 95% CI: 1.71–4.16) and prostate (OR, 3.81; 95% CI: 2.30–6.31) cancer survivors. Regardless of provider type, 84 to 88% reduced likelihood of receipt of CRC screening when they received follow-up care plans among lung cancer survivors. Among those without follow-up care plans, breast (OR, 0.29; 95% CI: 0.09–0.92) and lung (OR, 0.05; 95% CI: 0.01–0.25) cancer survivors who received care from general practices were less likely to receive CRC screening compared to those who received care from non-general practices.

Conclusions Receipt of follow-up care plans was associated with greater CRC screening use in …

Working Memory And Inhibitory Control Deficits In Children With Adhd: An Experimental Evaluation Of Competing Model Predictions, Michael J. Kofler, Nicole B. Groves, Elizabeth S.M. Chan, Carolyn L. Marsh, Alissa M. Cole, Fatou Gaye, Enrique Cibrian, Miho O. Tatsuki, Leah J. Singh Jan 2024

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Introduction: Children with ADHD demonstrate difficulties on many different neuropsychological tests. However, it remains unclear whether this pattern reflects a large number of distinct deficits or a small number of deficit(s) that broadly impact test performance. The current study is among the first experiments to systematically manipulate demands on both working memory and inhibition, with implications for competing conceptual models of ADHD pathogenesis. Method: A clinically evaluated, carefully phenotyped sample of 110 children with ADHD, anxiety disorders, or co-occurring ADHD+anxiety (Mage=10.35, 44 girls; 69% White Not Hispanic/Latino) completed a counterbalanced, double dissociation experiment, with two tasks each per inhibition (low …

Gender Roles In Natural Resource Use In Madagascar, Sarahana Shrestha, Cortni Borgerson, Be Jean Rodolph Rasolofoniaina Jan 2024

Gender Roles In Natural Resource Use In Madagascar, Sarahana Shrestha, Cortni Borgerson, Be Jean Rodolph Rasolofoniaina

Department of Anthropology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Understanding gender roles in natural resource use is essential for culturally-tailored effective conservation. Despite its conservation priority, little is known about the gender roles of forest product use in Madagascar. This study used over seven years of data from 1,255 interviews on the extraction, use, and sale of forest, freshwater, and marine resources, to examine gender roles. We found that gender significantly affects natural resource use in Madagascar. While men were primarily responsible for natural resource collection, women collected nearly all resources in at least one household. Both genders collected resources, with subsistence use as the primary incentive for resource …

Alexander The Lynkestian And The Thracians At Thebes: A Note On The Tale Of Timokleia, Sulochana Asirvatham Jan 2024

Alexander The Lynkestian And The Thracians At Thebes: A Note On The Tale Of Timokleia, Sulochana Asirvatham

Department of Classics and General Humanities Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The Thracians are a well-attested part of the Alexander’s army in Asia. But when, exactly, did they appear in the king’s force? The question is prompted by the story of Timokleia of Thebes, which is found in Plutarch (Alex. 12; De mul. virt. 24) and Polyainos (8.40) and happens to be the only source for Thracian presence in the Macedonian army before the Hellespont. During the Macedonian destruction of Thebes in summer 335, Timokleia is raped by a Thracian or a leader of the Thracians. The story is evidently designed to ennoble the figures of Alexander and Timokleia as idealized …

The Influence Of Celebrity Endorsers On Brands' Perceived Warmth And Competence, Helene Gilis Jan 2024

The Influence Of Celebrity Endorsers On Brands' Perceived Warmth And Competence, Helene Gilis

Honors Program Theses

The utilization of celebrity endorsers has become a prevalent strategy among marketers in recent years, serving to enhance brand communication and audience engagement. This study examines the dynamic relationships of celebrity endorsements, specifically investigating the impact of perceived warmth and competence on celebrity endorsers through the stereotype content model (SCM). The model was introduced to fill the research gap in a marketing context on the influence of the perceived warmth and confidence of endorsers on the perception of brands and, subsequently, consumer behavior. Furthermore, the research evaluates the consequential effect of brand image on key brand elements, including purchase intention, …

Practically Pooh In Every Way: A Look At Disney's Effect On Winnie-The-Pooh Pre- And Post- Public Domain, Peyton Poitras

Honors Program Theses

On Jan. 1, 2022, A.A. Milne’s willy, nilly, silly old bear entered the public domain, but this paper will argue why Disney's version will most likely retain its longevity despite additional competition. Disney's franchise-ation of Winnie the Pooh has left their iteration of the bear at the forefront of audience's minds. While Disney's version retains its iconic image of the bear, however, the release of the character into the public domain will allow others to utilize the bear in new ways. Such opens the door to a new question: How should characters be treated after entering the public domain? This …
