Good Readers, Good Writers, And Ai: Tool, Collaborator, Author?, Katherine Jung
Good Readers, Good Writers, And Ai: Tool, Collaborator, Author?, Katherine Jung
Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) systems have revolutionized the world of creative writing. Beyond providing simple grammar or spelling assistance, the most advanced of these systems can now play a collaborative role in the writing process, increasing productivity while pushing content in new and surprising directions. AI-generated creativity raises compelling questions in the context of copyright law, which has long been predicated on the assumption of human authorship. The capacity of AI to one day generate writing at a level of mastery on par with human beings complicates traditional notions of creativity, the protection of which the entire copy …
Connection In An Age Of Connectivity: An Evaluation Of Synchronous And Asynchronous Law Classrooms, Mary Kate Kearney, Miranda E. Thompson
Connection In An Age Of Connectivity: An Evaluation Of Synchronous And Asynchronous Law Classrooms, Mary Kate Kearney, Miranda E. Thompson
Western New England Law Review
As the world was thrust into a global pandemic, legal education was forced to confront the evolution of technological teaching modalities. While these technological advances allowed legal education to prosper in the short-term emergency education situation, their continued use creates barriers between the student and teacher which diminishes a student’s ability to develop critical lawyering skills. Based on our own roles as professor and student, we agree that deviating from in-person education will have detrimental effects for teachers and students and will undermine the collaborative relationship of the classroom. Legal institutions have refined in-person teaching methods, such as the Socratic …

Developing Geopolymer-Based Adsorptive Materials For Nutrient Removal From Agricultural Runoff And Drainage, Gabrielle Jacquelle Savoir
Developing Geopolymer-Based Adsorptive Materials For Nutrient Removal From Agricultural Runoff And Drainage, Gabrielle Jacquelle Savoir
Dissertations
With the rise of population placing strain on food supplies and the failure of current prevention strategies to mitigate effects of agricultural pollution, research is needed to develop new technologies for the removal and recovery of nutrients from agricultural runoff and drainage. Geopolymer, an alkali-silicate material polymerized within an acidic or alkaline medium, is promising as an adsorptive substrate due to its multifaceted customizability, cost effectiveness, and adsorptive properties. Hence, the objective of this research was to develop porous metakaolin (MK) geopolymer based adsorptive materials with high affinities for phosphate and ammonium/ammonia to act as nutrient control within agricultural runoff …
Epigenetic Regulation Of Cancer Testis Antigens In Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Rinrada Klankajorn
Epigenetic Regulation Of Cancer Testis Antigens In Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Rinrada Klankajorn
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) represents one of the most common causes of cancer-related death worldwide, with few available treatment options. Cancer-testis antigens (CTAs), notably from the MAGE gene family, have opened new possibilities for improving immunotherapy in HCC due to their tumor-specific expression and high immunogenicity. However, the mechanisms regulating MAGE gene expression are largely unknown. This study explored mechanisms controlling the expression of MAGE-A3 and MAGE-C2. We utilized HCC organoid cultures derived from patient HCC tissues known to represent cancer epigenetic status more accurately than cell lines to study the MAGE gene family expression patterns and promoter methylation patterns. Our …

Acute Toxicity Study Of Canine Mesenchymal Stem Cell (Msc)-Derived Exosome Preparation For Drug Registration, Anatcha Thongsit
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Exosomes, spherical vesicles secreted by cells containing diverse biomolecules, are gaining attention in veterinary medicine. Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-derived exosomes show promise for treating animal diseases. However, their safety profile, particularly the acute toxicity of canine MSC-derived exosomes, has yet to be adequately explored. This study evaluates the acute toxicity of canine MSC-derived exosomes on rat systemic health, adhering to ISO 10993-11 guidelines for systemic toxicity testing to support veterinary drug registration and development. The study tested acute toxicity in five female Sprague Dawley rats by administering exosomes at a concentration of 1×109 particles/mL via intravenous injection into the tail …
Expression Optimization And Characterization Of Plant-Produced Human Interleukin-15, Chalatorn Charnsatabut
Expression Optimization And Characterization Of Plant-Produced Human Interleukin-15, Chalatorn Charnsatabut
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Human interleukin-15 (hIL-15) is a cytokine that plays a crucial role in immune responses like T cell proliferation, activation, and prolongation of natural killer (NK) cells. This cytokine also impacts the cell proliferation of human adult low calcium temperature (HaCaT) keratinocytes which can lead to the wound-healing effect. This study aimed to optimize the expression and characterize the recombinant hIL-15 in Nicotiana benthamiana with the Agrobacterium-mediated transient expression system. The hIL-15 gene was fused with the Fc domain from the IgG1 antibody for purification. The expression cassette was optimized for sub-cellular targeting and agroinfiltration. The transiently expressed hIL-15-Fc was purified …
Molecular Mechanism Of Lusianthridin On Platelet Aggregation Inhibition And Endothelial Cell Protection, Fozia -
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Lusianthridin (LST), a bioactive compound isolated from Dendrobium venustum, exhibits notable vasoprotective properties. This study aimed to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms of LST by evaluating its effects on platelet function and endothelial cell activation in vitro. In human platelets, LST significantly inhibited collagen-induced aggregation, an effect associated with elevated phosphorylation of vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein (VASP) and suppression of Akt phosphorylation. In EA.hy926 endothelial cells, LST attenuated tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α)-induced endothelial dysfunction by reducing nitric oxide (NO) production and suppressing the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β). Mechanistic investigations revealed that LST inhibited key inflammatory signaling …

Effect Of An Mrna Vaccine On Liver-Associated Macrophages And The Immunogenicity Of Ag85b-Mrna Vaccine Against Tuberculosis, Chitsuda Pongma
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
A new vaccine technology based on the delivery of mRNA has gained widespread acceptance due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The delivery of mRNA formulated with lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) elicits a robust immune response, activating both humoral and cell-mediated response. Depending on the LNP formula, mRNA encoding proteins can be detected in the liver upon intramuscular (IM) administration in mice. Thus, an mRNA vaccine present novel platform for new vaccines for infection diseases, including tuberculosis (TB). This study proposed two major goals to investigate the impact of an mRNA vaccine on innate immune cells in the liver and the use of …

Immune Signaling And Pathogenesis Of Enterocytozoon Hepatopenaei Infection In Pacific White Shrimp Litopenaeus Vannamei, Nutthapon Sangklai
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP) is an intracellular microsporidian parasite causing hepatopancreatic microsporidiosis (HPM), a disease that impairs the digestion and nutrients absorption of shrimp and leads to growth retardation and size variation. Our studies aim to comprehensively investigate the host’s immune responses to the EHP infection and the pathogenesis of the parasite. It was found that genes in Toll and JAK/STAT pathways, as well as antimicrobial peptides, were highly upregulated upon the EHP infection. Importantly, suppression of the JAK/STAT pathways resulted in a significant reduction of the c-type lysozyme (LvLyz-c) expression and the elevation of EHP copy numbers. These indicate a …
Development Of Electrochemical Sensor Based On Molecularly Imprinted Polymer For Determination Of Roxarsone, Pitranan Kunthanasap
Development Of Electrochemical Sensor Based On Molecularly Imprinted Polymer For Determination Of Roxarsone, Pitranan Kunthanasap
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Roxarsone (ROX), a growth enhancer in poultry and swine, has the potential to improve weight gain and prevent coccidiosis. Excessive use of ROX may lead to its accumulation in animal tissues, potentially contaminating food products and posing health risks to humans through consumption. This research aims to develop an electrochemical sensor based on a magnetic screen-printed graphene electrode (mSPGE) modified with a highly selective molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) for the determination of ROX with enhanced sensitivity and selectivity. Typically, an applied magnetic field at the mSPGE could accelerate mass transport at the electrode surface through the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effect, leading …
(2024) Different Maps, Same Territory: Dialogical Self Theory And Its Predecessors, David Kennedy
(2024) Different Maps, Same Territory: Dialogical Self Theory And Its Predecessors, David Kennedy
Collected Papers of David Kennedy
Dialogical Self Theory has not emerged in a historical vacuum. Its fore-runners, whether the Eastern Atman, the tripartite Platonic self with itsclear hierarchical relations, the Cartesian “ghost in the machine,” theFreudian ego-id hydraulic model or the Jungian topography of ego andunconscious, represent the theoretical grounding from which the dia-logical self has emerged and self-articulated as much as have WilliamJames, George Herbert Mead and Mikel Bakhtin. Most of them, includ-ing DST, center on developmental models, and see the self as intrinsi-cally oriented toward a more integrated sense of itself that Jung called“wholeness,” although their internal politics differ. Plato is an authoritar-ian, …

Illustrating The Fantastic: Cross-Writing Illustrations In British Children’S Literature Of The Golden Age, Stephanie Montalti
Illustrating The Fantastic: Cross-Writing Illustrations In British Children’S Literature Of The Golden Age, Stephanie Montalti
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation argues that British children’s literature of the Golden Age addresses children and adults through their illustrations. It considers why the nineteenth century experienced a proliferation in fantasy and illustration, as well as why Golden Age children’s texts appeal to mixed-age audiences. Through an application of the term “cross-writing,” I argue that the Golden Age of children’s literature did not think of audiences in a binary manner, as some children’s literature scholars tend to assert. Instead, they used the dual mode of textual and visual narration to complicate the boundaries between childhood and adulthood. I also offer an original …
Exploring The Dual Role Of Vegf165 In Bleomycin Induced Lung Injury And Recovery In A Aav Mice Model, Igor Ban
Exploring The Dual Role Of Vegf165 In Bleomycin Induced Lung Injury And Recovery In A Aav Mice Model, Igor Ban
Theses and Dissertations
Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) poses a significant challenge in respiratory medicine due to its complex etiology and progression characterized by excessive lung scarring, leading to compromised pulmonary function. The multifaceted roles of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor A (VEGF-A) and specifically its isoform VEGF-A165 are critical in this context, given their involvement in angiogenesis, lymphangiogenesis, and tissue repair. The dual nature of VEGF-A165, promoting angiogenesis and potentially exacerbating or mitigating fibrosis, underscores its significance in both the progression and recovery phases of PF. Our work, explores the nuanced functions of VEGF-A165 using AAV1 as a gene delivery vector to overexpress this growth …
A Quality-By-Design Approach For The Development Of Inhalable Dry Powders For Tuberculosis (Tb) Treatment, Suyash M. Patil
A Quality-By-Design Approach For The Development Of Inhalable Dry Powders For Tuberculosis (Tb) Treatment, Suyash M. Patil
Theses and Dissertations
Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb), remains a pressing concern globally. The emergence of drug-resistant strains and the need for prolonged treatment regimens continue to complicate disease management. Innovative therapeutic strategies are urgently required to enhance treatment efficacy, improve patient adherence, and minimize adverse effects. Toward this, strategies involving use of drug combinations, reducing dosing frequencies, and targeting TB-infected cells are gaining attention. In my dissertation, we explored the combination therapy involving two FDA-approved anti-TB drugs, Bedaquiline (BDQ) and Pretomanid (PTD). The BDQ-PTD combination reduced minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), compared to individual drugs and demonstrated additive/synergistic effects at 1:4 …
Disclosure Puzzles In Patent Law, Jonathan S. Masur, Lisa Larrimore Ouellette
Disclosure Puzzles In Patent Law, Jonathan S. Masur, Lisa Larrimore Ouellette
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
Since its inception, patent law has required that inventors publicly disclose information about their inventions in exchange for receiving patent rights. This foundational requirement is policed through multiple doctrines: patents fail enablement if “undue experimentation” is needed to practice the invention, and they lack adequate written description when they fail to establish the inventor’s “possession” of the invention.
Despite disclosure doctrines’ centrality, fundamental puzzles about their application remain unresolved. What are the boundaries between enablement and written description? Do equivalents claimed via the doctrine of equivalents have to be enabled or described? Are the rules different for after-arising technologies? Federal …
Admissions Essays After Sffa, Sonja B. Starr
Admissions Essays After Sffa, Sonja B. Starr
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
The Supreme Court concluded its 2023 decision barring affirmative action in university admissions with a qualification: although they may not give weight to “race qua race,” universities may consider individual applicants’ discussion of race-related life experience that bears on their strengths and potential. This “essay carveout” provides a potential path forward for universities (and other entities to which the affirmative-action ban may eventually apply). But the Court also warned against using it to enact “indirect” affirmative action, and legal advocates of colorblindness stand poised to challenge any use of essays that appears to stray over this line. So where is …
The Geopolitics Of Digital Regulation, Aziz Z. Huq
The Geopolitics Of Digital Regulation, Aziz Z. Huq
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
Contemporary regulation of digital technologies by nation-states unfolds under a darkening shadow of geopolitical competition. The United States government operates simultaneously in a domestic political environment dominated by oligopolistic firms competing to expand, and in an international political environment wherein it competes with other sovereign nations by cultivating and deploying digital technological capacities for geostrategic ends. Thanks to the ensuing cross-cutting pressures, national and supranational regulation can take on surprisingly reticulated, even baroque or perverse, forms.
Three recent monographs offer illuminating and complementary maps of these geopolitical conflicts and the national responses to digital technologies upon which they rest. One …
Long Term Trends In Mortality Rates Of A Smallmouth Bass Population, Caleb D. Anderson
Long Term Trends In Mortality Rates Of A Smallmouth Bass Population, Caleb D. Anderson
Journal of Earth and Life Science
Smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieu are known as a popular sport fish for anglers. When a known smallmouth bass fishery appears to have a dwindling population, it raises questions about the population health. A common indicator of the health of the population is the mortality rate. By comparing mortality, conclusions can be made on whether smallmouth bass are dying at a different rate in the system over time. Therefore, the objective of this study was to see if there had been a significant change in smallmouth bass mortality over a span of thirty years in Round Lake (DOW:010204), Aitkin County, Minnesota. …
Relationship Between Northern Pike And Walleye Cpue In Minnesota Lakes, Simon Oslund
Relationship Between Northern Pike And Walleye Cpue In Minnesota Lakes, Simon Oslund
Journal of Earth and Life Science
Northern pike Esox lucius and walleye Sander vitreus are both top predators in freshwater systems. Due to their predatorial nature, high populations of one species can prohibit populations of the other species from thriving, specifically northern pike foraging on walleye. This information is tracked by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources through catch per unit effort (CPUE). CPUE data was gathered for all lakes in Beltrami County, Minnesota, and a regression analysis was done to test for a relationship between pike and walleye. It was found that the relationship between northern pike and walleye CPUE was significant (P = 0.02). …
The Effects Of Length, Weight, Age, And Gender On Mercury Concentrations In Burbot In North-Central Minnesota Lakes, Liam Hanley
The Effects Of Length, Weight, Age, And Gender On Mercury Concentrations In Burbot In North-Central Minnesota Lakes, Liam Hanley
Journal of Earth and Life Science
Burbot Lota lota in north-central Minnesota lakes have the potential to reach large sizes and consume large volumes of prey. This caveat may make burbot susceptible to higher rates of biocontamination, bioaccumulation and biomagnification. The objective of this study was to determine how changes in age, length, gender, weight, and lake affect total mercury concentrations in burbot. In this experiment 28 burbot were angled from three lakes: Cass (n = 17), Winnibigoshish (n = 4), and Bad Medicine (n = 7). Then tissue samples were taken from each fish and were lyophilized and homogenized. Homogenized tissue samples were analyzed by …
Relationship Between Fishing Hours And Number Of Fish Harvested From Upper Red Lake, Dylan Ohlenkamp
Relationship Between Fishing Hours And Number Of Fish Harvested From Upper Red Lake, Dylan Ohlenkamp
Journal of Earth and Life Science
Total hours fishermen spend fishing and total amount of fish harvested per year are some of the most important pieces of knowledge gained from creel surveys. They provide crucial information that assesses fisheries mortality and pressure. MN DNR uses their results from creel surveys to improve or impose regulations, and to maintain healthy fisheries. Based on results from similar studies, there is expected to be a positive relationship between hours fished and fish harvested. To determine the relationship between these two variables on Upper Red Lake, data from two years were selected when the variables were at their highest and …
A Guide To Otoliths Of Minnesota Fishes, Baylor J. Short
A Guide To Otoliths Of Minnesota Fishes, Baylor J. Short
Journal of Earth and Life Science
Investigations into the diet patterns of piscivores can provide crucial information on predator-prey relationships, population dynamics, and responses to changing ecosystems. However, digestive processes often remove or alter physical characteristics that are traditionally used to identify consumed fish. This problem has been addressed to some degree with advances in molecular technologies, although these methods can be costly and require specific training and equipment to do so. In contrast, bony structures such as otoliths, vertebrae, cleithra, and others frequently have morphologies that are unique among families, genera, and species. Because these structures are resistant to digestion, they can be used to …
The Effect Of Triaenophorus Crassus On The Condition Of Coregonus Artedi, Alexander Surma
The Effect Of Triaenophorus Crassus On The Condition Of Coregonus Artedi, Alexander Surma
Journal of Earth and Life Science
Cisco Coregonus artedi is, historically, the largest commercial fishery in the Great Lakes. The species is also important to commercial and recreational fisheries in inland lakes. Tapeworm Triaenophorus crassus larvae embed themselves into the flesh of Ciscoes, rendering the fish unmarketable to humans. Triaenophorus crassus is common in inland waters such as Leech Lake and Cass Lake, MN. One Canadian researcher has suggested that the parasite negatively affects the growth and weight of Ciscoes. Poor condition can reduce fecundity, leading to lower recruitment rates. This would mean a detrimental impact on not only individual fish, but the health of …
Global Communities: The Potential Of Street Art And The Public Space, Elena Picech
Global Communities: The Potential Of Street Art And The Public Space, Elena Picech
The Coastal Review
This paper highlights the significance of physical proximity and the potentiality of socio-spatial situations as tools to enrich study abroad programs. Particular attention is given to street art and the public space. While, studying on-site can be somewhat uncomfortable, it can potentially prompt unique reflections, enhance student’s learning and encourage introspection. Being on-site provides the opportunity to come into contact and to connect with the physical objects and their environment. It enables a multisensory and immersive embodied experience. Leveraging art for communicative educational activities can facilitate a participatory experience, promote critical thinking and enhance cultural understanding.
