خربة طيرية مستوطنة ريفية في الجليل / Khirbat Ṭireya: A Rural Settlement In Galilee, Omar Zidan
خربة طيرية مستوطنة ريفية في الجليل / Khirbat Ṭireya: A Rural Settlement In Galilee, Omar Zidan
Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
Khirbat Ṭireya is located on a hilltop in the Nazareth Mountain range in Galilee, extending over an area of c. 10 dunams. The excavation results pointed to a settlement process that began in early Iron Age II (1000–900 BCE). In the first phase, several rural dwellings were erected, consisting of several parallel longitudinal spaces. The settlement developed in late Iron Age II, when a number of simple buildings were erected, consisting of three parallel spaces separated by two rows of columns, which may be identified as “Three-room houses.” The pottery from this period is simple, both in shape and absence …

Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
Salvage excavations at Ḥorbat Midras (Khirbat Darousia), located within the ‘Adulam Caves Park, in the center of the Judean Shephelah, uncovered seven building phases, revealing evidence of a settlement inhabited simultaneously and sequentially by Jews, Christians and Muslims. The earliest settlement dated from the late Second Temple period (first century BCE–first century CE) to the Bar Kokhba Revolt, and included rock-cut buildings and installations, such as caves, ritual baths (miqwa’ot), hiding complexes, columbarium and agricultural installations. The most important discovery at the site was a magnificent church dating to the Byzantine period. The church was a west–east oriented basilica, with …

Rhizophora Mangle (Red Mangrove) Seedling Success In Different Habitats In Mosquito Lagoon, Florida, Usa, Mekail N. Negash
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
Mangroves provide many ecosystem services in coastal environments around the world. These include water quality improvement, creating habitats for terrestrial and aquatic species, and stabilizing shorelines. In central Florida, the red mangrove Rhizophora mangle is a common species in coastal wetlands, and recently the number of individuals successfully recruiting to intertidal oyster reefs has greatly increased, possibly because biogeochemical hot spots are present on oyster reefs due to nutrient-rich biodeposits from the live oysters. To understand how well R. mangle responds in terms of survival and growth to the suite of variables associated within these two unique habitats, I tracked …
Spotting The Signs: An Investigation Of The Effectiveness Of A Peer Training Program In Increasing Students' Ability To Detect And Report The Warning Signs Of A Peer School Shooting Plot, Ashley T. Winch
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
To date, there are no evidence-based peer bystander intervention trainings (BIT) aimed at educating peers in school shooting warning behaviors. The purpose of this study was to examine an interactive BIT where peers were taught warning behaviors related to someone planning a school shooting and how to report this information. This training was evaluated against a currently available training method (i.e., PowerPoint presentation based) and a control group to determine the best training approach. College students between 18 and 19 years old (N = 57) completed pre, post, and one-month follow-up assessments. At each timepoint accuracy in detection of …
Is This The Real Life, Or Is This Just Fantasy? Assessing Species Distribution Model Realism And Applicability With Virtual And Empirical Species, Hannah R. Bevan
Is This The Real Life, Or Is This Just Fantasy? Assessing Species Distribution Model Realism And Applicability With Virtual And Empirical Species, Hannah R. Bevan
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
Species distribution models (SDMs) can be important tools for proactive conservation management if they are realistic. Unfortunately, achieving and assessing SDM realism is challenging given the general limitations of scientific models and empirical species data. We addressed the issue of achieving realism with high model quality and reproducibility by reviewing 200 SDMs and cataloguing methods for data availability, response and predictor variables, model fitting, and model performance. We addressed the issue of assessing SDM realism by comparing known and predicted distributions of habitat suitability with simulated data for various model fitting choices. Finally, we applied and compared subsequent lessons to …

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
Drawing upon traumatic moments of my past as a catalyst, I pursue understanding and acceptance of physical and emotional pain. In this thesis body of work, I employ the intersection of industrial and body imagery in sculptural forms and installation as a corporeal and allegorical account of my lived experience using visual narratives of trepidation and metamorphosis. In my creative practice, I incorporate various materials that create a reference of specific moments from my past. The artworks draw from principles rooted in Buddhism, affect theory, phenomenology, and materiality; incorporating them as tools to comprehend my position in the world and …

Classification Of Sow Postures Using Convolutional Neural Network And Depth Images, Md Towfiqur Rahman, Tami M. Brown-Brandl, Gary A. Rohrer, Sudhendu R. Sharma, Yeyin Shi
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
The United States swine industry reports an average preweaning mortality of approximately 16% where approximately 6% of them are attributed to piglets overlayed by sows. Detecting postural transitions and estimating sows’ time budgets for different postures are valuable information for breeders and engineering design of farrowing facilities to eventually reduce piglet death. Computer vision tools can help monitor changes in animal posture accurately and efficiently. To create a more robust system and eliminate varying lighting issues within a day including daytime/ nighttime differences, there is an advantage to using depth cameras over digital cameras. In this study, a computer vision …
Stream Restoration Effectiveness In Mullins Creek In Fayetteville, Arkansas, Amadeo Scott, Shannon Speir
Stream Restoration Effectiveness In Mullins Creek In Fayetteville, Arkansas, Amadeo Scott, Shannon Speir
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
Lotic waterways are vital for habitat, food, water, and flood protection, but urbanization poses a major threat to their integrity. Runoff from urban surfaces leads to pollution, flashiness, loss of biodiversity, and other symptoms, also known as Urban Stream Syndrome (USS). Streams can be restored in order to combat USS, but most restorations are not monitored, so their long-term effectiveness is unknown. This study quantitatively evaluated a decade-old stream restoration in Fayetteville, Arkansas, to assess its effectiveness in combating USS and achieving set restoration goals, and to gain insights for future restoration projects. Restoration goals included decreasing erosion and sedimentation, …
Evaluating Efficiency And Accuracy Of Three Texture Analysis Methods For Blackberry Fruit, Rhys M. Brock, Carmen Johns, Katelyn Lust-Moore, Margaret Worthington
Evaluating Efficiency And Accuracy Of Three Texture Analysis Methods For Blackberry Fruit, Rhys M. Brock, Carmen Johns, Katelyn Lust-Moore, Margaret Worthington
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
A major objective of the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture (UADA) Fruit Breeding program is to improve the texture of blackberry (Rubus subgenus Rubus Watson). Blackberry varieties with improved fruit firmness transport and store well and may maintain superior quality under challenging postharvest conditions than softer varieties. Increased firmness may also make cultivars less susceptible to red drupelet reversion (RDR), a postharvest disorder of blackberries in which fully black drupelets revert to red after harvest. This research project aims to assess the efficiency and accuracy of three methods applied in evaluating blackberry firmness. The study compares instrumental analysis …

Fugitive And Sumud Encounters: Geographies Of Black-Palestinian Transnational Refusal, Anna Babboni
Fugitive And Sumud Encounters: Geographies Of Black-Palestinian Transnational Refusal, Anna Babboni
Scripps Senior Theses
“Fugitive and Sumud Encounters: Geographies of Black-Palestinian Transnational Refusal” explores the parallel practices of Palestinian sumud, a “political-psycho-affective subjectivity” or philosophy of refusal that roughly translates to “steadfastness” from Arabic, and Black fugitivity, the practice by which Black folk find freedom and escape from the continual construction of Blackness as fungible object, rooted in histories of maroonage. Both practices of refusal are historically and spatially contingent, responding to conditions of settler colonial and anti-Black enclosure. However, when put into conversion, sumud and fugitivity are strikingly familiar in their methods of refusing liberal enclosure. In their overlap, sumud and fugitivity lay …
Synthesis, Characterization, And Performance Assessment Of Reusable And Biodegradable Antimicrobial Polymeric Membranes For Aerosolized Pathogen Inactivation And Filtration, Ebuka Ogbuoji
Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering
Air filtration technology has proven effective in purifying air by trapping particulates which can cause adverse health effects. High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters, capable of capturing over 99.99% of PM0.3, are recommended for critical applications. However, conventional non-woven HEPA filters rely on electrostatic interactions to trap smaller particles, which can deplete over time or after cleaning, reducing filtration efficiency and posing health risks. Additionally, these filters contribute to plastic waste.
This dissertation investigated the feasibility of using flat sheet polymeric membranes fabricated via nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) as reusable and biodegradable alternatives to commercially available non-biodegradable air …

Turmoil and unrest are often cited as root forms of inspiration for artistic pieces representing the period in which they take place. Take the punk rock explosion in the mid to late 70s, graffiti, and Frida Kahlo paintings, for example. If we are to see art as the language of people, we must then see public art as the language of the public. These pieces often become instrumental to the movements they support as they do not tell onlookers what to feel, but rather, depict it.
One such piece, a reworking of the National Anthem performed by Jimi Hendrix at …
Fda Modernization Act 2.0: The Beginning Of The End For Animal Testing In Drug Development, Julia Williams
Fda Modernization Act 2.0: The Beginning Of The End For Animal Testing In Drug Development, Julia Williams
Animal Law Review
Historical drug testing protocols utilized animal testing to determine whether drugs were safe and effective for use in humans. However, recognizing that testing drugs on other species is potentially dangerous for humans, troubled by failures, unnecessarily expensive, and time consuming, the FDA Modernization Act 2.0, passed in December 2022, removed animal testing as a requirement for new drug applications. While this was an important step forward, a notable failure of that Act is that it did not go far enough to end animal testing. Accordingly, this Article proposes an FDA Modernization Act 3.0.
The FDA Modernization Act 3.0 would ensure …
Neither Covered Nor Excluded: Impacts Of Speciesism On Aquatic Animal Experimentation Under The Animal Welfare Act, Sophia Pastorini
Neither Covered Nor Excluded: Impacts Of Speciesism On Aquatic Animal Experimentation Under The Animal Welfare Act, Sophia Pastorini
Animal Law Review
Despite significant scientific evidence affirming their capacity for pain and pleasure, aquatic animals in laboratory settings receive limited federal protection. The Animal Welfare Act leaves aquatic animals entirely adrift; they are neither included in the list of protected animals nor explicitly excluded. They inhabit a realm so marginalized that they are not even mentioned in the Act. The urgency of safeguarding aquatic animal welfare is a matter of moral imperative, scientific integrity, and justice. By employing a multifaceted approach that combines ethical considerations and legal frameworks, this Article seeks to catalyze change in the treatment of aquatic animals in research …
De-Myth-Ifying Laboratory Animal Law: The Truth Behind Four Commonly Misunderstood Facts In Laboratory Animal Welfare Law, Rebecca Critser
De-Myth-Ifying Laboratory Animal Law: The Truth Behind Four Commonly Misunderstood Facts In Laboratory Animal Welfare Law, Rebecca Critser
Animal Law Review
The subspeciality of laboratory animal law presents unique difficulties because it requires familiarity with two highly specialized fields: law and science. Consequently, it is not surprising that some aspects of laboratory animal law have been misunderstood. This Article highlights four such misunderstandings surrounding laboratory animal law and provides an explanation of the truth behind each myth. The myths discussed include: (1) the AWA is the only federal law applicable to laboratory animals; (2) states are preempted from regulating the laboratory animal space; (3) birds, rats, and mice are not covered under federal law; and (4) the 3Rs are explicitly required …

Fr1: Comics, Cyborgs, And “In Between” Identities, Ella Lehavi
Scripps Senior Theses
As a queer Jew who grew up surrounded by immigrant cultures and communities, I find myself in a liminal space between my identities and the dominant culture of my country– one where my perspective on gender and my cultural experiences aren’t fully understood by the world I exist in. Comics and cartoons are an explorational platform for concepts of reality and identity; they are one of very few spaces where I see my identities explored with so much depth and care.
Cartoons and comics exist in between realistic depictions and abstraction. This makes them a great place to express all …

Minecraft As A Teaching Tool: Online Experiential Learning For The Law School Classroom, Maria Jose Schmidt-Kessen, Stina Teilmann-Lock, Florence Villesèche, Andrea Wallace
Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
The Article explores the potential use of Minecraft for experiential learning in higher education. In theory and in practice, intellectual property (IP) questions increasingly arise around if or how digital art can be owned, shared, and reused, as well as how digital realities interact with the various legal regimes. In its sandbox environment, Minecraft allows players to explore these questions through collective co-creation and creative decision-making pertaining to the subsequent re-use of their digital creations. Players become better equipped to reflect on the process of copying, creating, and exploiting their digital creations using the legal tools offered by IP law, …

On The Legality Of Defrauding The Public, Wes Henricksen
On The Legality Of Defrauding The Public, Wes Henricksen
Marquette Law Review
Speech used to intentionally mislead others to gain a tangible benefit while causing harm to the one deceived or to others is generally labeled “fraud.” This term is used in both legal and nonlegal contexts. Where speech used to defraud satisfies the elements of a tort or a crime, it becomes “actionable fraud.” Categories of actionable fraud include common law deceit, securities fraud, and wire fraud. But taken together, these laws address harmful dishonesty in an inconsistent manner. While they broadly prohibit deceiving individual victims, they often allow deceiving the public at large. As a result, it is often lawful …

Amazon is the world’s largest platform for consumer retail sales. It plays a crucial role in matching buyers and sellers and consummating their transactions. It has, for the most part, escaped tort liability for harm caused by defective products sold by third-party vendors on its website. The majority of cases have held Amazon immune from suit because Amazon did not take title to the goods. It was not formally a seller despite the fact that it controls every aspect of the sale from receiving the order, (often) warehousing and shipping the goods, and collecting payment. This formal approach creates a …
