Digitalization Of Toxicology: Improving Preclinical To Clinical Translation., Brian R Berridge, Szczepan W Baran, Vivek Kumar, Natalie Bratcher-Petersen, Michael Ellis, Chang-Ning Liu, Timothy L Robertson

Faculty Research 2024

Though the portfolio of medicines that are extending and improving the lives of patients continues to grow, drug discovery and development remains a challenging business on its best day. Safety liabilities are a significant contributor to development attrition where the costliest liabilities to both drug developers and patients emerge in late development or post-marketing. Animal studies are an important and influential contributor to the current drug discovery and development paradigm intending to provide evidence that a novel drug candidate can be used safely and effectively in human volunteers and patients. However, translational gaps-such as toxicity in patients not predicted by …

Phosphorus-Independent Role Of Fgf23 In Erythropoiesis And Iron Homeostasis., Min Young Park, Rafiou Agoro, Stanislovas S Jankauskas, Carole Le Henaff, Despina Sitara

Faculty Research 2024

A number of studies have reported an association between phosphorus, red blood cell (RBC) production, and iron metabolism. However, it is difficult to distinguish whether the effect of phosphorus is direct or through the actions of FGF23, and it is not clear whether phosphorus is positively or negatively associated with RBC production. In the present study, we investigated the effects of a) increased phosphorus load and b) phosphorus deficiency on erythropoiesis and iron metabolism in association with FGF23. Mice were fed either a 1.2% or 1.65% phosphorus diet and compared to mice fed a control diet containing 0.6% of phosphorus. …

Attention-Language Interface In Multilingual Assessment Instrument For Narratives (Main), Irina A. Sekerina, Olga Parshina, Vladislava Staroverova, Natalia Gagarina

Publications and Research

The current study employed the Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives (MAIN) to test comprehension of narrative macrostructure in Russian in a visual world eye-tracking paradigm. The four MAIN visual narratives are structurally similar and question referents’ goals and internal states (IS). Previous research revealed that children’s MAIN comprehension differed among the four narratives in German, Swedish, Russian, and Turkish, but it is not clear why. We tested whether the difference in comprehension was (a) present, (b) caused by complicated inferences in understanding IS compared with goals, and (c) ameliorated by orienting visual attention to the referents whose IS was critical …

Taste And Learning In The Gustatory Cortex, Martin Raymond Jan 2024

Taste And Learning In The Gustatory Cortex, Martin Raymond

Alternative Theses and Dissertations (AETDs)

This research investigates the organization of taste representations in the gustatory cortex (GC) through two experiments utilizing miniscope imaging in mice. The first experiment focuses on conditioned taste aversion (CTA) and reveals that taste representations in GC are heavily dominated by palatability, with shifts in representational space occurring as a function of learning and extinction. The second experiment explores the interrelation of aversive stimuli, the impact of novelty on taste representations, and the role of somatosensory feedback. Findings suggest that familiarity and palatability emerge as positive signals with experience, shaping taste representations in GC. The study contributes to a nuanced …

Exploring The Contribution Of Visually-Impaired Musicians To The Evolution Of The Spanish Guitar., Marco Ramelli

Conference papers

This article delves into the significant contributions of blind musicians to the evolution of the Spanish guitar. It begins by examining the presence of blind musicians before the 1800s, highlighting their connection to plucked instruments, the monopoly of street music maintained by the Brotherhood of the Blind, and their influence on traditional music and poetry. The discussion then explores the political motivations behind the dissolution of the brotherhood. The article continues by analyzing the 19th-century contributions of blind musicians, including the establishment of schools for the blind, the introduction of Braille, and the development of pedagogical methods for teaching the …

The Effect Of Soluble Soybean Polysaccharide Addition To Permeate Concentrate On Lactose Crystallisation, Growth And Recovery During Lactose Manufacturing, Venkateswarlu Sunkesula, Prafulla Salunke, Lloyd E. Metzger

Dairy Science and Food Science Faculty Publications: 2022 to Present

Lactose is manufactured from permeates of cheese whey, milk protein concentrate and a mix of both using a crystallisation process. Several factors, such as solute supersaturation, cooling rate and impurities, influence lactose crystallisation. This study focussed on the effect of soluble soybean polysaccharides (SSPS) on crystallisation during lactose manufacture from concentrated permeate solutions by evaluating lactose crystal growth and recovery with and without SSPS addition. Adding 0.1% (w/w) SSPS resulted in a significant difference (P > 0.05) in lactose crystal size and yield. The results suggest that using SSPS during lactose manufacturing from permeate concentrates could influence lactose crystallisation and recovery

Damage assessments provide evidence for initiating and evaluating management programs that protect natural resources and human livelihoods against invasive species. Wild pigs (Sus scrofa) cause extensive damage in their native and non-native ranges, but the extent of current damage and efficacy of management of the damage (i.e., population control of wild pigs, exclusion fencing, etc.) remains poorly described. We conducted a systematic review of physical damage caused by wild pigs to summarize what is known and identify knowledge gaps for damage assessment. Wild pig damage assessments have been overwhelmingly qualitative (84% of studies) and measured differently across studies, …

Introduction

Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease of mammals caused by bacterial species of the Brucella genus. The reservoir for disease is typically mammals, with species of Brucella found infecting amphibians, bats, and marine mammals. Brucella spp. can pass directly to humans through contact with infected animals or their products. Brucella spp. can cause chronic debilitating infections in mammals, including humans, and is associated with spontaneous abortions in infected animals, causing reduced fecundity. In Hawai‘i, terrestrial species that could harbor Brucella spp. include swine, cattle, horses, and axis deer among others. The numerous feral swine in Hawai‘i are known to carry …

Impossibility Of Artificial Inventors, Matt Blaszczyk Jan 2024

Impossibility Of Artificial Inventors, Matt Blaszczyk

Fellow, Adjunct, Lecturer, and Research Scholar Works

Recently, the United Kingdom Supreme Court decided that only natural persons can be considered inventors. A year before, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit issued a similar decision. In fact, so have many the courts all over the world. This Article analyses these decisions, argues that the courts got it right, and finds that artificial inventorship is at odds with patent law doctrine, theory, and philosophy. The Article challenges the intellectual property (IP) post-humanists, exposing the analytical and normative perils of their argumentation, and recommends against getting rid of the nominally central place of humans in …

Rethinking Crime And Punishment: Women Who Kill Their Abusers In South Africa, Rebecca Gore Jan 2024

Rethinking Crime And Punishment: Women Who Kill Their Abusers In South Africa, Rebecca Gore

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

The battered women’s movement in the United States was galvanized in the 1970s and ushered in a paradigm shift in how we understand domestic violence. For women who kill their abusers, the movement attempted to incorporate their lived experiences of domestic violence into legal doctrine. Decades later, the battered women’s movement has generated criticisms such as stereotyping women, failing to take an intersectional lens, and over-reliance on the carceral system. These lessons from feminists in the United States present cautionary tales for other contexts, especially for unequal societies impacted by domestic violence, crime, and mass incarceration. Prompted by personal experiences …

The Effect Of Repetitive Sub-Concussive Head Impacts In A Rodent Model And Its Implication In Contact Sports, Jay Venkatraman

Wayne State University Dissertations

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is the damage caused to the brain by an external force causing rapid acceleration and deceleration of the brain, and a sub-concussive impact is defined as a bump, blow or jolt to the head not resulting in any apparent symptoms. Within the United States, around 1.7 million people suffer from TBI, of which sports-related injuries are the cause for one-third of the head injuries. It is estimated that approximately 20% of professional boxers experience at least one incidence of concussion or knockout in their careers and 40% of retired boxers suffer from lasting effects ranging from …

The Effects Of Early Developmental Co-Exposure To Alcohol And Nicotine Via E-Cigarettes On Anxiety- And Motor-Related Behaviors In Mice, Carley Cirafesi Jan 2024

The Effects Of Early Developmental Co-Exposure To Alcohol And Nicotine Via E-Cigarettes On Anxiety- And Motor-Related Behaviors In Mice, Carley Cirafesi

West Chester University Master’s Theses

Thirty percent of people who report consumption of alcohol while pregnant simultaneously report consuming nicotine. Prenatal co-exposure to alcohol and nicotine has increased with the popularity of electronic cigarettes due to their presumed safety, yet e-cigarette use may have a greater impact on fetal development than traditional cigarettes. Prenatal exposure to alcohol or nicotine is associated with increased anxiety-related behaviors and impaired motor coordination later in life, yet it is unknown whether prenatal co-exposure to alcohol and nicotine exacerbates these effects, particularly via e-cigarettes. This project examined the effects of co-exposure to alcohol and nicotine via e-cigarettes during early development …
