Scholarship on police misconduct has almost exclusively focused on urban police working within large cities. This study utilizes media-based data to describe 2,592 arrests for crimes committed by rural and small-town police officers working in non-metropolitan counties across the United States. We compared these cases of police crime to those committed by officers working within more urbanized metropolitan counties. Findings demonstrate: 1) the dispersion of cases of police crime across a continuum of geographic places and types of police agencies including the most rural counties, and 2) significant differences between metropolitan and non-metropolitan cases of police crime including both type …

Improving Document Classification By Integrating Human-Crafted Semantic Knowledge, Lubomir Stanchev, Zachary Weinfeld
Improving Document Classification By Integrating Human-Crafted Semantic Knowledge, Lubomir Stanchev, Zachary Weinfeld
Computer Science and Software Engineering
Document classification is a pivotal task in various domains, warranting the development of robust algorithms. Among these, the Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) algorithm, introduced by Google, has proven to perform well when fine-tuned for the task at hand. Leveraging transformer architecture, BERT demonstrates stellar language understanding capabilities. However, the integration of BERT with a range of approaches has shown potential for further enhancing classification accuracy. This paper investigates three techniques that leverage semantic understanding to improve the performance of document classification models trained with BERT. First, we balance corpora afflicted by imbalanced training data distributions. Next, we substitute …

Furry Friends & Brighter Futures: Enhancing The Life Skills Of Toddlers With Autism Through Animal Assisted Therapy, Abigail Rosales Tolentino
Nursing | Senior Theses
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) encompasses a broad spectrum of challenges that impact social interaction, communication, and behavior. While Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) stands as a common therapeutic approach, there is a growing recognition of the need for personalized interventions. Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) emerges as a promising avenue for enhancing social interactions. This study focuses on the utilization of dogs in AAT for toddlers aged 12 to 36 months with confirmed ASD diagnoses. The experimental group will undergo a combined intervention involving standard ABA therapy alongside weekly AAT sessions, whereas the control group will receive standard ABA therapy alone. Pre- …

Religious Influences Upon Blood Transfusion Therapy: Best Practices For Nursing Care During Ethical Dilemmas Regarding Treatment Refusal Among Jehovah’S Witnesses, Abigail Aranda, Leonard Tabas
Nursing | Senior Theses
Blood transfusion therapy is a vital medical intervention that can be life-saving in numerous clinical scenarios. However, the ethical dilemmas that surround this procedure become evident when religious beliefs begin to interfere with healthcare decisions, specifically those of Jehovah’s Witnesses. This proposal discusses the best practices for nursing care during these dilemmas involving blood transfusion therapy with a direct focus on the Jehovah’s Witness community and pediatric patients whose parents affiliate with these beliefs. These practices incorporate a comprehensive approach to patient care, which employs collaborative decision-making between patients, their families, and healthcare professionals as well as open communication and …

Artificial Authors (2024-2025), Shreya Dhital
Argument
In this piece Shreya Dhital frames her discussion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with emphasis on the definition of the word artificial. In giving this definition, she argues for the need to keep in mind that while AI might be intelligent it is also contrived, human-derived, and lacking in spontaneity. She further develops this argument through the use of fiction, including a short story, “The Shawl,” to show how human-written work draws on a depth of real-life experiences, unexpected human emotions, and ultimately is what gives AI its training in “learning” how to write. She implores the reader not to “waste …

An Exploration Of Teacher-Student Writing Conferences In A Fourth-Grade Classroom, Tracy Beling
Dissertations of Practice
Through the theoretical lens of Vygotsky’s social development theory, this qualitative research study sought to provide insight into the suggestions a fourth-grade teacher provided during teacher-student writing conferences, the changes students made to their writing, and how students internalized the information learned during the conferences. Over the course of five assignments, three students participated in teacher-student writing conferences that were recorded for later review. The teacher received no training in writing conferences but used his own professional development to learn how to implement the writing conferences. Student writing samples were collected and analyzed both with-in and cross cases. Data collected …
