A Comparative Analysis Of The Origin And Formation Between Chinese Characters And English Alphabets, Xuan Song
A Comparative Analysis Of The Origin And Formation Between Chinese Characters And English Alphabets, Xuan Song
Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology
This research is based on the framework of social constructivism, utilizing the principle of Human Universals as a methodology to compare the similarities and differences between the ideation and formation methods of Chinese characters and English alphabets. Through comparative analysis of the ideation of English letters (pictogramme) and the origin of Chinese characters, known as the "Six Categories Theory," we discover their alignment in terms of social, traditional, and cultural aspects. This suggests that different ethnic groups share common features in terms of life experience, learning cognitive development, and thinking habits. This study also finds that the origins of English …

A Rare Presentation Of Erysipelothrix Rhusiopathiae Endocarditis With Acute Heart Failure, Maryam Barkhordarian, Mark Grijalva, James Liu, Muhammad Yasir, Abraham Lo
Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives
Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is an occupation-related infection that can be found in farm animals or marine life. This infection can present with a spectrum of infection ranging from local cellulitis to aortic endocarditis. Developing endocarditis is rare from this organism with only a few case reports in the literature. We presented a case of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae bacteremia that led to aortic valve endocarditis with a Gerbode defect within the mitral valve complicated with an acute exacerbation of congestive heart failure, necessitating emergent valve replacement surgery, with eventual permanent pacemaker due to complete heart block. We intend to highlight some unusual characteristics …

Pulmonary Clostridium Perfringens: Seeding Beyond The Gastrointestinal Tract, Thilini Delungahawatta, Shiavax J. Rao, Marcos Wolff, Christopher J Haas
Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives
Clostridia perfringens infection outside the gastrointestinal system is rare. Here, we report on a 75-year-old man with history of end-stage renal disease presenting after a syncopal event with lactic acidosis, leukocytosis, and mild hyperbilirubinemia. Chest imaging revealed a loculated, left-sided pleural effusion; diagnostic thoracentesis identified Clostridia perfringens, consistent with an empyema. Video-assisted thoracic left lung decortication was performed; tissue culture also speciated Clostridia perfringens. Further imaging revealed concomitant acute cholecystitis, suggesting hematogenous seeding or transdiaphragmatic extension of Clostridia perfringens to pleural space from an abdominal source. The patient was successfully managed with laparoscopic cholecystectomy and discharged on a one-month course …

Emerging evidence indicates that antibiotic-induced dysbiosis can play an etiological role in the pathogenesis of neuropsychiatric disorders. However, most of this evidence comes from rodent models. The objective of this study was to evaluate if antibiotic-induced gut dysbiosis can elicit changes in gut metabolites and behavior indicative of gut-brain axis disruption in common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) – a nonhuman primate model often used to study sociability and stress. We were able to successfully induce dysbiosis in marmosets using a custom antibiotic cocktail (vancomycin, enrofloxacin and neomycin) administered orally for 28 days. This gut dysbiosis altered gut metabolite profiles, …
Cancer Treatment By Targeting Hdac4 Translocation Induced By Microsecond Pulsed Electric Field Exposure: Mechanistic Insights Through Kinases And Phosphatases, Zahra Safaei
Theses and Dissertations
Epigenetic modifications, arising from sub-cellular shifts in histone deacetylase (HDAC) activity and localization, present promising strategies for diverse cancer treatments. HDACs, enzymes responsible for post-translational histone modifications, induce these epigenetic changes by removing acetyl groups from ε-N-acetyl-lysine residues on histones, thereby suppressing gene transcription. Within the HDAC group, class IIa HDACs are notable for their responsiveness to extracellular signals, bridging the gap between external stimuli, plasma membrane, and genome through nuclear-cytoplasmic translocation. This localization offers two significant mechanisms for cancer treatment: nuclear accumulation of HDACs represses oncogenic transcription factors, such as myocyte-specific enhancer factor 2C (MEF2C), triggering various cell death …

The Macrophage Autophagy-Lysosome System In Atherosclerosis Pathogenesis, Astrid Carolina Rodriguez Velez
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Cardiovascular diseases, particularly atherosclerosis, pose significant health concerns, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of underlying mechanisms for effective therapeutic interventions. In this dissertation, I studied diverse topics, ranging from dietary impacts to intracellular processes, shedding light on novel avenues for atherosclerosis research. It is divided in 4 core projects. In Chapter 2) I studied how dietary protein drives atherosclerosis and lesion complexity. We found that protein ingestion acutely elevates amino acid levels in blood and atherosclerotic plaques, stimulating macrophage mTOR signaling. This is causal in plaque progression as the effects are abrogated in macrophage-specific Raptor-null mice. Mechanistically, we find amino acids …

Development Of A Xenograft For Annular Repair Using Pulsed Electric Field Exposures For Enhanced Decellularization, Prince Mensah Kwaku Atsu
Theses and Dissertations
Severe back injuries and chronic pain necessitate surgical replacement of damaged intervertebral disc (IVD) cartilage in advanced disease stages. Bovine IVD tissue has been exposed to an upper threshold pulsed electric field (PEF) dose, causing cell death without thermal damage to the tissue. Subsequent PEF exposures at lower magnitudes have accelerated the removal of immunogenic biomolecules though electrokinetic extraction using optimized aqueous solutions. This approach yields a natural scaffold, ready for biocompatibility and mechanical strength assessment. The effects of microsecond pulsed electric fields (µsPEF) on primary bovine AF fibroblast-like cells have been characterized in vitro. PEFs of 10 and 100 …

Open Access Fund Publications
Recent decades have seen an exponential rise in global obesity prevalence, with rates nearly doubling in a span of 40 years. A comprehensive knowledge base regarding the systemic effects of obesity is required to create new preventative and therapeutic agents effective at combating the current obesity epidemic. Previous studies of diet-induced obesity utilizing mouse models have demonstrated a difference in bodyweight gain by sex. In such studies, female mice gained significantly less weight than male mice when given the same high fat (HF) diet, indicating a resistance to diet-induced obesity. Research has also shown sex differences in gut microbiome composition …

Effectively Affective: Examining The Ethos Of One Hbcu Writing Center, Karen Keaton Jackson, Amara Hand
The Writing Center Journal
Over the past several decades, writing center scholarship has evolved to include multiple theories and pedagogies that led to widely used best practices. As is the case in many disciplines, often writing centers at large, research PWIs are most often cited and highlighted within the scholarship. While many of those readings do offer helpful strategies for working with students at all levels, often they do not account for the unique contexts and diverse student populations that make up many HBCUs. As a result, more research from a variety of writing centers is needed so practitioners see there are multiple ways …
