Iequity: An Augmented Reality Theatre Production, Amy Pan, Kristina Arnold Dr, Alan White, Truth Tran

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Augmented reality is commonly seen being used in game development and design, typically seen through a mobile device such as a phone. However, it has rarely been tested and pushed to its limits in other settings. The main focus of this project was trying to deploy augmented reality in settings that are seen as more traditional. This will be done by taking a play, pre-written and performed by a professor at Western Kentucky University, and building an augmented reality set for the play in the background. The main software that will be used is Unity and Blender. Unity will be …

Attitudes Of South-Central Kentucky Residents Towards Coyotes And Their Management, Andrew T. Mcqueen, Stephen Sumithran Phd

Posters-at-the-Capitol

The existence of the coyote in the eastern U.S. is a recent development and the public’s perception of coyotes has been widely studied in urban areas. However, perceptions in rural areas, especially rural Appalachia, have been largely unstudied. It is necessary for wildlife managers to understand the public’s perceptions of coyotes and coyote management when creating management plans. We conducted a public survey in South-central Kentucky to determine perceptions toward coyotes and coyote management methods. The survey contained questions about demographics (age, gender, county of residence, landownership, etc.), perceptions (fears, opinions), knowledge (true/false questions), and preferred management practices (hunting, trapping, …

Triterpenoid Cddo-Ea Protects From Obesity And Insulin Resistance In An Animal Model Of Type 2 Diabetes, A. Cantu, Denae Cantu, Cordelia Rasa, Shizue Mito, Juan C. Lopez-Alvarenga, Sara M. Reyna Jan 2024

Triterpenoid Cddo-Ea Protects From Obesity And Insulin Resistance In An Animal Model Of Type 2 Diabetes, A. Cantu, Denae Cantu, Cordelia Rasa, Shizue Mito, Juan C. Lopez-Alvarenga, Sara M. Reyna

Research Symposium

Background: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is characterized by insulin resistance, an impaired response to insulin by cells. Although several medications target insulin sensitivity, they fail to prevent progression to T2D in most high-risk individuals. Oleanolic acid (OA) is a pentacyclic triterpenoid found in plants with unique cardioprotective and anti-diabetic properties. OA can serve as a scaffold to produce synthetic molecules, known as synthetic oleanane triterpenoids (SOs), with enhanced biological activity. Our published findings show that the SO CDDO-EA (2-cyano-3,12-dioxooleana-1,9(11)-dien-28-oic acid-ethyl amide) facilitates translocation of the glucose transporter protein, GLUT4, as a new mechanism of CDDO-EA in regulating glucose metabolism. Thus, …

High-Fidelity 3d Hair Modeling Using Computed Tomography

Defensive Publications Series

An automatic framework for creating high-fidelity 3D hair models that are suitable for use in downstream graphics applications. This approach utilizes real-world hair wigs as input, and is able to reconstruct hair strands for a wide range of hair styles. Systems and method leverage computed tomography (Cl) to create density volumes of the hair regions, allowing users to see through the hair unlike image-based approaches which are limited to reconstructing the visible surface. To address the noise and limited resolution of the input density volumes, we employ a coarse-to-fine approach. This process first recovers guide strands with estimated 3D orientation …

Wnt Signaling In Cell Adhesion, Development, And Colon Cancer, Nydia Tejeda-Muñoz, Kuo-Ching Mei Jan 2024

Wnt Signaling In Cell Adhesion, Development, And Colon Cancer, Nydia Tejeda-Muñoz, Kuo-Ching Mei

Pharmacy Faculty Scholarship

Wnt signaling is essential for embryonic development, influencing processes such as axis formation, cell proliferation and differentiation, cell fate decisions, and axon guidance. It also plays a role in maintaining tissue homeostasis in adult organisms. The loss of normal cell polarity and adhesion caused by Wnt signaling activation is a fundamental step for tumor progression and metastasis. Activating the canonical Wnt pathway is a driving force in many human cancers, especially colorectal, hepatocellular, and mammary carcinomas. Wnt causes the stabilization and nuclear transport of newly synthesized transcriptional regulator β-catenin. The generally accepted view is that the canonical effects of Wnt …

Frogs are an ecologically diverse and phylogenetically ancient group of anuran amphibians that include important vertebrate cell and developmental model systems, notably the genus Xenopus. Here we report a high-quality reference genome sequence for the western clawed frog, Xenopus tropicalis, along with draft chromosome-scale sequences of three distantly related emerging model frog species, Eleutherodactylus coqui, Engystomops pustulosus, and Hymenochirus boettgeri. Frog chromosomes have remained remarkably stable since the Mesozoic Era, with limited Robertsonian (i.e., arm-preserving) translocations and end-to-end fusions found among the smaller chromosomes. Conservation of synteny includes conservation of centromere locations, marked by centromeric tandem repeats associated with Cenp-a …

Marcus Institute of Integrative Health Faculty Papers

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a significant public health concern, specially characterized by a complex pattern of abnormal neural activity and functional connectivity. It is often associated with a broad spectrum of short-term and long-term cognitive and behavioral symptoms including memory dysfunction, headache, and balance difficulties. Furthermore, there is evidence that oxidative stress significantly contributes to these symptoms and neurophysiological changes. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) on brain function and chronic symptoms in mTBI patients. Fifty patients diagnosed with chronic mTBI participated in this study. They were categorized into two groups …

Cholinergic Activation Of Corticofugal Circuits In The Adult Mouse Prefrontal Cortex, Allan Gulledge Jan 2024

Cholinergic Activation Of Corticofugal Circuits In The Adult Mouse Prefrontal Cortex, Allan Gulledge

Dartmouth Scholarship

Acetylcholine (ACh) promotes neocortical output to the thalamus and brainstem by preferentially enhancing the postsynaptic excitability of layer 5 pyramidal tract (PT) neurons relative to neighboring intratelencephalic (IT) neurons. Less is known about how ACh regulates the excitatory synaptic drive of IT and PT neurons. To address this question, spontaneous excitatory postsynaptic potentials (sEPSPs) were recorded in dual recordings of IT and PT neurons in slices of prelimbic cortex from adult female and male mice. ACh (20 µM) enhanced sEPSP amplitudes, frequencies, rise-times, and half-widths preferentially in PT neurons. These effects were blocked by the muscarinic receptor antagonist atropine (1 …

Standardized Pre-Clinical Surgical Animal Model Protocol To Investigate The Cellular And Molecular Mechanisms Of Ischemic Flap Healing, Edita Aksamitiene, Ryan Heffelfinger, Jan Hoek, Edmund Pribitkin Jan 2024

Standardized Pre-Clinical Surgical Animal Model Protocol To Investigate The Cellular And Molecular Mechanisms Of Ischemic Flap Healing, Edita Aksamitiene, Ryan Heffelfinger, Jan Hoek, Edmund Pribitkin

Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Some of the most complex surgical interventions to treat trauma and cancer include the use of locoregional pedicled and free autologous tissue transfer flaps. While the techniques used for these reconstructive surgery procedures have improved over time, flap complications and even failure remain a significant clinical challenge. Animal models are useful in studying the pathophysiology of ischemic flaps, but when repeatability is a primary focus of a study, conventional in-vivo designs, where one randomized subset of animals serves as a treatment group while a second subset serves as a control, are at a disadvantage instigated by greater subject-to-subject variability. …

Shared book reading interactions between parents and their children have been studied to draw correlations to a child’s vocabulary growth, language development, mathematical scores, and socioemotional skills. However, there is a lack of research regarding fathers’ and toddlers’ engagement and behaviors during shared book reading interactions. The current study investigated and analyzed father and toddler interactions during shared book reading. The data was collected from a larger longitudinal study. Seven father-child dyads participated in the study (Mage = 35 years; range = 30-43 years). The children included four males and two females, and up to two videos were collected for …

The Impact Of Video Game Play On Attention And Perception, Krish Pradhan Jan 2024

The Impact Of Video Game Play On Attention And Perception, Krish Pradhan

Master's Theses

Past research shows that individuals who play action video games have stronger attentional resources. However, the role of expertise and player experience is yet to be operationalized in cognitive video game research. This thesis aimed to discover if there is a systematic relationship between video game expertise, specifically percentile-based ranks and actual hours played, on perception and attentional skills. Percentile-based rankings were used as a new, objective measure of expertise that accounts for an individual's skill level relative to all other players of the same game. The number of weekly hours played was gathered from the participants and divided into …

Generalization And Discrimination Of Inhibitory Avoidance Differentially Engage Anterior And Posterior Retrosplenial Subregions, Erisa Met Hoxha, Payton K. Robinson, Kaitlyn M. Greer, Sydney Trask

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Introduction: In a variety of behavioral procedures animals will show selective fear responding in shock-associated contexts, but not in other contexts. However, several factors can lead to generalized fear behavior, where responding is no longer constrained to the conditioning context and will transfer to novel contexts.

Methods: Here, we assessed memory generalization using an inhibitory avoidance paradigm to determine if generalized avoidance behavior engages the retrosplenial cortex (RSC). Male and female Long Evans rats received inhibitory avoidance training prior to testing in the same context or a shifted context in two distinct rooms; one room that had fluorescent lighting (Light) …

Molecular Mechanisms In Pathophysiology Of Mucopolysaccharidosis And Prospects For Innovative Therapy, Yasuhiko Ago, Estera Rintz, Krishna Sai Musini, Zhengyu Ma, Shunji Tomatsu

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPSs) are a group of inborn errors of the metabolism caused by a deficiency in the lysosomal enzymes required to break down molecules called glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). These GAGs accumulate over time in various tissues and disrupt multiple biological systems, including catabolism of other substances, autophagy, and mitochondrial function. These pathological changes ultimately increase oxidative stress and activate innate immunity and inflammation. We have described the pathophysiology of MPS and activated inflammation in this paper, starting with accumulating the primary storage materials, GAGs. At the initial stage of GAG accumulation, affected tissues/cells are reversibly affected but progress irreversibly to: (1) …

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

In the paper, neutrosophic statistical analysis of temperature data of different cities in the southeastern Anatolia region of Turkey is given. The neutrosophic mean and neutrosophic coefficient of variation are computed using the temperature data. From the analysis, it is concluded that the temperatures of Mardin and Şanlıurfa cities are more consistent than the other cities in Turkey. In addition, the neutrosophic results are compared with results under classical statistics. Based on the comparative study, it can be concluded that neutrosophic statistical results are more adequate, flexible, and more informative than classical statistics.

Disruption Of The Arabidopsis Acyl-Activating Enzyme 3 Impairs Seed Coat Mucilage Accumulation And Seed Germination, Ninghui Cheng, Paul A Nakata Jan 2024

Disruption Of The Arabidopsis Acyl-Activating Enzyme 3 Impairs Seed Coat Mucilage Accumulation And Seed Germination, Ninghui Cheng, Paul A Nakata

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

The Acyl-activating enzyme (AAE) 3 gene encodes an oxalyl-CoA synthetase that catalyzes the conversion of oxalate to oxalyl-CoA as the first step in the CoA-dependent pathway of oxalate catabolism. Although the role of this enzyme in oxalate catabolism has been established, its biological roles in plant growth and development are less understood. As a step toward gaining a better understanding of these biological roles, we report here a characterization of the Arabidopsis thaliana aae3 (Ataae3) seed mucilage phenotype. Ruthidium red (RR) staining of Ataae3 and wild type (WT) seeds suggested that the observed reduction in Ataae3 …

The DNA damage response is critical for maintaining genome integrity and is commonly disrupted in the development of cancer. PPM1D (protein phosphatase, Mg2+/Mn2+ dependent 1D) is a master negative regulator of the response; gain-of-function mutations and amplifications of PPM1D are found across several human cancers making it a relevant pharmacologic target. Here, we used CRISPR/Cas9 screening to identify synthetic-lethal dependencies of PPM1D, uncovering superoxide dismutase-1 (SOD1) as a potential target for PPM1D-mutant cells. We revealed a dysregulated redox landscape characterized by elevated levels of reactive oxygen species and a compromised response to oxidative stress in PPM1D-mutant cells. Altogether, our …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis virus (VEEV) may enter the central nervous system (CNS) within olfactory sensory neurons (OSN) that originate in the nasal cavity after intranasal exposure. While it is known that VEEV has evolved several mechanisms to inhibit type I interferon (IFN) signaling within infected cells, whether this inhibits virologic control during neuroinvasion along OSN has not been studied.

METHODS: We utilized an established murine model of intranasal infection with VEEV and a repository of scRNAseq data from IFN-treated OSN to assess the cellular targets and IFN signaling responses after VEEV exposure.

RESULTS: We found that immature OSN, which …
