Effects Of Demineralization Protocols On Hydrogen And Oxygen Isotope Ratios In Fossil Bone Collagen, Linda M. Reynard Nov 2026

Effects Of Demineralization Protocols On Hydrogen And Oxygen Isotope Ratios In Fossil Bone Collagen, Linda M. Reynard

Boise State University Publications and Presentations

The effect of three commonly used preparation protocols on bone collagen δ2H and δ18O values was investigated, using six generally well-preserved faunal bones (cattle, bison, horse) ranging in age from the Holocene to Late Pleistocene. The treatments tested were ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid demineralization without gelatinization and hydrochloric acid demineralization with and without gelatinization. There are significant shifts in δ18O values among preparation methods. No systematic shifts in bone collagen δ2H values were noted among the three treatments, and most offsets were low (< 2–3 ‰) and smaller than typical measurement uncertainties. A few sample/treatment combinations yielded slightly higher inter-treatment δ2H differences (∼ 5–7 ‰). Lower mass fraction of hydrogen in …

Conventional And Emerging Pre-Treatments For Plant Protein Fermentation: Prospects For Next-Generation Plant-Based Meat Analogues, Vishal Sharma, Ruth M. Hamill, Eduarda M. Cabral, Catherine M. Burgess, Catherine Barry-Ryan Oct 2026

Conventional And Emerging Pre-Treatments For Plant Protein Fermentation: Prospects For Next-Generation Plant-Based Meat Analogues, Vishal Sharma, Ruth M. Hamill, Eduarda M. Cabral, Catherine M. Burgess, Catherine Barry-Ryan

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

The development of plant-based meat analogues (PBMAs) that accurately replicate meat texture and flavor remains limited by fundamental structural differences between plant and animal proteins. Most notably, the globular conformation of plant proteins contrasts with the fibrous anisotropy of animal muscle, thereby limiting viscoelasticity. Additional challenges include beany off-notes arising from lipid oxidation products such as hexanal and anti-nutritional factors (ANFs) that reduce bioavailability. Fermentation is a traditional technology increasingly explored as a strategy to address these limitations by modifying protein structure and functional properties, and by promoting the formation of savory volatile compounds. However, conventional processing and extraction of …

Fall 2026 Environmental Sciences Seminar Series, Wenjing Xu, Wenjing Xu Oct 2026

Fall 2026 Environmental Sciences Seminar Series, Wenjing Xu, Wenjing Xu

NRESS Seminars

Animal movement is fundamental to biodiversity, offering early signals of species' responses to environmental change. I first discuss how wildlife movement is shaped by landscape composition and configuration, from global to local scales. I then focus on one linear infrastructure reconfiguring landscapes worldwide: fences. Drawing on research from the western US and beyond, I show how fences reshape animal movement, with cascading consequences for ecosystems and societies. I close with reflections on broadening this science through visual storytelling.

Cholesterol Metabolism And Oral Health: An Integrative Review, Raíssa Colherinhas, Carla Guimarães Moutinho, Ana Cristina F Vinha, Carla Alexandra Lopes Andrade De Sousa E Silva

International Arab Journal of Dentistry

Background: This integrative review associated changes in cholesterol metabolism and oral diseases. Conditions such as periodontal disease, tooth loss and oral cancer may be influenced by imbalances in lipid levels through mechanisms involving inflammation, oxidative stress, and immune modulation.

Highlight: This review examined scientific studies published mainly in the last decade. The findings indicate consistent associations between hypercholesterolemia or hyperlipidemia and periodontal disease, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cardiovascular conditions, peri-implant health, and tooth loss. Hypocholesterolemia was associated with oral squamous cell carcinoma. Periodontal disease was the most frequently investigated oral condition, representing almost half of the included studies.

Stem Cell-Based Therapies In Periodontology And Implant Dentistry: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Abdullah Saeed, Marycris Padrigo Oct 2026

Stem Cell-Based Therapies In Periodontology And Implant Dentistry: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Abdullah Saeed, Marycris Padrigo

International Arab Journal of Dentistry

Introduction: Periodontal disease and peri-implantitis remain the leading causes of tooth and implant loss, and conventional regenerative procedures consistently fall short of full structural restoration. Stem cell therapies have emerged as a promising alternative, operating through multi-lineage differentiation, immunomodulation via paracrine signaling, and extracellular vesicle communication. Prior systematic reviews, however, lacked methodological rigor — omitting clustering adjustments, REML/HKSJ estimation, prediction intervals, and publication bias modeling.

Aim: This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated whether stem cell therapy produces superior clinical and radiographic outcomes compared to cell-free controls in adults with periodontal or peri-implant bone defects.

Methods: Searches across …

Activity-Dependent Astrocytic Cholesterol Release Fine-Tunes Modes Of Synaptic Exo- And Endocytosis, Jongyun Myeong, Vitaly A Klyachko Oct 2026

Activity-Dependent Astrocytic Cholesterol Release Fine-Tunes Modes Of Synaptic Exo- And Endocytosis, Jongyun Myeong, Vitaly A Klyachko

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Cholesterol is essential for the organization of neurotransmitter release machinery, yet how it regulates the balance among different forms of synaptic exo- and endocytosis remains poorly understood. Moreover, which pre-synaptic processes rely on neuronal vs. astrocyte-derived cholesterol is unknown. Using nanoscale-precision imaging of single-vesicle release in hippocampal synapses, we demonstrate that astrocytic cholesterol is a critical determinant of both temporal and spatial aspects of presynaptic dynamics by differentially modulating the two main forms of synchronous release, univesicular (UVR) and multivesicular (MVR), effectively fine-tuning their balance. Moreover, astrocytic cholesterol determines the spatial distribution of vesicle release across the active zone and …

Reconsidering Nebuchadnezzar’S Seven-Year Madness: The Lycanthropy Theory And Its Historical Potential In Daniel 4, Fabián Ubilla Oct 2026

Reconsidering Nebuchadnezzar’S Seven-Year Madness: The Lycanthropy Theory And Its Historical Potential In Daniel 4, Fabián Ubilla

Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)

The account in Daniel 4, in which it is said that King Nebuchadnezzar lost his mind and lived as a beast for seven years, lacks corroboration in cuneiform documents. There are consequently several theories that attempt to explain the meaning of this story. One of them is the theory of lycanthropy, which suggests that the mental ailment of the king was due to a strange disease. This theory has largely been abandoned because other theories are better supported by ancient documents. However, the present study proposes a reconsideration of the lycanthropy theory for two main reasons. The first is that, …

A Combination Of Hyoscyamine And Theophylline For Treatment Of Sick Sinus Syndrome In A Dog, Uraiwan Saengkieo, Arisara Kiatsilapanan, Suwanakiet Sawangkoon

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

A-12-year-old female West Highland White Terrier presented with a history of cardiac syncope. Physical examination revealed bradycardia. Sick sinus syndrome (SSS) was diagnosed with electrocardiography and 24-hour Holter monitoring. However, the owner made the decision to receive the pharmacological therapy. Therefore, a combination of hyoscyamine sulfate and theophylline was prescribed. Following two adjustments of drug dosage and frequency within a year, the total number of heartbeats increased from 58,091 to 73,686 beats, and the mean heart rate increased from 44 to 59 bpm. After the treatment, the dog became stable and no syncopal episodes were detected, despite the presence of …

Could 'Real Existing Ai' Be Sentient?, Tim Crane Oct 2026

Could 'Real Existing Ai' Be Sentient?, Tim Crane

Animal Sentience

Jonathan Birch is rightly sceptical about the idea that today’s AI machines (e.g. LLMs) are candidates for sentience. Nonetheless, he gives three reasons for taking the future possibility of AI sentience seriously. I dispute them all. Birch fails to distinguish the very idea of an artificial mind from computational AI (what I call ‘Real Existing AI’); he does not adequately distinguish a simulation from a replica or copy; and he fails to acknowledge that the appeal to computational functionalism in this context is straightforwardly question-begging.

Artificial Sentience: From Computational Functionalism To Behaviourism?, Wanja Wiese Oct 2026

Artificial Sentience: From Computational Functionalism To Behaviourism?, Wanja Wiese

Animal Sentience

I critically examine Jonathan Birch’s account of how brain emulations might create artificial sentience candidates, arguing that his account risks collapsing into a behaviourist account, unless the specific computational processes realised by such emulations are carefully considered. Drawing on examples from computational neuroscience, I show that similar behaviours can arise from vastly different computational processes, thereby undermining the suggestion to focus on behaviourial profiles to determine whether a brain emulation of a sentience candidate is itself a sentience candidate.

Strategies To Transform Natural Resource Extension With Inaturalist And Engage The Public In Biodiversity Conservation, Corey T Callaghan, Brittany M Mason Oct 2026

Strategies To Transform Natural Resource Extension With Inaturalist And Engage The Public In Biodiversity Conservation, Corey T Callaghan, Brittany M Mason

Journal of Extension

Participatory citizen science is an increasingly popular tool that provides nonformal education and learning activities. iNaturalist, a free, open-access, participatory citizen science platform, provides a place to engage the public in natural resource programming. Here, we explore practical applications for integrating iNaturalist into Extension programming. We highlight two approaches: (a) self-guided programming, where participants independently engage in biodiversity documentation and professionals contribute identifications, and (b) facilitated programming, which involves structured events and projects led by Extension professionals. We discuss the unique advantages of using iNaturalist in these contexts and offer recommendations for quantitatively measuring and reporting its impact in Extension …
