Vaux’S Swifts In Portland – 15 Years Of Monitoring An Iconic Bird, Candace Larson, Joe Liebezeit, Mary Coolidge
Urban Ecosystem Research Consortium of Portland/Vancouver
For 15 year, Portland Audubon has counted migrating Vaux’s Swifts at Chapman Elementary School and other sites in the Portland region as part of a community science effort to monitor fall chimney roost site use, safeguard key roosting sites from disturbances, and educate the public on the protection of this species of concern. Data are contributed annually to a larger West Coast wide tracking effort. Vaux’s Swift population numbers have been declining for several decades, likely due primarily to habitat loss. This species historically utilized large hollowed out old-growth tree snags to roost. Now, many depend on large chimneys as …

"The Land We Live In Is Our Own": Indigenous Conceptions Of Space In Eighteenth-Century Florida, James Hill
Florida Historical Quarterly
In 1792, Okillissa Chupka, the mekko or headman of the town of Coweta Hitchiti, sent a message to Spanish King Carlos IV. Decyring Spanish officials' recent intereference in Coweta diplomacy, he asserted that "the Land we live in is our own & we are determined to have whom we wish in it." Statements like Okillissa Chupka's are not rare or uncommon in the documentary record. Indigenous leaders maintained the right to control who entered, left, or resided in their territory. All too frequently, scholars of Florida history have ignored the sovereign claims of Indigenous polities. However, Okillissa Chupka was one …

Remembering An Indigenous South: Regional Identity, Vero Beach, And Settler Tourism, Kristalyn Marie Shefveland
Florida Historical Quarterly
In the early twentieth century, city boosters in Vero Beach concocted a mythical tale of its founding that reimagined the region as devoid of Indigenous inhabitants, recently inhabited, dripping with colonial Spanish lore, and otherwise thoroughly transformed by the arrival of white European settlers. Town planners, promoters, and historical societies collectively sold the community with simple stories that obfuscate Vero's, and Florida's, more complex and inclusive history. Despite the presence of Seminoles in the region and extensive physical evidence for the region's long history of Indigenous occupation, the Indian River Farms Company and city boosters Herman J. Zeuch, Waldo Sexton, …

An Apalachee Revolt?: Reconceptualizing Violence In Seventeenth-Century Apalachee, Aubrey Lauersdorf
Florida Historical Quarterly
In 1647, a group of Apalachee diplomats arrived at an Apalachee town somewhere between the Ochlockonee and Aucilla rivers in the present--day Florida panhandle. The diplomats, representing communities across Apalachee territory, settled in the town's council house where their hosts welcomed, fed, and lodged them. Soon the Apalachees were joined by Chisca delegates, representatives of a people who had relocated near Apalachee territory from present-day Tennessee. Bands of Chiscas had recently entered Apalachee territory to raid Apalachee towns. Now they met for peace negotiations. The Apalachee delegates present at this meeting saw promise in a friendship with their erstwhile enemies.

'We Have Always Been Cow People": Alachua Seminole Identity And Autononiy, 1750-1776, Jason Herbert
Florida Historical Quarterly
In the spring of 1774, Abaya welcomed British merchants to his Cuscowilla home with a lavish feast. His guests were a usual sight on the Alachua Plains of north central Florida, and their presence signaled the importance of a healthy international commerce to both Indian and European communities alike. What a celebration it was. Traditional Indigenous dishes dominated the menu: corn cakes, milk and hominy, venison stew, and a drink of honey mixed with water. William Bartram, a naturalist who joined the trading party with hopes of cataloging the region's ecosystem, apparently enjoyed each of the courses. Although he expressed …

Emerald Ash Borer: Our Community's First Response, Victor Vasquez-Ibarra, Maura Olivos, Janet Silva- Villanueva, Mariana Valenzuela
Urban Ecosystem Research Consortium of Portland/Vancouver
When natural resource (NR) threats like Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) come to regions it is not uncommon for events to pass through underserved and vulnerable communities unbeknownst. For many communities, the lack of awareness is due to barriers like language access, non-prioritization of information sharing, or other life priorities. Before long, the impacts are realized with little understanding as to why or how, bringing greater disparity. Proactively working first with underserved and vulnerable communities helps dismantle barriers that delay awareness of threats like EAB and will empower people to prepare, respond, and build resiliency for future NR issues. One such …

Setting The Record Straight: Why The Nba Needs To Officially Adopt Aba Statistics, Roy E. Brownell Ii
Arkansas Law Review
In the case of the legal settlement between the (merger of the NBA and ABA, one of those legacies is that the NBA chooses not to officially recognize the ABA’s statistics. By arguing in favor of the NBA officially adopting ABA statistics, this Article addresses a question that lies at the intersection of law, race, sports, history, and corporate policy. Part II discusses the 1976 legal settlement between the two leagues. Part III, in turn, analyzes concerns over morality and why they weigh heavily in support of the NBA acknowledging ABA records. Part IV offers an evaluation of historical factors …

Close Contacts Of Xenograft Recipients: Ethical Considerations Due To Risk Of Xenozoonosis, Daniel J Hurst, Luz Padilla, Daniel Rodger, Tamar Schiff, David K C Cooper
Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research
With decades of pre-clinical studies culminating in the recent clinical application of xenotransplantation, it would appear timely to provide recommendations for operationalizing oversight of xenotransplantation clinical trials. Ethical issues with clinical xenotransplantation have been described for decades, largely centering on animal welfare, the risks posed to the recipient, and public health risks posed by potential spread of xenozoonosis. Much less attention has been given to considerations relating to potentially elevated risks faced by those who may care for or otherwise have close contact with xenograft recipients. This paper examines the ethical and logistical issues raised by the potential exposure to …

Reclaiming The Symbol: Ethics, Rhetoric, And The Humanistic Integration Of Gai - A Burkean Perspective, Daniel Plate, James Hutson
Faculty Scholarship
This study delves into the intersection of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) and the Humanities, guided by the critical insights of Kenneth Burke, a seminal figure in the study of rhetoric and a vocal critic of scientism and positivism. The skepticism of the American literary theorist towards an uncritical embrace of science and technology, and his concerns over the inclination of the Humanities to adopt scientific methodologies at the expense of traditional forms of inquiry, provide a critical framework for examining the new role played by GAI within the Humanities. By framing these tools in the context of Burkean rhetorical theory, …

Do Focused Interests Support Word Learning? A Study With Autistic And Nonautistic Children, Sudha Arunachalam, Amelia Steele, Taisha Pelletier, Rhiannon Luyster
Emerson Authors, Researchers, & Creators
Although focused interests are often associated with a diagnosis of autism, they are common in nonautistic individuals as well. Previous studies have explored how these interests impact cognitive, social, and language development. While some research has suggested that strong interests can detract from learning (particularly for autistic children), newer research has indicated that they can be advantageous. In this pre-registered study, we asked whether focused interests support word learning in 44 autistic children and a vocabulary-matched sample of 44 nonautistic children (mean ages 58 and 34 months respectively). In a word-learning task administered over Zoom, children were exposed to an …
Pathological Mechanisms And Novel Testing Methods In Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, Robert W. Maitta
Pathological Mechanisms And Novel Testing Methods In Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, Robert W. Maitta
Faculty Scholarship
Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is an uncommon, but potentially disabling or even deadly, thrombotic microangiopathy with a well-studied mechanism of ADAMTS13 deficiency or dysfunction. While established treatments are largely effective, the standard ADAMTS13 testing required to definitively diagnose TTP may cause delays in diagnosis and treatment, highlighting the need for rapid and effective diagnostic methods. Additionally, the heterogeneous presentation and varied inciting events of TTP suggest more variation in its mechanism than previously thought, implying three potential pathways rather than the accepted two. The recent discovery of ADAMTS13 conformation as a potential contributor to TTP in addition to the proposal …

Nf-Κb As An Inducible Regulator Of Inflammation In The Central Nervous System, Sudha Anilkumar, Elizabeth Wright-Jin
Nf-Κb As An Inducible Regulator Of Inflammation In The Central Nervous System, Sudha Anilkumar, Elizabeth Wright-Jin
Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
The NF-κB (nuclear factor K-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells) transcription factor family is critical for modulating the immune proinflammatory response throughout the body. During the resting state, inactive NF-κB is sequestered by IκB in the cytoplasm. The proteasomal degradation of IκB activates NF-κB, mediating its translocation into the nucleus to act as a nuclear transcription factor in the upregulation of proinflammatory genes. Stimuli that initiate NF-κB activation are diverse but are canonically attributed to proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines. Downstream effects of NF-κB are cell type-specific and, in the majority of cases, result in the activation of pro-inflammatory cascades. Acting as …

Autobiographical memories play a vital role in shaping personal identity. Therefore, individuals often use various methods like diaries and photographs to preserve precious memories. Tattoos also serve as a means of remembering, yet their role in autobiographical memory has received limited attention in research. To address this gap, we surveyed 161 adults (68.9 per cent female, M = 26.93, SD = 6.57) to explore the life events that motivated their tattoos and to examine their most significant memories. We then compared these findings with significant memories of 185 individuals without tattoos (80.0 per cent female, M = 31.26, SD = …

India is a large middle-income country and has surpassed China in overall population, comprising 20% of the global population (over 1.43 billion people). India is experiencing a major demographic shift in its aging population. Chronic diseases are common among older adults and can be persistent over the life course, lead to the onset of disability, and be costly. Among older adults in India, the existence of multiple comorbid chronic conditions (i.e., multimorbidity) is rapidly growing and represents a burgeoning public health burden. Prior research identified greater rates of multimorbidity (e.g., overweight/obesity diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and malignancies) in minority …

Mesenchymal-epithelial plasticity driving cancer progression in cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) is undetermined. This work identifies a subgroup of CAFs in human breast cancer exhibiting mesenchymal-to-epithelial transition (MET) or epithelial-like profile with high miR-200c expression. MiR-200c overexpression in fibroblasts is sufficient to drive breast cancer aggressiveness. Oxidative stress in the tumor microenvironment induces miR-200c by DNA demethylation. Proteomics, RNA-seq and functional analyses reveal that miR-200c is a novel positive regulator of NFκB-HIF signaling via COMMD1 downregulation and stimulates pro-tumorigenic inflammation and glycolysis. Reprogramming fibroblasts toward MET via miR-200c reduces stemness and induces a senescent phenotype. This pro-tumorigenic profile in CAFs fosters carcinoma …

Consumption of probiotics and/or yogurt could be a solution for restoring the balance of the gut microbiota. This study examined associations of regular intake of probiotic supplements or yogurt with the gut microbiota among a diverse population of older adults (N=1,861; 60–72 years). Fecal microbial composition was obtained from 16S rRNA gene sequencing (V1-V3 region). General Linear Models were used to estimate the associations of probiotic supplement or yogurt intake with microbiome measures adjusting for covariates. Compared to non-yogurt consumers (N=1,023), regular yogurt consumers (≥once/week, N=818) had greater Streptococcus (β=0.29, P=0.0003) and lower Odoribacter (β=−0.33, P<0.0001) abundance. The directions of the above associations were consistent across the five ethnic groups but stronger among Japanese Americans (Streptococcus: β=0.56, P=0.0009; Odoribacter: …0.0001)>
Role Of Glia In Diurnal Rhythms In Neuroinflammation And Blood-Brain Barrier Breakdown, Jennifer Hoi-Ping Lawrence
Role Of Glia In Diurnal Rhythms In Neuroinflammation And Blood-Brain Barrier Breakdown, Jennifer Hoi-Ping Lawrence
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
While inflammation is an important mechanism for the return to homeostasis post insult or injury, inflammation in the central nervous system (CNS) can lead to irreparable damage. To mitigate this process, the brain is protected from circulating neurotoxic molecules as well as peripheral immune cells through the tightly regulated blood-brain barrier (BBB). The balance between pro- and anti- inflammation in the CNS rapidly shifts towards a neurotoxic proinflammatory state during acute bacterial or viral infections or chronic neuroinflammatory diseases. Excessive inflammatory responses are also coupled with extensive BBB leakage and breakdown, allowing rampant entry of peripheral inflammatory cells and mediators …
