Anything But Another Essay: Understanding Undergraduate Stem Student Perceptions Of Creative, Project-Based Learning, Emily M. Redding, Lorelei E. Patrick Apr 2024

Anything But Another Essay: Understanding Undergraduate Stem Student Perceptions Of Creative, Project-Based Learning, Emily M. Redding, Lorelei E. Patrick

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

The training of innovative and diverse scientists starts with creative teaching practices. Much of the pedagogy literature on incorporating nontraditional teaching practices in college STEM courses focuses on the use of in-class active learning activities. Less study has been devoted to creative, project-based assignments, such as “UnEssays”. The “UnEssay” is a semester-long assignment that challenges students to complete a library research project on a topic of their choosing and present it using anything but an essay. Although gaining popularity, few studies have assessed STEM student's perceptions of the assignments. To do so, Zoology students were asked to complete pre- and …

A Novel Study Of Cliff Swallow (Petrochelidon Pyrrhonota) Feather Coloration In Relation To Habitat Characteristics, Colony Size, And Body Condition, Sonja Brandt, Medhavi Ambardar

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Feather coloration is used for social signaling in many avian species, and can be associated with their ability to live and breed in habitats with high quality resources (Jenkins et al. 2013, Saino et al. 2013). It can signify individual quality, (Saino et al. 2013) and influence mate choice (Bennet et al. 1996). We analyzed different aspects of Cliff Swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) feather coloration in relation to morphology and habitat characteristics. We measured luminance, hue (theta and phi), and saturation for four different color patches on the swallows. We predicted that individuals in brighter coloration would be able to settle …

The Conceptual Foundations Of Innate Immunity: Taking Stock 30 Years Later, Thomas Pradeu, Bart P.H.J. Thomma, Stephen E. Girardin, Bruno Lemaitre

Presidential Fellows Articles and Research

While largely neglected over decades during which adaptive immunity captured most of the attention, innate immune mechanisms have now become central to our understanding of immunology. Innate immunity provides the first barrier to infection in vertebrates, and it is the sole mechanism of host defense in invertebrates and plants. Innate immunity also plays a critical role in maintaining homeostasis, shaping the microbiota, and in disease contexts such as cancer, neurodegeneration, metabolic syndromes, and aging. The emergence of the field of innate immunity has led to an expanded view of the immune system, which is no longer restricted to vertebrates and …

Enhancing Pump Efficiency And Reducing Energy Consumption At The Sea Water Distillation Plant Of An Aluminium Company, Essa Binshaqooi

Theses

The objective of this project is to enhance pump efficiency by at least 10% and reduce energy consumption by 5% in the Sea Water Distillation Unit of a major Aluminium Company. Challenges include progressive wear, abrasion, and sea water scaling, which contribute to major losses in pumps, leading to inefficient performance and increased operational costs. Failure Mode Analysis (FMA) and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) were conducted on both Sea Water Pumps (SWPs) and Brine Circulation Pumps (BRPs) to identify these major losses. Strategic improvements recommended for both pumps include the required pump rating, changes in composition, and performance monitoring. Detailed …

The Oracle Of The Pig's Head, Taylor L. Denton Apr 2024

The Oracle Of The Pig's Head, Taylor L. Denton

LSU Master's Theses

The Oracle of the Pig’s Head is a collection of two poems, a short story, and a novel centered around themes of the role of the feminine body in society, monstrosity, disgust, divinity, and human impact on the environment. Inspired by other works of eco-criticism, gothic literature, surrealism, Appalachian folklore, and Greco-Roman mythology, this collection explores how marginalized bodies interact in a world forever altered by climate change.

Denton is primarily interested in how severe climate change has influenced not only human’s overall relationship to the environment, but also how writers are meant to engage with a world riddled with …

Research Proposal: Examination Of Bacterial Communities In Soil Beneath Decaying Organic Matter And The Effect Of Insect Succession, Olivia Fotiadis

2024 Student Academic Showcase

Bacterial species of the Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, and Bacteroidetes phyla are key components in decomposing organic matter by secreting specialized enzymes into decaying material, facilitating its breakdown and nutrient release. Diverse microbial communities in areas of decomposition are known for their efficiency in decomposition and nutrient cycling. Less is understood about the effect of insects introducing unique microbes alongside initial soil bacteria, like Bacillus subtilis, in the decomposition process. Studying the decomposition of pork samples as a human analog will explore variations in bacterial populations in soil before and after the introduction of insect-mediated microbes and provide information on the efficiency …

Understanding The Relationship Between Choice Of Pet And Priorities In An Intimate Relationship - A Research Proposal, Kaitlyn Guthrie Apr 2024

Understanding The Relationship Between Choice Of Pet And Priorities In An Intimate Relationship - A Research Proposal, Kaitlyn Guthrie

2024 Student Academic Showcase

This proposed research study aims to see if an individual’s choice of pet reflect the things that they value most in an intimate relationship. Pets have become more popular over the years, and a common theme for choosing a pet is whether or not the animal will be a good fit for the individual’s lifestyle. Since dogs are known to be social and affectionate creatures, I believe that individuals who have pet dogs may require more physical affection and a sense of togetherness in an intimate relationship in order to feel satisfied. I believe that individuals who own cats, though …

Wnk Kinase Is A Vasoactive Chloride Sensor In Endothelial Cells, Tessa A C Garrud, Briar Bell, Alejandro Mata-Daboin, Dieniffer Peixoto-Neves, Daniel M Collier, Julio F Cordero-Morales, Jonathan H Jaggar

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Endothelial cells (ECs) line the wall of blood vessels and regulate arterial contractility to tune regional organ blood flow and systemic pressure. Chloride (Cl-) is the most abundant anion in ECs and the Cl- sensitive With-No-Lysine (WNK) kinase is expressed in this cell type. Whether intracellular Cl- signaling and WNK kinase regulate EC function to alter arterial contractility is unclear. Here, we tested the hypothesis that intracellular Cl- signaling in ECs regulates arterial contractility and examined the signaling mechanisms involved, including the participation of WNK kinase. Our data obtained using two-photon microscopy and cell-specific inducible knockout mice indicated that acetylcholine, …

A sanitary challenge was carried out to induce suboptimal herd health while investigating the effect of amino acids supplementation on piglet responses. Weaned piglets of high sanitary status (6.33 ± 0.91 kg of BW) were distributed in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement into two similar facilities with contrasting sanitary conditions and two different diets. Our results suggest that increased Trp, Thr, and Met dietary supplementation could support the immune systems of piglets under a sanitary challenge. In this manner, AA+ supplementation improved the performance and metabolism of piglets under mixed management and poor sanitary conditions. No major temporal microbiome …

The Effect Of Sodium Bicarbonate Supplementation In Markers Of Gut Permeability And Gastrointestinal Discomfort After Exercise In The Heat, Suzana Andrade De Oliveira

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Exercise performed under heat stress conditions is associated with an increase in gut permeability, commonly known as "leaky gut.". Recent studies suggest that sodium bicarbonate ingestion (NaHCO3) before exercise in the heat may offer ergogenic benefits. However, NaHCO3 is known to induce gastrointestinal discomfort (GI) and potentially exacerbate gut permeability. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of NaHCO3 on markers of gut permeability and gastrointestinal discomfort after prolonged physical exercise in a hot environment. To test this, we analyzed markers of intestinal permeability and injury pre and post exercise under heat stress comparing a NaHCO3 group to a placebo group. …

The Aggregation Effect Of Offshore Mussel Farming On Pelagic Fishes, D Bridger, Mj Attrill, Se Rees, Ev Sheehan Apr 2024

The Aggregation Effect Of Offshore Mussel Farming On Pelagic Fishes, D Bridger, Mj Attrill, Se Rees, Ev Sheehan

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The increase in hard artificial structures in the marine environment is contributing to ocean sprawl. As well as adding hard structure to the seabed, mussel aquaculture adds rope droppers and anchor lines to the water column, where such structure would otherwise be absent. This paper aims to monitor the effects of mussel headlines on the pelagic fish community over time, as well as to investigate whether there is an interaction between the age of cultivated mussels with the number of epibiota species and the abundance of pelagic fishes. Two surveys were carried out: a time series monitoring survey to assess …

The Effects Of Acute And Chronic Ethanol Exposure On Mouse Spontaneous Spatial Behaviors, Tia Donaldson Apr 2024

The Effects Of Acute And Chronic Ethanol Exposure On Mouse Spontaneous Spatial Behaviors, Tia Donaldson

Psychology ETDs

Within the open field, rodents spontaneously explore their surroundings by alternating between stops (absence of movement) and progressions (locomotion between locations). Few studies have examined how alcohol influences the organization of these spatial behaviors; therefore, we evaluated the effects of acute single-dose and binge-like alcohol exposure on spontaneous open-field behaviors. In Experiment 1, adults received a single injection of ethanol and explored a dark environment for 30 minutes. We found that mice assessed immediately after the injection exhibited reductions in locomotion and spontaneous behavior, while those tested 30 minutes later only exhibited suppressed locomotion. In Experiment 2, adolescent/adult mice received …

Constitutional Rights Of Artificial Intelligence, Mizuki Hashiguchi Apr 2024

Constitutional Rights Of Artificial Intelligence, Mizuki Hashiguchi

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

On February 8, 2022, the Italian Parliament approved constitutional amendments to protect the environment. A member of Parliament stated that the environment is an element of Italy, and that safeguarding the environment means safeguarding humans. The need to protect the environment seems to have become a critical component of public conscience. Likewise, if society perceives that artificial intelligence is vitally important for humanity, does constitutional law allow constitutional rights for artificial intelligence to be created?

Extending constitutional rights to artificial intelligence may be consistent with the jurisprudential history of rights. Constitutional rights have undergone metamorphosis over time to protect new …
