Linear And Nonlinear Behaviors Of The Photoreceptor Coupled Network, Ji-Jie Pang, Xiaolong Jiang, Samuel M Wu Apr 2024

Linear And Nonlinear Behaviors Of The Photoreceptor Coupled Network, Ji-Jie Pang, Xiaolong Jiang, Samuel M Wu

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Photoreceptors are electrically coupled to one another, and the spatiotemporal properties of electrical synapses in a two-dimensional retinal network are still not well studied, because of the limitation of the single electrode or pair recording techniques which do not allow simultaneously measuring responses of multiple photoreceptors at various locations in the retina. A multiple electrode recording system is needed. In this study, we investigate the network properties of the two-dimensional rod coupled array of the salamander retina (both sexes were used) by using the newly available multiple patch electrode system that allows simultaneous recordings from up to eight cells and …

Encoding Of Visual Objects In The Human Medial Temporal Lobe, Yue Wang, Runnan Cao, Shuo Wang Apr 2024

Encoding Of Visual Objects In The Human Medial Temporal Lobe, Yue Wang, Runnan Cao, Shuo Wang

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The human medial temporal lobe (MTL) plays a crucial role in recognizing visual objects, a key cognitive function that relies on the formation of semantic representations. Nonetheless, it remains unknown how visual information of general objects is translated into semantic representations in the MTL. Furthermore, the debate about whether the human MTL is involved in perception has endured for a long time. To address these questions, we investigated three distinct models of neural object coding-semantic coding, axis-based feature coding, and region-based feature coding-in each subregion of the human MTL, using high-resolution fMRI in two male and six female participants. Our …

Tabletized Nanomedicine: From The Current Scenario To Developing Future Medicine, Rahul Tiwari, Meghana Kolli, Sumeet S. Chauhan, Murali Yallapu

School of Medicine Publications

The limitations of conventional therapeutic treatments prevailed in the development of nanotechnology-based medical formulations, termed nanomedicine. Nanomedicine is an advanced medicine that often consists of therapeutic agent(s) embedded in biodegradable or biocompatible nanomaterial-based formulations. Among nanomedicine approaches, tablet (oral) nanomedicine is still under development. In tabletized nanomedicine, the dynamic interplay between nanoformulations and the intricate milieu of the gastrointestinal tract simulates a pivotal role, particularly accentuating the influence exerted upon the luminal, mucosal, and epithelial cells. In this work, we document the perspectives and opportunities of nanoformulations toward the development of tabletized nanomedicine. This review also unveils the notion of …

Characterization Of Early Markers Of Disease In The Mouse Model Of Mucopolysaccharidosis Iiib, Katherine B Mccullough, Amanda Titus, Kate Reardon, Sara Conyers, Joseph D Dougherty, Xia Ge, Joel R Garbow, Patricia Dickson, Carla M Yuede, Susan E Maloney

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) IIIB, also known as Sanfilippo Syndrome B, is a devastating childhood disease. Unfortunately, there are currently no available treatments for MPS IIIB patients. Yet, animal models of lysosomal storage diseases have been valuable tools in identifying promising avenues of treatment. Enzyme replacement therapy, gene therapy, and bone marrow transplant have all shown efficacy in the MPS IIIB model systems. A ubiquitous finding across rodent models of lysosomal storage diseases is that the best treatment outcomes resulted from intervention prior to symptom onset. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to identify early markers of disease in …

“Hell Is Only A Word. The Reality Is Much, Much Worse”: Black Holes As Fantasy Gateways To Hell, Kristine Larsen Apr 2024

“Hell Is Only A Word. The Reality Is Much, Much Worse”: Black Holes As Fantasy Gateways To Hell, Kristine Larsen

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

While the genre of space horror is generically defined as simply space-based horror, there exist specific tropes that can be used to identify representative works. Among these are: (i) a relatively small ensemble cast, (ii) many of whom die over the course of the story; (iii) a secret corporate/political/military agenda and (iv) physical and psychological stresses due to the arduous process of space travel and related isolation. A subset of space horror adds metaphysical elements, drawing connections to Hell, more specifically a liminal space that Victor Turner terms the “betwixt and between.” As the region around and within the event …

Hell On His Mind: Dean Winchester’S Journey To Hell And Back, Anna Caterino Apr 2024

Hell On His Mind: Dean Winchester’S Journey To Hell And Back, Anna Caterino

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Season three of Supernatural (2005-2020) closes with a shot of Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) in Hell. The place has no discernible features and resembles neither the long waiting line nor the gothic castle of later seasons. What is does resemble is a brain, with a labyrinth of ropes reminiscent of neurons, suggesting Hell is a place that exists first and foremost in Dean’s head. The lack of establishing shots and the abstract terms used to discuss Hell, damnation, and Dean’s experience present the viewer with a physical place into which all of Dean’s fears and trauma converge. This essay analyzes …

Denial And Acceptance: A Core Myth Of Orpheus And Eurydice In The Modern Lyric, Brian O. Murdoch Apr 2024

Denial And Acceptance: A Core Myth Of Orpheus And Eurydice In The Modern Lyric, Brian O. Murdoch

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

The story of Orpheus’s failed attempt to bring Eurydice back from the dead is a frequently used theme in literature and in the modern lyric in particular, and it has been the subject of sometimes excessively complex critical attention. One core of the myth, however, is the need for the living to face and to accept the fact of the death of someone close to them. Modern lyrics in different European languages—the heirs to the classical myth—make clear how Orpheus’s attempt to bring his wife back from Hades was always impossible, and that his reaction was thus a form of …

Substance Abuse: The Symbolic Geography Of Hell In The Great Divorce, Richard A. Bergen Apr 2024

Substance Abuse: The Symbolic Geography Of Hell In The Great Divorce, Richard A. Bergen

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Blake’s The Marriage of Heaven and Hell is a Romantic vision of evil energy that reaches to the heavens, a geographical representation of capacity and scope and perpetual cosmic change. On the other hand, Lewis’s vision of hell in The Great Divorce is that of a land without substance: a conurbation of addiction to mental maladies, an endless mental substance abuse, an emptying of presence, and a banal stasis to the journey of the soul. Many of Lewis’s sources and inspirations for The Great Divorce, similarly, portray hell as a land of paradoxical “seeming-largeness”, while having ontological smallness. Throughout …

Investigating The Binding Mechanism Of Draq5, Katelyn Finnerty Apr 2024

Investigating The Binding Mechanism Of Draq5, Katelyn Finnerty

Liberty University Research Week

DRAQ5 is a synthetic fluorescent dye. Most commonly it is used to tag double stranded DNA. Since the dye is able to permeate the cell membrane, it often binds to the nucleus of the cell. This makes the dye useful in analyzing cell cycles. DRAQ5 can be used in many medical fields like immunocytochemistry and immunohistochemistry, and applications like flow cytometry and high content screening. Upon a brief inspection of the literature surrounding DRAQ5, there seemed to be some inconsistencies when talking about the binding mechanism in particular. DRAQ5 can be seen to be described as having both an intercalant …

Investigating Antimicrobial Properties Released From Developing Amphibian Eggs, Olivia Grimsley Apr 2024

Investigating Antimicrobial Properties Released From Developing Amphibian Eggs, Olivia Grimsley

Liberty University Research Week

Early amphibian development often occurs in a hostile environment, abundant with potential predators and pathogens. While it is known that amphibian eggs are protected physically by 5-8 layers of glycoprotein jelly, additional protection mechanisms used against water pathogens are largely unknown. Previous research in our lab has indicated that amphibian eggs exhibit a unique microbiome on the egg surface which is distinct from the surrounding environment. This uniqueness may indicate defensive, rather than offensive, resistance by developing eggs to microbes. A recent series of experiments in our lab to observe a defensive/offensive response have not provided clarity. This project is …

Is The Perfect Soccer Ball Still Out There? A Review And Optimization Of The Beautiful Game., Joshua Walker Apr 2024

Is The Perfect Soccer Ball Still Out There? A Review And Optimization Of The Beautiful Game., Joshua Walker

Liberty University Research Week

Soccer, or football as known in the majority of the world, is the largest sport by fanbase in the world. One of the most critical components of the sport is the ball that is used in the game. The ball has seen many improvements made to every component of the ball and every step of the manufacturing process. Most notable of these improvements made is to the outside of the soccer ball. Old soccer balls were made using a leather cover. This covering would quickly affect the performance of the ball as excess moisture would be absorbed by the leather. …

Fda Investigational New Drug (Ind) Applications, Cassandra Taylor Apr 2024

Fda Investigational New Drug (Ind) Applications, Cassandra Taylor

Oxford ICSB

Current Federal law requires that a drug be the subject of an approved marketing application before it is transported or distributed across state lines. Because a sponsor will probably want to ship the investigational drug to clinical investigators in many states, it must seek an exemption from that legal requirement. The IND is the means through which the sponsor technically obtains this exemption from the FDA. During a new drug's early preclinical development, the sponsor's primary goal is to determine if the product is reasonably safe for initial use in humans, and if the compound exhibits pharmacological activity that justifies …

Yayoi Kusama’S Depictions Of Mental Health, Anna Isabel Davis Apr 2024

Yayoi Kusama’S Depictions Of Mental Health, Anna Isabel Davis

Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research

This paper examines Yayoi Kusama’s usage of art as a coping mechanism for her mental illness, particularly through her pumpkins and “nets” motifs. It involves a close analysis of three artworks to emphasize this motif: her first depiction of pumpkins; “nets”; and, finally, her combination of both pumpkins and “nets” into one artwork. Her theme of repetitions as meditative force is evident in each of these works. As such, this paper posits that the goal of her art is not to heal from her mental illness but to better cope and adapt. This research draws on various primary sources, including …

Effects Of Dissolved Oxygen On Northern Leopard Frog (Lithobates Pipiens) Gastrocnemius Muscle Recruitment And Fatigue, Eva L. Gates, Joseph P. Levri Apr 2024

Effects Of Dissolved Oxygen On Northern Leopard Frog (Lithobates Pipiens) Gastrocnemius Muscle Recruitment And Fatigue, Eva L. Gates, Joseph P. Levri

Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research

Dissolved oxygen levels in aquatic systems have decreased because of temperature increases caused by climate change, which in turn has affected ecosystems and wildlife. Many physiological processes in aquatic organisms require a certain dissolved-oxygen range, and decreasing levels can compromise proper functioning. Previous studies have linked muscle performance to dissolved oxygen levels in a variety of aquatic species, but less research has been dedicated to amphibians. Because many amphibians engage in cutaneous respiration, especially when dwelling in aquatic habitats, dissolved oxygen levels may have a significant impact on muscle performance in this taxon. This experiment investigated the effects of dissolved …

Stream Gauging: Investigating The Flow Rate And Residence Time In Laguna Bacalar, Mexico, Elizabeth J. Kowalczyk Apr 2024

Stream Gauging: Investigating The Flow Rate And Residence Time In Laguna Bacalar, Mexico, Elizabeth J. Kowalczyk

Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research

Stream gauging is a standard tool used to measure the flow rate of various bodies of water. Knowing the flow rate of a body of water allows for the residence time of a body of water to be calculated. Currently, there is very little information regarding the flow rate and residence times of Laguna Bacalar. This system has been observed hydrologically consistently only in the past 6 years. In this study, 13 stream-gauging locations of interest were identified and gauged for their respective flow rates using the midsection method. Once the flow rates were acquired, maps depicting the Laguna Bacalar …

Psychosocial Student Adaptations To Covid-19 In Higher Education: A Mixed-Methods Approach To Covid-19 Through The Theoretical Framework Of Anomie, Grace Johnson Apr 2024

Psychosocial Student Adaptations To Covid-19 In Higher Education: A Mixed-Methods Approach To Covid-19 Through The Theoretical Framework Of Anomie, Grace Johnson

Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research

The COVID-19 pandemic affected individuals and social institutions because of an abrupt and expansive change to norms and values, which are key characteristics of an anomic state. The purpose of this exploratory and descriptive study was to understand how students enrolled at a residential university perceived educational and societal pressures associated with COVID-19. This research applied a mixed-methods approach and relied upon three phrases of research: (1) pilot questionnaire (n = 54), (2) qualitative interviews (n = 14), and (3) quantitative questionnaire (n = 253). Findings suggested similarities in how university students responded to COVID-19 and how communities had responded …

Introduction To The Premarket Review Of Human Food Ingredients In The United States And Concepts In The Safety Assessment Of Novel Plant-Derived Ingredients, Troy Hubbard Apr 2024

Introduction To The Premarket Review Of Human Food Ingredients In The United States And Concepts In The Safety Assessment Of Novel Plant-Derived Ingredients, Troy Hubbard

Oxford ICSB

Premarket regulation of ingredients added to food is a key pillar ensuring the safety of food as it allows the opportunity to address potential safety concerns prior to consumer exposure. In the United States, food and color additives are substances that are intentionally added to food and are subject to pre-market approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and require a listing in the Code of Federal Regulations, unless the intended use of the substance is generally recognized as safe (GRAS), among qualified experts. GRAS is not an inherent property of a substance, as is often misunderstood; rather, it …

Enterolactone As A Potential Therapeutic Agent For Treatment Of Type-Two Diabetes, Abigail Frommack Apr 2024

Enterolactone As A Potential Therapeutic Agent For Treatment Of Type-Two Diabetes, Abigail Frommack

Liberty University Research Week

Type-two diabetes (T2D) results from insulin resistance causing persistent high blood glucose levels, despite a normal production of insulin. While studying the impact of various coffee polyphenol derivatives, we discovered that enterolactone (ENL) induces glucose uptake in differentiated adipocytes. Insulin-dependent glucose uptake occurs in various cell types, but primarily in adipose and muscle cells. This study focuses on adipose cells, specifically characterizing the mechanism of ENL induced glucose uptake. The goal of our study is to characterize the molecular mechanism of ENL to promote glucose uptake in 3T3-L1 differentiated adipocytes. 3T3-L1 differentiated adipocytes were treated with Enterolactone in a concentration-dependent …
