Biomechanics Of Transduction By Mechanosensory Cilia For Prey Detection In Aquatic Organisms, Faye Piephoff, Brian K. Taylor Apr 2024

Biomechanics Of Transduction By Mechanosensory Cilia For Prey Detection In Aquatic Organisms, Faye Piephoff, Brian K. Taylor

Faculty Scholarship

Surface-feeding aquatic animals navigate towards the source of water disturbances and must differentiate prey from other environmental stimuli. Medicinal leeches locate prey, in part, using a distribution of mechanosensory hairs along their body that deflect under fluid flow. Leech's behavioral responses to surface wave temporal frequency are well documented. However, a surface wave's temporal frequency depends on many underlying environmental and fluid properties that vary substantially in natural habitats (e.g., water depth, temperature). The impact of these variables on neural response and behavior is unknown. Here, we developed a physics-based leech mechanosensor model to examine the impact of environmental and …

Convening The Counter-Conversation: Critical Participatory Action Research Against Real-Time Repression, Connor Maguire, Leo Jalipa, Anne Grass

Dissertations

This dissertation presents the anti-fascist Critical Participatory Action Research (CPAR) process of three doctoral student participants/co-researchers, all practicing educators, with varied experiences in public and private education at the middle school, high school, and collegiate level. This research examines the convergence of the participants/co-researchers in response to their shared concerns about ascendent authoritarianism and rising repression and the subsequent formation of this study’s in-process CPAR research collective organized to critically counter, rather than reiterate, this repression.

Enacting the theoretical/methodological frameworks of Critical Theory and Habermas’s Theory of Communicative Action, the participants/co-researchers dialogically determined contemporary fascism to be the focus of …

Depletion Of Protein Phosphatase 1 Results In Persistent Activation Of The Integrated Stress Response And Age-Associated Exacerbation Of Pulmonary Veno-Occlusive Disease, Amit Prabhakar, Meetu Wadhwa, Prajakta Ghatpande, Rahul Kumar, Brian B. Graham, Giorgio Lagna, Akiko Hata Apr 2024

Depletion Of Protein Phosphatase 1 Results In Persistent Activation Of The Integrated Stress Response And Age-Associated Exacerbation Of Pulmonary Veno-Occlusive Disease, Amit Prabhakar, Meetu Wadhwa, Prajakta Ghatpande, Rahul Kumar, Brian B. Graham, Giorgio Lagna, Akiko Hata

Biology

Pulmonary veno-occlusive disease (PVOD) is a form of pulmonary hypertension that affects individuals across the age spectrum. PVOD is characterized by the obstruction of small pulmonary vessels, causing increased pulmonary artery (PA) pressure and leading to right ventricular heart (RV) failure. Previous research showed that the administration of Mitomycin-C (MMC) in rats mediates PVOD through the activation of the eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF2) kinase PKR and the integrated stress response (ISR), resulting in the impairment of vascular endothelial junctional structure and barrier function. In this study, we reveal that older rats experience more severe pulmonary vascular remodeling and RV …

Faculty Research 2024

N-acetyl-L-cysteine (L-NAC) is a proposed therapeutic for opioid use disorder. This study determined whether co-injections of L-NAC (500 μmol/kg, IV) or its highly cell-penetrant analogue, L-NAC methyl ester (L-NACme, 500 μmol/kg, IV), prevent acquisition of acute physical dependence induced by twice-daily injections of fentanyl (125 μg/kg, IV), and overcome acquired dependence to these injections in freely-moving male Sprague Dawley rats. The injection of the opioid receptor antagonist, naloxone HCl (NLX; 1.5 mg/kg, IV), elicited a series of withdrawal phenomena (i.e. behavioral and cardiorespiratory responses, hypothermia and body weight loss) in rats that received 5 or 10 injections of fentanyl and …

Enhancing Public Access To Agency Law, Bernard Bell, Cary Coglianese, Michael Herz, Margaret Kwoka, Orly Lobel

Articles

A just, democratic society governed by the rule of law requires that the law be available, not hidden. This principle extends to legal materials produced by administrative agencies, all of which should be made widely accessible to the public. Federal agencies in the United States do disclose online many legal documents—sometimes voluntarily, sometimes in compliance with statutory requirements. But the scope and consistency of these disclosures leaves considerable room for improvement. After conducting a year-long study for the Administrative Conference of the United States, we identified seventeen possible statutory amendments that would improve proactive online disclosure of agency legal materials. …

College of Pharmacy Faculty Papers

Clofazimine and Arbidol have both been reported to be effective in vitro SARS-CoV-2 fusion inhibitors. Both are promising drugs that have been repurposed for the treatment of COVID-19 and have been used in several previous and ongoing clinical trials. Small-molecule bindings to expressed constructs of the trimeric S2 segment of Spike and the full-length SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein were measured using a Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) binding assay. We demonstrate that Clofazimine, Toremifene, Arbidol and its derivatives bind to the S2 segment of the Spike protein. Clofazimine provided the most reliable and highest-quality SPR data for binding with S2 over the …

Anthropogenic Noise Limits Resource Distribution Without Changing Social Hierarchies, S. Tidau, Mark Briffa Apr 2024

Anthropogenic Noise Limits Resource Distribution Without Changing Social Hierarchies, S. Tidau, Mark Briffa

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Increasing evidence demonstrates that anthropogenic noise is a global pollutant that threatens marine ecosystems. Mounting numbers of studies show its diverse effects on individuals and their behaviour. However, little is known about how individual changes in response to anthropogenic noise could cascade through groups and populations affecting resource distribution vital for survival and fitness. Here we test the hypotheses that anthropogenic noise could alter resource distribution, associated hierarchies and consequently individual benefits. We used groups of hermit crabs, a globally distributed model system for assessing impacts of environmental change on wildlife and measured in controlled laboratory conditions the resource distribution …

Contemporary Mythology: Poems Of Creatures And Grievances, Zane G. Segal Apr 2024

Contemporary Mythology: Poems Of Creatures And Grievances, Zane G. Segal

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Urban legends and modern folklore have never been popular subjects in the canon of serious poetry, despite their more ancient counterparts being frequently coveted content. In a post-science world, the uncanny hearsay of yesteryear has lost its star power, and the act of believing in such myths has been relegated to an embarrassing pastime of drunk uncles and gullible dimwits. However, Contemporary Mythology is a collection of poems which are not afraid to be embarrassed. By entertaining the lovable qualities of unlovable monsters, these poems seek the resonance which keep urban legends comfortably lodged in the backlogs of American culture. …

Dispossession Of Ancestral Land: Effect Of Displacement On Indigenous Peoples' Life Satifaction, Kaitlyn Bird, Hailey Shangin, Alana Smutz, Julisa Lopez, Adam Farero, Stephanie Fryberg

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

North America's history of forced displacement and relocation of Indigenous tribes continues to affect contemporary Indigenous peoples (Wolfe, 2006). As climate change, socioeconomic disparities, and industry encroachment shape displacement, Indigenous people continue to be negatively impacted (Covey, 2021). The current work explores how displacement impacts life satisfaction for Indigenous Peoples, and whether cultural embeddedness modifies this relationship. Using the Indigenous Climate Justice survey (N=282), regression analysis illustrates that those who have not been displaced generally report higher life satisfaction than those who have been displaced (β=-0.255, SE= 0.108 p= 0.019). Lower reported life satisfaction is especially prevalent when those displaced …

The Effect Of Livestock Grazing On Sharp-Tailed Grouse Nesting, Abigail I. League Apr 2024

The Effect Of Livestock Grazing On Sharp-Tailed Grouse Nesting, Abigail I. League

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

This past summer, I worked for Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks on the first reintroduction effort of sharp-tailed grouse to western Montana following their extirpation from the region in the late 2000s. I was monitoring nest success, specifically in the Blackfoot Valley, and it was apparent that the nest survival rate was considerably low. Researchers do not know the exact reason sharp-tailed grouse were originally extirpated from the region. However, it has been hypothesized that the use of proper livestock grazing practices could be an important factor in increasing the probability of successfully establishing a population. For this project, I …

Design Students’ Perspectives On Safety Concerns When Designing Future Tourism Services, Minna Virkkula, Laura Hokkanen, Jonna Häkkilä

GSTC Academic Symposium - In conjunction with the GSTC Global Conference

The safety of services is essential part of a company's social responsibility. In the tourism industry, ensuring the safety of services is crucial, but often overlooked in the design process. Incorporating safety aspects during the initial design phase can eliminate potential safety issues and improve quality of the services. By addressing safety concerns early on, unnecessary worries related to activities and services can be resolved. This paper examines the design perspective on safety in Lapland outdoor activities. Two studies were conducted with art and design students, including an online survey to identify safety concerns in various tourist scenarios, and a …

Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Methane Efflux In A Controlled Flooded Forest Inside Biosphere 2, Junior Burks Apr 2024

Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Methane Efflux In A Controlled Flooded Forest Inside Biosphere 2, Junior Burks

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Due to its greater radiative forcing potency compared to carbon dioxide, gaseous methane plays a key role in our climate system. Wetland ecosystems constitute a significant portion of the global methane cycle, with one major source of emissions being from annually flooded forests in the Amazon basin. Recent research has shown that tree stems can significantly contribute to the methane flux from waterlogged ecosystems (Pangala et al. 2013, 2017). However, to fully assess the influence of tree stem fluxes on flooded forest methane emissions and the global budget, we need to better understand the spatial and temporal variability of the …

Once A Loser, Always A Loser: Effects Of Social Defeat In Fruit Flies, Erin Szalda-Petree, Deanna Cuello, Wyatt Ploot Apr 2024

Once A Loser, Always A Loser: Effects Of Social Defeat In Fruit Flies, Erin Szalda-Petree, Deanna Cuello, Wyatt Ploot

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Animals often behave in ways that align with the underlying social structure of their species. Existing lower in the social hierarchy can have negative consequences for health and well-being, including changes in appetite and depression-like symptoms (Becker et al., 2008). In Drosophila melanogaster, the male social hierarchy is determined by aggressive encounters in which one fly becomes a dominant winner and one becomes a submissive loser. Interestingly, flies that have previously lost a fight are more likely to lose the next one (Yurkovic et al., 2006). This adoption of a “loser” phenotype in turn affects other behaviors such as courtship …

Estimation Of Probability Of Habitat Use Of Roosevelt Elk On The Olympic Peninsula, Vincent Gugliotti Apr 2024

Estimation Of Probability Of Habitat Use Of Roosevelt Elk On The Olympic Peninsula, Vincent Gugliotti

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Estimating the probability of habitat use for a particular species is crucial to the direct management and conservation of that species. Without knowledge of habitat preferences, managers cannot effectively focus efforts on vital resources or landscape types. However, modelling probability of habitat use can be done in several ways which leaves room for variation and uncertainty in the estimates produced by each method. This study is an examination of the variation between two estimates of probability of habitat use while focusing on a particular subspecies of elk that inhabits a unique ecosystem relative to other common elk habitats. I will …

Effects Of Kappa Opioid Receptor Manipulation On Methamphetamine-Induced Behavioral Sensitization In Adolescent Male And Female Rats, Hiroyoshi Matsui Mr, Sarah Seeley, Manoranjan S. D'Souza Apr 2024

Effects Of Kappa Opioid Receptor Manipulation On Methamphetamine-Induced Behavioral Sensitization In Adolescent Male And Female Rats, Hiroyoshi Matsui Mr, Sarah Seeley, Manoranjan S. D'Souza

ONU Student Research Colloquium

Methamphetamine abuse amongst adolescents has been on the rise in the United States. In this study, we assessed the effects of manipulation of KORs on methamphetamine-induced behavioral sensitization in adolescent male and female rats. Methamphetamine-induced behavioral sensitization is an animal model to study methamphetamine addiction. Behavioral sensitization usually occurs in animals who have been treated with methamphetamine followed by a period of withdrawal. It is hypothesized that brain circuits are altered during the period of withdrawal after methamphetamine exposure resulting in sensitized (increased) responses to methamphetamine at the end of the withdrawal period. The experiment was conducted over 28 days. …
