Influence Of Forest Management On Bumblebee-Plant Networks And Community Compositions In Eastern Kentucky Forest Openings, Kassandra Carter Apr 2024

Influence Of Forest Management On Bumblebee-Plant Networks And Community Compositions In Eastern Kentucky Forest Openings, Kassandra Carter

Online Theses and Dissertations

Both the productivity of agricultural systems and functioning of terrestrial ecosystems are reliant on animal pollinators to facilitate plant reproduction. Yet the integrity of these pollination services is threatened by the declines of pollinators. Mounting evidence indicates landscape homogenization in agricultural, urban, and most notably in natural systems have corresponded with substantial changes in bumblebee distribution, abundance, composition, and forage resource availability. Naturally occurring forest openings, barrens, and grasslands have historically provided important habitat for native bees across the otherwise forested landscape in the eastern United States. Fire suppression and the loss of these important habitats are well-documented, but it …

An Estrogen Receptor Α-Derived Peptide Improves Glucose Homeostasis During Obesity, Wanbao Yang, Wen Jiang, Wang Liao, Hui Yan, Weiqi Ai, Quan Pan, Wesley A Brashear, Yong Xu, Ling He, Shaodong Guo

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Estrogen receptor α (ERα) plays a crucial role in regulating glucose and energy homeostasis during type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Here we find a ligand-independent effect of ERα on the regulation of glucose homeostasis. Deficiency of ERα in the liver impairs glucose homeostasis in male, female, and ovariectomized (OVX) female mice. Mechanistic studies reveal that ERα promotes hepatic insulin sensitivity by suppressing ubiquitination-induced IRS1 degradation. The ERα 1-280 domain mediates the ligand-independent effect of ERα on insulin sensitivity. Furthermore, we identify a peptide based on ERα 1-280 domain and find that ERα-derived peptide …

Spontaneous cancers in companion dogs are robust models of human disease. Tracking tumor-specific immune responses in these models requires reagents to perform species-specific single cell T cell receptor sequencing (scTCRseq). scTCRseq and integration with scRNA data have not been demonstrated on companion dogs with cancer. Here, five healthy dogs, two dogs with T cell lymphoma and four dogs with melanoma are selected to demonstrate applicability of scTCRseq in a cancer immunotherapy setting. Single-cell suspensions of PBMCs or lymph node aspirates are profiled using scRNA and dog-specific scTCRseq primers. In total, 77,809 V(D)J-expressing cells are detected, with an average of 3498 …

A Cryptid For Catholics And Communists: The Asuang As An Apparatus For Socio-Political Control In The History Of The Philippines, Alexandra Eckhart

Honors Projects

This essay explores the utilization of folklore beliefs in psychological warfare through a comparative analysis of General Edward Geary Lansdale's tactics during the Hukbalahap insurgency at the beginning of the Cold War and the historical exploitation of the asuang myth by Spanish Catholic missionaries in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. While both instances involved leveraging local superstitions to influence behavior, their motivations and approaches diverged significantly. Unlike the missionaries, Lansdale's actions stemmed from a strategic imperative to combat communism rather than a sense of racial superiority or religious domination. Drawing parallels between Lansdale's methods and centuries-old patterns of oppression, this …

Harmonizing Soybean-Associated Beneficial Bacteria For Sustainable Cultivation, Jonas J. Padilla Apr 2024

Harmonizing Soybean-Associated Beneficial Bacteria For Sustainable Cultivation, Jonas J. Padilla

LSU Master's Theses

Long-term reliance on agrochemicals, such as fertilizers and pesticides, to improve crop productivity can severely impact soil physicochemical properties and health. This eventually leads us to completely depend on these chemicals to sustain the needs of our crops. To resuscitate the deteriorating state of our arable lands, we need to shift from traditional farming to more sustainable crop management. One of the alternatives that we can use instead of these chemicals is the utilization of microorganisms that can perform a variety of beneficial functions for the growth and development of crops. Recently, seed-treating materials made up of bacterial consortia were …

Neural And Computational Mechanisms Of Effort Under The Pressure Of A Deadline, Andrea Pisauro, Daniele Pollicino, Lucy Fisher, Matthew A.J. Apps Apr 2024

Neural And Computational Mechanisms Of Effort Under The Pressure Of A Deadline, Andrea Pisauro, Daniele Pollicino, Lucy Fisher, Matthew A.J. Apps

School of Psychology

Deadlines fundamentally shape the motivation for effort. Research examining effort-based choices findshigh effort is an avoided cost. However, this work overlooks the fact that effort can be valuable when itmakes progress on long-term goals before deadlines. We test a new framework where motivationdepends on deadline pressure (work remaining / time remaining). Across three studies we usecomputational modelling on novel tasks examining effort-based decisions when effort makes progresson goals with deadlines. In support of hypotheses, deadline pressure significantly impacts decisionmaking, shifting people from avoiding effort, to seeking and valuing it. Using ultra-high-field fMRI, weshow that functionally connected putamen and midcingulate cortex …

A Comparative Study On X-Ray Image Enhancement Based On Neutrosophic Set, Nihal N.Mostafa, Amit Krishan Kumar, Yasir Ali

Sustainable Machine Intelligence Journal

Medical image noise, ambiguity, and fuzziness pose challenges to the medical image analysis process. To lessen these problems, fuzzy sets are utilized; however, they frequently ignore the pixel's spatial context. The neutrosophic set (NS) is employed in picture denoising to get over these restrictions. Neutronosophic theory, in particular the NS Bilateral filter, NS Wiener filter, NS Median filter, NS gaussian filter, and NS rank-ordered filter, is covered in this paper. The Lung-cancer dataset of X-Ray images is used to assess the performance of different denoising techniques. The effectiveness of NS-based denoising techniques over conventional techniques is demonstrated through comparisons with …

Biomechanics Of Transduction By Mechanosensory Cilia For Prey Detection In Aquatic Organisms, Faye Piephoff, Brian K. Taylor Apr 2024

Biomechanics Of Transduction By Mechanosensory Cilia For Prey Detection In Aquatic Organisms, Faye Piephoff, Brian K. Taylor

Faculty Scholarship

Surface-feeding aquatic animals navigate towards the source of water disturbances and must differentiate prey from other environmental stimuli. Medicinal leeches locate prey, in part, using a distribution of mechanosensory hairs along their body that deflect under fluid flow. Leech's behavioral responses to surface wave temporal frequency are well documented. However, a surface wave's temporal frequency depends on many underlying environmental and fluid properties that vary substantially in natural habitats (e.g., water depth, temperature). The impact of these variables on neural response and behavior is unknown. Here, we developed a physics-based leech mechanosensor model to examine the impact of environmental and …
