Under Sundanese Eyes; Raden Ajoe Abdoerachman’S Journey To Europe, Atep Kurnia
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This article examines the travel account written by Raden Ajoe Abdoerachman, the wife of a senior native official, the Regent of Meester Cornelis (Jatinegara), Raden Aria Abdoerachman, who, with his family, was sent at the expense of the colonial government to the Netherlands to study agricultural practices in 1928. The account shows the colonial subject’s admiration for and mimicry of European behaviour and practices, but occasional ironic comments show her ambivalence towards some institutions in the Netherlands while at the same time she also criticises unfair representations of Indonesia.

Division of Cardiology Faculty Papers
Background: Studies have demonstrated poor prognosis in cancer patients who undergo percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for coronary artery disease (CAD). Cancer patients receiving PCI are at increased risk of in-stent thrombosis, bleeding, hospital readmissions, and cardiovascular and noncardiovascular mortality when compared to patients without cancer. It is unclear if the poor outcomes in cancer patients are related to the stent type utilized for PCI. This meta-analysis attempts to identify differences in efficacy and safety outcomes when comparing drug-eluting stents (DESs) with bare metal stents (BMSs) in cancer patients.
Methods: This meta-analysis is reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for …
Molecular Insights Of Paraoxonase 2 In Advanced Glycation End Product Induced Endothelial Dysfunction, Ramya R
Theses and Dissertations
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder associated with various vascular complications and affects the function of the endothelial cells. Elevated blood glucose levels accelerate the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) by Amadori rearrangement and bind to their Receptor for the advanced glycation end product (RAGE) and evoke release of key pro-inflammatory cytokine proteins leading to endothelial dysfunction. Paraoxonase 2 (PON2) is an endogenous intracellular enzyme, localised in mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum (ER), and nuclear membrane with numerous properties, like anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic and anti-oxidant.
Our present study aims to ascertain the effect of AGEs on PON2 activity and expression, …

A Sublethal Concentration Of Chlorine Induces Antibiotic Resistance In Salmonella Via Production Of Reactive Oxygen Species, Mohammed Aljuwayd, Israa Abdullah Malli, Steven C. Ricke, Young Min Kwon
Poultry Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Studies have shown that the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is triggered by bactericidal antibiotics, which contributes significantly to the killing of bacterial cells and increasing mutations in surviving cells. In this study, we hypothesized that exposure of Salmonella to sublethal concentrations of hypochlorite (NaOCl), a commonly used sanitizer in household and food industries increases mutation rates, leading to the development of antibiotic resistance. We found that a sublethal concentration (20 ppm) of NaOCl increased the mutation rates of S. typhimurium 14028s significantly (p < 0.05), which was prevented by the ROS scavenger thiourea, supporting that the increased mutation was due to NaOCl-triggered ROS production. We further found that the exposure of S. typhimurium 14028s to the same sublethal concentration of NaOCl increases resistance to kanamycin among the 3 antibiotics evaluated. The results of this study suggest that when NaOCl applied as a sanitizer fails to kill Salmonella due to diluted local concentrations or presence of organic materials, it can cause an adverse outcome of developing antibiotic resistance of the pathogen.

The Colonial Encounter Told Twice; Parallel Accounts Of Carl Bock’S 1879 Expedition To Borneo, Mikko Toivanen
The Colonial Encounter Told Twice; Parallel Accounts Of Carl Bock’S 1879 Expedition To Borneo, Mikko Toivanen
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
When the Scandinavian explorer Carl Bock, commissioned by the Dutch colonial authorities, undertook to make an expedition overland through Borneo in 1879, the island retained a sense of the exotic in the European imagination. Audiences were especially hungry for tales of the island’s headhunting Dayak inhabitants, a demand that Bock was happy to meet. In fact, he wrote two distinct narratives of the expedition: the Dutch-language report he had been tasked to write for the Dutch but also a longer, more entertainment-focused English-language travelogue for a broader audience. Comparing the two accounts, clearly based on the same underlying text but …

Setting Sails To Sundry Shores; Transnational Memories Of The Netherlands East Indies In The Eyes Of Danish Writer Aage Krarup Nielsen, Arnoud Arps
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The Danish travel writer Aage Krarup Nielsen (1891-1972) journeyed to the Netherlands East Indies on multiple occasions. Even though his translated work was popular in the Netherlands and beyond, so far it has been paid scant attention in the fields of travel-writing studies and the study of Netherlands Indies literature. Yet, it is valuable in its views on transnational power dynamics within the Netherlands East Indies society. This article examines two distinct patterns in Krarup Nielsen’s 1928 travelogue, Mellem kannibaler og paradisfugle (Between cannibals and birds of paradise): the comparisons he makes between the different ethnicities and nationalities …

Decorin Suppresses Tumor Lymphangiogenesis: A Mechanism To Curtail Cancer Progression, Dipon K. Mondal, Christopher Xie, Gabriel J. Pascal, Simone Buraschi, Renato V. Iozzo
Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers
The complex interplay between malignant cells and the cellular and molecular components of the tumor stroma is a key aspect of cancer growth and development. These tumor-host interactions are often affected by soluble bioactive molecules such as proteoglycans. Decorin, an archetypical small leucine-rich proteoglycan primarily expressed by stromal cells, affects cancer growth in its soluble form by interacting with several receptor tyrosine kinases (RTK). Overall, decorin leads to a context-dependent and protracted cessation of oncogenic RTK activity by attenuating their ability to drive a prosurvival program and to sustain a proangiogenic network. Through an unbiased transcriptomic analysis using deep RNAseq, …

Encoding Colour: Capturing Rule-Based Logic In Design Studio, Zafira Rahmatul Ummah, Paramita Atmodiwirjo
ARSNET
This paper argues that introducing algorithmic thinking to basic design pedagogy should give prominence to the basic logic and attitudes rather than learning the computational devices and tools. This paper examines the integration of computation or algorithmic thinking into a basic design studio in architectural education at Universitas Indonesia. The integration is conducted through a colour composing exercise that comprises four major stages: identifying patterns, rulemaking, colouring-composing, and reflection. The findings from this study demonstrate how the students are utilising algorithmic thinking as the primary reason to design their colour composition in different ways and complexity. Furthermore, the students can …
Visualising Daylight For Designing Optimum Openings In Tropical Context, Dany Perwita Sari
Visualising Daylight For Designing Optimum Openings In Tropical Context, Dany Perwita Sari
ARSNET
With the rising concern for global warming, reducing electricity consumption and promoting daylight utilisation for healthier living conditions are among residential buildings' top priorities. The utilisation of natural light for indoor lighting, particularly in tropical countries like Indonesia, provides health benefits and improves psychological well-being. However, the current condition shows that artificial lighting still accounts for the majority of energy consumption in residential buildings and, arguably, the failure to maximise daylighting was largely due to a limited understanding of the design of openings. This paper aims to exemplify how virtualisation can assist designers through simulation tools to better predict and …

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
The global climate crisis represents the most urgent problem facing the planet, impacting social, cultural, political, economic, and environmental dimensions of life. Alarmingly, it has impacted communities of color in disproportionate ways (Goddell, 2023; Pellow, 2013). The climate crisis, along with the intertwined context of racism, places a profound responsibility on social justice teacher educators to prioritize addressing these issues in teacher preparation. The intent of the following two case studies is to explore the impact of a project based teacher preparation program focused on cultural and environmental justice on the pedagogical knowledge and practice of teaching interns at the …

The agr quorum-sensing system links Staphylococcus aureus metabolism to virulence, in part by increasing bacterial survival during exposure to lethal concentrations of H2O2, a crucial host defense against S. aureus. We now report that protection by agr surprisingly extends beyond post-exponential growth to the exit from stationary phase when the agr system is no longer turned on. Thus, agr can be considered a constitutive protective factor. Deletion of agr resulted in decreased ATP levels and growth, despite increased rates of respiration or fermentation at appropriate oxygen tensions, suggesting that Δagr cells undergo a shift towards a hyperactive metabolic …
