Closet Space, Savannah Hope L. Andries May 2024

Closet Space, Savannah Hope L. Andries

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Closet Space is an exhibition investigating what makes a home. Through the creation of six drawings and seven prints, I investigate the relationship between isolation and companionship. This body of work explores the concept that a home is not simply a physical structure made up of walls and doors. Instead, it is about the emotional connections we create with places and people. Through fragmented memories, imagined environments, and a desire to connect with others, I address that the true meaning of home lies in our emotional attachments to inhabited spaces and the people we share them with. Being queer in …

The goal of this thesis is to provide teachers resources to prepare students for college-level music theory by using the keyboard. By providing visualization of patterns, the keyboard provides a superior tool to create a smooth transition between pre-college and college-level music theory instruction. In search of easing the passage between these levels, I interviewed numerous piano teachers who provided suggestions on how they include the keyboard to teach theory. After the interviews, I compared piano lesson theory books and college theory textbooks to compare their approaches. To assist with any gaps found in the theory books, I provide some …

Complement Regulation In The Eye: Implications For Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Georgia A. Wilke, Rajendra S. Apte May 2024

Complement Regulation In The Eye: Implications For Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Georgia A. Wilke, Rajendra S. Apte

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Careful regulation of the complement system is critical for enabling complement proteins to titrate immune defense while also preventing collateral tissue damage from poorly controlled inflammation. In the eye, this balance between complement activity and inhibition is crucial, as a low level of basal complement activity is necessary to support ocular immune privilege, a prerequisite for maintaining vision. Dysregulated complement activation contributes to parainflammation, a low level of inflammation triggered by cellular damage that functions to reestablish homeostasis, or outright inflammation that disrupts the visual axis. Complement dysregulation has been implicated in many ocular diseases, including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and …

Heterogenous Impacts Of Pathogenic Avian Diseases On Global Poultry Production, Elsbeth Hamilton May 2024

Heterogenous Impacts Of Pathogenic Avian Diseases On Global Poultry Production, Elsbeth Hamilton

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Globally, poultry is one of the most versatile and cost-effective sources of animal-based protein. Due to its wide variety of uses and variability of growing styles, poultry production is applicable in nearly every country. With the increase of scale and concentration of production, pathogenic diseases have decreased the efficiency of production through worsened feed conversion, morbidity, and mortality. In addition to physiological health, climate largely impacts the suitable conditions for growing. With more extreme climate events, locations once ideal for poultry are less efficient due to increased resource cost. This analysis seeks to determine the heterogeneity of production and the …

King Rails (Rallus elegans) are a secretive marsh bird species of conservation concern in Arkansas. Freddie Black Choctaw West WMA in southeast Arkansas has multiple confirmed pairs of breeding King Rails and offered an opportunity to investigate King Rail migration ecology, as well as nesting ecology and nest site selection. In Chapter 1, we determined migratory status (resident vs. migratory) and described seasonal movement. To do this, we captured and outfitted 23 birds with Argos GPS tags to track migration patterns throughout the season. We found that most of the population did not make long distance migrations but instead were …

Guaraní Sexuality And Contestations Over The Old Way Of Being, Robert Miles Berry May 2024

Guaraní Sexuality And Contestations Over The Old Way Of Being, Robert Miles Berry

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Jesuits in seventeenth century Guairá attempted to shift the sin of adultery and polygyny away from Guaraní men, and onto Guaraní women in their process of evangelization in Paraguay. The Jesuits did so because Guaraní men, as influential patriarchs within the missions, would revolt against the Jesuits or flee the Jesuit missions in response to Jesuit indoctrination that denounced the practice of polygyny. This is evident through two works of the Jesuit Antonio Ruiz de Montoya: one lexical, the Tesoro, and the other narrative, the Conquista. Montoya was directly involved in the founding and maintenance of the Guaraní missions, …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) remains a significant public health threat globally. New interventions to treat CDI rely on an understanding of the evolution and epidemiology of circulating strains. Here we provide longitudinal genomic data on strain diversity, transmission dynamics and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of C. difficile ribotypes (RTs) 014/020 (n=169), 002 (n=77) and 056 (n=36), the three most prominent C. difficile strains causing CDI in Australia. Genome scrutiny showed that AMR was uncommon in these lineages, with resistance-conferring alleles present in only 15/169 RT014/020 strains (8.9 %), 1/36 RT056 strains (2.78 %) and none of 77 RT002 strains. Notably, ~90 …

Engineering Small-Molecule And Protein Drugs For Targeting Bone Tumors, Yixian Wang, Chenhang Wang, Meng Xia, Zeru Tian, Joseph Zhou, Julian Meyer Berger, Xiang H-F Zhang, Han Xiao

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Bone cancer is common and severe. Both primary (e.g., osteosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma) and secondary (e.g., metastatic) bone cancers lead to significant health problems and death. Currently, treatments such as chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and radiation therapy are used to treat bone cancer, but they often only shrink or slow tumor growth and do not eliminate cancer completely. The bone microenvironment contributes unique signals that influence cancer growth, immunogenicity, and metastasis. Traditional cancer therapies have limited effectiveness due to off-target effects and poor distribution on bones. As a result, therapies with improved specificity and efficacy for treating bone tumors are highly needed. …

Astrocytes As A Mechanism For Contextually-Guided Network Dynamics And Function, Lulu Gong, Fabio Pasqualetti, Thomas Papouin, Shinung Ching May 2024

Astrocytes As A Mechanism For Contextually-Guided Network Dynamics And Function, Lulu Gong, Fabio Pasqualetti, Thomas Papouin, Shinung Ching

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Astrocytes are a ubiquitous and enigmatic type of non-neuronal cell and are found in the brain of all vertebrates. While traditionally viewed as being supportive of neurons, it is increasingly recognized that astrocytes play a more direct and active role in brain function and neural computation. On account of their sensitivity to a host of physiological covariates and ability to modulate neuronal activity and connectivity on slower time scales, astrocytes may be particularly well poised to modulate the dynamics of neural circuits in functionally salient ways. In the current paper, we seek to capture these features via actionable abstractions within …

Recipes For Resistance: Examining The Reproduction Of Indigeneity Through Foodways At The Seneca Boston-Florence Higginbotham House, Nantucket, Ma, Caitriona Mackenzie Parker

Graduate Masters Theses

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Indigenous peoples on Nantucket defied settler-colonial narratives of erasure. Native Americans negotiated the dynamics of racism by increasingly interacting with a rapidly developing free-Black population on the island. In the mid-18th century, a predominately Black racialized community established itself, in which many Native Americans, particularly Native women, began to reside. Among these Native women was Thankful Micah, a fifth-generation Wampanoag who married Seneca Boston, an African American man. Archaeological excavations at the Seneca Boston-Florence Higginbotham House have revealed evidence of Indigenous cultural material; however, Indigenous identity at the site and in the community has …

The Study Of Dmrt1 In Zebrafish And How It Impacts Sex Determination, Raymond Michael Poirier May 2024

The Study Of Dmrt1 In Zebrafish And How It Impacts Sex Determination, Raymond Michael Poirier

Graduate Masters Theses

The dmrt1 gene is common amongst most animals and functions to determine or maintain male sex during development. Similarly, in zebrafish dmrt1 is important for male sex determination and maintaining proper testis morphology. This gene is expressed in two different cell types of the testis in zebrafish, germ cells and Sertoli cells. While we know where this gene is expressed and what its role is, it is not known if it is sufficient to drive male fate. If so, then in which cells is it sufficient to drive male fate in the testis? I aimed to answer this question by …

Piezo1 regulates multiple aspects of the vascular system by converting mechanical signals generated by fluid flow into biological processes. Here, we find that Piezo1 is necessary for the proper development and function of meningeal lymphatic vessels and that activating Piezo1 through transgenic overexpression or treatment with the chemical agonist Yoda1 is sufficient to increase cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) outflow by improving lymphatic absorption and transport. The abnormal accumulation of CSF, which often leads to hydrocephalus and ventriculomegaly, currently lacks effective treatments. We discovered that meningeal lymphatics in mouse models of Down syndrome were incompletely developed and abnormally formed. Selective overexpression of …

Genotoxic agents such as doxorubicin (DXR) can cause damage to the intestines that can be ameliorated by fasting. How fasting is protective and the optimal timing of fasting and refeeding remain unclear. Here, our analysis of fasting/refeeding-induced global intestinal transcriptional changes revealed metabolic shifts and implicated the cellular energetic hub mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) in protecting from DXR-induced DNA damage. Our analysis of specific transcripts and proteins in intestinal tissue and tissue extracts showed that fasting followed by refeeding at the time of DXR administration reduced damage and caused a spike in mTORC1 activity. However, continued fasting …

From Stone To Silicone: Interdisciplinary Insights Into The Co-Evolution Of Humans, Tools And Technologies, Mahnoor Zahid '24

Honor Scholar Theses

Excerpt: "The following thesis then explores how we as a species evolved in accordance to our tool technology. My initial hypothesis was that humans evolved because our tool technology made us smarter: the more we engaged with our tools, the more our brains found different ways to challenge themselves. This hypothesis stemmed from the initial observation I, as a modern human, have made: the more enriched our environment is as a human, the more our brains are able to grow. As children we are taught that exercise, books, and problem solving activities help the successful development and maturation of our …

A New Approach To Patent Reform, Janet Freilich, Michael J. Meurer, Mark Schankerman, Florian Schuett

Faculty Scholarship

Scholars and policy makers have tried for years to solve the tenacious and harmful crisis of low quality, erroneously granted patents. Far from resolving the problem, these determined efforts have resulted in hundreds of conflicting policy proposals, failed Congressional bills, and no way to evaluate the policies’ value or impact or to decide between the overwhelming multiplicity of policies.

This Article provides not only new solutions, but a new approach for designing and assessing policies both in patent law and legal systems more generally. We introduce a formal economic model of the patent system that differs from existing scholarship because …

Government Misinformation Platforms, Janet Freilich

Faculty Scholarship

There is a harmful mismatch between how information published by the government is perceived-as highly trustworthy-and the reality that it is often not. This Article shows that the government frequently collects information from third party private entities and publishes it with no review or vetting. Although this information is riddled with errors and inaccuracies, scholars, policymakers, and the public treat the information with unwarranted confidence because it derives from the government. Further, institutional imprimatur (and consequent trust) attaches to information even tangentially associated with the government and to information where the government explicitly disclaims review.

This Article highlights the ubiquity …
