Effect Of Metaphylaxis In High-Risk Stocker Heifers On The Nasopharyngeal Microbiome, Resistome, And Antimicrobial Resistance Of Mannheimia Haemolytica, William Byrn Crosby
Effect Of Metaphylaxis In High-Risk Stocker Heifers On The Nasopharyngeal Microbiome, Resistome, And Antimicrobial Resistance Of Mannheimia Haemolytica, William Byrn Crosby
Theses and Dissertations
Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is the leading cause of morbidity in feeder and stocker cattle, resulting in large impacts on economics of stocker and feedlot operations. One of the most effective means of controlling BRD is the mass administration of antimicrobials (AM) at arrival or “metaphylaxis”, potentially leading to increased antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Mannheimia haemolytica (MH), the most commonly isolated bacterial pathogen in BRD cases in feedlot cattle, has been shown to have integrative-conjugative elements (ICE), which are mobile genetic elements that have the ability to integrate themselves in the host genome. Notably, these ICE have been shown to contain …

Synthesis And Degradation Of Biobased Polymers From Plant Oils Incorporated With Cellulose Nanocrystals., Katherine Elmore
Theses and Dissertations
Synthetic plastics are intrinsic to modern human existence. Unfortunately, many challenges exist related to the accumulation of plastic waste, including greenhouse gas emissions, contamination of natural environments, and entrance into the food chain through microplastics. Therefore, new polymers are being developed that both compete with the capabilities and costs of petroleum-based plastics and have assured biodegradability. Through decades of research, plant oils have emerged as one of the leading options for alternative starting materials because of their feasibility for use in polymerization reactions, wide availability, renewability, and cost-effectiveness. In this work, cottonseed oil (CSO) and soybean oil (SBO) are successfully …
Evaluation And Enhancement Of The Phosphorus Index For The Mississippi Delta, Felipe Fernandez Martinez
Evaluation And Enhancement Of The Phosphorus Index For The Mississippi Delta, Felipe Fernandez Martinez
Theses and Dissertations
The Lower Mississippi Alluvial Basin (LMAB) faces significant environmental challenges due to phosphorus (P) runoff from agricultural lands, contributing to eutrophication and aquatic ecosystem degradation. Excess nutrient runoff, particularly P, threatens water quality and contributes to hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico. The current Mississippi Phosphorus Index (P-Index), a tool for assessing P loss vulnerability from agricultural fields, has shown limitations in its applicability across the diverse conditions of the Mississippi Delta, a sub-region of the LMAB. This research presents a comprehensive revision of the P-Index by employing a suite of analytical techniques and diverse data sources, including geospatial analysis, …

Theses and Dissertations
Flour has been identified as the source of Salmonella related recalls and outbreaks in past years. Flour is not usually heat treated and can cause issues when eaten raw, such as in the consumption of cookie dough and batters. Alternative flours like almond flour have been used in some bakery products. Alternative cooking techniques like air frying have increased as well due to their ease of use. The objective of this research was to study the effectiveness of air fryer technology on the inactivation of Salmonella in brownies formulated with all-purpose and almond flour. The aw and pH decreased significantly …
Evaluating The Bull Breeding Soundness Evaluation’S Utility As A Tool For Preventing Reproductive Inefficiency, Todd Galen Gunderson
Evaluating The Bull Breeding Soundness Evaluation’S Utility As A Tool For Preventing Reproductive Inefficiency, Todd Galen Gunderson
Theses and Dissertations
One of the most impactful challenges beef cow-calf producers face is the need to optimize reproductive efficiency. The ability of a veterinarian to identify potential sources of reproductive inefficiency is a valuable service they can offer. The breeding soundness evaluation (BSE) is one tool veterinarians use to identify subfertile bulls prior to use. This body of research shows that producers who have a defined breeding season have higher odds of hiring a veterinarian to perform BSEs, and that as breeding season length decreases, the probability of a management strategy that uses BSEs being profitable increases. Furthermore, not all veterinarians use …

Assessing Northern Bobwhite Habitat Use And Short-Term Response To Prescribed Fire In An Intensively Managed Longleaf Pine Ecosystem, Jeffrey Martin Grayum
Theses and Dissertations
Effective conservation requires reliable knowledge of habitat selection and data describing the target species’ response to prominent management techniques. Herein, I describe northern bobwhite breeding season resource selection in an intensively managed longleaf pine ecosystem and investigate the influence of post-fire succession and days-since-fire on bobwhite use of recently burned areas. I recorded bobwhite locations three times per week and surveyed recently burned areas twice daily. I found that bobwhite prefer natural pine woodlands burned the current year and pine plantations, hardwood pine forest, and shrub/scrub communities burned 1-2 years ago. Bobwhite avoided natural pine woodlands burned 1-2 years ago, …
Evaluating The Effects Of Poultry Litter Amendments On Escherichia Coli Populations, Virulence Genes, And Antimicrobial-Resistance Genes In Poultry Litter During A Live Grow-Out., Faith Henson
Theses and Dissertations
Poultry litter can harbor pathogenic bacteria, including avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC). Applying litter amendments is one strategy to improve bird health and potentially reduce pathogens. Biochar and PLT were applied as litter amendments in a live bird trial to study their effects on E. coli populations, APEC virulence genes (VAG), and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes. Samples were collected at days 0, 17, 29, and 41 to enumerate E. coli and store bacterial isolates for antimicrobial-resistance gene analysis. Data analysis showed litter amendments did not significantly affect overall E. coli populations. Grow-out time impacted E. coli populations, with reductions occurring …

Evaluating The Vertical Transmission Potential Of Salmonella Reading In Broiler Breeders, Abubakar Shitu Isah
Theses and Dissertations
Salmonellosis, a significant foodborne illness in humans, is caused by Salmonella, with poultry and poultry products acting as significant reservoirs and sources of human infection. Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serotype Reading has recently emerged as a notable foodborne pathogen responsible for extensive multistate human outbreaks in North America. This study focused on evaluating the capacity of the emerged serotype to colonize broiler breeder reproductive tissues and potentially contaminate eggs, indicating the potential for vertical transmission. For this investigation, two Salmonella Reading strains were utilized, one associated with outbreaks and another non-outbreak strain. Both strains were initially modified with bioluminescent marker …
Identifying Potential Antibiotic Uptake Mechanisms Of Streptococcus Pneumoniae, Yuri Laguna Terai
Identifying Potential Antibiotic Uptake Mechanisms Of Streptococcus Pneumoniae, Yuri Laguna Terai
Theses and Dissertations
Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) is a commensal gram-positive colonizer of the human nasopharynx capable of causing diseases including otitis media, pneumonia, bacteremia, and meningitis. Although it is often a harmless colonizer, there is a high rate of mortality and morbidity among the immunocompromised, elderly, and young children. While these infections can often be treated with antibiotics, resistance to numerous antibiotics is increasing. Antibiotic resistance is a well-studied dilemma; however, little information is known of how bacteria take up certain antibiotics. Because most antibiotics cannot diffuse freely across the bacterial cell wall, we hypothesize that metabolite transport proteins participate in the uptake …

Determine The Composition Of Spoilage Bacteria And Their Dynamic Changes In Fresh Broiler Breast Meat During Refrigerated Storage, Dylan Joseph Lesak
Theses and Dissertations
Traditional plating methods for bacterial enumeration can be limited, but the development of high-throughput DNA sequencing, such as Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT), can provide rapid and highly specific alternative for species-level identification. In this study, ONT amplicon sequencing was applied to fresh broiler breast meat to identify their bacterial composition and monitor their dynamic changes. The sequencing data were complemented by sensory panels, physicochemical analysis, and traditional plating methods. Over time, the bacterial diversity decreased within and across samples. By the end of shelf-life, Pseudomonas fragi, Pseudomonas lundesis, and Brochothrix thermosphacta became the most prevalent species. These bacteria were associated …

Theses and Dissertations
Food insecurity, poor diet quality, and periodontal disease are critical problems in the United States, yet limited studies examine how these three conditions are related. Men and the Hispanic population suffer a disproportionate burden of periodontal disease and are understudied groups. Using NHANES data from 2015 to 2018 and the HEI-2015, this study describes the prevalence of men’s periodontitis and its association with food insecurity and diet quality. The final sample was 4,582 men, aged 30 years or older, of whom 1,130 were Hispanic. Odds ratios were calculated via multivariable logistic regression models. Very low food security significantly increased the …
Investigating The Pretesting Effect Under Cognitive Load Through Increased Playback Speed, Oscar Ramirez Perez
Investigating The Pretesting Effect Under Cognitive Load Through Increased Playback Speed, Oscar Ramirez Perez
Theses and Dissertations
Pretesting prior to a study session has been shown to benefit memory for pretested information compared to traditional study. While previous research has not found a detriment to non-pretested but related material, it is possible that taxing attention by increasing the playback speed of presented material could reveal such impairments. The current study (N = 239) compared multiple-choice learning from educational videos at 1x, 1.5x, and 2x speeds. Three videos (one at each speed) were presented after a pretest, for which half of the tested material was pretested, and half was not (non-pretested related). Another three videos were presented without …

La Deconstrucción De La Idea De Maternidad En Dos Novelas Colombianas: La Perra De Pilar Quintana Y Esta Herida Llena De Peces De Lorena Salazar Masso, Catalina Revelo
Theses and Dissertations

“Freakish Man”: Sexual Blues, Sacred Beliefs, And The Transformation Of Black Queer Identity, 1870-1957., Xavier E. Sivels
Theses and Dissertations
“‘Freakish Man’: sexual blues, sacred beliefs, and the transformation of Black queer identity, 1870-1959” investigates how queer Black men expressed their gender and sexual identities. It follows how, from the days of Reconstruction to the modern civil rights movement, queer Black men used various aspects of Black culture—particularly the blues, working-class social culture, and charismatic religion—to form identities that departed from dominant Black and white norms. The “freakish man” emerged as queer Black men cultivated legible, subversive gender and sexual identities in sacred and secular spaces of working-class Black culture that prioritized masculine heterosexuality. Though queer Black men were briefly …

Evaluating Efficacy Of Modified Barrier Operations To Limit Silver Carp Movements In The Mississippi Alluvial Valley, Joshua Stafford
Theses and Dissertations
Invasive Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) have spread throughout the Mississippi River basin and threaten native species. The Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley has numerous water-control structures. These structures could potentially be operated to limit expansions of invasive fishes. My goal was to examine the effects of two water-control structures on movements of Silver Carp within a floodplain network of waterbodies, including an oxbow lake (Eagle Lake; LA, MS). I monitored Silver Carp movements with an acoustic array and bi-monthly active tracking. No movements occurred through the structure managed to deter carp while nine carp passed through the structure that is not …
Forest Structure And Edge Effects On Bee Functional Diversity In Private, Working Pine Forests, Madalyn Stoecker
Forest Structure And Edge Effects On Bee Functional Diversity In Private, Working Pine Forests, Madalyn Stoecker
Theses and Dissertations
Private, working forests provide unique opportunities for biodiversity research and management. Even-aged management often creates a heterogeneous mosaic of forest stands in southeastern loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) landscapes, with stands containing structural and compositional characteristics that support different bee functional groups. Interspersion of different structural conditions, combined with roads separating adjacent stands, leads to prevalence of edges across much of the landscape, which may have varying effects on bee species. I evaluated how landscape heterogeneity and presence of edge influences functional diversity in wild bee (Hymenoptera: Apoidea: Anthophila) communities during the summers of 2022 and 2023. Open conditions within early …
Ultrasonographic Evaluation Of Splenic Nodules And Masses With B-Flow Interrogation Correlates To Cytologic Or Histopathologic Characterization As Benign Or Malignant., William Spigener Stevenson
Ultrasonographic Evaluation Of Splenic Nodules And Masses With B-Flow Interrogation Correlates To Cytologic Or Histopathologic Characterization As Benign Or Malignant., William Spigener Stevenson
Theses and Dissertations
The use of brightness mode (B-mode) ultrasound (US), color Doppler (CD), and power Doppler (PD) can all help evaluate and characterize splenic lesions. A relatively new non-Doppler technology used to evaluate vasculature called B-Flow helps overcome certain limitations of CD and PD that affect visualization of blood flow. There are no studies describing the use of B-Flow characterizing splenic lesions in dogs. A total of 97 splenic lesions were evaluated. Splenic lesions that were larger than 2 cm, distorted the splenic capsule, or accompanied free fluid were significantly associated with malignancy. Lesions with tortuous internal vessels on CD or B-Flow …

Biofilms have the potential to form on various abiotic surfaces and have been found to be more resistant to environmental stressors. Therefore, there is a need to investigate the biofilm forming ability and characteristics of Salmonella strains isolated from poultry meat. These studies characterized the biofilm forming capabilities of 5 Salmonella strains on abiotic surfaces, and investigated changes in gene expression that are associated with Salmonella biofilm formation in 3 Salmonella strains. Salmonella biofilms were cultivated on stainless steel, concrete, rubber, and polyethylene under static and shear stress conditions. Biofilm matrix density was determined using a modified crystal violet assay, …
Southern Pine Beetle Colonization: Dispersal Phenology And Host Selection, John William Thomason
Southern Pine Beetle Colonization: Dispersal Phenology And Host Selection, John William Thomason
Theses and Dissertations
The southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is a prime example of a bark beetle of high ecological and economical importance. As these bark beetles adapt to a changing environment, forest managers must continue to evolve management strategies to improve forest resilience to these pests. Herein, we examined the validity of phenological trap timing cues for the annual spring D. frontalis risk assessment survey and found the traditional use of flowering dogwood (Cornus florida) (Cornaceae) bloom occurred an average of 3 weeks after peak D. frontalis spring flight activity. We also examined the natal host influence on adult …

A Day In The Life Of A Farm-Fluencer: Can Agriculturalists Change Public Perceptions Towards Agriculture By Using Social Media, Josey M. Webb
Theses and Dissertations
As generations have moved away from the farm, the population has become less aware of the practices behind the agriculture industry. However, people are becoming interested in how their food is produced. Since most of the population has not received an agriculture education, they look towards social media as their source of information. Social media has become a platform for sharing opinions and knowledge on certain topics. It has also been studied the perceptions of others can be influenced by emotionalizing and repeating stories related to the topic. Farmers and ranchers are now sharing their knowledge and experiences regarding agriculture …

Effects Of Moderate Exercise Regimen On Reproductive Development Of Replacement Beef Heifers Reared In Drylots At A High Stocking Density, Logan M. Whipple
Theses and Dissertations
Raising beef females in drylots is gaining popularity because a more intensive management style facilitates adequate feeding for growth. However, drylots increase stocking density which has previously been shown to be stressful and impair reproductive development, whereas exercise has been shown to alleviate stress. Therefore, the objective was to determine if providing access to an exercise area would improve reproductive development of replacement beef heifers reared in drylots. Body weight, pedometer readings, and blood samples for plasma cortisol were collected weekly. Additional blood samples for genes associated with welfare, hair cortisol samples, and heifer temperament was assessed periodically throughout the …
