The Need For A Chainsaw Safety Training Program For Female Forest Landowners, Patrick Hiesl, Janet Steele, Susan T. Guynn May 2024

The Need For A Chainsaw Safety Training Program For Female Forest Landowners, Patrick Hiesl, Janet Steele, Susan T. Guynn

Journal of Extension

Female forest landowners (FFLO) are increasing in numbers but have been marginalized in technical training programs in the past. We conducted chainsaw safety training programs geared towards FFLO and compared program evaluation results with results from male-dominated chainsaw training workshops. FFLO are limited in their technical knowledge at the beginning of a workshop, are more likely to own different types of chainsaws than male participants, and generally liked having a women-only workshop. The takeaway is that FFLO strive in a women-only environment and that more women-focused extension training programs are needed to provide with a safe and inclusive learning environment.

Using Multimedia To Help Agricultural Producers Communicate With Consumers About Gmos, Stacey F. Stearns, Jennifer E. Cushman, Joseph A. Bonelli, Bonnie E. Burr

Journal of Extension

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and their uses are often misunderstood. Consumers are regularly unsure what GMOs are, or if they are safe for consumption and the environment. Contradictory and sometimes inaccurate information is available from numerous sources, and challenges consumers and others to separate the facts from sensationalized stories. Agricultural producers often communicate with consumers, neighbors, and members of the general public; however, they do not have information to share about GMOs. Multimedia resources can provide agricultural producers with science-based information to share with consumers. Agricultural communicators and Extension educators can create science-based multimedia resources to bridge the communication gap.

Unraveling The Paradox Of The 'Great Speciators': Evolutionary Dynamics Of A Geographic Radiation Of Island Kingfishers (Todiramphus), Jenna Merle Mccullough

Biology ETDs

The paradox of the ‘Great Speciators’ describes a biogeographic pattern in which geographically widespread lineages have strong overwater dispersal capabilities, yet exhibit genetic and phenotypic divergence between islands, suggesting limited dispersal and cessation of gene flow. In my dissertation, I leveraged whole genomes and two comprehensive trait datasets of dispersal ability and plumage coloration of all described diversity within Todiramphus kingfishers, a rapid radiation of largely island endemic ‘Great Speciators.’ Chapter 1 reveals that whole genome datasets do not outright solve the evolutionary relationships of this clade and that widespread incomplete lineage sorting (ILS) and gene flow are sources of …

The embryo is considered an individual with relational qualities worthy of all the rights given all humans per the natural law.

The Church continues to oppose all forms of assisted reproduction that eliminates the unitive and procreative nature of marriage as it violates the dignity of the child and marriage. Technologies such as lower tubal ovum transfer(LTOT), …

The Contributions Of Philosophical Anthropology To Healthcare Ethics, Bura Koroba May 2024

The Contributions Of Philosophical Anthropology To Healthcare Ethics, Bura Koroba

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The first principles of bioethics, autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice have contributed immensely to healthcare ethics. The procedural approach streamlines the decision-making process, protects vulnerable subjects, and fosters stability and trust in the patient-caregiver relationship. Yet, the principles are demonstrably insufficient, riddled with limitations and loopholes that could stand in the way of care.[i] Several recommendations have been proffered to remedy the deficiencies. Value ethics, for instance, has been touted as a proficient addendum to the foundations established by the principles. Still, these have not sufficiently addressed all arising issues in bioethics. Besides the challenges encountered in decision-making, opposing …

Are Impacts Of The Invasive Alien Plant Crassula Helmsii Mediated By Detritus? A Litter Experiment In A Temperate Pond, Samuel J.L. Tasker, Andrew Foggo, David T. Bilton

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Because of the high growth rates often achieved by invasive alien macrophytes, their establishment in recipient ecosystems may alter the abundance and composition of litter entering detrital pathways, representing a significant—but often overlooked—ecological effect of these invasions. Crassula helmsii (Kirk) Cockayne (New Zealand pygmyweed) is an invasive alien macrophyte, notorious for its profuse growth in invaded waterbodies. C. helmsii is perennial and often forms dense stands, producing abundant detritus. To investigate whether some of C. helmsii’s impacts are mediated by this detritus, we conducted an 85-day litterbag experiment comparing decomposition of C. helmsii with that of Callitriche stagnalis Scop. (water-starwort), …
