Redesigning Secure School Entry Thresholds To Create Inclusive And Welcoming Environments, Alex Yarovaya

University Honors Theses

Schools are known to have been one of the largest assets to communities, providing folks with integral resources and accessible spaces that can foster a variety of activities. Over the last decade, however, our perspective of schools has undergone significant changes. Schools have eagerly been undergoing the process of "hardening" by implementing safety and violence prevention tactics with Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) as a response to the staggering increase of gun violence incidents and safety & security issues today. Schools have been scrambling to accommodate this change in reality by retrofitting with security systems, implementing high security measures …

Functionalized Gold Nanoparticles And Halogen Bonding Interactions Involving Fentanyl And Fentanyl Derivatives, Molly M. Sherard, Jamie S. Kaplan, Jeffrey H. Simpson, Kevin W. Kittredge, Michael C. Leopold

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Fentanyl (FTN) and synthetic analogs of FTN continue to ravage populations across the globe, including in the United States where opioids are increasingly being used and abused and are causing a staggering and growing number of overdose deaths each year. This growing pandemic is worsened by the ease with which FTN can be derivatized into numerous derivatives. Understanding the chemical properties/behaviors of the FTN class of compounds is critical for developing effective chemical detection schemes using nanoparticles (NPs) to optimize important chemical interactions. Halogen bonding (XB) is an intermolecular interaction between a polarized halogen atom on a molecule and e−-rich …

Beyond Vertigo: Vestibular, Aural, And Perceptual Symptoms In Vestibular Migraine, Claire E.J. Ceriani

Department of Jefferson Headache Center Papers and Presentations

PURPOSE: To review the vestibular, aural, and perceptual symptoms of vestibular migraine (VM) that may present alongside vertigo.

RECENT FINDINGS: Increased research attention to the wide spectrum of symptoms presenting in VM patients has improved understanding of this disorder, with recent identification of five different VM phenotypes. Research into the clinical overlap between VM and other chronic vestibular syndromes such as persistent postural-perceptual dizziness and mal-de-debarquement syndrome reveals a range of vestibular symptoms and hints at pathophysiological connections between migraine and vestibular dysfunction. Studies of migraine treatment for hearing loss suggest patients presenting with aural symptoms may have an underlying …

French, Erlend Kirkeng Jørgensen, Shira Yoshi Maezumi, Steinar Solheim, Jennifer Bates, Benjamin Davies, Yongje Oh, Xiaolin Ren

Department of Anthropology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The record of past human adaptations provides crucial lessons for guiding responses to crises in the future1–3. To date, there have been no systematic global comparisons of humans’ ability to absorb and recover from disturbances through time4,5. Here we synthesized resilience across a broad sample of prehistoric population time–frequency data, spanning 30,000 years of human history. Cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses of population decline show that frequent disturbances enhance a population’s capacity to resist and recover from later downturns. Land-use patterns are important mediators of the strength of this positive association: farming and herding societies are more …

On Appeal from the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia No. 1:14-cv-01996-BAH, Hon. Beryl A. Howell

From the Introduction and Summary of Argument

This appeal seeks to re-litigate a question that the Russian Federation had already lost with finality in the courts of the seat of arbitration (the Netherlands): namely, whether the Russian Federation ever agreed to arbitrate in the first place. Those arguments are identical to arguments the Russian Federation presented to Dutch courts more than six years ago in a failed effort to set aside the awards. Because …

The goal of this study is to internally validate the ANDE 6C Rapid DNA I-Chip reagent for use on disaster victim identification (DVI) samples. The internal validation tested nine samples each of postmortem blood, tissue, and bone. This study tested the instrument’s precision, accuracy, repeatability, and reproducibility. Precision and accuracy were tested by confirming that the same sample run on the ANDE instrument and the Power Plex Fusion amplification system produced a DNA profile that is consistent with the known profile. Repeatability was tested through confirming the correct results are obtained for sample runs performed by the same operator. Reproducibility …

A Computational Investigation Of Wood Selection For Acoustic Guitar, Jonah Osterhus May 2024

A Computational Investigation Of Wood Selection For Acoustic Guitar, Jonah Osterhus

Senior Honors Theses

The acoustic guitar is a stringed instrument, often made of wood, that transduces vibrational energy of steel strings into coupled vibrations of the wood and acoustic pressure waves in the air. Variations in wood selection and instrument geometry have been shown to affect the timbre of the acoustic guitar. Computational methods were utilized to investigate the impact of material properties on acoustic performance. Sitka spruce was deemed the most suitable wood for guitar soundboards due to its acoustic characteristics, strength, and uniform aesthetic. Mahogany was deemed to be the best wood for the back and sides of the guitar body …

Efficacy Of Ferula L. Species Extracts From Tajikistan Against Influenza Viruses, Saidbeg Satorov, Sulhiy Mavlonazarova, Ahdrey P. Bogoyavlenskiy, Salomuddin D. Yusufi, Vyacheslav Dushenkov

Publications and Research

Efficacy of Ferula L. Species Extracts from Tajikistan Against Influenza Viruses One of the challenges facing both the domestic and international pharmaceutical industries is the limited selection and suboptimal efficacy of available antiviral drugs. The high mutational variability of influenza viruses contributes to rapid acquisition of drug resistance, which diminishes or nullifies the effectiveness of existing therapies, thereby necessitating the exploration for novel therapeutics. This study aimed to assess the antiviral activities of three species of the genus Ferula— indigenous to the Republic of Tajikistan—against influenza strains A/Vladivostok/2/09 (H1N1) and A/Almaty/8/98 (H3N2). The investigation revealed that phytochemical constituents—specifically, root …

“Who Do You Say That I Am?”: Literary Portrayal Of Religious Experience, William Wood May 2024

“Who Do You Say That I Am?”: Literary Portrayal Of Religious Experience, William Wood

Masters Theses

Literature is one of the primary means through which God has revealed Himself to the world. Christian writers, therefore, should be bold to portray their God in and through the religious experiences of their characters. Evaluating classic and contemporary literature, four distinct methods of portraying religious experience may be described, each with varying levels of flexibility and faithfulness. Works of literature such as fantasy fiction may include any and all of these methods, even while that literature pursues other themes. In this thesis, an Artist Statement describes the included work of fiction, with its literary context, impetus, and personal significance. …

Mi Ofrenda, Bonita Vasquez

Masters Theses

This thesis examines the role of the Dia de los Muertos holiday in wasteful spending, food waste, and environmental waste in the United States due to its food-centered traditions and commercialized competitions. As the holiday has become more mainstream, the once-homebound practices have expanded into large, drawn-out festivals nationwide. Articles on the holiday’s traditions, as well as studies on waste, have been reviewed. The analysis showed that the traditions have evolved and that food waste directly affects financial and environmental waste. This paper concludes that the holiday’s practices can be adjusted to help reduce food, financial, and environmental waste.
