The Applications Of Edna Metabarcoding As A Tool For Conservation Biology, Aidan P. Gillespie May 2024

The Applications Of Edna Metabarcoding As A Tool For Conservation Biology, Aidan P. Gillespie

SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal

Measuring ecosystem biodiversity has historically been challenging, invasive, and timeconsuming. Recent advances in molecular biology technologies and techniques over the past two decades have enabled the use of environmental DNA (eDNA) as a tool for studying biodiversity. Environmental DNA refers to the DNA from all organisms in an ecosystem that enter the environment through various pathways. Since the development of high-throughput DNA sequencing (HTS) techniques, researchers have adopted eDNA metabarcoding as a noninvasive, inexpensive, and technically simple method for describing ecosystem biodiversity. The present review will describe current eDNA metabarcoding techniques and technical considerations, and then provide a selection of …

Radical Intersections: The Lives And Works Of Claudia Jones And Lorraine Hansberry, Brigid Conroy

SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal

In the mid-twentieth century, Claudia Jones and Lorraine Hansberry engaged in a multiplicity of creative works to cultivate a powerful movement of third-world communism that prioritized the abolition of oppressive systems targeting Black working women globally. Though only briefly crossing paths, the two revolutionary figures devoted their lives to the same struggle against the US imperial state. Drawing from past intellectual giants such as Karl Marx, Marcus Garvey, and Sojourner Truth, Jones and Hansberry developed transformative radical feminist theory and laid the foundation for contemporary manifestations of feminism. Their analyses of the indissoluble relation between institutional racism and the global …

Effectiveness Of Natural Defenses Against Coastal Hazards, Savannah Hyndman May 2024

Effectiveness Of Natural Defenses Against Coastal Hazards, Savannah Hyndman

SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal

Coastal hazards, such as erosion and flooding, are a danger to people and property. The typical defense against coastal hazards has been grey infrastructure, which can lower biodiversity and erode the shoreline further by preventing natural sand replenishment. Natural defenses (e.g., habitat restoration, living shorelines) have been suggested as a means to address shoreline erosion and flooding. It is uncertain, however, if natural defenses are effective at combating coastal hazards. This review analyzes existing literature on natural defenses to assess whether they can provide an effective and ecologically sound means for coastal hazard management, with an emphasis on California coastal …

Orphans Of The Orissa Famine: Capital, Charity, And Coercion In The Missionary System, Sarah Mende May 2024

Orphans Of The Orissa Famine: Capital, Charity, And Coercion In The Missionary System, Sarah Mende

SMU Journal of Undergraduate Research

Some of the most profound effects Britain imposed on society in Orissa, India came as a result of the missions that formed the majority of the protective infrastructure during the Orissa famine. Shortly after the British began their occupation of Orissa, a network of Protestant Christian missions based in England began to move into the region. Leadership came from the Christian Missionary Society, an Evangelical Anglican group, as well as Baptist figures such as Rev. J. Buckley. Their move was difficult, and for many years unsuccessful. However, the British East India Company and the Raj that followed it would pave …

Strengthening And Supporting The Community Of First-Generation Students Of Color, Manuel Pech May 2024

Strengthening And Supporting The Community Of First-Generation Students Of Color, Manuel Pech

M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects

First-generation students of color overcome many barriers when attending college by finding institutional resources to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. However, students often feel these resources are scarce at Predominantly White Institutions (PWI). Thus, I created a coaching program focused on community building, academic strategies, and mentorship to connect students to campus resources, improve well-being, and lead to high academic achievement. Peer-to-peer coaches for first-generation students of color often find it challenging to coach students from different backgrounds and ethnicities. This is due to the power or cultural dynamics, gender differences, and fears of the unknown they might encounter when …

Buddhism In Thailand: Why Don’T The Youth Believe In Buddhism?, Nutnicha Teekatanasuk

Master's Theses

In Thailand, Buddhism is now known as a Buddhist country. Almost 96% of people in Thailand believe in Buddhism but it is declining every single day. Technology has made many people change their minds and not believe in Buddhism. Surprisingly, people who have been involved in Buddhism since they were born don’t believe, especially the young generation. The number of believers is declining every single day and many people have changed their minds and don’t believe in Buddhism. Surprisingly, people who have been involved in Buddhism since they were born don’t believe anymore. This might be because of Thai monks’ …

Multi-Scale Variability Of Heavy Metals In A Snowpack In The Triple Divide Region Of The Western United States, Kelsey Hefner May 2024

Multi-Scale Variability Of Heavy Metals In A Snowpack In The Triple Divide Region Of The Western United States, Kelsey Hefner

University Honors Theses

Natural and anthropogenically sourced particulates are deposited from the atmosphere to landscapes via dry and wet deposition, making frozen winter snowpack a natural archive of atmospheric elemental composition. In the Western United States, wildfires are increasing in extent, duration, and severity. Severe fires remove forest canopy, impacting how atmospheric elements are dispersed and stored across snow-dominated watersheds. We evaluated concentrations of twelve elements in 397 winter snow core samples from a chronosequence of eight forests that burned with mixed severity from 2000 to 2018 in the Triple Divide region of Western Wyoming, the headwaters of the Columbia, Colorado, and Missouri …

Despite widespread adoption of tissue clearing techniques in recent years, poor access to suitable light-sheet fluorescence microscopes remains a major obstacle for biomedical end-users. Here, we present descSPIM (desktopequipped SPIM for cleared specimens), a low-cost ($20,000–50,000), lowexpertise (one-day installation by a non-expert), yet practical do-it-yourself light-sheet microscope as a solution for this bottleneck. Even the most fundamental configuration of descSPIM enables multi-color imaging of whole mouse brains and a cancer cell line-derived xenograft tumor mass for the visualization of neurocircuitry, assessment of drug distribution, and pathological examination by false-colored hematoxylin and eosin staining in a threedimensional manner. Flattening The Curve: Why Amending The International Health Regulations Is The Common-Sense Solution To Future Pandemics, Brittney Graff May 2024

Flattening The Curve: Why Amending The International Health Regulations Is The Common-Sense Solution To Future Pandemics, Brittney Graff

BYU Law Review

The COVID-19 pandemic presented an unprecedented challenge for the World Health Organization (WHO) and international community. The outbreak and ongoing pandemic prompted States to reassess the efficacy of the International Health Regulations (IHR). In November 2021, the World Health Assembly (WHA) decided to develop a new agreement to increase international pandemic preparedness. This paper analyzes the current gaps in the IHR to present a pragmatic approach wherein the WHA would amend rather than replace the IHR. It starts by examining the purpose and history of the IHR, including past revisions. It then addresses the constitutional framework of the IHR, and …

Men or mice with homozygous serine/threonine kinase 33 (STK33) mutations are sterile owing to defective sperm morphology and motility. To chemically evaluate STK33 for male contraception with STK33-specific inhibitors, we screened our multibillion-compound collection of DNA-encoded chemical libraries, uncovered potent STK33-specific inhibitors, determined the STK33 kinase domain structure bound with a truncated hit CDD-2211, and generated an optimized hit CDD-2807 that demonstrates nanomolar cellular potency (half-maximal inhibitory concentration = 9.2 nanomolar) and favorable metabolic stability. In mice, CDD-2807 exhibited no toxicity, efficiently crossed the blood-testis barrier, did not accumulate in brain, and induced a reversible contraceptive effect that …

Some firms and marketers of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes; a type of electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS)) and refill liquids (e-liquids) have made claims about the safety of ingredients used in their products based on the term "GRAS or Generally Recognized As Safe" (GRAS). However, GRAS is a provision within the definition of a food additive under section 201(s) (21 U.S.C. 321(s)) of the U.S. Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act). Food additives and GRAS substances are by the FD&C Act definition intended for use in food, thus safety is based on oral consumption; the term GRAS cannot serve …

Beyond The Human: Crossovers For An Onto-Epistemological Bifurcation, Ester Toribio-Roura May 2024

Beyond The Human: Crossovers For An Onto-Epistemological Bifurcation, Ester Toribio-Roura

Articles

Building upon recent studies in new materialisms and feminist critical posthumanism with a focus on human and more-than-human relationships, this paper examines how the posthuman paradigm, by postulating the queering of identit(ies) via entanglement with the more-than-human (including technology), and by offering a critical examination of diverse modes of existence within a broader ecological context, can foster more inclusive and ethically sound ways of being in the world. Although posthumanism encompasses a wide range of perspectives and theories, including transhumanism, at its core, it challenges traditional notions of humanism, blurring the boundaries between what is human and what is more-than-human, …

Youth Work For People And Planet: Integrating Insights From Ecopedagogy Into Youth Work, Trudi Cooper, Tim Corney, Jamie Gorman May 2024

Youth Work For People And Planet: Integrating Insights From Ecopedagogy Into Youth Work, Trudi Cooper, Tim Corney, Jamie Gorman

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Youth work is not unitary, has a diverse history, and draws upon differing traditions; however, the focus of all major youth work traditions has been anthropocentric. This approach is now challenged by young people themselves through the climate justice movement, and institutionally through the United Nations Agenda 2030 resolution, which has developed integrated Sustainable Development Goals, which aim to “balance” social, environmental, and economic imperatives. This article examines what insights can be gained from ecopedagogy that would enable youth work to fully integrate an ecological perspective alongside traditional anthropological concerns. The discussion focuses on the nexus and tensions between ecopedagogy …

Health Equity: Communicating Impaired Water Status, Emily Potter May 2024

Health Equity: Communicating Impaired Water Status, Emily Potter

Two Heads Are Better Than One: Single Pilot Operation Threatens The Safety Of The Friendly Skies, Alexandria E. Rook

Arkansas Law Review

Boeing’s Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (“MCAS”), an automated piloting system, is only supposed to handle aircraft operations in very specific circumstances. Despite devasting results with MCAS, Boeing has another automated piloting system on the horizon that poses even more grave risks: Single Pilot Operation (“SPO”). Boeing—along with Airbus—wants to replace one of the pilots in the cockpit of commercial airline flights with the new SPO technology it is developing. The FAA should not allow SPO technology to be implemented because it is premature, motivated by financial gain to the detriment of safety, and ignores the importance of professional judgment in …

Jesus, Nazareth And The Identity Of Catholic Schools, Maurice Ryan May 2024

Jesus, Nazareth And The Identity Of Catholic Schools, Maurice Ryan

eJournal of Catholic Education in Australasia

The identity of Jesus of Nazareth is the foundation of the identity of Catholic schools. Often, assertions about the identity of Jesus in relation to Catholics schools are presented without reference to the biblical record. This article seeks to provide biblical context to discussions about the identity of Jesus of Nazareth. These contextual discussions about Jesus are designed to aid considerations of Catholic school identity. The specific focus of this article is a survey of contemporary literature on Jesus’ hometown—Nazareth. A focus on Nazareth does not reveal the whole story of Jesus; it offers one piece of the jigsaw revealing …

The Stability Of Epigenetic Variants That Can Act As Loci Causing Phenotypic Change, Raul Faburrieta May 2024

The Stability Of Epigenetic Variants That Can Act As Loci Causing Phenotypic Change, Raul Faburrieta

Biology Theses

Epigenetic variations are a possible source of heritable phenotypic variation. In this study I focus on phenotypic alterations seen in epigenetic Recombinant Inbred Lines (epiRILs) of Arabidopsis thaliana. These epiRILs allow me to study the effects differentially methylated regions (DMRs) have on phenotypic variance. In a study performed in 2014 by Cortijo et al., they found that DMR’s affect flowering time and root length when grown under greenhouse conditions. In this study, I replicated the Cortijo et al. (2014) study, with some changes, to see whether the same significant eQTL regions are found. I found that, some of the eQTLs …

The Interplay Of Gut Microbiota And Their Metabolites As Potential Regulators Of Resilience Or Susceptibility To Traumatic Stress In Male And Female Rats, Arax Tanelian May 2024

The Interplay Of Gut Microbiota And Their Metabolites As Potential Regulators Of Resilience Or Susceptibility To Traumatic Stress In Male And Female Rats, Arax Tanelian

NYMC Student Theses and Dissertations

Exposure to traumatic stress is a major risk factor for the development of mood disorders in a subpopulation of individuals, while others remain resilient. Notably, women are twice as likely as men to develop affective disorders in the aftermath of trauma. The mechanisms and contributing factors that influence sex-related disparities in mood disorders and variations in resilience remain unclear. We hypothesized that sex-specific inter-individual differences in microbial composition, functionality, and metabolites would contribute to host resilience or susceptibility to stress-induced psychopathologies. In this study, we used single prolonged stress (SPS), an animal model of Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), to …

Farmers’ Hiring Decisions Towards Farm Mechanization Services In The Cauvery Delta Zone Of Tamil Nadu, Krishnadas R May 2024

Farmers’ Hiring Decisions Towards Farm Mechanization Services In The Cauvery Delta Zone Of Tamil Nadu, Krishnadas R

Theses and Dissertations

Agriculture is critical to any country's economic development. It not only benefits the primary and secondary sectors but also helps the economy flourish. In addition to ensuring food security, the Indian agricultural sector provides work to huge populations, both directly and indirectly. Traditional farming practices are now overused, labour is no longer abundant, and the power demand is rising steadily. The rapid development of technology has given rise to new opportunities in agriculture (Balafoutis, Evert, & Fountas, 2020). Technology aids agricultural growth by allowing more effective utilization of inputs. It has the potential to make an immense contribution to agricultural …
