Parents’ Perspectives On School Readiness In Preschool-Age Children In Idaho, Courtney Painton
Parents’ Perspectives On School Readiness In Preschool-Age Children In Idaho, Courtney Painton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Over half of Idaho’s incoming kindergarteners lack the necessary school readiness skills. The environment in which the child lives and grows, which includes the child’s parents, determines the child’s readiness for school. This study addressed Idaho parents’ roles in preparing their preschool-aged child for kindergarten, and their current ability to access resources and information on school readiness. The study was grounded in Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, which provided a framework for the influence of parents on a child’s school readiness outcomes based on the idea that a person’s behavior evolves based on the relationship between the person and their environment. …
Examining Ecological Harshness, Sociosexuality, And Mate Value In Women’S Preferences For Men’S Height And Shoulder-To-Hip Ratio, Ray Garza, Regina Gonzalez Elizondo, Farid Pazhoohi
Examining Ecological Harshness, Sociosexuality, And Mate Value In Women’S Preferences For Men’S Height And Shoulder-To-Hip Ratio, Ray Garza, Regina Gonzalez Elizondo, Farid Pazhoohi
School of Psychology
Physical features in men, such as height and shoulder-to-hip ratio (SHR), have been shown to contribute to women’s mate preferences. The independent and interactive effects of height and SHR have been shown to be associated with attractiveness, masculinity, dominance, and fighting ability. It is suggested that these sexually dimorphic features are a reflection of men’s genetic quality, in addition to the ability to provide direct benefits (e.g., protection, resource provisioning). The current study investigated how ecological harshness may modulate women’s mate preferences to men displaying variations in height and SHR ratio. In a sample of predominately Hispanic women (N = …

Catheter-Based Fetal Cardiac Interventions, Betul Yilmaz Furtun, Shaine Alaine Morris
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Fetal cardiac intervention (FCI) is an emerging and rapidly advancing group of interventions designed to improve outcomes for fetuses with cardiovascular disease. Currently, FCI is comprised of pharmacologic therapies (e.g., trans-placental antiarrhythmics for fetal arrhythmia), open surgical procedures (e.g., surgical resection of pericardial teratoma), and catheter-based procedures (e.g., fetal aortic valvuloplasty for aortic stenosis). This review focuses on the rationale, criteria for inclusion, technical details, and current outcomes of the three most frequently performed catheter-based FCI procedures: (1) aortic valvuloplasty for critical aortic stenosis (AS) associated with evolving hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), (2) atrial septal intervention for HLHS with …
Seventy-Two Words For Potato: Irish Language Sources For Food History, Mairtin Macconiomaire, Dónall Ó Braonáin
Seventy-Two Words For Potato: Irish Language Sources For Food History, Mairtin Macconiomaire, Dónall Ó Braonáin
Books/Book Chapters
The Irish word for generous is flaithiúil, which stems from the word ‘flaith’ or prince, so in Irish to be generous is to be princely. The Irish for the Department of Justice is An Roinn Dlí agus Cirt—literally, the department of the law and what is right: the Irish language separates the law from what is right or just. The Irish saying ‘Fáílte Uí Cheallaigh’—the welcome of the O’Kellys—carries memories of an exceptional hospitality event that happened seven centuries ago in east Galway/ south Roscommon but is still preserved in today’s speech.10 This chapter seeks to discuss the wealth of …
Bittersweet Spirits: Transnational Food Memory And The Persistent Production Of Non-Mainstream Alcohol In Trinidad, Shrinagar Indra Francis
Bittersweet Spirits: Transnational Food Memory And The Persistent Production Of Non-Mainstream Alcohol In Trinidad, Shrinagar Indra Francis
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Whether we perceive the process of food leaving its mark on our culture as a function of genetic or collective memory, or a combination, informs the ways we interrogate the continued existence of these foods and their practices across time and landscapes. Within the postcolonial context, the process of re-embodiment is an inherently bittersweet one in that it comes as a consequence of loss and rupture and is motivated by a desire to be remade. Prior to colonialism, the production of alcohol was a profound aspect of the lives of the many peoples of West and West-Central Africa. Descendants of …
The Influence Of Western Music And The Wind Band In The Republic Of Korea, Mark Reimer
The Influence Of Western Music And The Wind Band In The Republic Of Korea, Mark Reimer
Journal of Global Awareness
Beginning with the arrival of American missionaries in 1885, the music of South Korea continues to reflect Western tonality, aesthetics, education, and popular taste. Through this musical and historical evolution, however, the country has not forsaken its traditions, musical imprint, and cultural identity, as will be discussed in the examination of select composers and music compositions.

Traces Of Tradition: Exploring The “Food In Olden Times” Theme Within The Irish Folklore Commission Schools’ Collection 1937–39, Caitríona Nic Philibín
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Ireland’s rich folklore archives provide a wealth of insight into the memories of her people. The importance of recording oral history across Ireland in the late 1930’s spurred the Folklore Commission to establish the Schools’ Collection (SC). Essentially, the commission enlisted national school children, within the Irish Free State, to collect the memories of the their relatives and older people within their communities. The culmination of these efforts resulted in over 700,000 documents illuminating Ireland’s traditions, customs and practices. Analysis of the children’s findings reveals exciting local and regional traditions through the words of curious pupils discovering the food memories …
"Such A Mixt Company Among Us": The Huguenot Experience In Puritan Boston, 1686-1748, Christopher Jones
"Such A Mixt Company Among Us": The Huguenot Experience In Puritan Boston, 1686-1748, Christopher Jones
The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing
Preaching to his Boston congregation in 1670, prominent Puritan theologian Increase Mather told his listeners that "the Toleration of all Religions and Perswasions [sic], is the way to have no Religion at all." This teaching, notoriously applied in the form of persecution and discrimination to any outsiders or dissenters, illustrates one-half of an interesting paradox that existed within seventeenth- century New England Puritan society. The other half of the paradox can be seen in a sermon delivered by Mather in 1682. In this address, Mather spoke to his listeners of the French Reformists who suffered intense persecution under Catholic rule …
Caesar’S Cervisia, Travis Rupp
Caesar’S Cervisia, Travis Rupp
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Examinations of Roman cuisine often downplay the role of beer in the ancient Roman diet seeing it as a symbol of barbarity. This essay examines the plausibility of beer as a standard component of the Roman soldier’s diet and seeks to highlight when it may have become necessary for military advancement. Julius Caesar’s reliance on auxiliary forces to campaign in the North from 58-51 BCE ensured that cultures known for producing beer influenced legionary forces reliant on local resources to survive. This essay also asserts the implausibility of wine consumption amongst Caesar’s men and concludes that the acceptance of beer …
Butter Woman, Farmer’S Wife And Housewife Of The Year: Tracing Women In Ireland’S Domestic Food History, Gemma M. Carney
Butter Woman, Farmer’S Wife And Housewife Of The Year: Tracing Women In Ireland’S Domestic Food History, Gemma M. Carney
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
This article uses three distinct roles to sketch out the influence of women on Ireland’s domestic food history. Drawing on a range of primary and secondary sources including the Irish Butter Museum, the Irish Farmer’s Journal and qualitative interviews the article charts a course for tracing women’s integral role in the maintenance of food culture and traditions through a century of significant social and cultural change. As butter women, farmer’s wives, and housewives, women interacted with state and social structures in ways which demonstrate how patriarchal principles dominated Irish culture and society throughout the twentieth century. The paper concludes that …
Nudging Ninkasi’S Memory: Recreating Ancient Sumerian Brewing And Drinking, Marie Hopwood
Nudging Ninkasi’S Memory: Recreating Ancient Sumerian Brewing And Drinking, Marie Hopwood
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
When archaeological interpretations are grounded in biased translations from early researchers, faulty knowledge is created and then taught or picked up through research by future generations. The way that we think about the past and engage with our own knowledge-memories is affected, leaving us to see the past through half-dark glasses. False information colours our understanding of the ancient world and the descendants of those societies. Archaeological studies of Mesopotamian women and their roles related to beer have suffered from poor translations, been set aside as footnoted moments, or ignored entirely. Often hidden in archaeological literature is the fact that …
Collecting Ireland’S Food Memories As A Resource For Food Tourism, John D. Mulcahy
Collecting Ireland’S Food Memories As A Resource For Food Tourism, John D. Mulcahy
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
An inventory by Teagasc’s National Food Centre, prepared for the Euroterroirs project in 1997, is a rare, if not the only, example of an attempt to recognise, document, and catalogue Irish traditional food and beverages. Even at that, given the brief provided by Euroterroirs, the inventory was limited to 100 local traditional products. But we know from Lucas (1960) that Irish food presents a remarkable continuity of traditions from the time of the earliest documentary evidence to the present. Food and beverages are such an integral part of Ireland’s cultural fabric that the threads, traces, and fragments are not only …
Impactful Digital Technology Coaches: Identifying Their Characteristics And Competencies While Delineating Their Role, Tiffany L. Gallagher, Catherine Susin, Arlene Grierson
Impactful Digital Technology Coaches: Identifying Their Characteristics And Competencies While Delineating Their Role, Tiffany L. Gallagher, Catherine Susin, Arlene Grierson
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Digital technology coaches (DTCs) often support teachers with integrating technology into their classroom and instructional program, as well as provide ongoing staff development. To be effective, coaches tend to have specific characteristics for instructional coaching and competencies for educational coaching. We investigated if these characteristics and competencies applied to effective DTCs while we observed their proficiency with technology, their interactions with other educators, and the way they provide support for the teacher-professional learning (PL) process. Three DTCs led over 80 K–12 teachers from the same school district in classroom coaching sessions, collaborative planning meetings, PL sessions, and conference presentations. In …

Perceptions Of Pre-Service Teachers About Natural Disasters: Coronavirus, Earthquake, Fire, And Flood, Pınar Bozca, Eylem Yalçınkaya Önder
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
This research explores the perceptions of preservice teachers in Turkey in terms of their preparedness for various disasters, including epidemics, earthquakes, fires, and floods, all of which have profound social and economic impacts on education. Using a descriptive survey model, the study examined the responses of 512 preservice teachers at a single university across all levels of their educational program. The survey, conducted digitally due to the pandemic, consisted of 70 questions. Findings reveal inconsistent levels of confidence and readiness across different types of disasters. For instance, while most preservice teachers understand the severity of the coronavirus and are concerned …
Life, Death, Salt: Salty Memories, Anne Meneley
Life, Death, Salt: Salty Memories, Anne Meneley
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
I explore how some of my childhood memories were inspired by salt and preserved by it, from Star Trek to salt and vinegar potato chips. Once so valued as to be considered “white gold”, in the era of the ultra-processed industrial food that dominates contemporary North American food, salt has become more like “white death.” (“Pass the white death” is a joking request for the salt shaker.) A road salt shortage during Toronto’s icy winter of 2018-2019 inspired a joke about how the mayor will be forced to use Toronto’s expensive, Himalayan table salts to ice the roads! In a …

Food As Learning At Airfield Estate – Living The Legacy, Aoibhín Moore Heslin, Eliza Sullivan, Kirstie Mcadoo
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Food functions as a record of history, a conduit for science, a means of showcasing cultural identities, and a way to connect communities. This paper will aim to outline how the history and legacy of the Overend sisters is being adapted and drawn on to influence efforts in food education and food sustainability practices at Airfield Estate. In 1974, the sisters placed the Estate in trust to the people of Ireland on the condition that the space be used for recreation and education. Today, this has been reinterpreted to reflect modern challenges in food sustainability. Airfield Estate’s overall mission is …
The Memory Landscapes Of Food: The Sense Of Nostalgia And The Traces Of The Past In The Arbëreshë Microcosm Of Food And Feast, Elisa Pastorelli
The Memory Landscapes Of Food: The Sense Of Nostalgia And The Traces Of The Past In The Arbëreshë Microcosm Of Food And Feast, Elisa Pastorelli
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Referring to an ethnographic study of the arbëreshë community of Molise, this article explores the interplays between food, senses, and nostalgia to explain how food activates the involuntary memory of the eater and resists corrosion over time. On one hand, the evocative power of food allows the community to reproduce and pass on the culinary “landscape of memory” (Turri, 1998, 156). On the other side, bringing abundance industrialization has profoundly changed the value of food, generating a shift in sociability and ways of being together. So, the memory of past eating practices of commensality and conviviality cause a feeling of …
The Challenging Food Regionality In Lower Silesia: Between Nostalgia And Innovation, Mariusz Rybak
The Challenging Food Regionality In Lower Silesia: Between Nostalgia And Innovation, Mariusz Rybak
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Lower Silesia, Poland, is a region that experienced almost a total change of population after 1945. Often described as a region of uprooted people and without its own identity and traditions, the regionality of its food presents in fact a particular phenomenon of transplanted and re-invented traditions. Foods declared regional culinary heritage or traditions in the last few decades are mostly either those brought by the ancestors of today's Lower Silesians who migrated here, or traditions related to the place, re-created and carried on even without the population in which they originally evolved. Accordingly, regionality is defined by social or …
“My Mother’S Bolivian Kitchen”: Latin American Cookery Books, Tradition And Ideology, Igor Cusack
“My Mother’S Bolivian Kitchen”: Latin American Cookery Books, Tradition And Ideology, Igor Cusack
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Cookery books that claim to provide national recipes, as well as anthropological accounts of national cuisines, tend to promote particular ideologies. This paper examines a sample of Latin American cookery books with two such ideologies in mind: domesticity, with the woman firmly located in the home, and nationalism with appeals to the marvellous cuisine of the relevant nation. The books often see women as being fully responsible for food preparation and providing a well-run and comfortable home for the family. They are frequently also dedicated to the author’s mother or grandmother. José Sánchez-H’s My Mother’s Bolivian Kitchen highlights women as …
Academic Search And Discovery Tools In The Age Of Ai And Large Language Models: An Overview Of The Space, Aaron Tay
2024 AI for Research Week
In the ever-evolving landscape of academic research, “AI tools” for literature search and synthesis are currently getting a lot of attention. These tools promise to ramp up productivity, enabling us to accomplish more in less time or absorb more knowledge without drowning in endless reading. With the sheer number of these systems increasing daily, it's natural to wonder: are they really worth our time and money? And if they are, how should we go about picking the right one from the multitude of options?
In this talk, I will share my views on how the space has developed over two …
Digital Technology Affordances Reshaping Entrepreneurship Development Process: A Systematic Review, Emmanuel Okoro Ajah
Digital Technology Affordances Reshaping Entrepreneurship Development Process: A Systematic Review, Emmanuel Okoro Ajah
The African Journal of Information Systems
Digital technology has brought about the emergence of digital entrepreneurship, which has significantly disrupted existing products and services and the way that they are marketed. This new wave of entrepreneurship has piqued the interest of scholars from various disciplines, including Information Systems. However, in the literature, there are insufficient theoretical explanations of digital technology's role in the processes involved in digital entrepreneurship development. To address this, a systematic review was conducted to comprehensively explore digital technology affordances in digital entrepreneurship development. Such affordances are the factors that cause the digitalization of the events that characterize digital entrepreneurship development. The outcome …
Criminalizing Transgender Care, Lewis Grossman
Criminalizing Transgender Care, Lewis Grossman
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
Since 2021, twenty-four states, in extraordinarily quick succession, have enacted statutes banning physicians from prescribing puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones to minors for treatment of gender dysphoria. Although the Food and Drug Administration has not approved these drugs for this use, off-label prescribing is a common practice, and leading medical organizations all agree that this off-label use of puberty blockers and sex hormones is an essential component of transgender medical care. These state laws thus represent an extreme, and unprecedented, interference with the provision of standard-of-care medicine. This article, after exploring the ongoing litigation challenging these bans, argues that they …

Entertainment-Education And Climate Change: Program Examples, Evidence, And Best Practices From Around The World, Suruchi Sood, Amy Henderson Riley, Lyena Birkenstock
College of Population Health Faculty Papers
Entertainment-education is a global theory-driven and evidence-based storytelling strategy that promotes social and behavioral change. A formal review of the peer-reviewed and grey literature, alongside consultations with program and industry experts, revealed several contemporary examples of entertainment-education and climate change. Late-night comedy, with the inclusion of climate change storylines within popular entertainment, is common in the Global North. In the Global South, climate adaptation and mitigation narratives are situated in formats portraying audiences’ lived experiences. Crosscutting trends relate to documentary storytelling, children’s programming, and future efforts. Recommendations include re-examining theories across the social-ecological model; placing entertainment front and center; including …
Exploration Of Centralized And Decentralized Education Systems Around The World, Melissa Feiger
Exploration Of Centralized And Decentralized Education Systems Around The World, Melissa Feiger
College of Education Theses and Dissertations
Through the use of the Program for International Student Assessment’s (PISA) Global Competence results, the Economic Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Democracy Index ratings, and centralization-decentralization spectrum rubrics, this dissertation shows the association between level of democracy and education system, and the association of these variables with the global competence of a country. This study aims to answer two research questions: (1) To what extent is there an association between the level of democracy (full democracy, flawed democracy, hybrid regime, authoritarian regime) and the implementation of a centralized or decentralized education system? (2) To what extent does this association determine Global Competence …
Farmer's Adaptive Capacity And Adoption Of Strategies To Climate Change Among Mountain Communities In Nepal, Tanvir Hossain
Farmer's Adaptive Capacity And Adoption Of Strategies To Climate Change Among Mountain Communities In Nepal, Tanvir Hossain
LSU Master's Theses
Climate change presents significant challenges to agriculture worldwide, particularly where farming is central to livelihoods. This phenomenon has been linked to decreasing crop yields due to rising temperatures and reduced rainfall, particularly affecting low-income countries with limited adaptive capabilities. Grasping how farmers perceive climate change is essential for developing effective adaptation strategies to lessen its adverse impacts. This study concentrated on investigating the perceptions and adaptive strategies employed by smallholder farmers in Nepal's Mustang district, utilizing primary data sources. Data from 131 randomly selected households were gathered through structured interviews, while focus group discussions provided qualitative insights into farmers' views …

Interleukin-6 (IL-6)-class inflammatory cytokines signal through the Janus tyrosine kinase (JAK)/signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) pathway and promote the development of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC); however, the functions of specific intracellular signaling mediators in this process are less well defined. Using a ligand-controlled and pancreas-specific knockout in adult mice, we demonstrate in this study that JAK1 deficiency prevents the formation of KRASG12D-induced pancreatic tumors, and we establish that JAK1 is essential for the constitutive activation of STAT3, whose activation is a prominent characteristic of PDAC. We identify CCAAT/enhancer binding protein δ (C/EBPδ) as a biologically relevant …
Labor Law, Ownership, And The Firm, Sanjukta Paul
Labor Law, Ownership, And The Firm, Sanjukta Paul
Law & Economics Working Papers
Labor law has its own working theory of the business firm, not derivable from another area of law. This "theory of the firm," which the affirmative provisions of labor law are taken to both modify and preserve, is more overtly hierarchical than in other areas. This is true across the main functional domains of labor law: union formation; expressive and associational rights; and the scope of collective bargaining. A rich vein of existing scholarship deals with both hierarchy and deference to property within labor law. The arguments of this essay emerge from considering these aspects of labor law in conjunction …

Examining Differences In Concept Representation Across Similarity Spaces Between Humans And Large Language Models, Krishnachandra Nair
Computer Science Senior Theses
The replication of human concept representation is a critical task for the pursuit of artificial general intelligence. With the recent influx of large language models that demonstrate text-generation capabilities nearly on par with humans, the question stands on whether these large language models can capture concepts within language. We examine this question by exploring differences in concept representation across similarity spaces between humans and LLMs. We find that, while concept representation within LLMs does partially mimic human concept representation, LLMs are greatly limited by their dependence on semantic information and cannot therefore develop an understanding of human social code or …
