I’M Conscious Of Time: Pinhole Vignettes Of Human Co-Existence In The Anthropocene, Jennie Moran
I’M Conscious Of Time: Pinhole Vignettes Of Human Co-Existence In The Anthropocene, Jennie Moran
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
This paper explores the practice of hospitality in the context of human-induced climate change. In this new and uncertain geological era, we will be required to re-examine our reciprocity with the earth and our fellow humans. We have over-farmed and over-extracted. Our voraciousness has left the soil close to exhaustion with concerns expressed that we have a finite number of harvests left. We have more mouths to feed than ever, villages are drowning under rising seas and our activities have initiated a mass extinction of the species with whom we share the earth. The grief surrounding this crisis is complex …

Sea Turtle Conservation At Tortuguero: A Case On How To Turn An Ecological Challenge Into A Collaborative Opportunity For Research, Education Outreach, And Business Development, Minh Q. Huynh, Jose Noguera, Roldán A. Valverde
Southwestern Business Administration Journal
This paper provides an overview of sea turtle research and conservation at Tortuguero. The conservation work began in 1950 and is still active. How did this effort to conserve sea turtles get started and how did this process help turn an ecological challenge into a global collaborative initiative? This case is not just about sea turtle conservation, but more importantly it is about approaching a complex problem from multiple perspectives and finding innovative ways to mitigate the problem. Though the focus is on sea turtles, the process, approach, and experience learned from this case can be adapted for guidance in …
Food And Memory In Literature: A Folkloric Approach, Pola Schiavone
Food And Memory In Literature: A Folkloric Approach, Pola Schiavone
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
This paper analyzes food as a memory device in the novel Doña Flor y sus dos maridos by the Brazilian author Jorge Amado. Set in San Salvador du Bahía in northern Brazil, the novel follows Doña Flor after her husband Vadinho dies. Food and drink – considered here as folkloric forms – play a central role not only in her exploration of memories of her husband but also in the broader bahiana society with its mix of different ethnicities (African, indigenous, European). Drawing on Felix Coluccio’s and Dan Ben-Amos notions of folklore and literature and Arjun Appadurai’s exploration of the …
The Wild Arctic Char In Swedish Sápmi – From Staple Ingredient To Nostalgic Food, Julia C. Carrillo Ocampo
The Wild Arctic Char In Swedish Sápmi – From Staple Ingredient To Nostalgic Food, Julia C. Carrillo Ocampo
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
The way food is preserved, prepared and consumed is embedded in cultural symbolism strongly connected to the geographical landscape. This article focuses on the memories of Sami actors within the wild Arctic char value chain to explore how changes in the foodscape influence the way this produce is prepared and consumed in contemporary Sápmi and the use and view of traditional preservation techniques. The empirical material was obtained through interviews and observations with Sami actors as they are the dominant agents related to this produce. Consequently, I traced different narratives attached to the char in the region called Swedish Sápmi …
The Subconscious Of Traditional Practices: Turkish Cuisine, Serife Umay Cicik
The Subconscious Of Traditional Practices: Turkish Cuisine, Serife Umay Cicik
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Turkey stands out among the leading countries, particularly in the consumption of meat, milk, and dairy products. In terms of climate and physical conditions, it has the capacity to produce these commodities domestically. Additionally, it is situated in a geographically advantageous position rich in seafood resources. Turkish cuisine is further enriched by dishes and desserts prepared with dough. However, food preparation and cooking methods, equipment, storage conditions, presentation styles, consumption habits, spices, and sauces bear traces of various culinary cultures. Wars, natural disasters, political events, trade routes, and religious structures are among the factors that most significantly influence these differences. …
Factors Influencing Shelter Dog Retention And Return, Hallie Anselmi
Factors Influencing Shelter Dog Retention And Return, Hallie Anselmi
School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference
Adopting a dog from a shelter is an impactful decision for both dog and owner. To better understand adoption outcomes, I explore the influences of a dog’s age, time spent in the shelter (SLOS), and time in foster care. Data from a Washington shelter (n = 224) were analyzed using a logistic regression and correlations. The regression indicated no significant results between the variables, however, there was a significant correlation between age and SLOS. The data was limited by a small return sample. Overall, this study helps add to the narrative for how shelters can increase adoptions and decrease returns.
Pork Problems - Embodied Britishisms Onboard The First Fleet To Australia, Evelyn Lambeth
Pork Problems - Embodied Britishisms Onboard The First Fleet To Australia, Evelyn Lambeth
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Pigs arrived in Australia with British settlers onboard the First Fleet in 1788 and rapidly spread. As a product of British Imperialism, Australia has adopted many cultural consumption practices from its parent colony. Meat is on many tables, but not every table showcases the same animal, and these cultural differences illustrate that conditions of edibility are not equally defined. British values were attached to pigs, embedding them with transformative abilities to shape colonial ecosystems. Australian industries, jobs, and livelihoods are deeply connected to the past. The East India Company introduced Chinese pigs to Britain from 1685. The history of pigs …
“Praying And Eating”: The Preservation Of Jewish Food Traditions In The Wake Of Brexit Trauma, Angela Hanratty
“Praying And Eating”: The Preservation Of Jewish Food Traditions In The Wake Of Brexit Trauma, Angela Hanratty
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
This research examines the impact that Brexit, the Northern Ireland Protocol, and the Windsor Framework have had on the food traditions of the Jewish population of Ireland, through focusing on the lived experience of the Jewish communities of Belfast and Dublin and their collective memory. While there has been much debate on the lasting effect of the UK leaving the EU on industry and agriculture, the deleterious impact on the kosher observant in Ireland has been less documented, with specific challenges for the preservation of food traditions in a community with a history “full of praying and eating” (Maurice Cohen, …

This work concerns an urban vegetable garden beyond 200 plots in Famalicão (northern Portugal) and aims to check out mnemic narratives circulating there linked to gastronomy and technical agricultural resources that have been used in the past. This research has been developed since last December/2022 and will check this environment for four seasons of the year. Its methodology is based on an ethnographic exercise, using flanerie dynamics and the application of interviews with open-ended questions. This analysis is supported by the Anthropology of Food, the concept of Collective Memory, by Halbwachs, and the Semiotics of Culture, by Iuri Lotman, approaching …
Collective Memory, Culinary Continuity, And Solemn Repasts: Lagana, Itria And The History Of Pasta In Southern Italy, Anthony F. Buccini
Collective Memory, Culinary Continuity, And Solemn Repasts: Lagana, Itria And The History Of Pasta In Southern Italy, Anthony F. Buccini
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Though today it is communis opinio that the Arabs introduced pasta, especially dried pasta, to Sicily and from there it spread to the continent, there is no evidence to support this theory (Buccini 2013, 2015b, 2024). There is, however, ample evidence both textual and linguistic that this food has been known in southern Italy at least since classical times. Here I argue that an examination of holiday foods, especially those of what I call “solemn holidays,” provides further evidence that pasta has been an integral part of southern Italian cuisine for a very long time.

Extension Research
Natural gas extraction is a critical driver of the economy in western North America. Ecological reclamation is important to ensure surface disturbance impacts associated with natural gas development are not permanent and to assist native biota. Previous studies in semi-arid natural gas fields within Sublette County, Wyoming, USA have shown insects respond favorably to 1–3-year-old well pads undergoing reclamation compared to older successional reference vegetation communities dominated by Wyoming big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata spp. Wyomingensis). Here, we examined well pads which were initially seed 5, 8, 10, 11, and 12 years prior to our study. We used a free, image-based …

‘A Mirror For Fellow-Citizens’: Cicero’S Proto-Transformational Leadership Ideal Of The Rector Rei Publicae, Evan Rw Dutmer
‘A Mirror For Fellow-Citizens’: Cicero’S Proto-Transformational Leadership Ideal Of The Rector Rei Publicae, Evan Rw Dutmer
New England Classical Journal
In this article, I situate Cicero’s discussion of the rector rei publicae and orator perfectus in the De republica and De oratore in the context of James MacGregor Burns’s theory of the transformational leadership in his influential 1978 Leadership. I then consider how Cicero’s rector rei publicae would exhibit leadership behaviors of the Full Range Leadership Model, a popular operationalization of transformational leadership theory. Throughout, I also consider the limitations of applying transformational leadership as an interpretive frame for an ancient Roman leader such as Cicero. Cicero’s vision, I contend, can only succeed in being proto-transformational. The result of this …

Minor Characters, Major Shifts: The Cases Of Pholoe, The Cretan Slave (Aen. 5.281-5), And Cretheus, The Bard (Aen. 9.774-7), Lien Van Geel
New England Classical Journal
Although Pholoe, the Cretan slave (Aen. 5.281-5), and Cretheus, the bard (Aen. 9.774-7), have both received some scholarly attention, I demonstrate that there is additional significance in their fleeting appearances. Virgil’s seemingly rushed treatment of these two characters has larger implications than initially may seem the case, especially when placing them next to Virgil’s use of Homeric epic in the particularly intertext-heavy Books 5 and 9. I demonstrate how these minor characters function as Virgil’s illustrations of Aeneas’ movement away from the Homeric world, as the text progresses towards the proto-Roman project that features prominently in the Aeneid’s narrative.

Wildlife demography is influenced by behavioural decisions, with sleep being a crucial avian behaviour. Avian species use roost sites to minimize thermoregulation costs, predation risk and enhance foraging efficiency. Sleep locations are often reused, forming networks within the home range. Our study, focusing on female eastern wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) during the reproductive season, used social network analysis to quantify both roost site selection and network structure. We identified roost networks which were composed of a small percentage of hub roost sites connecting satellite roosts. Hub roosts were characterized by greater values of betweenness (β = 0.62, s.e. = …

Nursing Leadership in Community Engagement Projects
Improving Health Literacy on Appropriate Use of Medical Services
As part of a nursing leadership project, a team of nursing students at Seattle Pacific University (SPU) collaborated with a Washington State affordable independent living facility for seniors; they focused on providing information on the appropriate use of emergency care, urgent care, and primary care services for various health concerns. This project began with a team member recognizing a pattern within the older adult population entering the Emergency Department (ED). This observation showed that a noticeable portion of the older adult population could benefit from clarification about when to seek out …
Mitigating Burnout In Primary School Teachers Since The Covid-19 Pandemic, Janine Celeste Adrian
Mitigating Burnout In Primary School Teachers Since The Covid-19 Pandemic, Janine Celeste Adrian
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Although teacher burnout has been experienced for decades, teachers faced additional stressors with the onset of COVID-19. Teachers faced newfound stressors due to lockdowns and restrictions on gathering face-to-face and instruction becoming virtual. Even the youngest students (kindergarten to fifth grade) had to be taught according to the virtual learning mandates. As a result, primary school teachers began to experience burnout differently. The purpose of this study was to explore the support primary school teachers needed to help mitigate the burnout they experienced due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This study explored what interpersonal, intrapersonal, or educational support helps mitigate burnout …

Immune Responses Of Neonatal (14-Day Old) And Adult (6 Weeks Old) Mice Lung And Spleen Cells To Gamma-Irradiated Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Stimulation, Oyinkansola F. Adeyemi
Biotechnology Theses
Tuberculosis (TB) caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is a global health challenge, especially in vulnerable populations like neonates, whose immune systems are still developing. Understanding the immune responses to Mtb in neonates is critical for the development of better vaccine and treatment strategies. Building upon previous research from our laboratory, which demonstrated that γMtb stimulated neonatal mice (0, 3, and 7 days old) lung cells displayed distinct cytokine profiles and increased expansion of myeloid-derived suppressor cell subpopulations than adult mice lung cells. In the current study, we investigated age-dependent immune responses in 14-day-old (neonates) and 6-week-old (adults) mice. We found …

Generation And Characterization Of Lipid Nanoparticles For Dna Plasmid Delivery And Pharmacological Characterization, Sahana John
Biotechnology Theses
Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) have shown promise for delivering nucleic acids like DNA plasmids, but packaging large plasmids remains challenging. The findings and experimental work detailed in this thesis are geared towards providing a proof of concept and providing preliminary confirmation of the guiding principle.
We synthesized LNPs containing cationic lipids (D-Lin-MC3) to encapsulate the large pLVX-ZsGreen and psiCHECK (luciferase) plasmids (~10-14kb) using a microfluidic system. Characterization included size, charge, morphology, plasmid encapsulation efficiency and in vitro/in vivo studies. The LNP-pDNA particles were ~100nm in size with high encapsulation efficiency. The LNPs efficiently transfected 293T cells with low cytotoxicity, enabling strong …
Host-Microbe Interactions And The Developing Gut Microbiome In Infants With Cystic Fibrosis, Paige E. Salerno
Host-Microbe Interactions And The Developing Gut Microbiome In Infants With Cystic Fibrosis, Paige E. Salerno
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a progressive genetic disease that leads to dysfunction of ion transport across epithelial cell membranes. A major hallmark in CF is chronic inflammation in the intestine, though the mechanisms by which this occurs are still unknown. Here, we describe the developing microbiome in CF infants. We first performed metagenomic sequencing on a longitudinal cohort of CF infants and compared the microbial dynamics of these samples to multiple non-CF cohorts. Through various computational approaches, we reveal a delay in the maturation of the microbiome in CF compared to non-CF, characterized by shifts in abundance and prevalence of …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Delineating developmental events is central to experimental research using early life stages, permitting widespread identification of changes in event timing between species and environments. Yet, identifying developmental events is incredibly challenging, limiting the scale, reproducibility and throughput of using early life stages in experimental biology. We introduce Dev-ResNet, a small and efficient 3D convolutional neural network capable of detecting developmental events characterised by both spatial and temporal features, such as the onset of cardiac function and radula activity. We demonstrate the efficacy of Dev-ResNet using 10 diverse functional events throughout the embryonic development of the great pond snail, Lymnaea stagnalis. Dev-ResNet …
Novel Role And Mechanisms Of Brd4 In Mediating Mesothelial To Mesenchymal Transition And Pleural Fibrosis, Felix Kankam
Novel Role And Mechanisms Of Brd4 In Mediating Mesothelial To Mesenchymal Transition And Pleural Fibrosis, Felix Kankam
Biotechnology Theses
Pleural fibrosis is characterized by myofibroblast accumulation and increased expression of collagen and other extracellular matrices due to injury to the pleura and remodeling. Mesothelial to mesenchymal transition (MesoMT) is an important pathological event that contributes to the pool of myofibroblasts although its regulation remains incompletely understood. Recent research has reported the role of BRD4, a member of the bromodomain extra terminal domain (BET) family, in developing fibrosis in the heart and the lungs. One recent study showed that MEOX1 is a downstream target of BRD4 and mediated cardiac fibroblast activation. Our joint work also demonstrated that NOX4 is implicated …
A Rabbit Model Of Voice Function Changes Caused By The Administration And Subsequent Withdrawal Of Asthma Inhalers, Savannah Forbes Bullock
A Rabbit Model Of Voice Function Changes Caused By The Administration And Subsequent Withdrawal Of Asthma Inhalers, Savannah Forbes Bullock
Theses and Dissertations
Combination inhaled corticosteroids (ICs) are the primary treatment prescribed for patients with asthma; however, voice problems are also associated with ICs. In this study, 32 rabbits were assigned randomly to one of five experimental groups: baseline, induction, induction control, reversibility, and reversibility control. The baseline group received no treatment and larynges were obtained following quarantine. Rabbits belonging to experimental groups received IC treatment twice a day until trained raters noted visible vocal fold changes during endoscopy, which was performed every 2 weeks. When changes were observed, animals were euthanized, and the larynges were harvested from the experimental induction group and …

Dietary fiber supplements are a strategy to close the ‘fiber gap’ and induce targeted modulations of the gut microbiota. However, higher doses of fiber supplements cause gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms that differ among individuals. What determines these inter-individual differences is insufficiently understood. Here we analyzed findings from a six-week randomized controlled trial that evaluated GI symptoms to corn bran arabinoxylan (AX; n = 15) relative to non-fermentable microcrystalline cellulose (MCC; n = 16) at efficacious supplement doses of 25 g/day (females) or 35 g/day (males) in adults with excess weight. Self-reported flatulence, bloating, and stomach aches were evaluated weekly. Bacterial taxa …

Impact Of Workplace Racial Discrimination On The Health Of Black Men, Denise Richardson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived racially discriminatory experiences of Black men in the workplace in New York City and how those incidents affected their overall health. The study used Critical Race Theory as the theoretical framework and analyzed data gathered through semi-structured interviews with 10 participants. Findings from coding analysis indicated that Black men routinely engaged in acts of John Henryism to receive positive recognition as they navigated negative societal stereotyping, namely proving that they, as individuals, were not negative stereotypes. Additionally, the study revealed that exposure to racial discrimination in the workplace …

A total of 3102 neurons were recorded before and following acute and chronic methylphenidate (MPD) administration. Acute MPD exposure elicits mainly increases in neuronal and behavioral activity in dose–response characteristics. The response to chronic MPD exposure, as compared to acute 0.6, 2.5, or 10.0 mg/kg MPD administration, elicits electrophysiological and behavioral sensitization in some animals and electrophysiological and behavioral tolerance in others when the neuronal recording evaluations were performed based on the animals’ behavioral responses, or amount of locomotor activity, to chronic MPD exposure. The majority of neurons recorded from those expressing behavioral sensitization responded to chronic MPD with further …
