Desire Paths In The Information Landscape, Victoria Van Hyning, Mason A. Jones, Travis Wagner
Journal of Critical Digital Librarianship
Libraries and archives serve so many different users who come to information institutions with various perspectives, needs, experiences, and desires around accessing physical or digital collections. While our users may find what they are looking for immediately, many have to beat their own paths through complex systems and metadata that doesn’t align with their needs. Their search strategies may leave digital “desire paths”–alternative routes through the information landscape that can show us how to better meet their needs. This article covers three scenarios where users’ desire paths can be seen or where gaps around user experience can be better addressed. …

Advertising permeates every aspect of everyday life, with companies often changing their strategies to engage and hook audiences with continually evolving tastes. Due to the dearth of research in the field of absurdity in advertisements, this qualitative study examines the usage of absurdity and humor within selected RC Cola commercials from the viral #BastaRCColaMasarap campaign. Using literary descriptors that define absurdity (Arias-Bolzmann et al., 2000) and humor categories (Catanescu & Tom, 2001), it explicitly addresses how the chosen commercials utilize absurdity, the reasoning behind said usage, as well as how it provides insights into Filipino humor culture. Findings revealed that …

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) causes impaired kidney function in humans. However, this occurrence has not been well investigated in PAH dogs. Serum symmetrical dimethylarginine (SDMA) is one of the early biomarkers of kidney impairment. The present study aims to evaluate SDMA levels of first diagnosed PAH (n=14) compared with healthy dogs (n=12) and to analyze the correlation between SDMA levels and significant echocardiographic parameters of PAH dogs. The mean SDMA of PAH dogs was statistically higher than that of healthy dogs (P = 0.003), while the mean serum creatine level had no difference among groups (P = 0.456). Precapillary PAH …

As the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to grow and become more and more integrated into our everyday lives, it has begun to raise ethical concerns surrounding authority, autonomy, and responsibility. Researchers and consumers alike have begun to wonder how much trust we are willing to place in a non-human decision maker, especially if an Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) capable of surpassing human cognitive capabilities is ever developed. If we are willing to let an AI write essays for us, are we willing to let it manage a business? A government agency? What about a nuclear reactor?

The majority of research concerning science communication happens in spaces where people already have a vested interest in or knowledge of science, such as museums and science cafes. Thus, there is a gap in understanding what theory-based science communication looks like in non-science-centered spaces. This qualitative research study, which featured cosplaying science communicators at comic conventions, offers insights into what science communication practices occur within everyday spaces. We conducted observations of and semi-structured interviews with 15 cosplaying scientists, examining how they utilized effective framing and narrative structuring when communicating science at comic cons in cosplay. Across 700 coded utterances, cosplaying …

Introduction: Pubertal attainment is critical to reproductive longevity in heifers. Previously, four heifer pubertal classifications were identified according to attainment of blood plasma progesterone concentrations > 1 ng/ml: 1) Early; 2) Typical; 3) Start-Stop; and 4) Non-Cycling. Early and Typical heifers initiated and maintained cyclicity, Start-Stop started and then stopped cyclicity and Non- Cycling never initiated cyclicity. Start-Stop heifers segregated into Start-Stop- Discontinuous (SSD) or Start-Stop-Start (SSS), with SSD having similar phenotypes to Non-Cycling and SSS to Typical heifers. We hypothesized that these pubertal classifications are heritable, and loci associated with pubertal classifications could be identified by genome wide association …

Methionine oxidation to the sulfoxide form (MSox) is a poorly understood post-translational modification of proteins associated with non-specific chemical oxidation from reactive oxygen species (ROS), whose chemistries are linked to various disease pathologies, including neurodegeneration. Emerging evidence shows MSox site occupancy is, in some cases, under enzymatic regulatory control, mediating cellular signaling, including phosphorylation and/or calcium signaling, and raising questions as to the speciation and functional nature of MSox across the proteome. The 5XFAD lineage of the C57BL/6 mouse has well-defined Alzheimer’s and aging states. Using this model, we analyzed age-, sex-, and disease-dependent MSox speciation in the mouse hippocampus. …
