Great Smoky Geography, Ryan P. Shadbolt Jun 2024

Great Smoky Geography, Ryan P. Shadbolt

The Geographical Bulletin

In 2005 my life changed unexpectedly during a field experience to Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). Professor Jay R. Harman, a faculty member within the Department of Geography at Michigan State University, organized the experience frequently over a career spanning more than four decades. As an introverted first-generation college student from a rural blue-collar town, attending this trip was out of my comfort zone. I recently completed a bachelor’s program in meteorology and research during my master’s program focused on synoptic-scale climatology. Until then my travel to na

“It’S Volcanic Ash!” A Response That Began A 50-Year Odyssey, Russell Blong

The Geographical Bulletin

At the beginning of 1970 I had more or less finished my University of Sydney PhD on hillslope form and landslides in a chunk of New Zealand hill country. I was unsure what I wanted to work on next but I was pretty sure it wasn’t landslides and hillslopes. I joined the academic staff at Macquarie University, also in Sydney. In August 1970 I went to an ANZAAS conference in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, gave an excruciatingly boring paper on hillslope form and caught up with Colin Pain, an old mate from my undergraduate days at the University of …

Treating Invasive Tamarisk As An Intern At San Andres National Wildlife Refuge, Aaron Adams Jun 2024

Treating Invasive Tamarisk As An Intern At San Andres National Wildlife Refuge, Aaron Adams

The Geographical Bulletin

Tamarisk (also known as salt cedar) is mentioned once in the Quran, “There was for [the tribe of] Saba’ in their dwelling place a sign: two [fields of] gardens on the right and on the left. [They were told], “Eat from the provisions of your Lord and be grateful to Him. A good land [have you], and a forgiving Lord. “But they turned away [refusing], so We sent upon them the flood of the dam, and We replaced their two [fields of] gardens with gardens of bitter fruit, tamarisks and something of sparse lote trees. (Surah 34, Āyah 15,16)” (The …

The Geographical Bulletin

One undergraduate, six Ph.D. students, and one old crusty “desert rat” of a professor share their perspectives on fieldwork. Fieldwork changed our professional lives dramatically for the better – a message that can never be emphasized enough to future students.

Realizing Where I Should Be: Notes On Reflexivity And Positionality In Fieldwork, Dylan M. Harris Jun 2024

Realizing Where I Should Be: Notes On Reflexivity And Positionality In Fieldwork, Dylan M. Harris

The Geographical Bulletin

An awareness of positionality, an attention to accountability, and a commitment to reflexivity are increasingly key elements to conducting geographical fieldwork. As such, the ‘field’ is not only a place where we go to conduct research. The ‘field’ is a place where people live, where histories are present, and where our actions are never objective. This short article discusses my experiences as an early career researcher as I came to terms with these realities during preliminary dissertation research in Nepal. As a result of several formative moments – including surviving a landslide – I slowly began to realize that issues …

A Narrow Escape From The Tajik Pamir, Stephen F. Cunha Jun 2024

A Narrow Escape From The Tajik Pamir, Stephen F. Cunha

The Geographical Bulletin

This essay documents surviving attempted murder and gunshot wounds incurred during 1992 geographical f ieldwork in the Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan. Our project goal was to assess the potential for a Pamir National Park in this Central Asian terra incognita where the southernmost Soviet Union met the unruly frontier with Afghanistan and China. Our personnel included geographers and government officials from the Soviet Academy of Sciences, Tajik Academy of Sciences, Goscomproda (Tajik Ministry of Environment), and the NGO Tajik Socio-Ecological Union. The initial 1991 field season involved living in Moscow through the coup attempt that ultimately disbanded the Soviet Union. …

Beneficial Plant-Microbe Interactions And Stress Tolerance In Maize, Saroj Burlakoti, Ananta R. Devkota, Shital Poudyal, Amita Kaundal Jun 2024

Beneficial Plant-Microbe Interactions And Stress Tolerance In Maize, Saroj Burlakoti, Ananta R. Devkota, Shital Poudyal, Amita Kaundal

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

Beneficial microbes are crucial for improving crop adaptation and growth under various stresses. They enhance nutrient uptake, improve plant immune responses, and help plants tolerate stresses like drought, salinity, and heat. The yield potential of any crop is significantly influenced by its associated microbiomes and their potential to improve growth under different stressful environments. Therefore, it is crucial and exciting to understand the mechanisms of plant-microbe interactions. Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the primary staple foods worldwide, in addition to wheat and rice. Maize is also an industrial crop globally, contributing 83% of its production for …

Quantitative Trait Loci Mapping Provides Insights Into The Genetic Regulation Of Dendritic Cell Numbers In Mouse Tissues., Thiago Y Oliveira, Julia Merkenschlager, Thomas Eisenreich, Juliana Bortolatto, Kai-Hui Yao, Daniel M Gatti, Gary Churchill, Michel C Nussenzweig, Gaëlle Breton

Faculty Research 2024

To explore the influence of genetics on homeostatic regulation of dendritic cell (DC) numbers, we present a screen of DCs and their progenitors in lymphoid and non-lymphoid tissues in Collaborative Cross (CC) and Diversity Outbred (DO) mice. We report 30 and 71 loci with logarithm of the odds (LOD) scores >8.18 and ranging from 6.67 to 8.19, respectively. The analysis reveals the highly polygenic and pleiotropic architecture of this complex trait, including many of the previously identified genetic regulators of DC development and maturation. Two SNPs in genes potentially underlying variation in DC homeostasis, a splice variant in Gramd4 (rs235532740) …

Lifestyle Eco-Influencers Advertising: Is Engagement Driven By Content Or Fandom?, Bárbara Mercedes Castillo Abdul Hadi, Luis Miguel Romero Rodríguez, Carlos Fernández-Rodríguez

Artículos científicos

This research examines the main common characteristics among the contents of five eco- -influencer accounts from different Western countries. A quantitative content analysis was performed on 187 Instagram posts published by eco-influencers from the United Kingdom, United States, Belgium, Spain, and Peru. The topics that eco-influencers deal with the most are promoting veganism, spirituality, environmental and political claims, product advertising (their own and third-party), and personal life, generating the most interactions in the accounts. Carousels win on engagement for eco-influencers on Instagram despite videos being sponsors’ favorite format. Both sponsored content and sponsors themselves are well-received, with over half of …

Factors Associated With Functioning In Older Black Adults, Katrail D. Davis Jun 2024

Factors Associated With Functioning In Older Black Adults, Katrail D. Davis

LSU Master's Theses

Activities of daily living can be simple tasks such as bathing, showering, toileting or as complex as managing finances, driving, and preparing meals. Independence in everyday functioning has been associated with successful aging and declines in functioning may be indicative of pathological cognitive decline. Social determinants of health, like economic status and access to health care, also play a role in everyday functioning. Understanding these factors are of particular importance for older Black adults who have had long-standing disparate access to care, education, and treatments. The current study aimed to evaluate social determinants of health, more specifically social engagement, as …

Feasibility Of Eeg Based Detection Of Ischemic Stroke: Studies In A Simple Computational Model, Charles F. Babbs Jun 2024

Feasibility Of Eeg Based Detection Of Ischemic Stroke: Studies In A Simple Computational Model, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers

Objective: To explore quantitatively, using streamlined mathematics, how transmembrane potential differences across cell bodies of individual cortical neurons could act to produce the skin surface potentials of the electroencephalogram (EEG), and how ischemic stroke might be detected using EEGs in prehospital settings. Methods: From fundamental principles of electrostatics, anatomy, and physiology, one can characterize the strength of apparent dipoles created during activation of the cell bodies of individual cortical neurons. The transient dipole strength in a cortical neuron depends upon the size and surface area of its cell body, its capacitance, and the difference in transmembrane electrical potentials appearing across …

Innate And Adaptive Immune Responses That Control Lymph-Borne Viruses In The Draining Lymph Node, Carolina R. Melo-Silva, Luis J. Sigal Jun 2024

Innate And Adaptive Immune Responses That Control Lymph-Borne Viruses In The Draining Lymph Node, Carolina R. Melo-Silva, Luis J. Sigal

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

The interstitial fluids in tissues are constantly drained into the lymph nodes (LNs) as lymph through afferent lymphatic vessels and from LNs into the blood through efferent lymphatics. LNs are strategically positioned and have the appropriate cellular composition to serve as sites of adaptive immune initiation against invading pathogens. However, for lymph-borne viruses, which disseminate from the entry site to other tissues through the lymphatic system, immune cells in the draining LN (dLN) also play critical roles in curbing systemic viral dissemination during primary and secondary infections. Lymph-borne viruses in tissues can be transported to dLNs as free virions in …

Learning By Evaluating: An Exploration Of Optimizing Design-Based Instruction, Scott Thorne, Nathan Mentzer, Greg J. Strimel, Scott R. Bartholomew, Jason A. Ware Jun 2024

Learning By Evaluating: An Exploration Of Optimizing Design-Based Instruction, Scott Thorne, Nathan Mentzer, Greg J. Strimel, Scott R. Bartholomew, Jason A. Ware

School of Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

Learning by Evaluating (LbE) is an instructional approach that involves students making comparative judgements of pairs of artifacts, such as student work, portfolios, prototypes, or curated images related to a topic of instruction to enhance critical thinking and decision-making skills. Situated as a primer for learning, the efficacy of LbE stems from actively engaging students in the evaluation process, scaffolding their learning, fostering self-reflection in decision-making, and facilitating the transfer of acquired skills and concepts to academic contexts and project work. However, there is an opportunity to gain deeper insights into classroom integration of LbE and the factors that may …
