Beyond Reform: Food Sovereignty And The Future Of Global Food Systems, Smita Narula
Beyond Reform: Food Sovereignty And The Future Of Global Food Systems, Smita Narula
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
We live in a deeply destructive food system, and the need for alternatives is clear. Yet state and corporate actors, beholden to an extractive, industrial model of food production, continue to push for incremental reforms instead of transformative action. In response, food sovereignty movements are charting a normative path in international human rights law to secure peasants' rights and promote more sustainable and just alternatives to our industrial food system. Against the backdrop of the political economy of industrial agriculture, this Article compares mainstream approaches to food systems reform with transformative alternatives rooted in food sovereignty. It explores two key …

Filling The Enforcement Gap: Alternative Dispute Resolution As An Approach To Solving "Copyright" Disputes For Ai-Generated Content, Aly Rezek
Journal of Dispute Resolution
On August 12, 2019, the United States Copyright Office (“the Copyright Office”) sent Stephen Thaler a rejection letter stating it would not issue him federal copyright protection for artwork generated by a computer program he owned. After countless appeals to the Copyright Office and the Federal District Court under various legal theories, one thing was made clear: The U.S. Copyright system would not protect works created by non-human authors. This principle presents a problem. Artificial intelligence (“AI”) is a rapidly developing tool in business and a rapidly developing issue in the law. Courts have routinely held that to be copyrightable, …

Symbols For Schools: Types Of School Nicknames, How They Are Formed, And Implications For Leaders, Andrew Hudacs
Journal of Educational Leadership in Action
School nicknames are powerful symbols representing the shared values and culture of their respective communities. This descriptive mixed method-study attempts to illuminate patterns in current school nicknames and examine ways that school leaders and communities approach changes to their nicknames. Nicknames from 1108 postsecondary schools were identified and analyzed with mixed methods to form a classification system that was then used to measure relationships between nicknames and school characteristics. A thematic text analysis of institutional nickname descriptions shows that the origins of nicknames vary, both in their inspirations (from presidential committees to sports journalists) and their process of selection (from …

Perioperative Cannabis Use In Bariatric Patients: A Review Of Outcomes And Proposed Clinical Pathway For Management, Meghan H. Maceyko, Marc Neff, Jonathan Halevy, Marguerite Dunham
Jefferson Health - New Jersey Papers
Legalization of marijuana has led to increased prevalence of medical and recreational cannabis use, underscoring the importance for anesthesiologists, surgeons, and perioperative physicians to understand the effects of this drug in patient care. Bariatric surgical patients represent a unique target population to understand peri-operative cannabis use and its effects as these patients undergo an extensive preoperative psychological and nutritional evaluation. Standardized guidelines on cannabis use in bariatric surgery are lacking and many clinicians remain uncertain on how to handle cannabis use in the peri-operative period. Here, we summarize the data on cannabis use in bariatric patients, specifically exploring anesthetic considerations, …

The migratory and matrix-invading capacities of the cumulus–oocyte complex have been shown to be important for the ovulatory process. In metastatic cancers, these capacities are due to increased expression of proteases, however, there is limited information on protease expression in the cumulus–oocyte complexes. The present study examined cumulus–oocyte complex expression of plasmins, matrix metalloproteases, and A Disintegrin and Metalloproteinase with Thrombospondin Motifs family members in the rat and human. In the rat, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) administration increased cumulus–oocyte complex expression of Mmp2, Mmp9, Mmp13, Mmp14, Mmp16, Adamts1, and the protease inhibitors Timp1, Timp3, and Serpine1 by 8–12 h. INTRODUCTION: Genome-wide association studies have identified over 70 genetic loci associated with late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD), but few candidate polymorphisms have been functionally assessed for disease relevance and mechanism of action.
METHODS: Candidate genetic risk variants were informatically prioritized and individually engineered into a LOAD-sensitized mouse model that carries the AD risk variants APOE ε4/ε4 and Trem2*R47H. The potential disease relevance of each model was assessed by comparing brain transcriptomes measured with the Nanostring Mouse AD Panel at 4 and 12 months of age with human study cohorts.
RESULTS: We created new models for 11 coding and loss-of-function risk variants. …

Dissertations
Integrated Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) education allows students to build conceptual understanding by connecting material to other content areas and real-world contexts. Strong conceptual understanding allows students to move beyond factual recall and instead synthesize and transfer their knowledge to new applications. In high school biology, students need to develop a strong conceptual understanding of genetic inheritance in the context of dihybrid inheritance. This qualitative case study was designed to understand the influence of an integrated STEM approach on student conceptual understanding of genetic dihybrid inheritance. The situated STEM learning and conceptual change theoretical frameworks guided the research design …

Sage Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) is an obligate species that depends on sagebrush to survive and serves as an indicator species and umbrella species for the sagebrush ecosystem. The sagebrush ecosystem has been declining rapidly therefore understanding the impacts on Sage Grouse could aid researchers and land managers in best practices to protect the long-term viability of the species, the ecosystem, and 350 other species that depend on it, including humans. One way to understand these impacts is through dietary indicators, such as the availability of preferred forage plants. In the past, this has been done by direct observation, …

Water contamination resulting from coal spills is one of the largest environmental problems affecting communities in the Appalachia Region of the United States. This coal slurry contains potentially toxic substances, such as hydrocarbons, heavy metals, and coal cleaning chemicals, and its leakage into water bodies (lakes, rivers, and aquifers) can lead to adverse health effects not only for freshwater bodies and plant life but also for humans. This study focused on two major experiments. The first experiment involved the use of biochar to create a biochar–polysulfone (BC-PSf) flat-sheet multifunctional membrane to remove organic contaminants, and the other major experiment compared …

Gendered divisions of labor are a feature of every known contemporary hunter-gatherer (forager) society. While gender roles are certainly flexible, and prominent and well-studied cases of female hunting do exist, it is more often men who hunt. A new study (Anderson et al., 2023) surveyed ethnographically known foragers and found that women hunt in 79% of foraging societies, with big-game hunting occurring in 33%. Based on this single type of labor, which is one among dozens performed in foraging societies, the authors question the existence of gendered division of labor altogether. As a diverse group of hunter-gatherer experts, we find …

The Pcdhg gene cluster encodes 22 γ-Protocadherin (γ-Pcdh) cell adhesion molecules that critically regulate multiple aspects of neural development, including neuronal survival, dendritic and axonal arborization, and synapse formation and maturation. Each γ-Pcdh isoform has unique protein domains—a homophilically interact- ing extracellular domain and a juxtamembrane cytoplasmic domain—as well as a C-terminal cytoplasmic domain shared by all isoforms. The extent to which isoform-specific versus shared domains regulate distinct γ-Pcdh functions remains incompletely understood. Our previous in vitro studies identified protein kinase C (PKC) phosphorylation of a serine residue within a shared C-terminal motif as a mechanism through which γ-Pcdh promotion …

Barley Grass And Its Management In Crops, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia
Grains and other field crops factsheets
Barley grass is a common name for Hordeum glaucum and H. leporinum. Barley grass is a major crop weeds species because the seed is readily dispersed, it is renowned for rapidly germinating in autumn, and post-emergent herbicide control options are limited. It can also act as an alternate host for cereal diseases and can develop resistance to herbicides.
The rapid germination of the species after rainfall gives barley grass the potential to act as a green bridge for cereal root rot diseases

Alabama Libraries
Since 2021, the American Library Association has reported a marked increase in the number of book challenges in the United States. Public and school libraries, where most of these attempts at censorship occur, frequently celebrate Banned Books Week each fall, to raise awareness about the ongoing threat to intellectual freedom. College and university libraries face fewer book challenges and might not celebrate Banned Books Week; however, given the rise in number and visibility of conversations surrounding book banning, hosting events on the week’s theme offers academic libraries a way to engage their students thoughtfully in civic conversations. This practical article …

The Relationship Between Communication Styles And Nonverbal Communication Level: A Study On Tourist Guides, Melike Sak, Ali Turan Bayram, Gül Erkol Bayram, Anuj Kumar, Shakeel Basheer
Journal of Mediterranean Tourism Research
Communication, a fundamental tool in human interaction, encompasses a variety of methods and techniques. One such method, non-verbal communication, is a form of expression that transcends words or language. Instead, it relies on a spectrum of non-verbal cues, such as body language, eye contact, physical posture, gestures, and facial expressions, to convey meaning. In the context of tourist guiding, non-verbal communication is a key element. The non-verbal communication skills of tourist guides are pivotal in shaping the quality of the tour experience. By employing non-verbal communication techniques, guides can significantly enhance the quality of interaction with tourists, thereby optimizing communication …
