Impact Of Site Rehabilitation On Local Insect And Pollinator Populations: A Case Study Of Newly Restored Mining Lands In Butte, Montana, Nicholas Rasschaert
Impact Of Site Rehabilitation On Local Insect And Pollinator Populations: A Case Study Of Newly Restored Mining Lands In Butte, Montana, Nicholas Rasschaert
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Pollinators play a critical role in ecosystem functionality, with 80% of the world's plant species depending on animal-mediated pollination. Given that habitat loss is a primary threat to pollinators and many species are becoming threatened in the US, restoration efforts must focus not only on plant communities but also on their pollinating animal counterparts. Including pollinator-focused strategies in rehabilitation plans is crucial, particularly in areas that have experienced significant environmental degradation, such as post-industrial and mining landscapes. This study assessed insect and plant diversity across eight sites within the Silver Bow Creek/Butte Area Superfund site, located in southwestern Montana. The …

Translational Potential Of Mouse Models Of Human Metabolic Disease, I Sadaf Farooqi, Yong Xu
Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications
Obesity causes significant morbidity and mortality globally. Research in the last three decades has delivered a step-change in our understanding of the fundamental mechanisms that regulate energy homeostasis, building on foundational discoveries in mouse models of metabolic disease. However, not all findings made in rodents have translated to humans, hampering drug discovery in this field. Here, we review how studies in mice and humans have informed our current framework for understanding energy homeostasis, discuss their challenges and limitations, and offer a perspective on how human studies may play an increasingly important role in the discovery of disease mechanisms and identification …

Jefferson Institute of Molecular Medicine Papers and Presentations
Craniometaphyseal dysplasia (CMD) is a rare genetic bone disorder, characterized by progressive thickening of craniofacial bones and flared metaphyses of long bones. Craniofacial hyperostosis leads to the obstruction of neural foramina and neurological symptoms such as facial palsy, blindness, deafness, or severe headache. Mutations in ANKH (mouse ortholog ANK), a transporter of small molecules such as citrate and ATP, are responsible for autosomal dominant CMD. Knock-in (KI) mice carrying an ANKF377del mutation (AnkKI/KI) replicate many features of human CMD. Pyrophosphate (PPi) levels in plasma are significantly reduced in AnkKI/KI mice. PPi is a potent inhibitor of …

Exploring The Role Of Rb1 In Cellular Differentiation Using Patient-Derived Stem Cells, Ambily Vincent
Exploring The Role Of Rb1 In Cellular Differentiation Using Patient-Derived Stem Cells, Ambily Vincent
Theses and Dissertations
The Retinoblastoma (RB1) gene, predominantly recognized as a tumour suppressor, plays a crucial role in early growth and development. Mice lacking the retinoblastoma gene do not survive and exhibit defects in the differentiation of various tissues, underscoring its involvement in cellular differentiation. This suggests that the functions of the RB1 gene extend beyond its role as a tumour suppressor, encompassing cell cycle regulation, maintenance of genomic stability, cellular senescence, and cellular differentiation.
While the tumour suppressor function of the RB1 has been extensively studied, its role in cellular differentiation remains incompletely understood. Existing literature, primarily based on animal models, has …

Exploring The Roles Of Physiology And Phylogeny In Novel Signal Evolution, Mia E. Phillips
Exploring The Roles Of Physiology And Phylogeny In Novel Signal Evolution, Mia E. Phillips
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
In animal communication, signal phenotypes are shaped by a combination of selective
forces pushing for improved transmission, efficiency, and detection, and limited by
developmental constraints in signal production and reception abilities (Morton 1975; Guilford &
Dawkins 1991; Endler 1992; Davranoglou et al. 2023). These opposing forces have resulted in
communication strategies that are broadly diverse yet similar among closely related species. We
expect to see gradual changes in signal phenotypes across different clades (Harvey & Pagel
1991). Sometimes, though, the communication strategies of closely related taxa are drastically
different (Ligon et al. 2018), indicating that selection must have overcome the …
The “Horizontal Separation Of Powers” After National Pork Producers Council V. Ross, Bradley W. Joondeph
The “Horizontal Separation Of Powers” After National Pork Producers Council V. Ross, Bradley W. Joondeph
San Diego Law Review
The Supreme Court’s decision in National Pork Producers Council v. Ross (NPPC) held that California’s Proposition 12—which forbids the sale of pork in the state derived from pigs born of sows confined “in a cruel manner”—does not violate the dormant Commerce Clause. Specifically, the Court held that the law neither regulates “extraterritorially” (despite the fact that nearly all the pork sold in California is produced in other states) nor imposes an undue burden on interstate commerce. While the Court’s rationale in NPPC was somewhat fractured, the decision nonetheless established some important points. First, a state law’s out-of-state “practical …

Hypothalamic neural circuits regulate instinctive behaviors such as food seeking, the fight/flight response, socialization, and maternal care. Here, we identified microdeletions on chromosome Xq23 disrupting the brain-expressed transient receptor potential (TRP) channel 5 (TRPC5). This family of channels detects sensory stimuli and converts them into electrical signals interpretable by the brain. Male TRPC5 deletion carriers exhibited food seeking, obesity, anxiety, and autism, which were recapitulated in knockin male mice harboring a human loss-of-function TRPC5 mutation. Women carrying TRPC5 deletions had severe postpartum depression. As mothers, female knockin mice exhibited anhedonia and depression-like behavior with impaired care of offspring. Deletion of …

Economics is the study of the allocation of scarce resources to meet human wants and needs and has a critical role to play in addressing challenges related to environmental sustainability, community resilience, and food security. In the context of aquaculture, the key to such a discussion is understanding the linkages of aquaculture farming businesses with other economic sectors and how policy decisions that affect aquaculture result in economic ripples throughout local, regional, and national economies. The only previous national estimates of the economic contributions of U.S. aquaculture are nearly 30 years old. The current study was based on comprehensive data …
Thinking Blue / Writing Red: Marxism And The (Post)Human, Stephen C. Tumino
Thinking Blue / Writing Red: Marxism And The (Post)Human, Stephen C. Tumino
Publications and Research
Thinking Blue/Writing Red interrogates contemporary culture across a range of texts, from the pandemic (‘Covid’ and ‘Trump Speak’) to high theory (Melville's narratives) and popular culture (Beyoncé's ‘Formation’ and Super Bowl performance, Twin Peaks , metamodern ‘cli-fi’ films). Inspired by Derrida’s idea of the secret, Tumino examines the significance of social movements (Black Lives Matter, Occupy, alter-globalization) and naïve art (Darger, Ryden) to argue that these texts speak of the secrets that capitalism cannot speak. Contending that the cultural surfaces narrate only the ‘nonsecret,’ that to see the social logic of the culture one must dig into what Bruno Latour …

Over 310,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2024, making it the most commonly diagnosed cancer in United States women. Advancements in treatment options such as chemotherapy and radiation have resulted in a 5-year survival rate of 91%. With nearly 4.1 million breast cancer survivors living in the United States today, there is a need for a better understanding of the long-term side effects of these treatments and the impact these may have on the quality of life for these survivors. Reported in up to 78% of cancer patients who received chemotherapy, chemotherapy induced cognitive impairment (CICI), …
The Importance Of Experience: Supporting Pupils’ Creative Writing About The Natural World, Christopher Hanley, David Cooper, Jennifer Rowntree
The Importance Of Experience: Supporting Pupils’ Creative Writing About The Natural World, Christopher Hanley, David Cooper, Jennifer Rowntree
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
The first part of this article considers the challenge of supporting pupils to write creatively about the natural world. It examines a text by a gifted young writer: Diary of a Young Naturalist by Dara McAnulty. It asks what the challenges might be for pupils who maybe motivated to model their writing on McAnulty’s, but have limited experience of the natural world. Drawing on the scholarly work of John Dixon, Robert Eaglestone and others, the article highlights the importance of pupil experience in the formation of their writerly voice, thereby emphasising the need for writing pedagogies that deepen and enrich …
Using Manipulatives As Learning Interventions To Teach Introductory Chemistry Content In The Secondary Classroom And Beyond, John Kenneth Kennon
Using Manipulatives As Learning Interventions To Teach Introductory Chemistry Content In The Secondary Classroom And Beyond, John Kenneth Kennon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Use of manipulatives to explore concepts qualitatively and quantitatively was investigated in this study. Particle diagrams, enthalpy, VSEPR, and stoichiometry; four classes of students were divided into two groups constituting test group and control group. Control groups received traditional pedagogy (Lewis diagrams) while test groups used manipulatives. Shapiro-Wilks, class means, Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Mann-Whitney U tests, and item-by-item analyses were employed to quantify performance. Particle diagram results suggested that using modeling improves student learning outcomes based on means and Mann-Whitney U-test p-value. Enthalpy results indicated a larger mean for the test group than the control group, but no statistical difference between score …
A Business Model For Communication Design Enterprises (Paper), Con Kennedy
A Business Model For Communication Design Enterprises (Paper), Con Kennedy
Academic Articles
Several international reports and studies indicate that the Communication Design sector has a skill deficit in entrepreneurship and business management, and a greater understanding of these topics is needed. Some authors advocate applying existing business models for design enterprises. However, the skill deficit prevails. It is worth noting that these reports discuss the entrepreneurship deficit in general terms without an explanation of the causes of this deficit or how to remedy the issue. Therefore, this paper explores the development of a Business Model specific for Design Entrepreneurs for deployment in Communication Design enterprises. A theoretical framework for a specific business …

Fewer than 200 proteins are targeted by cancer drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). We integrate Clinical Proteomic Tumor Analysis Consortium (CPTAC) proteogenomics data from 1,043 patients across 10 cancer types with additional public datasets to identify potential therapeutic targets. Pan-cancer analysis of 2,863 druggable proteins reveals a wide abundance range and identifies biological factors that affect mRNA-protein correlation. Integration of proteomic data from tumors and genetic screen data from cell lines identifies protein overexpression- or hyperactivation-driven druggable dependencies, enabling accurate predictions of effective drug targets. Proteogenomic identification of synthetic lethality provides a strategy to target tumor …
The Runaway Train Of Mandated Reporting, Katie Louras
The Runaway Train Of Mandated Reporting, Katie Louras
San Diego Law Review
Mandated reporting was broadly enacted in the 1960s with good intentions and in a very different historical context regarding societal knowledge and recognition of child abuse. It has since expanded drastically regarding who must report and what must be reported. In the same sixty years, no research has demonstrated its efficacy. However, research does suggest that mandated reporting creates independent harms concentrated within low-income and minority communities. On top of the potential trauma of an investigation stemming from a report, mandated reporting also serves to isolate families, cutting them off from community support. Mandated reporters are most commonly those in …
Origin, Regulation, And Function Of Bone Marrow Adipose Tissue And Implications For Bone Health, Xiao Zhang
Origin, Regulation, And Function Of Bone Marrow Adipose Tissue And Implications For Bone Health, Xiao Zhang
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT) is a unique fat depot located within the skeletal system that takes up a large portion of the total bone marrow volume and contains tremendous amounts of energy that can be potentially utilized to fuel the body. However, largely attributed to its strong resistance to lipolytic stimuli and its persistent accumulation in various physiological and pathological conditions, the exact function of BMAT within the bone and how it is regulated throughout the body remains largely unclear. This dissertation sought to better understand the unique role of BMAT within the bone marrow niche by first reviewing …

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies indicate that eosinophils are recruited into the allograft following orthotopic liver transplantation and protect from ischaemia reperfusion (IR) injury. In the current studies, we aim to explore whether their protective function could outlast during liver repair.
DESIGN: Eosinophil-deficient mice and adoptive transfer of bone marrow-derived eosinophils (bmEos) were employed to investigate the effects of eosinophils on tissue repair and regeneration after hepatic IR injury. Aside from exogenous cytokine or neutralising antibody treatments, mechanistic studies made use of a panel of mouse models of eosinophil-specific IL-4/IL-13-deletion, cell-specific IL-4rα-deletion in liver macrophages and hepatocytes and macrophage-specific deletion of heparin-binding …
Integrated Reference Single-Cell Rna Seq Atlas Of Healthy Human Female Tissues To Expand The Computational Drug Target Discovery Approaches For Female-Directed Non-Hormonal Contraceptives, Zhanel Nugmanova
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
The ovary is vital for fertility and the maintenance of endocrine homeostasis. It contains heterogeneous cell populations, including oocyte, granulosa, stromal, endothelial, smooth muscle, and immune cell types. Creating a harmonized dataset that enables cross-tissue comparisons, including the ovary, is essential for identifying genes specific to ovarian cell types and for facilitating drug discovery for contraception and fertility purposes. There are very few resources that allow for the assessment of the expression of potential gene targets across human and mouse tissues for female-directed non-hormonal contraceptives. This is because most of these publicly available datasets are from post-menopausal women. Through our …

Prolonged or chronic social isolation has pronounced effects on animals, ranging from altered stress responses, increased anxiety and aggressive behaviour, and even increased mortality. The effects of shorter periods of isolation are much less well researched; however, short periods of isolation are used routinely for testing animal behaviour and physiology. Here, we studied how a 3 h period of isolation from a cagemate affected neural gene expression in three brain regions that contain important components of the social decision-making network, the hypothalamus, the nucleus taeniae of the amygdala, and the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, using a gregarious bird …

Systemic Activation Of The Axon Degeneration Executioner Sarm1 Triggers Acute Hyperglycemia, Lillian Spatz
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Communication between the nervous system and metabolic tissues directs whole body homeostasis. It is well understood that peripheral tissues respond to neural stimulation or inhibition to modulate energy usage and storage, hormone release, and stress pathways, but the neuroendocrine circuits that drive these outcomes remain ill-defined. Our lab identified sterile alpha and TIR motif containing 1 (SARM1) as the central executioner of axon degeneration in injury and disease models. We found that SARM1 is activated by an elevated NMN/NAD+ ratio and that nicotinamide analogs, including 3-AP and vacor, are converted to NMN-like intermediates that directly bind to SARM1, mimicking the …
