Gesture-Driven Attribute Transfer For Visual Assets Using Generative Artificial Intelligence, Manasa Babu
Defensive Publications Series
This disclosure describes techniques that use generative artificial intelligence (gen-AI) to enable the rapid merging of visual assets using drag/pinch gestures to create an output visual that draws on individual attributes of the constituent visual assets. The techniques, effectively a design paradigm, enable non-technical users with little or no design skills to combine a reference visual (asset) with an original asset to create a new, merged asset. The techniques can accelerate productivity, reduce design time, increase design possibilities, increase decision-making speed, and democratize the design and management of visual assets. Example use cases include user interface design, photo editing, icon …

A twelve-year-old female Shih Tzu was presented for investigation and treatment of a vaginal mass. Partial resection, intracavitary fluid drainage and mucosal lining curettage had been made in the previous laparotomy. Computed tomography (CT) and perioperative gross appearance revealed a large vaginal cyst extended into the pelvic canal that was adhering to the bladder trigone, both ureters, the urethra and the descending colon. The mass was resected completely. The dog recovered uneventfully. To the author’s knowledge, this is the first report of a canine intra-abdominal vaginal mass that was preoperatively evaluated using CT and the histological result was most consistent …

Tick-borne diseases caused by the Babesia canis (B. canis) and Ehrlichia canis (E. canis), have been increasing recently in clinical veterinary. In veterinary clinics, complete blood counts (CBCs) are commonly analyzed using automated flow cytometric analyzers like the Mindray BC-5000 Vet hematology analyzer. In this study, the predictive significance of the diagnostic blood parasites B. canis and E. canis obtained from hematological parameter were measured. Red blood cell (RBC) and platelet parameters firstly discriminated the canine blood parasites infection from those healthy dogs. The diagnostic performance of absolute number of monocytes between B. canis and E. …

A 1-year-old intact male ragdoll weighing 5.9 kg was presented for general wellness examination and castration. Upon physical examination, neither testes could be palpated in the scrotum. Blood test results (complete blood cell count, serum biochemistry and electrolyte analysis) showed no remarkable findings. Radiographic and ultrasound examination did not detect the right kidney and testis in the abdominal cavity. However, we were unable to visualize the right kidney and testis in the abdominal cavity. An exploratory laparotomy for cryptorchidism revealed that although the left testis was intact, there was no right kidney, ureter and ipsilateral testis in the abdominal cavity. …

Remote sensing tools, along with Global Navigation Satellite System cattle collars and digital soil maps, may help elucidate spatiotemporal relationships among soils, terrain, forages, and animals. However, standard computational procedures preclude systems-level evaluations across this continuum due to data inoperability and processing limitations. Deep learning, a subset of neural network, may elucidate efficiency of livestock production and linkages within the livestock-grazing environment. Consequently, we applied deep learning to environmental remote sensing data to (1) develop predictive models for yield and forage nutrition based on vegetation indices and (2) at a pixel-level (per 55 m2), identify how grazing is …

Modern sequencing technology enables the systematic detection of complex structural variation (SV) across genomes. However, extensive DNA rearrangements arising through a series of mutations, a phenomenon we refer to as serial SV (sSV), remain underexplored, posing a challenge for SV discovery. Here, we present NAHRwhals ( https://github.com/WHops/NAHRwhals ), a method to infer repeat-mediated series of SVs in long-read genomic assemblies. Applying NAHRwhals to haplotype-resolved human genomes from 28 individuals reveals 37 sSV loci of various length and complexity. These sSVs explain otherwise cryptic variation in medically relevant regions such as the TPSAB1 gene, 8p23.1, 22q11 and Sotos syndrome regions. Comparisons …

Highly Accurate And Precise Determination Of Mouse Mass Using Computer Vision, Malachy Guzman, Brian Q Geuther, Gautam S Sabnis, Vivek Kumar
Faculty Research 2024
Changes in body mass are key indicators of health in humans and animals and are routinely monitored in animal husbandry and preclinical studies. In rodent studies, the current method of manually weighing the animal on a balance causes at least two issues. First, directly handling the animal induces stress, possibly confounding studies. Second, these data are static, limiting continuous assessment and obscuring rapid changes. A non-invasive, continuous method of monitoring animal mass would have utility in multiple biomedical research areas. We combine computer vision with statistical modeling to demonstrate the feasibility of deter- mining mouse body mass by using video …

Research shows that perceived naturalness can bias beliefs about the positivity of items such as food, human talent, and vaccines. Yet, this research focuses on self-reports, which leaves open the implications it has for behavior. In four studies (N = 492), this research team tested if perceived naturalness impacts trivial and meaningful behaviors. Participants were asked to consume a purported natural/synthetic performance drink (Study 1), test a purported natural/synthetic drug that would be injected (Study 2), eat chocolate containing a purported natural/synthetic cocoa described as causing stomach discomfort (Study 3), or choose a sticker purportedly made with natural/synthetic ink …

Mountain environments with snow avalanche hazard cover about 6% of Earth’s land area and occur on all continents. Whereas human risks associated with avalanche hazard have been widely studied, little is known about how avalanche activity affects population dynamics in mountain wildlife. Globally, 32 species of mountain ungulates across 70 countries occupy avalanche-prone terrain. Avalanches comprise the leading cause of mortality in coastal Alaskan mountain goats (mean = 36%, range = 23 - 65%, depending on area), and disproportionately remove prime-aged individuals from populations. The implications of such rates and patterns of mortality on population growth rate are likely to …

BACKGROUND: Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a rare cerebrovascular disorder characterized by progressive steno-occlusive changes in the internal carotid arteries, leading to an abnormal vascular network. Hypertension is prevalent among MMD patients, raising concerns about its impact on disease outcomes. This study aims to compare the clinical characteristics and outcomes of MMD patients with and without hypertension.
METHODS: We conducted a multicenter, retrospective study involving 598 MMD patients who underwent surgical revascularization across 13 academic institutions in North America. Patients were categorized into hypertensive (n=292) and non-hypertensive (n=306) cohorts. Propensity score matching (PSM) was performed to adjust for baseline differences.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminths infect an estimated 18% of the world's population, causing a significant health burden. Microscopy has been the primary tool for diagnosing eggs from fecal samples, but its sensitivity drops in low-prevalence settings. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) is slowly increasing in research and clinical settings. However, there is still no consensus on preferred qPCR targets.
METHODS: We aimed to compare soil-transmitted helminth (STH) DNA detection methods by testing naïve stool samples spiked with known quantities of STH eggs and larvae. DNA extracts from spiked samples were tested using independent quantitative realtime PCR (qPCR) assays targeting ribosomal …

Breathe Easy: The Potential Of Vitamins As Adjunct Therapy In Asthma Management, Elena Dike, Alex Zuo
Research Colloquium
Asthma, a prevalent respiratory disease, imposes a heavy burden on patients and healthcare systems. This research poster reviews recent findings on the potential of Vitamins A, C and E as adjunct therapies in asthma management. Comprehensive searches in PubMed, the NIH and Google Scholar identify multiple relevant publications and articles. Key results indicate that Vitamin A reduces Th2/Th17 levels and ROS, protecting the airway epithelium; Vitamin C decreases inflammatory cells and increases cGMP levels, reducing airway hyper-reactivity; and Vitamin E reduces eosinophils, basophils and neutrophils while also reducing ROS. These findings suggest that increasing intake of these vitamins, under medical …

Research Colloquium
In 2021, an estimated 38.4 million people were living with Human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV). While the introduction of antiretroviral therapies (ART) has dramatically improved the length of survival of individuals, peripheral neuropathy still affects as many as 50% of HIV-infected individuals. The most frequently reported clinical manifestation of HIV-associated peripheral neuropathy is distal sensory polyneuropathy (HIV-DSP), and it is one of the most common neurologic complications of HIV in the combination antiretroviral therapies (cART) era. Despite these gaps in knowledge, no small animal model mimics peripheral neuropathy in PLWH, and the ART era is available. The main goal here is …

Microglia In Post-Mortem Hippocampal Brain Tissue Of Male And Female Neonates After Hie, Kassandra M. Pulido, Angela N. Viaene, Amelia J. Eisch, Danielle G. Barber
Research Colloquium
Background: Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is the second-leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. There are sex differences in the pathophysiology of HIE, particularly in microglia, which are critical in the immune response. Prior work highlights microglial aggregation in the hippocampus of human infants as a marker for HIE, but it is unknown whether this differs by sex.
Aim: We compare the microglial response in post-mortem hippocampal tissue from male and female neonates diagnosed with HIE vs. Controls who expired from other causes.
Methods: Using a retrospective cohort design, we reviewed medical records of neonates with hippocampal tissue in the …
