Climate Change And Perceived Vulnerability: Gender, Heritage, And Religion Predict Risk Perception And Knowledge Of Climate Change In Hawaii, Kevin Showalter, David López-Carr, Daniel Ervin

The Geographical Bulletin

This study explores climate change related risk perception among residents of the ‘Big Island’ of Hawaii, an environmentally vulnerable region. Adapting established instruments, we investigated potential links among socio-demographic variables, risk perception, and perceived preparedness and knowledge, as they relate to climate change. Results reveal relationships between risk perceptions for climate change and gender, with females significantly more aware of the risks posed by climate change, but less prepared than men. Additionally, indigenous and native respondents felt that climate change events posed more risk and felt less prepared compared to non-indigenous. Results suggest that an understanding of how risk perceptions …

Deciphering Evolutionary Co-Option By Studying The Origin Of Self-Fertility In Caenorhabditis Nematodes, Jonathan P. Harbin Sep 2024

Deciphering Evolutionary Co-Option By Studying The Origin Of Self-Fertility In Caenorhabditis Nematodes, Jonathan P. Harbin

Theses and Dissertations

In my research, I examined the characteristics of male and female sex-determination mutants in C. nigoni and investigated the regulatory pathway they define. This work tested whether flexibility in the sex-determination pathway was a preexisting condition that favored the origin of self-fertility in Caenorhabditis. Furthermore, I developed an approach for using interspecies hybrid mutants to assess the robustness of the C. nigoni pathway. My findings showed that the C. nigoni pathway is highly robust and canalized, suggesting that changes leading to self-fertility must have involved the impairment of this canalization in the germ line, to allow eventual alteration of germ …

Aging Drives Cd8 T Cells To Functional Extremes: From Non-Specific Cytotoxicity To Tissue-Mediated Exhaustion, Irina Shchukina

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

CD8 T cells are a crucial component of the immune system, primarily responsible for executing the effector response against viral infections and cancer. Aging significantly impacts most immune cell types, with particularly dramatic changes observed in CD8 T cells. One major age-related difference is the marked decline in thymus activity, which leads to a substantial reduction in naive CD8 T cells and an increased abundance of memory CD8 T cells. Furthermore, recent work from our lab demonstrated that while young memory CD8 T cells are relatively homogeneous, memory CD8 T cells diverge into two subpopulations: PD1- memory CD8 T cells …

Adequate dosing of antimicrobials is paramount for treating infections in critically ill patients undergoing kidney replacement therapy; however, little is known about antimicrobial removal by sustained low-efficiency dialysis (SLED). The objective was to quantify the removal of cefepime, daptomycin, meropenem, piperacillin–tazobactam, and vancomycin in patients undergoing SLED. Adult patients ≥18 years with acute kidney injury (AKI) or end-stage kidney disease receiving one of the select antimicrobials and requiring SLED were included. Blood and dialysate flow rates were maintained at 250 and 100 mL/min, respectively. Simultaneous arterial and venous blood samples for the analysis of antibiotic concentrations were collected hourly for …

Synaptotagmin-9 In Mouse Retina, Chris S. Mesnard, Cassandra L. Hays, Lou E. Townsend, Cody L. Barta, Channabasavaiah B. Gurumurthy, Wallace B. Whoreson Sep 2024

Synaptotagmin-9 In Mouse Retina, Chris S. Mesnard, Cassandra L. Hays, Lou E. Townsend, Cody L. Barta, Channabasavaiah B. Gurumurthy, Wallace B. Whoreson

Neuroscience Faculty Publications

Synaptotagmin-9 (Syt9) is a Ca2+ sensor mediating fast synaptic release expressed in various parts of the brain. The presence and role of Syt9 in retina is unknown. We found evidence for Syt9 expression throughout the retina and created mice to conditionally eliminate Syt9 in a cre-dependent manner. We crossed Syt9fl/fl mice with Rho-iCre, HRGP-Cre, and CMV-Cre mice to generate mice in which Syt9 was eliminated from rods (rodSyt9CKO), cones (coneSyt9CKO), or whole animals (CMVSyt9). CMVSyt9 mice showed an increase in scotopic electroretinogram (ERG) b-waves evoked by bright flashes with no change in a-waves. Cone-driven photopic ERG b-waves were not significantly …

Nanofiber-Hydrogel Composite Scaffold Fabrication Methods For Peripheral Nerve Regeneration, Jacob Lee Carter Sep 2024

Nanofiber-Hydrogel Composite Scaffold Fabrication Methods For Peripheral Nerve Regeneration, Jacob Lee Carter

Theses and Dissertations

Nerve graft conduits (NGCs) are a rapidly advancing field for treating peripheral nerve injuries that aim to guide the growth of regenerating axons across damaged gaps. A more effective NGC can be manufactured by combining the use of nanofibers to act as guidewires within a 3-D hydrogel that imitates the extracellular matrix of nerve tissue. Several methods have been developed to embed aligned nanofibers in an ordered architecture within a hydrogel matrix. The first method involves layer-by-layer additive manufacturing to create NGCs with rows of polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers surrounded by a gelatin methacrylate (GelMe) hydrogel in a 3-D structure. A …

Generalized Encoding Of The Relative Subjective Value Of Cognitive Effort In The Dorsal Acc, Jennifer L Crawford, Rachel E Brough, Sarah A Eisenstein, Jonathan E Peelle, Todd S Braver

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Making choices about whether and when to engage cognitive effort are a common feature of everyday experience, with important consequences for academic, career, and health outcomes. Yet, despite their hypothesized importance, very little is understood about the underlying mechanisms that support this form of human cost-benefit decision-making. To investigate these mechanisms, we used the Cognitive Effort Discounting Paradigm (Cog-ED) during fMRI scanning to precisely quantify the neural encoding of varying cognitive effort demands relative to reward outcomes, within two distinct cognitive domains (working memory, speech comprehension). The findings provide strong evidence that the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) plays a …

INTRODUCTION: Children in low socioeconomic status (SES) communities are at higher risk of exposure to lead (Pb) and potentially more severe adverse outcomes from Pb exposures. While the factors encompassing SES are complex, low SES households often have less enriching home environments and parent-child interactions. This study investigated the extent to which environmental/behavioral factors (quality of maternal care and richness of the postnatal environment) may modify adverse effects from Pb exposure.

METHODS: Long-Evans female rats were randomly assigned to Control (no Pb), Early Postnatal (EPN: birth through weaning), or Perinatal (PERI: 14 days pre-mating through weaning) Pb exposure groups. From …
