Making (Virtual) Space For Disability Equity In Academia, Melissa Vosen Callens, Cali Anicha, Larry Napoleon Jr. Sep 2024

Making (Virtual) Space For Disability Equity In Academia, Melissa Vosen Callens, Cali Anicha, Larry Napoleon Jr.

Feminist Pedagogy

Virtual or hybrid options provide a way for marginalized faculty and staff to fully participate in their fields and on their campuses. As such, an equitable and pandemic-informed academic workplace should include fully accessible and well-resourced hybrid participation options for department meetings and events, office work, and classroom duties. In spring 2023, we created a work group on our campus to address the challenges of hybrid work and co-create campus-wide recommendations for hybrid workspaces. In this article, we share our findings and evidence-based recommendations, many of which draw on Universal Design for Learning, as well as offer suggestions on how …

Genome-Wide Identification, Phylogeny, And Pharmacological Analysis Of Date Palm Cyclic Nucleotide-Gated Ion Channel (Cngc) Gene Family In Response To Fungi, Mumtaz Ali̇ Saand, Marina Memon, Ameer Ahmed Mi̇rbahar, Qurban Ali̇ Magsi, Athar Abbas Babar, Sahib Abbas Ghanghro Sep 2024

Genome-Wide Identification, Phylogeny, And Pharmacological Analysis Of Date Palm Cyclic Nucleotide-Gated Ion Channel (Cngc) Gene Family In Response To Fungi, Mumtaz Ali̇ Saand, Marina Memon, Ameer Ahmed Mi̇rbahar, Qurban Ali̇ Magsi, Athar Abbas Babar, Sahib Abbas Ghanghro

Turkish Journal of Botany

Cyclic nucleotide-gated ion channel (CNGC) is one of the important calcium conducting channels and involves in numerous biological functions such as plant development, phytohormone responses, plant-pathogen interactions. Nevertheless, identification of CNGC gene family has yet not been carried out in date palm crop. In this study, genome-wide identification, and pharmacological analysis of date CNGCs was conducted against fungal pathogens. The 26 PdCNGC genes were identified by using extensive bioinformatics tools. Gene ontology (GO) analysis showed that signal transduction, transmembrane transport and ion binding proteins were at the top in biological process and molecular functions of PdCNGCs. Protein-protein interaction of PdCNGCs …

Fostering Resilience: Community Radio And Disaster Communication In Odisha, India, Manas Kumar Kanjilal, Kanchan K. Malik, Priya Kapoor

International & Global Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Local voices carry tremendous weight during natural disasters, yet the possibilities for employing participatory communicative practices for disaster management in India have not been fully explored. Effective community-centred disaster communication garners participation in disaster management processes that reduce vulnerabilities. This paper examines how various community-based organisations used community radio to enhance community engagement and the effectiveness of the disaster management processes in the eastern Indian state of Odisha. The research relies upon case studies of disaster communication practices of two community radio stations during the ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ Yaas, which made landfall in Odisha. It describes the conceptual shift …

Exploring Indigenous Climate Change Perceptions Through Tribal Talking Circles In The Colorado Plateau, Bayli Hanson, Roslynn Brain Mccann, Danielle Smiley Sep 2024

Exploring Indigenous Climate Change Perceptions Through Tribal Talking Circles In The Colorado Plateau, Bayli Hanson, Roslynn Brain Mccann, Danielle Smiley

Environment and Society Student Research

Marginalized communities, including Indigenous populations, experience climate change at a more extreme rate given where they live, despite their knowledge of and connection to the land. Due to this interconnection, there have been many negative impacts on cultural identities in correlation with climate change. For example, Indigenous communities that continue growing food, hunting and foraging on traditional lands now face increasingly limited resources due to changes in the land itself. To better understand Tribal experiences with our changing climate, this qualitative research study involved talking circles with Tribal members in the Colorado Plateau region of the United States. Specifically, our …

Background: In the research of coronary artery disease, the precise initial injury that starts the atherosclerotic cascade remains unidentified. Moreover, the mechanisms governing the progression or regression of coronary plaque are not yet fully understood. Based on the concept that the cardiovascular system is a network of pumps and pipes, could fluid mechanics principles and practices elucidate the question of atherosclerosis using flow dynamics images from a novel angiographic technique, focusing on antegrade and retrograde flows and their collisions in iliac and coronary arteries? Methods: From January 2023 to May 2024, coronary angiograms of all hemodynamically stable patients with stable …

The Semiotics Of Psychological States In International Players' Face Expressions During Qatar World Cup 2022, Mohammed Sami A-Assadi, Iman Mingher Obied Sep 2024

The Semiotics Of Psychological States In International Players' Face Expressions During Qatar World Cup 2022, Mohammed Sami A-Assadi, Iman Mingher Obied

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

This study aims at applying the social semiotic theory of universal micro-expressions in international players' facial expressions during Qatar World Cup 2022. The research analyzes four basic different facial expressions (sadness, happiness, anger and surprise) at the level of similarity and some other emotions at the level of difference. Relying on Ekman's model of semiotic micro-expressions of emotion, the findings of the data analysis show that the social semiotic approach is highly effective in showing how emotions in sports contexts can be revealed and indicated through facial expressions of players and how there are similarities and differences among them reflecting …

Because Of Who We Are: A Fresh Perspective On Calvin’S Doctrine Of The Image Of God And Human Dignity, Sam Neulsaem Ha Sep 2024

Because Of Who We Are: A Fresh Perspective On Calvin’S Doctrine Of The Image Of God And Human Dignity, Sam Neulsaem Ha

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Scholars have connected Calvin’s idea of the imago Dei with the modern concept of inherent human dignity. Others have emphasized how Calvin tried to use the image of God to promote the significance of human dignity without connecting it with political theories. These arguments may be justifiable to some extent. However, my concern is that these scholars focus on the image of God in others rather than on how it transforms individuals who live out its renewal. For Calvin, the restoration of the image of God by the Holy Spirit aimed at enabling a holy and righteous life. In his …

An Approach To Analyze Spatiotemporal Patterns Of Gene Expression At Single-Cell Resolution In Candida Albicans-Infected Mouse Tongues, Elena Lindemann-Perez, Diana L Rodríguez, J Christian Pérez

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Microbial gene expression measurements derived from infected organs are invaluable to understand pathogenesis. However, current methods are limited to "bulk" analyses that neglect microbial cell heterogeneity and the lesion's spatial architecture. Here, we report the use of hybridization chain reaction RNA fluorescence in situ hybridization (HCR RNA-FISH) to visualize and quantify Candida albicans transcripts at single-cell resolution in tongues of infected mice. The method is compatible with fixed-frozen and formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues. We document cell-to-cell variation and intriguing spatiotemporal expression patterns for C. albicans mRNAs that encode products implicated in oral candidiasis. The approach provides a spatial dimension to gene …
