Simultaneous Determination Of Lead And Cadmium In Environmental Samples Using Zinc-Diethyldithiocarbamates, Bashar Qasim
Baghdad Science Journal
Toxic metals have a serious impact on the ecological environment. The determination of these metal concentrations provides more information about their toxicity. In this study, a simple, rapid and selective spectrophotometric method with solid phase extraction method has been described for the simultaneous determination of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in environmental samples using a freshly precipitated zinc-diethyldithiocarbamate (Zn-(DDTC)2) as a reagent. The pre-concentration of Pb and Cd contents was performed according to solid phase extraction process. The determination of Pb+2 and Cd+2 based on the replacement of Zn+2 from the freshly precipitated Zn-(DDTC)2 by Pb+2 and Cd+2 in aqueous …

Realtime And Noninvasive Assessment Of Endotracheal Tube Displacement Using Near-Infrared And Visible Cameras, Tongtong Lu, Pawjai Khampang, Ahmed Beydoun, Rebecca Rodhe, Wenzhou Hong, Joseph E. Kerschner, Bing Yu
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Endotracheal tube (ETT) intubation is a medical procedure routinely used for achieving mechanical ventilation in critically ill patients. Appropriate ETT placement is crucial as undetected tube migration may cause multiple complications or even fatalities. Therefore, prompt detection of unplanned movement of the ETT and immediate action to restore proper placement are essential to ensure patient safety. Despite this necessity, there is not a widely adopted tool for real-time assessment of ETT displacement. We have developed a device, a dual-camera endotracheal tube or DC-ETT, to address this unmet clinical need. This device uses a near-infrared (NIR) LED and a side-firing optical …
The Cultural Role Of Rice Cultivation In Female Workforce Participation In India, Gautam Hazarika
The Cultural Role Of Rice Cultivation In Female Workforce Participation In India, Gautam Hazarika
School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications
Rice and wheat are India's staple cereal crops and there is significant regional variation in the suitability to the cultivation of each. Both are so-called ‘plough-positive’ crops, whose cultivation is benefited by ploughing. It has previously been argued that the ancient adoption of the plough, a heavy implement better suited to handling by men, was a factor in the evolution of cultural norms prescribing a domestic role for women in society (Boserup, 1970). This study contends that rice is an anomalous plough-positive crop in that its cultivation, highly labor-intensive, has traditionally required much female labor. This, it is argued, may …

Assessment Of Endotracheal Tube Cuff Pressure In Reducing Postoperative Hoarseness Of Voice And Sore Throat After General Anesthesia, Ruaa Al-Juboori, Ali Abdalhameed
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
Postoperative hoarseness of voice and sore throat are most common undesirable outcome at postoperative period. They are attributed to mucosal dehydration or edema, tracheal ischemia due to relatively high cuff pressure during endotracheal intubation. However, other demographic and perioperative factors could also have their own influence. Our study aimed to assess the cuff pressure with the incidence of postoperative hoarseness and sore throat. This experimental clinical trial included (60) consecutive adult patients undergoing elective surgery who required endotracheal intubation. The patients were divided into two equal groups according to cuff pressure: with low cuff pressure (25 cmH2O) and high cuff pressure …
A Non-Formal Environmental Education Curriculum Using Raptor Ambassadors To Foster Meaningful Relationships Between Diverse Learners Of All Ages And The More-Than-Human World, Danial Davis
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
This capstone project aimed to create an all ages non-formal environmental education curriculum that intentionally fostered connections between Black and Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) and environmental education and between students of all cultures and the more-than-human world. Research suggested that BIPOC were underrepresented in environmental education programs because many programs were grounded in cultural narratives that overlooked BIPOC perspectives and epistemologies, an injustice known as “ontological distance.” The author’s experience as an educator at The Raptor Center suggested that ambassador raptors such as red-tailed hawks offered highly-engaging subjects for non-formal environmental education activities, particularly for lessons attempting new or …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Introduction: The increasing prevalence of shiftwork among young adults poses significant health risks, primarily due to its disruptive effects on sleep, nutrition and physical activity. Addressing these risks necessitates the development of tailored, evidence-based resources to support these key health behaviours. Participatory research approaches, engaging those with relevant lived experience (i.e., co-design) are a novel and effective approach in developing these resources. As such, the aim of the present study was to explore whether sleep, nutrition and physical activity resources for young shiftworkers could be developed using participatory, co-design approaches and how co-designers would rate both the approaches used and …

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Occludin, a crucial component of tight junctions, has emerged as a promising biomarker for the diagnosis of acute ischemic disease, highlighting its significant potential in clinical applications. In the diabetes, Occludin serves as a downstream target gene intricately regulated by the adiponectin (APN) signaling pathway. However, the specific mechanism by which adiponectin regulates Occludin expression remains unclear.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Endothelial-specific Ocln knockdown reduced APN-mediated blood flow recovery after femoral artery ligation and nullified APN's protection against high-fat diet (HFD)-triggered apoptosis and angiogenesis inhibition in vivo. Mechanically, we have meticulously elucidated APN's regulatory role in Occludin expression through a …

How The Settler State Continues To Dispossess: Infrastructural (Dis)Entitlement On The Critical Minerals Frontier, Dayna Nadine Scott
How The Settler State Continues To Dispossess: Infrastructural (Dis)Entitlement On The Critical Minerals Frontier, Dayna Nadine Scott
All Papers
The scramble for critical minerals to fuel the energy transition is driving new extractive frontiers across the globe. In Ontario’s far north, settler state authorities and extractive firms are engaged in coordinated tactics to gain ground amidst a growing polarization in positions of Indigenous leadership. There is both a surging resistance to, and a resigned acceptance of, critical minerals mining by First Nations. Drawing on years of community-engaged research, I detail here the contemporary state tactics of infrastructural (dis)entitlement; infrastructural needs are both denied and fulfilled to differential effect. Infrastructural disentitlement is passive; it is not necessarily deliberate, nor is …
A Right To Be Left Dead, Mark Bartholomew
A Right To Be Left Dead, Mark Bartholomew
Journal Articles
Technology forces us to contemplate a counterpart to the right of privacy—Brandeis and Warren’s “right to be let alone”—for the age of artificial intelligence: the right to be left dead. Traditionally, it has been presumed that even if Brandeis and Warren’s right constitutes “the most comprehensive of rights and the right most valued by civilized men,” it does not apply to the dead. The question is whether we need a new approach at a time when technology can reanimate anyone and make them behave in a manner indistinguishable from their living presence. This Article interrogates the need for a right …

Population Genetic Analysis Informs Dispersal Capacity In Representative Marine Trematodes From Family Microscaphidiidae And Family Paramphistomatidae, Randi Leigh Barton
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
In marine and terrestrial systems, life history drives the distribution of organisms and informs the spatial scale of population connectivity. Nearly all bony reef fishes and invertebrates have a bipartite life cycle with a planktonic larval stage, which increases the organism’s dispersal capacity, and concludes with a relatively non-dispersive adult phase. While many studies have identified the relevant spatial scale for studying population structure in fishes and invertebrates, few have done the same for parasitic taxa, which have even more complex life histories with a higher diversity in the range of dispersal strategies they use. Parasite taxa differ in (1) …

Recent findings suggest that immunoradiotherapy (IRT), combining photon radiotherapy (XRT) or proton radiotherapy (PRT) with immune checkpoint blockade, can enhance systemic tumor control. However, the comparative efficacy of XRT and PRT in IRT remains understudied. To address this, we compared outcomes between XRT + αPD1 and PRT + αPD1 in murine αPD1-resistant lung cancer (344SQR). We also assessed the impact of the nanoparticle radioenhancer NBTXR3 on both XRT + αPD1 and PRT + αPD1 for tumor control and examined the tumor immune microenvironment using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNAseq). Additionally, mice cured by NBTXR3 + PRT + αPD1 were rechallenged with …

Immunoprevention is an emerging consideration for solid tumors, including pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). We and others have shown that Kras mutations in genetic models of spontaneous pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PanIN), which is a precursor to PDAC, results in CD73 expression in the neoplastic epithelium and some populations of infiltrating immune cells, including macrophages and CD8 T cells. CD73 is an ecto-enzyme that converts extracellular adenosine monophosphate to adenosine, a critical immune inhibitory molecule in PDAC. We hypothesized inhibition of CD73 would reduce the incidence of PanIN formation and alter the immune microenvironment. To test our hypothesis, we used the KrasG12D; …

Stalemate At Port Arthur: William James On War, Vulnerability, And Pluralist Personalism, Bennett Gilbert
History Faculty Publications and Presentations
Using a close reading of a single clause and its context in a section in A Pluralist Universe, we see the moral dangers James saw in traditional ontology, in particular its relation to war and peace. This analysis opens up James’s combining the personalist philosophy of his friend Borden Bowne (and others) with the pluralism he developed late in his career. This leads, further, to reflection of James’s performative philosophizing. Finding in James a theory of “pluralistic personalism” gives us a fresh look at the far-reaching power of his basic concepts of moral philosophy.

On The Line And Online: Higher Non-Response To Web-Based Surveys Over-Represents Avid Recreational Fishers Compared With Telephone Surveys, Karina L. Ryan, Steve Taylor, Jeremy M. Lyle, Kate Stark, Sean R. Tracey
Fisheries Research Articles
Recreational fishing surveys have an important role in providing data to inform fisheries management. The selection of a contact method is an important and often challenging consideration that influences the potential for non-sampling errors that can result in unrepresentative data and biased estimates. Telephones are used for many off-site recreational fishing surveys, but widespread use of digital technology suggests that online surveys could be a viable alternative. We compared phone surveys with alternative online surveys using probability sampling from a licence database. Response rates were lower for online surveys (13%–26%) than phone surveys (97%–98%). The proportion of respondents who reported …
