Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Background: The BOC practice analysis defines the first domain as Risk Reduction, Wellness and Health Literacy including, “Promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors with effective education and communication.” There is limited evidence on primary prevention measures athletic trainers (ATs) use to address health-related behaviors. Motivational interviewing is an evidence-based patient-centered style of communication used to help patients modify detrimental health behaviors to improve health outcomes. The purpose of this study was to explore knowledge and practice patterns of primary prevention and motivational interviewing in athletic training. Methods: We used a cross-sectional, web-based survey (Qualtrics, Provo, UT). The survey contained demographic questions, …

Agricultural Producers' Perceptions Of Stressors: A Study On Controllability And Persistency, Mary Nelson Robertson, Devon Mills, Brice A. Fortinberry, Mary Marshall Waller, Hunter H. Thompson, Marina Denny, David Buys
Journal of Public Health in the Deep South
Farm stress negatively impacts agricultural producers’ (APs) physical and mental health. The average age of agricultural producers has increased in every USDA agricultural census since 1945, and the stressors may be either or both caused or exacerbated by increasing age. The Cooperative Extension Service is well-known for working with APs and is well-equipped to address these concerns for this aging population. To better understand farm-related stressors, this study examines APs’ and Extension agents’ perceptions of major stressors faced by APs. Focus groups were held to identify stressors and determine the controllability and persistency of those stressors. The mean age of …

A Phenomenological Study Of Islandness As A Global Sense Of Place: Focusing On The Animated Film Moana, Taehee Kim
A Phenomenological Study Of Islandness As A Global Sense Of Place: Focusing On The Animated Film Moana, Taehee Kim
Kritika Kultura
This article explores the question of whether islandness exists, and if so, how it can be defined. Using phenomenological methods, it examines a cultural text relevant to this question: the animated film Moana, which tells a story set on a small island. Following phenomenological procedures, any unexamined preconceptions about islandness are methodologically excluded through the suspension of judgment (epoché); islandness is defined as the “sense of place of the island” through a return to intersubjective intentionality (phenomenological reduction); the “essence” of this sense of place of the island is identified through imaginative variation (eidetic reduction). This discourse will shed light …

Youtube Digital Storytelling Of Korean Uninhabited Islands, Jooyoung Kim
Kritika Kultura
South Korea, with its extensive coastline and numerous islands, such as Jejudo, Ulleungdo, and Dokdo, is home to several uninhabited islands. These uninhabited islands embody dual roles as nostalgic symbols and territorial entities while also enduring marginalization and distortion stemming from their inhospitable conditions. Nonetheless, the emergence of recent trends in YouTube digital storytelling within South Korea has propelled uninhabited islands into the spotlight, as a result of which these islands have received considerable attention. By examining the creation and reception of YouTube narratives, we can gain valuable insights into the ever-evolving landscape of digital culture and its broader implications …

From an examination of canonical works from Tatsuhiro Oshiro’s The Cocktail Party to an investigation of more contemporary materials found on media such as YouTube and a Disney film, this article aims to examine how the featured essays closely study the concept of “islands” and how its interconnection with and influence on mobility.
Rituals And Magic On The Transition Of Sacredness In Folk Religion In Central Vietnam, Dang Huu Nguyen
Rituals And Magic On The Transition Of Sacredness In Folk Religion In Central Vietnam, Dang Huu Nguyen
Kritika Kultura
This article examines the dynamics of sacredness in Central Vietnamese folk religion. It utilizes a qualitative approach, specifically ethnographic fieldwork and in-depth interviews in the community of Danang estuary in Central Vietnam, to study rituals and magic, specifically those involved in purifying, de-sanctifying, and re-sanctifying religious artifacts. The findings of this study demonstrate that the concept of sacredness is not fixed; rather, it continuously fluctuates between states of sanctification and de-sanctification. Additionally, the dynamics of the sacred is subject to change and is attributed with different values when transferred across cultural contexts. Based on these observations, this article emphasizes the …
Photographic Power: Scenes From The United States And The Philippines, Vicente L. Rafael
Photographic Power: Scenes From The United States And The Philippines, Vicente L. Rafael
Kritika Kultura
This essay takes its inspiration from a series of addresses given by the former slave and radical abolitionist Frederick Douglass. Douglass hailed the promise of photography to bring forth democratic modes of representation. He saw in photography the power to bring distances up close and level social hierarchies by revealing the common humanity of those below with those above. Douglass, however, hedged his optimistic view. He saw that the “vast power” of photography also came with great danger. It can reveal truth but it can also foster error depending on “the master we obey.” It is this double-edged power of …
Give My Heart Ease: Filiality And Responsibility In Clarissa In Light Of Levinasian And Confucian Ethics, Ying Xiong
Give My Heart Ease: Filiality And Responsibility In Clarissa In Light Of Levinasian And Confucian Ethics, Ying Xiong
Kritika Kultura
Much has been said about the elements of plot, allegorical allusions, and the Christian design underlying character tendencies in Samuel Richardson’s Clarissa. That said, few scholars notice the intricate mechanism of filiality and responsibility that constantly functions in Clarissa’s ethical quest. Arguably, there are two categories of filiality in Clarissa, one being Levinasian, which always responds to the absolute singularity of the Other, and the other being Confucian, which demands responsibility to a totality. Judging from her struggle, one surmises that two ethical principles colliding within Clarissa’s mind as she responds to her relations mainly arise from her Levinasian sense …

Green Buddhism And W. S. Merwin’S Eco-Poetry, Jiyong Geng, Jie Zhang
Kritika Kultura
This article explores the profound influence of Buddhist environmental thought on the poetry of W.S. Merwin. It discusses how Merwin integrates Buddhist philosophies such as interdependent arising (pratītya-samutpāda), emptiness (śūnyatā), non-self (anātman), compassion (karunā), and the concept of Buddha nature into his poetic work, highlighting themes such as ecological interconnectedness, the rejection of anthropocentrism, and the intrinsic value of nature. The article examines how Merwin’s use of these themes not only enriches his poetic expression but also contributes to the broader discourse on green Buddhism, bridging the gap between human experience and ecological consciousness.

Insecta Mundi
Within the leaf-beetle subfamily Cassidinae (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Aproida Pascoe, 1863 (Aproidini) from Australia has been considered a transitional genus between mining cassidines (“hispines”) and exophagous cassidines (“tortoise beetles”). To illuminate this transition, a detailed study was conducted over one year of the biology of Aproida balyi Pascoe, 1863 on the host plant, Eustrephus latifolius R. Br. ex Ker-Gawl (Asparagaceae). Distribution maps of the host plant and three Aproida species are provided. The life cycle of A. balyi comprises single eggs in a foamy ootheca, three larval instars that feed openly, a pupa suspended from the larva III exuvia, and …

The major female ovarian hormone, 17β-estradiol (E2), can alter neuronal excitability within milliseconds to regulate a variety of physiological processes. Estrogen receptor-α (ERα), classically known as a nuclear receptor, exists as a membrane-bound receptor to mediate this rapid action of E2, but the ionic mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we show that a membrane channel protein, chloride intracellular channel protein-1 (Clic1), can physically interact with ERα with a preference to the membrane-bound ERα. Clic1-mediated currents can be enhanced by E2 and reduced by its depletion. In addition, Clic1 currents are required to mediate the E2-induced rapid excitations in multiple brain ERα …

A hallmark of addiction is the ability of drugs of abuse to trigger relapse after periods of prolonged abstinence. Here, we describe an epigenetic mechanism whereby chronic cocaine exposure causes lasting chromatin and downstream transcriptional modifications in the nucleus accumbens (NAc), a critical brain region controlling motivation. We link prolonged withdrawal from cocaine to the depletion of the histone variant H2A.Z, coupled with increased genome accessibility and latent priming of gene transcription, in D1 dopamine receptor-expressing medium spiny neurons (D1 MSNs) that relate to aberrant gene expression upon drug relapse. The histone chaperone ANP32E removes H2A.Z from chromatin, and we …

Distinct Visual Processing Networks For Foveal And Peripheral Visual Fields, Jie Zhang, Huihui Zhou, Shuo Wang
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Foveal and peripheral vision are two distinct modes of visual processing essential for navigating the world. However, it remains unclear if they engage different neural mechanisms and circuits within the visual attentional system. Here, we trained macaques to perform a free-gaze visual search task using natural face and object stimuli and recorded a large number of 14588 visually responsive units from a broadly distributed network of brain regions involved in visual attentional processing. Foveal and peripheral units had substantially different proportions across brain regions and exhibited systematic differences in encoding visual information and visual attention. The spike-local field potential (LFP) …

Proceedings Of The 2022 “Lifestyle Intervention For Epilepsy (Life)” Symposium Hosted By Cleveland Clinic, Martha Sajatovic
Faculty Scholarship
Lifestyle interventions are strategies used to self-manage medical conditions, such as epilepsy, and often complement traditional pharmacologic and surgical therapies. The need for integrating evidence-based lifestyle interventions into mainstream medicine for the treatment of epilepsy is evident given that despite the availability of a multitude of treatments with medications and surgical techniques, a significant proportion of patients have refractory seizures, and even those who are seizure-free report significant adverse effects with current treatments. Although the evidence base for complementary medicine is less robust than it is for traditional forms of medicine, the evidence to date suggests that several forms of …

Reactions To The Mpox Vaccine Regarding Absences And Disruption Of Daily Activities In The United States, Robert Rossi
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Since its global outbreak in 2022, the monkeypox (Mpox) virus has infected over 32,000 individuals in the United States, resulting in approximately 58 deaths. Although the JYNNEOS vaccine is effective at disease prevention, it has also been found to cause side effects, such as a disruption in daily activities and/or attendance at work or school. This quantitative, cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate whether differences existed in reactions to the Mpox vaccine, using secondary data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s V-safe Mpox survey. The two dependent variables were work/school absenteeism and disruption of daily activities, and the …

Background
Complexity in landscape structure is often assessed using individual metrics related to ecological processes. However, this rarely incorporates important relationships among metrics and may miss landscape structure effects. Multivariate statistics provide techniques for assessing overall landscape structure effects. We assessed how multivariate statistics could be used to connect landscape structure with an ecological process [bobcat (Lynx rufus) wildlife crossing structure (WCS) use]. We tested how landscape structure at WCS sites compared to the surrounding landscape and how structure affected detections at WCS sites. Our study was conducted in Cameron County, Texas, USA where WCSs are in various …
