Grain and Other Field Crops Research Articles
A major limitation to producing high seed yields in berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrinum L.) is failure to set seed, predominantly due to lack of pollination. Despite the importance of berseem clover as a leading forage legume, the contribution of pollinators to seed set is scarce. In Pakistan, the honeybee population is declining mainly because of the extensive use of neonicotinoid pesticides and habitat fragmentation. This, combined with the region’s harsh environment and the use of inferior, locally bred genotypes, has resulted in low seed yields. Insufficient seed availability leads to limited forage supply, resulting in poor livestock nutrition, which …

Marine mammals are integral to global biodiversity and marine health through their roles in coastal, benthic, and pelagic ecosystems. Marine mammals face escalating threats from climate change, pollution, and human activities, which perturb their oceanic environment. The diverse biology and extreme adaptations evolved by marine mammals make them important study subjects for understanding anthropogenic pressures on marine ecosystems. However, ethical and logistical constraints restrict the tractability of experimental research with live marine mammals. Additionally, studies on the effects of changing ocean environments are further complicated by intricate gene-environment interactions across populations and species. These obstacles can be overcome with a …

Common single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 alpha kinase 3 (EIF2AK3) slightly increase the risk of disorders in the periphery and the central nervous system. EIF2AK3 encodes protein kinase RNA-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase (PERK), a key regulator of ER stress. Three exonic EIF2AK3 SNVs form the PERK-B haplotype, which is present in 28% of the global population. Importantly, the precise impact of these SNVs on PERK activity remains elusive. In this study, we demonstrate that PERK-B SNVs do not alter PERK expression or basal activity in vitro and in the novel triple knock-in mice expressing the exonic …

Developing Accurate And Automated High-Field And Benchtop Nmr-Based Metabolomic Techniques Using Neural Networks, Hayden Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
NMR-based metabolomics is an increasingly important tool for understanding organisms and biological systems; however, data processing is an often-tedious process and access to high-field NMR spectrometers is limited. Conventional data processing for metabolite profiling relies on slow, user-dependent analysis, yet modern artificial intelligence techniques have scantly been explored in quantitative NMR applications despite their industry transforming effects in many major data processing applications. This work aims to develop neural network approaches to fully automate the identification and quantification of metabolites from NMR spectra while increasing speed and throughput compared to conventional analysis. Our initial investigation implements neural networks for the …

The Kashmir Himalayas, a region of immense ecological importance, have experienced profound degradation by land-use changes, raising concerns about sustainability. This degradation carries significant global implications, including carbon loss, soil quality deterioration, habitat destruction, and loss of biodiversity. This study investigates various key land uses, including economically vital cash crops such as apples and saffron, the socially significant staple food crop rice, forest, and pasture systems. Findings reveals that forest and pasture maintain significantly better physical, chemical, microbial, and enzymes activities, and exhibit greater soil nutrient reserves and soil organic carbon (SOC) pools. Specifically, forest soils contain 20.21%, 28.22%, and …

Drought is one of the important factors that cause a decrease in productivity and quality in plant cultivation. Stress tolerance in plants can be increased or damage can be reduced by various exogenous applications. One of them is flavonoids, which have an important role in the response to stress through changes that occur at the endogenous level in the plant due to drought stress. The effects of exogenous treatment of chrysin, a member of the flavonoid group, on tomato seedlings grown under water deficit were examined. Different doses (C0: Control with no treatment, C1: 0.1 mM, C2: 0.5 mM and …

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence suggests that low socioeconomic status (SES) home environments may play a role by promoting excess energy intake through a lack of access to non-food reinforcers. Because of the deleterious effects of SES-related disparities on child health and development, feasible and culturally acceptable interventions are urgently needed. Community-based music enrichment programs may be an ideal intervention strategy.
METHODS: In collaboration with a local non-profit organization and music studio, we conducted a pilot randomized controlled trial to assess the effects of a music enrichment program versus a play date control in a group of 9-24-month-old healthy infants (N = …

Transposable elements (TEs) are crucial for genetic diversity and gene regulation. Current single-cell quantification methods often align multi-mapping reads to either 'best-mapped' or 'random-mapped' locations and categorize them at the subfamily levels, overlooking the biological necessity for accurate, locus-specific TE quantification. Moreover, these existing methods are primarily designed for and focused on transcriptomics data, which restricts their adaptability to single-cell data of other modalities. To address these challenges, here we introduce MATES, a deep-learning approach that accurately allocates multi-mapping reads to specific loci of TEs, utilizing context from adjacent read alignments flanking the TE locus. When applied to diverse single-cell …

Shell Translucency: A Novel Eggshell Quality Parameter In Broiler Breeders, Duarte Neves, Austin Jasek, Colwayne Morris, Raquel Burin, Kevin Stephens, Marco Rebollo
Proceedings of the Arkansas Nutrition Conference
In the United States, nearly 240 million commercial broiler breeder eggs are incubated weekly with an average hatchability of 79.1% (Third Party Reporting). Between 160 eggs/hen and 125 chicks/hen the loss is considerable. In 2007, an estimated 1% improvement in hatchability would escalate profits by over $25 million to hatcheries and markedly increase profitability in broiler operations (Schaal and Gherian, 2007). In order to tap into top hatchability performances, egg management in commercial hatcheries such as egg storage time and conditions, incubation temperature and humidity, as well as turning frequency are of utmost importance (Vick et al., 1993; Reis et …

The growing engagement of artists with ecological challenges is a significant trend in the Anthropocene era. Most often, some of them feel driven by a sense of responsibility regarding the impact of industry and consumer society on the environment. Their commitment becomes a form of activism, mobilization or even a simple commercial niche to exploit. By observing this enthusiasm in the art world for environmental issues, we can ask ourselves the following questions: despite their sometimes lack of in-depth knowledge, where does the role of artists begin and end in this complex universe? Does their commitment have real power to …

Nature does things well, but sometimes it takes crooked paths... In psychoanalysis, the role of the psychoanalyst, as of any other therapist, is not only to set clinical goals, to understand the psychic work of the patient and to accompany him in his self-discovery. Above all, it is supposed to manage the internal conflicts of the suffering subject. To do this, he seeks to shed light on his unconscious journey and detect the vagaries of his psychic functioning. He try to act on his commitment, motivation and adherence to the values of the society in which he lives, without hindering …

Climate change is a global phenomenon due to global warming, characterized by a general increase in average temperatures. This change is linked to industrial activity, in particular to the greenhouse effect, which is why it is said to be of human origin. Alongside scientists, writers now include themes linked to global warming. New genres have appeared such as climate fiction. Thomas B. Reverdy, in his novel Climax describes the end of the world in the context of global warming. The action takes place in the north, towards the Arctic. The story involves various protagonists who remember Norse legends about the …

Aging is a major risk factor for numerous chronic diseases and declines in physical and cognitive functions, making it a critical focus of research. Identifying biomarkers that signify biological aging is crucial for developing interventions that can potentially delay age-related diseases. Among these biomarkers, human aging proteins are of significant interest. However, laboratory experiments to discover aging proteins are complex, costly, and time-consuming. Often focusing on single proteins at a time. To address this challenge, we used a clustering algorithm to detect potential human aging proteins. This approach aims to aid biologists in their experimental efforts. Deep clustering, particularly simultaneous …
