Pediatric Cardiac Xenotransplantation And Expanded Access: Ethical Considerations, Daniel J Hurst, Christopher Bobier, Anthony Merlocco, Luz A Padilla, Daniel Rodger, David Cleveland, John D Cleveland

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

Due to the current organ shortage waitlist, alternatives to allotransplantation are necessary. Xenotransplantation is currently being pursued as one such alternative in adults in need of kidney or heart transplantation. Cardiac xenotransplantation of genetically modified pig hearts has been conducted twice in adults under the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) expanded access criteria. Because of the shortage of transplantable hearts for children as well as the lack of mechanical circulatory support in this population, pediatric researchers are exploring FDA expanded access in high-risk neonates and infants who lack alternative options for survival. The adult cardiac xenotransplantation experience with …

Contributions Of Speaking, Listening, And Semantic Depth To Word Learning In Typical 3- And 4-Year-Olds, Peter Richtsmeier, Allison Gladfelter, Michelle Moore

CISLL Publications

Purpose: This study examined learning via perception, learning via production, and semantic depth as contributors to word learning in preschool-aged children. There is broad evidence that semantic depth is an important contributor to word learning, especially when semantic cues are repeated and spaced out over time. Perceptual learning and production learning each support word learning sometimes, but not in all cases. The purpose of this study was to examine all three learning mechanisms within a single experimental paradigm.

Method: Thirty-six typically developing preschool children completed the experiment. They were familiarized with 16 novel words that were contextualized as alien names. …

Do Linear Clearings In Boreal Peatlands Recover? Comparing Taxonomic, Phylogenetic, And Functional Plant Diversity, Ellie M. Goud, Scott J. Davidson, Anna Dabros, Kimberly Kleinke, Megan A. Schmidt, Maria Strack Oct 2024

Do Linear Clearings In Boreal Peatlands Recover? Comparing Taxonomic, Phylogenetic, And Functional Plant Diversity, Ellie M. Goud, Scott J. Davidson, Anna Dabros, Kimberly Kleinke, Megan A. Schmidt, Maria Strack

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Land-use changes and anthropogenic disturbances are major threats to biodiversity, affecting ecosystem function and recovery. In boreal Alberta, Canada, petroleum development has led to extensive landscape fragmentation, notably through linear clearings created for seismic exploration that remove surface vegetation and microtopography. Despite partial recovery on forested seismic lines, peatland recovery is often arrested, impacting wildlife and carbon dynamics. Restoration efforts employ silviculture techniques to create microtopography and foster tree growth, but the efficacy of restoration treatments in restoring peatland plant diversity remains uncertain. We compared taxonomic, phylogenetic, and functional diversity of understory plant communities across treated and untreated seismic lines, …

Characterization Of Non-Standard Viral Genomes During Arenavirus Infections Identifies Prominent S Rna Intergenic Region Deletions, Matthew Hackbart, Carolina B López Oct 2024

Characterization Of Non-Standard Viral Genomes During Arenavirus Infections Identifies Prominent S Rna Intergenic Region Deletions, Matthew Hackbart, Carolina B López

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Arenaviruses, a family of negative-sense RNA viruses spread by rodents, are a leading cause of severe hemorrhagic fever in humans. Due to a paucity of antivirals and vaccines for arenaviruses, there is a need to identify new mechanisms for interfering with arenavirus replication. In several negative-sense RNA viruses, natural viral interference results from the production of non-standard viral genomes (nsVGs) that activate the innate immune system and/or compete for essential viral products. Although it is well established that arenaviruses produce strong interfering activities, it is unknown if they produce interfering nsVGs. Here, we show that arenaviruses produce deletions within the …

Three-Dimensional Outdoor Object Detection In Quadrupedal Robots For Surveillance Navigations, Muhammad Hassan Tanveer, Zainab Fatima, Hira Mariam, Tanazzah Rehman, Razvan Cristian Voicu

Faculty Articles

Quadrupedal robots are confronted with the intricate challenge of navigating dynamic environments fraught with diverse and unpredictable scenarios. Effectively identifying and responding to obstacles is paramount for ensuring safe and reliable navigation. This paper introduces a pioneering method for 3D object detection, termed viewpoint feature histograms, which leverages the established paradigm of 2D detection in projection. By translating 2D bounding boxes into 3D object proposals, this approach not only enables the reuse of existing 2D detectors but also significantly increases the performance with less computation required, allowing for real-time detection. Our method is versatile, targeting both bird’s eye view objects …

The Need For Accurate [And Respectful] Depictions Of Mental Illness In Fiction, Jacequlyn L. Mills

Masters Theses

This thesis seeks to address the ongoing misrepresentation of mental illness in popular media, specifically within film, television, and literature. The power of the media is instrumental in public perception, and the ongoing negative misinformation and inaccuracy of mental illness those who are affected by it in media is instrumental in spreading harmful stereotypes and stigma. This affects not only the way that the general public views mental illness but also the way those with mental illness view themselves as well as their desire to seek help. I use these forms of media to showcase both the negative and positive …

When Obedience Becomes A Sacrifice: Creating And Sustaining Resilient Leaders, Janet G. Wooten Oct 2024

When Obedience Becomes A Sacrifice: Creating And Sustaining Resilient Leaders, Janet G. Wooten

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This thesis, “When Obedience Becomes a Sacrifice,” discusses the role of sacrifice in obeying God's call to lead. The lay leaders of Call to Conquer Ministries do not seem to understand this role, leading to ministry challenges. This research aims to provide a deeper understanding of the role of sacrifice in leadership and how to maintain resiliency during difficult times. Potential leaders answer God’s call to lead, believing that “obedience is better than sacrifice" (1 Samuel 15:22a). However, there is a lack of full clarity concerning the sacrifices made because of their obedience. The question to be addressed is “What …

Developing A Biblical Worldview: Equipping African American Leaders With The Tools Needed To Combat The Reemergence Of Syncretism Within The African American Church, William Taft Wallace Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Historically, African Americans have grappled with questions of identity, a struggle initially precipitated by the diaspora. Over time, this ongoing struggle has led many to seek answers from various sources, each of which has influenced and shaped their worldview. In response to this ongoing identity crisis, the African American church has traditionally served as a stabilizing force, emphasizing that identity is rooted in the image of God, as affirmed by the Bible. However, today’s African American church faces significant insider threats from other African American-based groups that promote counter-biblical and anti-Christian narratives regarding identity. These threats have infiltrated the church, …

Vitamin D Deficiency As A Sign Of Severity In Bronchiectasis, Mustafa Eskander Salman, Mohammed Waheeb Al-Obaidy

Muthanna Medical Journal

Bronchiectasis is a chronic heterogeneous lung disease with poorly understood pathogenic processes and variable contributing factors. The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence and the impact of vitamin D deficiency in bronchiectasis patients. A cross-sectional study of 40 Baghdad teaching hospital respiratory diseases consultant outpatient clinic patients with verified bronchiectasis was undertaken between 2022 and 2023. 40 healthy, demographically matched controls were also studied. A detailed history, comprehensive physical examination with respiratory emphasis, and vitamin D level evaluation were done. Vitamin D levels were categorized as deficient (< 20 ng/ml), insufficiency (20–29.9 ng/ml), and adequate (≥ 30 ng/ml). Patients were categorized as frequent exacerbates (≥3 times/year) or non-frequent exacerbates (<3 times/year). Symptom intensity was further divided into mild, moderate, and severe. We studied 40 bronchiectasis patients, 21 of them were male and 7 had comorbidities. The mean age, BMI, ESR, and CRP for included patients were 39 years, 23.945 kg/m2, 9.65 ml/hr, and 0.234 mg/dL. Group vitamin levels averaged 19.68 ng/ml. Average annual exacerbation, BSI, Bhalla, and FEV1 scores were 1.95, 6.325, 14.275, and 85.8%. Bronchiectasis patients and healthy controls had similar demographic and clinical features except for vitamin D and CRP. Exacerbation number, BSI score, Bhalla score, and FEV1 correlated with vitamin D but not ESR or CRP. In conclusion, Vitamin D insufficiency is common in bronchiectasis patients and healthy people and is linked to poor symptom severity, radiological abnormalities, and lung function.

Juror Number Six: Implicit Bias And The Future Of Jury Trials, Dave Mcgowan Oct 2024

Juror Number Six: Implicit Bias And The Future Of Jury Trials, Dave Mcgowan

San Diego Law Review

Implicit bias concepts have been quick to take hold in the law. Their influence may be traced through mandatory continuing education requirements, statutory restrictions on jury selection, jury instructions, and, in two recent rulings from the Washington Supreme Court, judicial limits on juror deliberations and permissible arguments. These limits use implicit bias premises to experiment with altering the balance of interests served by jury trials.

Part II of this Article tells the story of the trial of Tomas Berhe, who was convicted of shooting Everett Williams to death. Mr. Berhe’s case led to an extraordinary event: a live hearing in …

Democratic Practices As Part Of Mathematical Modeling In Schools, Lisa Steffensen, Inger Elin Lilland, Shengtian Zhou

Democracy & Education

We focus on how democratic practices occur during the modeling activity “The Candy Bag of Dreams.” With democratic practices, we refer to approaches supporting inclusivity and active participation aimed at empowering students. We investigated one group of preservice teachers implementing an optimizing modeling activity during practicum in two fifth-grade classes, where students modeled their dream candy bags. Students engaged in mathematical modeling where mathematics was embedded in their social context, and they negotiated meanings and developed perspectives. Through this, they experienced lived democracy by actively engaging in and through democratic practices.

We found democratic practices such as students inviting peers …

Monocyte And Macrophage Functions In Oncogenic Viral Infections, Juliana Echevarria-Lima, Ramona Moles

Cell and Molecular Biology Publications

Monocytes and macrophages are part of innate immunity and constitute the first line of defense against pathogens. Bone marrow-derived monocytes circulate in the bloodstream for one to three days and then typically migrate into tissues, where they differentiate into macrophages. Circulatory monocytes represent 5% of the nucleated cells in normal adult blood. Following differentiation, macrophages are distributed into various tissues and organs to take residence and maintain body homeostasis. Emerging evidence has highlighted the critical role of monocytes/macrophages in oncogenic viral infections, mainly their crucial functions in viral persistence and disease progression. These findings open opportunities to target innate immunity …

Wildlife biodiversity is essential for healthy, resilient and sustainable ecosystems. For biologists, this diversity also represents a treasure trove of genetic, molecular and developmental mechanisms that deepen our understanding of the origins and rules of life. However, the rapid decline in biodiversity reported recently foreshadows a potentially catastrophic collapse of many important ecosystems and the associated irreversible loss of many forms of life on our planet. Immediate action by conservationists of all stripes is required to avert this disaster. In this Spotlight, we draw together insights and proposals discussed at a recent workshop hosted by Revive & Restore, which gathered …
