Developing Thick Skin: Pediatric Eczema In Vulnerable Communities And Fda Regulation Of Cosmetic Products, Abayomi Jones Md, Jd Oct 2024

Developing Thick Skin: Pediatric Eczema In Vulnerable Communities And Fda Regulation Of Cosmetic Products, Abayomi Jones Md, Jd

Journal of Law and Health

Eczema is a common yet serious inflammatory skin condition affecting millions of children in the United States. Dark skin and/or African-American ethnicity are risk factors for increased eczema severity, most likely due to systemic racism expressed as lower socioeconomic status, increased environmental toxin exposure, decreased access to adequate medical care, and infrequent implementation of early intervention practices. Skin-directed management of eczema for caregivers is critically important for improving clinical outcomes of children with eczema. Skin-directed management of eczema includes avoidance of allergens and appropriate moisturization of skin, which warrants evaluation of cosmetic products like lotions, creams and oils essential for …

Can We Use Judgement Bias To Assess The Welfare Of Fish In Aquariums And Zoos?, Culum Brown Oct 2024

Can We Use Judgement Bias To Assess The Welfare Of Fish In Aquariums And Zoos?, Culum Brown

Animal Sentience

This commentary examines the potential of tests of judgment bias to assess fish welfare in aquariums and zoos. Judgment bias offers a non-invasive approach to interpreting affective states in animals, using cognitive responses to ambiguous stimuli as indicators of mental wellbeing. Despite the constraints of captive environments—such as limited handling and species diversity in exhibits—recent adaptations of judgment-bias protocols make them suitable across taxa, including fishes. Collaborations with progressive zoos and aquariums could facilitate this research, based on the shared goal of enhancing animal welfare and promoting public education.

Marching Backwards Into Battle: On The Use Of Dignity / "كرامــة" In The Syrian Revolution, Stefan Tarnowski Oct 2024

Marching Backwards Into Battle: On The Use Of Dignity / "كرامــة" In The Syrian Revolution, Stefan Tarnowski

Regards

The concept of dignity takes on a strange complexion when thinking through its double use by both the regime and its opponents in Syria since 2011. Like Bashar al-Assad, dignity seems to have two bodies. One belongs to the period of the Arab revolutions, events that some scholars once hoped would herald the end of postcoloniality (Dabashi Hamid); the other to the anticolonial struggle for dignity enshrined in the postcolonial state (Harkin Juliette). Drawing on Quentin Skinner and Reinhart Koselleck, the essay proposes a method for analysing lexical continuity and semantic shift in the lexicon of the Syrian revolution. Through …

Significance Of Color Dimorphism In Female Florida Scrub Lizards, Dylan F. Styers, Lance D. Mcbrayer Oct 2024

Significance Of Color Dimorphism In Female Florida Scrub Lizards, Dylan F. Styers, Lance D. Mcbrayer

Honors College Theses

Color dimorphism refers to the variation in color, color frequency, and physical traits between male and female individuals of the same species. It manifests in most dioecious species, presenting as differences in size, color, marking, and behavioral sexual characteristics. Sceloporus woodi, the Florida scrub lizard, is a species endemic to Florida that exhibits color dimorphism, particularity in size, and coloration of secondary sex characteristics. Despite the significance of color dimorphism in the social structure and sexual selection in these lizards, little is known about the factors that are correlated to sexual secondary characteristics present in females. This study explored the …

Borrowing Within Malayic; The Role Of Exotericity, David Gil Oct 2024

Borrowing Within Malayic; The Role Of Exotericity, David Gil

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This paper presents a general survey of borrowing within the Malayic language family, in which both the source and the recipient languages are either varieties of Malay/Indonesian, or other closely-related Malayic languages. The survey provides empirical evidence for a generalization governing the directionality of borrowing, specifying that the donor variety tends to be higher than the recipient variety on a scale of exotericity, making reference to a set of features of a broadly sociolinguistic nature. In terms of a sociolinguistically-based typology of Malayic varieties, the most frequent instances of borrowing within Malayic are from Standard Malay and Indonesian into koiné …

Effects Of Retinal Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone On Reproductive Behavior And Retinal Activity In The Cichlid Fish, Astatotilapia Burtoni, Chase Anselmo Oct 2024

Effects Of Retinal Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone On Reproductive Behavior And Retinal Activity In The Cichlid Fish, Astatotilapia Burtoni, Chase Anselmo

LSU Master's Theses

Many animals use visual signals to evade predators, forage for food, and communicate with conspecifics. Some animals that shift into and out of breeding stages, such as fish, can modulate their visual sensitivity to better adapt to changing internal and external conditions. Previous work in our lab demonstrated that females of the cichlid fish Astatotilapia burtoni have improved visual sensitivity when they enter reproductive readiness. However, little is known about how fish and vertebrates more broadly modulate visual sensitivity across their reproductive cycle. We hypothesized that the hormone and neuromodulator gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) could modulate visual sensitivity because GnRH is …

Accumulation Of Road Salt In A Calcareous Fen: Kampoosa Bog, Western Massachusetts, Wayne Ndlovu, Andrew J. Guswa, Amy L. Rhodes

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Road salt poses a threat to the quality of soils and water resources. Wetlands located in salt contaminated areas are at risk of experiencing lower plant and animal species diversity. Therefore, it is critical to understand how modifications to salt application rates and hydrological events impact wetland water quality. Here, we use chloride mass flux, discharge, groundwater chloride concentration, meteorological, and salt application data from 2012– 2020 to estimate chloride accumulation and outflux rates in the Kampoosa Bog subwatersheds, located in Stockbridge and Lee, Massachusetts, and bordered by major highways (Interstate-90 and U.S. Route 7). We also investigate the correlation …

Exploring The Efficacy Of Transcutaneous Auricular Vagal Nerve Stimulation On Post-Stroke Aphasia: A Single-Subject Design Study, Aswathy Anakkathil Pradeep

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Background: Anomia or word-retrieval difficulty is a common long-term language impairment for individuals with post-stroke aphasia. Several behavioral interventions like semantic feature analysis (SFA) have shown positive results in naming outcomes, but continue to face difficulty in generalizing the treatment effects to untreated items. With recent advancements in technology, researchers are developing newer neuromodulation devices that aim at promoting neuroplasticity and neural reorganization in post-stroke individuals. Transcutaneous auricular vagal nerve stimulation (taVNS) is a relatively new technology that aims at stimulating the auricular branch of the vagal nerve to promote neuroplasticity. Studies have shown taVNS to potentially facilitate positive improvements …

Evaluating Viability, Developmental Competence, And Chromatin Configurations Of Cryopreserved Equine Oocytes, Tricia Adams

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Assisted reproduction technology and the use of specialized laboratories have increased in the horse breeding industry over the last decade. This expansion has highlighted the inability to routinely cryopreserve oocytes and preserve female genetics. Oocyte vitrification, a cryopreservation process, continues to be characterized as an experimental procedure in horses. The goal of this dissertation was to evaluate the viability, developmental competence, and nuclear structures of cryopreserved equine oocytes to illuminate potential areas of improvement in the vitrification process. Oocytes were collected from abattoir derived ovaries and exposed to either varying lengths of in vitro maturation (IVM) or pretreated with a …

The Consortium Of Celestials: Cosmic Objects Equitable Interactions, Sekar Nabila Prajwalita Reka Pravyana, Yandi Andri Yatmo

ARSNET

This speculative design study presents a provocative inquiry into the idea of an equitable society, addressed through the exploration of cosmic scale and celestial object interactions. The issues of injustice occurring in current society are influenced by the lack of access to resources and opportunities, where architecture also plays a part. Using a post-humanist approach, the study speculates on the scale of society, broadening the context of civilisation to develop an equitable society. The study creates a science narrative of a cosmic-scale civilisation as the basis of the architectural scheme between celestial objects in cosmic space that interacts in an …

Evaluation Of Nematicides For Management Of Plant-Parasitic Nematodes In Sugarcane, Iris M. Aguilar Oct 2024

Evaluation Of Nematicides For Management Of Plant-Parasitic Nematodes In Sugarcane, Iris M. Aguilar

LSU Master's Theses

Plant-parasitic nematodes (PPN) are an understudied threat in sugarcane production. Previous survey work showed that Tylenchorhynchus (stunt nematode), Pratylenchus (lesion nematode), Mesocriconema (ring nematode), and Helicotylenchus (spiral nematode) are the primary PPN genera found in sugarcane fields in Louisiana. This study evaluated the impact of nematodes on sugarcane growth and the effect of nematicides on nematode population densities. Greenhouse studies were conducted using soil collected from multiple sugarcane fields with moderate PPN infestation levels to determine the nematode impact on sugarcane growth and nematicide efficacy. Field soil collected from each site was subjected to four treatments: an untreated and sterilized …

Austroasiatic Loanwords In Austronesian Languages, Waruno Mahdi

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This paper investigates lexical borrowing from Austroasiatic into Austronesian languages. It does so for the following contact stages and interactions between these languages following the Austronesian overseas dispersal: (Stage 1) early contacts between Austroasiatic and Malayo-Polynesian particularly in the early Neolithic in the area encompassing mainland Southeast Asia, Northwest Kalimantan, and Sumatra, often resulting in the transmission of faunal terms; (Stage 2) interactions between speakers of Mon-Khmer and Malayo-Chamic languages during the early development of statehood; (Stage 3) exchange of terms in the period of early Khmer, Cham, and Malay kingdoms. Some of these transmissions can be shown to have …
