Asian Management Insights
Urban greening requires a re-look at sharing space with animals and nature.
1. There are several challenges when balancing urban development with ecological sustainability, as seen in Singapore’s struggles with human-wildlife interactions like wild boars entering populated areas.
2. Opinions on managing wildlife diverge between calls for stricter population control and concerns over habitat loss. This shows the need for balanced approaches that cater to both humans and ecology alike.
3. Cities like Houston, Barcelona, and Hong Kong offer different models for human-wildlife management, showing that local contexts shape approaches to achieving peaceful coexistence with urban wildlife.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Cannabis Use, And The Endocannabinoid System: A Scoping Review, Jennie Ryan, Mitchell Fruchtman, Andrea Sparr-Jaswa, Amy Knehans, Brooke Worster
Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
There is emerging evidence that the endocannabinoid system (ECS) plays a significant role in the pathophysiology of many psychiatric disorders, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Increasing evidence suggests that a number of neurobiological correlates between endogenous cannabinoid function and cognitive dysfunction are seen in ADHD, making the ECS a possible target for therapeutic interventions. Cannabis use and cannabis use disorder are more prevalent in individuals with ADHD, compared to the general population, and there is growing popular perception that cannabis is therapeutic for ADHD. However, the relationship between cannabis use and ADHD symptomology is poorly understood. Further understanding of …

Background: Extreme weather is a recognised risk factor for stillbirth and preterm birth, disrupts women’s access to healthcare during pregnancy and childbirth, and negatively affects the care of newborns. Reliable and accessible heat and weather warning systems are key in alerting individuals to undertake protective measures. There is a notable gap in understanding how women and caregivers in rural East Africa perceive and utilize weather information. We investigated community members’ heat and weather warning information-seeking behaviour, identified available sources, assessed their reliability and utility, and examined their influence on behaviour.
Settings: Our research was conducted in rural Kilifi County in …

Eastern Baccharis Control In Newly Planted Wetland Reserve Programs, Lucas Stamper
Eastern Baccharis Control In Newly Planted Wetland Reserve Programs, Lucas Stamper
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley is a high-priority region for restoration of bottomland hardwood forests. Restoration of these forests is facilitated through conservation easement programs, such as the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) and the Wetland Reserve Program (WRP), which focus on retiring marginal agriculture land and restoring bottomland hardwoods. A prominent issue that reduces hardwood establishment success is the failure to suppress competing vegetation, like eastern baccharis (Baccharis halimifolia L.), that aggressively colonize a site after seedlings are planted. Eastern baccharis is a frequent woody invader of disturbed bottomland sites throughout northeast Louisiana. There are few chemical options for …

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is a leading cause of death worldwide. Activating mutations in the tyrosine kinase domain of the oncogene epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) are responsible for ~10–50% of all LUAD cases. Although tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have been effective in prolonging patient survival and quality of life, acquired resistance and disease progression are inevitable, presenting a clear unmet need for alternative or adjuvant therapeutics. Here we show that an anti-EGFR aptamer (EGFRapt) decreases viability and tumor growth of LUAD cell lines harboring the L858R ± T790M mutation in EGFR. Additionally, we elucidate …

In mice, the fetal brain is dependent upon the placenta for factors that guide its early development. This linkage between the two organs has given rise to the term, the placenta–brain axis. A similar interrelationship between the two organs may exist in humans. We hypothesize that extracellular vesicles (EVs) released from placental trophoblast (TB) cells transport small RNA and other informational biomolecules from the placenta to the brain where their contents have pleiotropic effects. Here, EVs were isolated from the medium in which human trophoblasts (TBs) had been differentiated in vitro from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) and from cultured …
As Punishment For Arrests: Involuntary Servitude Under The Housekeeping Exception To The Thirteenth Amendment, Elissa Bowling
As Punishment For Arrests: Involuntary Servitude Under The Housekeeping Exception To The Thirteenth Amendment, Elissa Bowling
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
The Thirteenth Amendment reads: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” Yet, in contemporary American jails and prisons, pretrial detainees have been forced to perform work for these carceral facilities despite not being convicted of a crime. When tasked with assessing the constitutionality of such pre-conviction labor policies, courts employed a narrow reading of the Thirteenth Amendment and ruled that jails and prisons can compel pretrial detainees to perform maintenance and operational tasks under the …

Chronologically Inappropriate Morphogenesis (Chinmo) Is Required For Maintenance Of Larval Stages Of Fall Armyworm, Xien Chen, Jinmo Koo, Surjeet Kumar Arya, Subba R. Palli
Entomology Faculty Publications
Broad complex (Br-C) and eip93F (E93) transcription factors promote insect metamorphosis from larva to pupa and from pupa to adult, respectively. Recently, chronologically inappropriate morphogenesis (Chinmo) has been proposed as a larval specifier in Drosophila melanogaster. However, whether Chinmo is required for larval maintenance in lepidopteran insects, the underlying mechanisms involved in maintaining the larval stage, and its interactions with the JH signaling pathway are not well understood. Here, we used a binary transgenic CRISPR/Cas9 system to knockout Chinmo and Kr-h1 (primary response gene in the JH signaling pathway) in the fall armyworm (FAW). Kr-h1 knockout induced premature metamorphosis only …

Faculty Publications - Information Technology
An organization’s privacy policy states how it collects, stores, processes, and shares its users’ personal information. The growing number of data protection laws and regulations, as well as the numerous sectors where the organizations are collecting user information, has led to the investigation of privacy policies with regards to their accessibility, readability, completeness, comparison with organization’s actual data practices, use of machine learning/natural language processing for automated analysis, and comprehension/perception/concerns of end-users via summarization/visualization tools and user studies. However, there is limited work on systematically reviewing the existing research on this topic. We address this gap by conducting a systematic …

Vascular dementia (VaD) is a complex neurodegenerative condition, with cerebral small vessel dysfunctions as the central role in its pathogenesis. Given the lack of suitable animal models to study the disease pathogenesis, we developed a mouse model to closely emulate the clinical scenarios of recurrent transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) leading to VaD using vasoconstricting peptide Endothelin-1(ET-1). We observed that administration of ET-1 led to blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption and detrimental changes in its components, such as endothelial cells and pericytes, along with neuronal loss and synaptic dysfunction, resulting in irreversible memory loss. Further, in our pursuit of understanding potential interventions, …

Background and Aim: Bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced neuroinflammation can be the most dependable animal model for studying neurodegeneration mechanisms driven by systemic inflammation-induced neuroinflammation. Hence, this study aimed to standardize the LPS model of neuroinflammation by comparing the effect of relatively low-dose LPS administered for different durations on the induction of neurodegeneration in Wistar rats. Materials and Methods: Six groups of six adult Wistar rats per group were used in the study. Group 1 was the control group, and the other five were administered single weekly dose of LPS (170 µg/kg) for increasing durations, ranging from 4 weeks to 8 weeks. …

A Novel Statistical Approach To Obtain The Best Visibility Slice In Mri Sequence Of Brain Tumors, Hassan Al-Yassin, Mohammed A. Fadhel, Omran Al-Shamma
Baghdad Science Journal
Early diagnosis of brain tumor enhances the possibility of patients being cured. With the progress of the use of artificial intelligence in the medical field, the detection of brain tumors has become one of the researchers’ interests. Obtaining which slice in the MRI sequence gives the best visibility of the tumor is still a challenge. This paper introduced a novel statistical approach to extracting the tumor from the patient's MRI scan (sequence). Initially, the probability mass function (PMF) was computed for each image in the sequence. Then, the Kullback-Leibler divergence technique was applied to determine the tumor image(s) that diverged …
Why The United States Should Change Its Standards For Food Additives, Sara Smith
Why The United States Should Change Its Standards For Food Additives, Sara Smith
Touro Law Review
Processed food products sold in the United States are vastly different than those in Europe, often containing unnecessary and potentially dangerous additives. Recently, food consumer advocacy groups and reporters are bringing attention to these differences, thereby raising awareness of the poor processed food quality in the United States. The United States should take a new and improved method to food safety that mirrors the European Union’s approach. This Note will compare the differences between food additives in the United States and Europe, and further, will propose solutions to increase regulation on food additives in the United States.

#Employerstoo: Expanding Vicarious Liability For Sexual Harassment In Title Vii And Tort Law, Kassandra "Kassie" Fotiadis
Michigan Law Review
When an individual experiences sexual harassment through a workplace, she has limited options for recourse. One seemingly promising possibility is bringing a claim against her perpetrator’s employer. But this option—achievable through vicarious liability—has failed to realize its potential. In 1998, the U.S. Supreme Court established a standard to enforce vicarious liability for sexual harassment claims under Title VII. That standard, though, was limited in scope to begin with and has further narrowed over time. Common law principles also allow courts to hold employers vicariously liable for sexual harassment in tort. But few jurisdictions have adopted those principles, and there is …

Effects Of Cultivars And Fungicides On Foliar Fungal Diseases And Fusarium Head Blight In Winter Wheat, Mahnoor Asif
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Foliar fungal diseases and Fusarium head blight (FHB) are among the major causes of significant yield losses in wheat production, particularly in Nebraska. Resistant cultivars and fungicide applications are common management strategies, but the overuse of fungicides has raised concerns about resistance in Fusarium graminearum populations in Nebraska. This study evaluated the effects of cultivar resistance, fungicide timing and their economic benefits. It also assessed the sensitivity of Nebraska isolates of F. graminearum and F. boothii to a triazole fungicide. In 2022 and 2024, 14 fungicide treatments and a control were arranged in a split-plot experimental design with …

Perceptions Of Texas Small-Scale Producers On Success, Challenges, And The Future Of Agriculture, Katie Tritsch, Ken Mix, Michelle L. Edwards, Manuel Piña Jr.
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
The roles and survival of small farms are much debated, and their operators are not well understood. This exploratory study examines the perceptions of Texas small producers using a sample of mostly first- generation farmers who consider agriculture their primary occupation and who use sustainable practices. Semistructured interviews revealed six prominent themes related to small-farmers’ success, challenges, and visions for the future. Of these, personal fulfillment, importance of community, and adaptability and versatility were the prominent themes regarding success. In terms of challenges, small producers felt they were at a disadvantage compared to larger farms. Participants expressed a desire for …
