Bostock And The Forgotten Eeoc, Sandra F. Sperino Nov 2024

Bostock And The Forgotten Eeoc, Sandra F. Sperino

Faculty Publications

In Bostock v. Clayton County, Georgia, the Supreme Court formally recognized that federal discrimination law prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The opinion barely mentioned the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the federal agency charged with enforcing federal discrimination law. Reading Bostock, it would be easy to get the impression that the EEOC played little to no role in the outcome. This Essay reclaims and restores the EEOC's role.

In restoring the EEOC's role in this story, two themes emerge. First, Bostock's methodology erases the administrative agency tasked with enforcing Title VII in ways that are inconsistent …

Sustaining The Legacies Of Black Farmers, John Myers, James Burch, Demetrius Hooks Nov 2024

Sustaining The Legacies Of Black Farmers, John Myers, James Burch, Demetrius Hooks

Professional Agricultural Workers Journal

The experience of Black farmers in the Southern United States is shaped by a legacy of racial inequity and unfavorable public policies that have all but ensured unequal access to fundamental resources such as land, labor, and capital. Rural poverty and land loss through heir property have encumbered access to these resources. Within this context of disenfranchised generations of history, this article contributes to examining and understanding the experiences of Black farmers in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. It seeks to amplify the voices of Black farmers as a step toward providing context for a more inclusive and meaningful …

Is Sunlight The Best Disinfectant? The Role Of Regulation In Addressing Cybersecurity Concerns, Reagan Leverett Nov 2024

Is Sunlight The Best Disinfectant? The Role Of Regulation In Addressing Cybersecurity Concerns, Reagan Leverett

Vanderbilt Law Review

The technological landscape in the United States is changing rapidly, and this transformation carries with it unprecedented challenges for administrators, companies, and investors alike. In particular, cybersecurity concerns are growing in light of the new opportunities for cyber malfeasance in this landscape—opportunities to pillage corporate databases and exploit the sensitive consumer information housed therein. For administrators, these new threats challenge prevailing regulatory frameworks and demand novel solutions. For companies, this landscape brings financial and reputational threats. For stakeholders, the cyber era presents the risk of investment losses and, in some cases, loss of personal data.

The Securities and Exchange Commission …

Population and Public Health Science Faculty Publications

Purpose of Review: Considerable current interest is directed at pharmacological agents for producing significant weight loss. However, healthy lifestyle choices can also lead to clinically meaningful weight loss and improvements in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. Recent Findings: In this review, we summarize the recent research from our PROmoting Successful Weight Loss in Primary CarE in Louisiana (PROPEL) randomized controlled trial and review previous data on the potential benefits of cardiac rehabilitation and exercise training (CRET) programs to produce weight loss and improvements in CVD risk factors. Summary: Although obesity medications are becoming extremely attractive for secondary and even primary …

Validation Of The Quick Mild Cognitive Impairment Screen In An American Sample Of Patients With Mild Cognitive Impairment And Mild Dementia, Dariella A. Fernandez, Suzanne Schmitz, Heather Foil, Robert Brouillette, Jeffrey N. Keller, Robin C. Hilsabeck Nov 2024

Hilsabeck

Clinical Research Faculty Publications

Objective: Early detection of cognitive impairment is critical for patient outcomes, yet cognitive impairment is under identified in primary care settings largely due to time constraints. The Quick Mild Cognitive Impairment (Qmci) screen was developed to address the need for a short cognitive screening instrument (< 5 min) that is sensitive to early cognitive change but has not been validated in the United States (US). The objective of this study was to examine the classification accuracy of the Qmci in participants from two memory specialty (e.g., secondary outpatient) clinics in the US. Methods: Participants were 152 older adults: 87 participants were cognitively normal (CN), 48 were diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and 17 were diagnosed with mild dementia (DEM). Classification accuracy of the Qmci and Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) were compared in participants with and without cognitive impairment. Results: The Qmci demonstrated higher classification accuracy in differentiating CN from cognitively impaired participants (i.e., MCI and DEM) (AUC = 0.82) than the MMSE (AUC = 0.77). The optimal cut-off score for the Qmci was < 67, which achieved a sensitivity of 79% and specificity of 80%. The optimal MMSE cut-off score was < 27, which achieved a sensitivity of 97% and specificity of 43%. Conclusions: The Qmci is a valid cognitive screening instrument for detecting early stages of cognitive impairment in memory clinic samples in the US. Its short administration time and increased specificity for detecting MCI make it an attractive option for use in primary care settings. Further validation of the Qmci is needed, specifically within primary care settings.

Interactive Effects Of Co2, Temperature, And Nutrient Limitation On The Growth And Physiology Of The Marine Coccolithophore Emiliania Huxleyi (Prymnesiophyceae), James P. Bradley, Edward A. Laws

Faculty Publications

The marine coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi (strain PnB 272 B10) was grown in a continuous culture system on a 12:12 light:dark cycle at temperatures from 10 °C to 28 °C under either nutrient-replete or nitrate-limited conditions and at either 493 ppmv (low) or 1003 ppmv (high) partial pressures of CO2 (pCO2). The maximum and minimum nutrient-replete growth rates were 0.751 d−1 at 20 °C and 0.365 d−1 at 10 °C, respectively. Ratios of particulate organic carbon (POC) to particulate inorganic carbon (PIC) were independent of pCO2 and of the degree of nitrate limitation but were temperature dependent and lower …

Combined Toxicity Of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes And Cu2+ On The Growth Of Ryegrass: Effect Of Surface Modification, Dose, And Exposure Time Pattern, Wenwen Xie, Cheng Peng, Weiping Wang, Xiaoyi Chen, Jiaqi Tan, Wei Zhang Nov 2024

Combined Toxicity Of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes And Cu2+ On The Growth Of Ryegrass: Effect Of Surface Modification, Dose, And Exposure Time Pattern, Wenwen Xie, Cheng Peng, Weiping Wang, Xiaoyi Chen, Jiaqi Tan, Wei Zhang

Faculty Publications

The escalating release of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) into the environment has raised concerns due to their potential ecotoxicological impacts. However, their combined phytotoxicity with heavy metals such as copper (Cu) is still unclear. This study investigated the individual and combined toxic effects of MWCNTs (MWCNT, MWCNT-OH, and MWCNT-COOH) and Cu2+ on ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum), uniquely considering different addition orders. The results show that Cu severely inhibited the growth of ryegrass while MWCNTs exhibited a hormesis effect on ryegrass. When MWCNT and Cu were combined, the malondialdehyde (MDA) content in ryegrass showed a 32.39% increase at 20 mg/L MWCNT …

Greenhouse Gas Accounting For Western Australian Agriculture 2022, Johnny Machon, Mandy Curnow, Christophe D'Abbadie Nov 2024

Greenhouse Gas Accounting For Western Australian Agriculture 2022, Johnny Machon, Mandy Curnow, Christophe D'Abbadie

Climate Science Published Reports

This report presents new modelling of the greenhouse gas emissions attributable to Western Australia’s agricultural industries and provides an overview of sequestration at the state level. The report improves and expands on the estimates from previous technical reports by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), most notably Curnow et al. (2022). The report presents a new, much broader picture, capturing not only emissions from agricultural activities in Western Australia (WA), but also the emissions associated with the production of agricultural inputs and the sequestration that occurs on agriculturally managed lands. This broader picture of emissions aligns with …

Persecuted Or Protected: The Role Of Iranian Baha'is In The International Community, Nika Mazloom Nov 2024

Persecuted Or Protected: The Role Of Iranian Baha'is In The International Community, Nika Mazloom

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Religious persecution is, and always has been, rampant, and this is especially the case for the Baha’is in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Yet, little research has been done on how this persecution has led to improvements in protections for different religious minorities, including the Baha’i Faith. This thesis will aim to address that gap and understand whether and how the persecution of Iranian Baha’is advances protections for different religious minorities. In this research I attempt to locate instances of Baha’i persecution-informed religious protection through extensive research of the Baha’i International Community and interviews of religious persecution experts to understand …
