All Dissertations

Despite a rise in survival rates of breast cancer patients due to advances in modern medicine, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women and is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Early detection and a more personalized treatment of breast cancer has slowly improved patient outcomes. Nevertheless, there are impediments to better patient outcomes due to the complexity of the disease physiology. Therefore, there is a demand for a comprehensive understanding of cancer development as well as a need to understand tumor progression for enhanced therapies for patients.

On Pre Open Regular Spaces, Afraa R. Sadek

Baghdad Science Journal

In this paper, certain types of regularity of topological spaces have been highlighted, which fall within the study of generalizations of separation axioms. One of the important axioms of separation is what is called regularity, and the spaces that have this property are not few, and the most important of these spaces are Euclidean spaces. Therefore, limiting this important concept to topology is within a narrow framework, which necessitates the use of generalized open sets to obtain more good characteristics and preserve the properties achieved in general topology. Perhaps the reader will realize through the research that our generalization preserved …

On Some Separation Axioms In Soft Lattice Topological Spaces, Sandhya S. Pai, Baiju T

Baghdad Science Journal

In the realm of topology, various constraints are frequently imposed on the types of topological spaces under examination and these constraints are defined by what are known as separation axioms. Also, the separation axioms can be seen as additional conditions that may be incorporated into the definition of topological spaces. Separation axioms serve various purposes in lattice theory. They provide tools for classifying and comparing different lattices, revealing their structural and topological properties. While traditional separation axioms like T0, T1, T2, etc., still play a role, their interpretation and implications differ in the context of soft sets and lattice structures. …

Trypanosoma cruzi is a protozoan parasite that causes Chagas disease. Globally 6 to 7 million people are infected by this parasite of which 20-30% will progress to develop Chronic Chagasic Cardiomyopathy (CCC). Despite its high disease burden, no clinically approved vaccine exists for the prevention or treatment of CCC. Developing vaccines that can stimulate T. cruzi-specific CD8+ cytotoxic T cells and eliminate infected cells requires targeting parasitic antigens presented on major histocompatibility complex-I (MHC-I) molecules. We utilized mass spectrometry-based immunopeptidomics to investigate which parasitic peptides are displayed on MHC-I of T. cruzi infected cells. Through duplicate experiments, we identified an …

“Without freedom of thought, there can be no such thing as wisdom, and no such thing as public liberty, without freedom of speech.” Benjamin Franklin, Silence Dogwood, No. 8 (July 9, 1722). For this reason, the U.S. Constitution makes clear that the Government cannot abridge free speech based on its content or viewpoint absent compelling and narrowly tailored grounds. Indeed, the protection of all speech is foundational to American democracy. See United States v. The mobile nature of migratory marine animals across jurisdictional boundaries can challenge the management of biodiversity, particularly under global environmental change. While projections of climate-driven habitat change can reveal whether marine species are predicted to gain or lose habitat in the future, geopolitical boundaries and differing governance regimes may influence animals’ abilities to thrive in new areas. Broad geographic movements and diverse governance approaches elicit the need for strong international collaboration to holistically manage and conserve these shared migratory species. In this study, we use data from the Tagging of Pacific Predators program to demonstrate the feasibility of using climate-driven …

Oxidants produced through endogenous metabolism or encountered in the environment react directly with reactive sites in biological macromolecules. Many proteins, in particular, are susceptible to oxidative damage, which can lead to their altered structure and function. Such structural and functional changes trigger a cascade of events that influence key components of the proteostasis network. Here, we highlight recent advances in our understanding of how cells respond to the challenges of protein folding and metabolic alterations that occur during oxidative stress. Immediately after an oxidative insult, cells selectively block the translation of most new proteins and shift molecular chaperones from folding …
