International Methods Of Offender Profile Construction, Standardization, And Effective Criminal Investigative Processes, Savannah Peoples Dec 2024

International Methods Of Offender Profile Construction, Standardization, And Effective Criminal Investigative Processes, Savannah Peoples

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Offender profiling is a tool used within criminal investigations to infer offender characteristics according to evidence collected from a crime scene. The practice of offender profiling has been applied since the Roman era, empirically developed, and recently popularized in media depictions. Existing studies demonstrate that there is a lack of peer reviewed literature that examines current methods of criminal profile construction, opportunities for standardization, and effective criminal investigative processes. Motivation for this study came after reviewing research that revealed high rates of serious and violent international serial offending, noted as a major challenge for law enforcement agencies, and a significant …

Cd47 Signaling Induces Hepatic Cell Death And Microglia Activation During Hepatic Encephalopathy, Ashwin Jhawer, Gabriel Frampton, Shadikchhya Maya Bhattarai, Sharon Demorrow, Matthew Mcmillin Dec 2024

Cd47 Signaling Induces Hepatic Cell Death And Microglia Activation During Hepatic Encephalopathy, Ashwin Jhawer, Gabriel Frampton, Shadikchhya Maya Bhattarai, Sharon Demorrow, Matthew Mcmillin

Acute liver failure results from severe hepatic injury and can lead to neurological dysfunction known as hepatic encephalopathy (HE). Thrombospondin-1 can contribute to HE by increasing cerebral edema and microglia activation in the azoxymethane (AOM) mouse model. CD47 is a receptor for TSP1 and can directly modulate inflammation in numerous disease states. However, the role of CD47 in the progression of HE is currently unknown. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the role of CD47 in liver and brain pathology in the AOM mouse model of HE. C57Bl/6 or CD47 knockout (CD47−/−) were administered AOM to induce …

Simple Improvements In Vector Design Afford Substantial Gains In Aav Delivery Of Aggregation-Slowing Aβ Variants, Ella Borgenheimer, Cameron Trueblood, Bryan L Nguyen, William R Lagor, Joanna L Jankowsky Dec 2024

Adeno-associated virus (AAV) gene therapy for neurological disease has gained traction due to stunning advances in capsid evolution for CNS targeting. With AAV brain delivery now in focus, conventional improvements in viral expression vectors offer a complementary route for optimizing gene delivery. We previously introduced a novel AAV gene therapy to slow amyloid aggregation in the brain based on neuronal release of an Aβ sequence variant that inhibited fibrilization of wild-type Aβ. Here we explore three coding elements of the virally delivered DNA plasmid in an effort to maximize the production of therapeutic peptide in the brain. We demonstrate that …

Course Registration Practices At A Jesuit University: Practicing Critical Hope To Address Barriers To Access And Belonging, Corey Knadler, Laura Diaz Martinez, Annmarie Caño, Kirk R. Anders, Yolanda Gallardo, Nancy L. Staub Dec 2024

Course Registration Practices At A Jesuit University: Practicing Critical Hope To Address Barriers To Access And Belonging, Corey Knadler, Laura Diaz Martinez, Annmarie Caño, Kirk R. Anders, Yolanda Gallardo, Nancy L. Staub

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Solidarity and critical hope support faculty and staff who wish to accompany students, read the current reality of their experience, and imagine new practices that can rectify injustices and promote access and belonging. Here, we describe an example of this praxis by responding to student concerns about injustices in a course registration process. With some exceptions, undergraduates at this institution register for classes according to their earned college credits. At first glance, this meritocratic system shows care to students by recognizing their hard work. However, our analysis shows that it also discriminates against underserved groups of students. Using 10 years …

Weaving Care Threads: Matrixial Encounters In Teacher Professional Learning, Misty Paterson Dec 2024

Weaving Care Threads: Matrixial Encounters In Teacher Professional Learning, Misty Paterson

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

The need for increased care in today’s classrooms is becoming undeniable. Yet, teacher shortages, budget cutbacks, and mental health crises makes injecting care into our field feel evermore demanding and depleting. What if abundant and systemic care was at our fingertips? This article shares the voices and processes of six seasoned, “non-artist” educators as they co-created a learning space that prioritized a relational, social-based, caring sensibility through art-care practices. The author brings the lens of Ettinger's Matrixial Theory to her practitioner inquiry into caring affect through Spontaneous Creation-Making (Bickel & Fisher, 2023) with promising and pragmatic implications for teacher educators.

Gestating And Co-Becoming With Ettingerian Maxtrixial Pedagogy, Barbara Bickel Dec 2024

Gestating And Co-Becoming With Ettingerian Maxtrixial Pedagogy, Barbara Bickel

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

This article seeks to infuse and enrich the spheres of Arts and Education through a nascent introduction of Ettingerian Matrixial Pedagogy. To articulate this, I weave together the practices of Gestare Art Collective, which we describe as “matrixial infused education,” the “placental thinking” of Nané Jordan with my own thinking, art making and teaching. This article unfolds through interlacing theory and reflections on teachings found within art practices of Ma Poses, Womb Walking, Nap-Ins, and Spontaneous Creation-Making, along with examples of pedagogical artworkings: Metramorphosis and Muted Colours of Grief. The article closes with a poetic métissage inquiry that became—a Matrixial …

Aesthetic Wit(H)Nessing In Times Of Trouble: Propositions For Working Affirmatively With Difference Within Matrixial Pedagogical Practice., Nike Romano

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

This article explores how Bracha Ettinger’s notion of matrixial aesthetic wit(h)nessing fosters opportunities for dealing with memory and trauma in classroom encounters during times of trouble. Drawing on my experience of teaching a history of art and design curriculum at a University of Technology in South Africa, the intention is to highlight the crucial role that Ettingerian Matrixial Theory (EMT) plays in building trust in troubled educational spaces. Concerned with the ethical implications of surfacing and transforming traumas, the inquiry begins with a discussion on how South Africa (SA), and SA Higher Education (HE) in particular, are saturated with traumatic …

This program focuses on the practical application of portfolio management theory and team effort to produce good investment results.

Environmental Concerns: Thinking Beyond The Traditional Elections, Muhammad Faisal Ali Dec 2024

Environmental Concerns: Thinking Beyond The Traditional Elections, Muhammad Faisal Ali

CBER Conference

A sustainable future is intricately tied to maintaining a sustainable environment, both on a global scale and within individual countries. In 2023, recorded temperatures reached unprecedented highs, signaling a concerning trend toward global warming and prompting widespread alarm. These circumstances have spurred increased global attention and a shift away from intensive emission practices towards more environmentally friendly approaches. This research provides empirical evidence on the monetary value of lost environmental benefits due to the production of massive ballot papers for the elections. Focusing on the environmental impact of the 2024 General Election, the study also considers the environmental implications beyond …
