Medically important pathogenic fungi invade vertebrate tissue and are considered primary when part of their nature life cycle is associated with an animal host and are usually able to infect immunocompetent hosts. Opportunistic fungal pathogens complete their life cycle in environmental habitats or occur as commensals within or on the vertebrate body, but under certain conditions can thrive upon infecting humans. The extent of host damage in opportunistic infections largely depends on the portal and modality of entry as well as on the host's immune and metabolic status. Diseases caused by primary pathogens and common opportunists, causing the top approximately …

Comparing Physiological, Psychological, And Performance Changes Between Myo-Reps Vs Traditional Hypertrophy Protocols, Antonella V. Schwarz Dec 2024

Comparing Physiological, Psychological, And Performance Changes Between Myo-Reps Vs Traditional Hypertrophy Protocols, Antonella V. Schwarz

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

In long-term athlete development, it is common to emphasize hypertrophic adaptations during the beginning training phases prior to focusing on strength and power performance. The purpose of this study was to compare the physiological, psychological, and performance differences between myo-reps (MYO) vs. traditional (TRAD) hypertrophy protocols in trained n=8 male subjects over eight weeks. Current literature suggests hypertrophy may be optimized through 3-6 sets of 6-12 repetitions at 60-80% of one-repetition maximum (IRM) with 1-3 minutes of rest per set. However, alternative hypertrophy protocols such as MYO are underexplored. This quantitative experimental study assessed MYO vs TRAD protocols on hypertrophy …

Detransitioners: Dealing With The False Promises Of Gender Transition, Diane M. Roselli Dec 2024

Detransitioners: Dealing With The False Promises Of Gender Transition, Diane M. Roselli

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Until recently, sex change surgery was rarely performed and on adults only; however, the discovery of cross-sex hormones, advances in plastic surgery, and the Dutch protocol contributed to the use of a treatment regimen for children consisting of puberty blockers (GnRHa), cross-sex hormones, and sex reassignment surgery, known as gender-affirmative treatment (GAT). A growing number of individuals, who opted to undergo the transition process, are detransitioning by ceasing hormone therapy or requesting corrective/reconstructive surgery. Their lived experiences are relatively unknown because most detransitioners drop out of treatment, are silenced by trans activists, and are not acknowledged by medical organizations. This …

The Undoing Of Eve: A Biblical-Theological Critique Of John's Portrait Of The Female Image Of God, Melissa A. Fields Dec 2024

The Undoing Of Eve: A Biblical-Theological Critique Of John's Portrait Of The Female Image Of God, Melissa A. Fields

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This dissertation offers a fresh exploration of the Gospel of John through a biblical theological lens, tracing the dynamic motif of the female imago Dei and its development within the Johannine narrative. By merging literary analysis with a close examination of the biblical portrayal of femininity, the study sheds light on how the Fourth Evangelist reimagines the female image of God within the context of a new creation, presenting a vision that may reshape the complementarian-egalitarian debate within today’s Christian communities. Applying the “worldview-story” biblical-theological approach, the researcher asserts that John’s positive depiction of femininity suggests a restoration of woman’s …

Ensuring Careful Interpretation And Application Of The Bible Through The Lens Of The Covenants, James Kenneth Rainwater Dec 2024

Ensuring Careful Interpretation And Application Of The Bible Through The Lens Of The Covenants, James Kenneth Rainwater

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

For centuries, believers in Jesus Christ have turned to the Bible to discover His will for their life. For the most part, this discovery has resulted in joy and significance and has benefited the journeys of millions. However, there have been many examples where the misunderstanding and misinterpretation of the Bible has brought about devastating consequences. Wolves have crept in and used the Bible for their own nefarious purposes. This paper offers a bridge for believers to navigate many of the difficult passages of the Bible and their behavioral application. Specifically, this is achieved through a closer look at how …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the impact of spousal support on firefighters in South Florida who have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The Theory of Stress and Coping by Richard Lazarus proposed that stress occurs when situations are negatively interpreted, leading to health problems when adequate coping mechanisms are not utilized (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984). The way in which an individual copes or changes the cognitive and behavioral efforts to manage specific external and/or internal demands influences mental and physical outcomes, including PTSD. This qualitative phenomenological design allowed participants to interpret their lived experiences as they …

The continued emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants and the threat of future Sarbecovirus zoonoses have spurred the design of vaccines that can induce broad immunity against multiple coronaviruses. Here, we use computational methods to infer ancestral phylogenetic reconstructions of receptor binding domain (RBD) sequences across multiple Sarbecovirus clades and incorporate them into a multivalent adenoviral-vectored vaccine. Mice immunized with this pan-Sarbecovirus vaccine are protected in the upper and lower respiratory tracts against infection by historical and contemporary SARS-CoV-2 variants, SARS-CoV, and pre-emergent SHC014 and Pangolin/GD coronavirus strains. Using genetic and immunological approaches, we demonstrate that vaccine-induced protection unexpectedly is conferred principally …

Neutrophils are the most abundant cell type in the airways of tuberculosis patients. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection induces the release of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs); however, the molecular regulation and impact of NET release on Mtb pathogenesis are unknown. We find that during Mtb infection in neutrophils, PAD4 citrullinates histones to decondense chromatin that gets released as NETs in a manner that can maintain neutrophil viability and promote Mtb replication. Type I interferon promotes the formation of chromatin-containing vesicles that allow NET release without compromising plasma membrane integrity. Analysis of nonhuman primate granulomas supports a model where neutrophils are exposed …

Colonic Derotation Revisited: The "Deloyers Procedure" For Long-Segment Hirschsprung Disease., Ismael Elhalaby, Irene Isabel P. Lim, Elizaveta Bokova, Ifeanyi K Egbuchulem, Rebecca M. Rentea

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Long-segment Hirschsprung disease (HSCR) presents significant challenges in surgical management, often requiring extensive bowel mobilization and creative techniques to achieve tension-free anastomosis. Colonic derotation offers a viable solution for preserving bowel length and maintaining the ileocecal valve, which is crucial for postoperative bowel function. The procedure involves extensive colonic mobilization and strategic vascular divisions of the right and middle colic vessels while preserving the ileocolic and marginal arteries, followed by a 180° counterclockwise rotation of the colon around the ileocolic vascular axis. Critical aspects include ensuring proper bowel orientation post-derotation, the careful assessment of potential compression points, and the preservation …

Coastal Waters Of The World: Trends,Threats And Strategies By Don Hinrichsen, C. Nicholas Raphael Dec 2024

Coastal Waters Of The World: Trends,Threats And Strategies By Don Hinrichsen, C. Nicholas Raphael

The Geographical Bulletin

Without doubt Coastal Waters of the World is one of the most comprehensive books to document diverse regional problems in the near and offshore marine coastal zones of the earth. Following a brief introduction two chapters are devoted to riparian population patterns, and marine resources and fisheries. Fourteen chapters are then presented outlining issues along the earth 's most obvious boundary-the zone separating the land and sea. Each regional chapter (e.g. Latin America, North and Baltic Seas, East Africa) has a similar format: characteristics of population and the state of environmental quality followed by a discussion of management efforts and …

Soils And Geomorphology (3rd Ed.) By Peter W. Birkeland, Mike Applegarth Dec 2024

Soils And Geomorphology (3rd Ed.) By Peter W. Birkeland, Mike Applegarth

The Geographical Bulletin

Peter Birkeland's Soils and Geomorphology (3rd ed.) defines 'soil geomorphology' as, "the study of soils and their use in evaluating landform evolution and age, landform stability, surface processes, and past climates." Indeed, the book addresses these issues and then does more; it bridges the gap between geomorphology and pedology. The book can serve as a text for the advanced student in soil science, pedology, or geomorphology as well as a reference guide for the expert soil scientist. In short, Soils and Geomorphology is a 'must have' publication for all who work in the fields of soils and geomorphology.

Marketing A 'Sense Of Place': Representations Of Africa In Ecotour Web Sites, Daniel P. Donaldson, James A. Tyner

The Geographical Bulletin

Patterns and forms of international tourism have changed significantly over the past three decades. Specifically, ecotourism has emerged as an ostensibly environmentally and culturally sensitive option to more traditional forms of tourist activities. Taking advantage of the proliferation of modern communications technologies, ecotour agencies have utilized the World Wide Web to facilitate the marketing and promotion of their tours. This paper examines the implications of Webbased technology and tourism. Through a qualitative analysis of 30 ecotour Websites, we identify and examine dominant discourses which perpetuate the representation of Africa as a dark, empty, wild continent, still open for Western appropriation. …

Projections And Perceptions Editorial Comment: Geographic Seeing Eyes: Mind And Lens, Barbara A. Weightman Dec 2024

Projections And Perceptions Editorial Comment: Geographic Seeing Eyes: Mind And Lens, Barbara A. Weightman

The Geographical Bulletin

What kind of camera do you use? How do you get those "people shots"? These are only two of many questions I am asked regarding slide photography. A geographic photo- one showing patterns, relationships, characteristics, and so on-is much more a product of the geographic mind than ofthe camera lens. The type of camera you possess is a small part of the equation for good "geographic photography." Of course it is nice to have wide angle and zoom lenses: much photographic equipment is loaded with "bells and whistles." You can even purchase a multi-pocketed jacket to hold them all. However, …

Beyond The Equity Power Of Bankruptcy Courts: Toxic Tort Liabilities In Chapter 11 Cases, Kaighn Smith Dec 2024

Beyond The Equity Power Of Bankruptcy Courts: Toxic Tort Liabilities In Chapter 11 Cases, Kaighn Smith

Maine Law Review

In 1982, three asbestos product manufacturers filed voluntary petitions for business reorganization under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code. The common reason for each of these filings was that tort liabilities threatened the financial survival of the corporation. Never, in the history of United States bankruptcy law, had any business sought bankruptcy relief for such a reason. By 1985, two more firms, another asbestos product manufacturer and a pharmaceutical company, filed Chapter 11 petitions for the same reason. The torts of these "debtors" in bankruptcy are similar; they extend from the manufacture and wide-spread marketing of products that …

Handicapped Workers: Who Should Bear The Burden Of Proving Job Qualifications?, June Zellers Schau Dec 2024

Handicapped Workers: Who Should Bear The Burden Of Proving Job Qualifications?, June Zellers Schau

Maine Law Review

Joining a growing number of jurisdictions in 1973, the Maine Legislature amended the fair employment sections of the Maine Human Rights Act (the MHRA) to extend equal employment opportunity protection to all physically disabled workers. Nearly a decade later the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, sitting as the Law Court, defined unlawful employer treatment of handicapped workers in Maine Human Rights Commission v. Canadian Pacific, Ltd. The Law Court held that an employment decision based on a worker's handicap constitutes an admission of discrimination that shifts the burden of persuasion to the employer to prove either that all workers with similar …

Wilderness, Trust, And Finality: The Baxter State Park Snowmobile Dispute, Ellen Kandoian, Brooke E. Barnes Dec 2024

Wilderness, Trust, And Finality: The Baxter State Park Snowmobile Dispute, Ellen Kandoian, Brooke E. Barnes

Maine Law Review

The recent controversies surrounding the use of snowmobiles in Baxter State Park exemplify the human essence of the trust relationship and the law's awkwardness in addressing the inherently nonlegalistic principles of trust. Baxter State Park is an area of 201,018 acres in northern Maine, purchased by former Governor Percival Proctor Baxter and then donated to the State of Maine in trust. The park includes Mount Katahdin, the highest mountain in Maine and the head of the Appalachian Trail. As Chief Justice McKusick wrote in a recent decision construing the trust, "in its combination of size, uniqueness, permanence, and vision, his …

Rhizobacterial Isolates From The Native Plant Ceanothus Velutinus Promote Growth In Two Genotypes Of Tall Fescue, Ananta Raj Devkota, Sukhmanjot Kaur, Amita Kaundal

Plants, Soils and Climate Student Research

Global warming-induced climate change haunts the world, posing a critical threat to plant health and crop production. Overusing chemical fertilizers and pesticides poses a significant threat to soil health. Ceanothus velutinus (snowbrush) is a drought-tolerant, actinorhizal native plant found in the Intermountain West region of the US that harbors many plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). In this study, we evaluated the effects of PGPR CK-06, CK-22, CK-44, and CK-50 from C. velutinus on the growth and development of two tall fescue genotypes: (i) a lawn-type tall fescue blend and (ii) an endophyte-free forage-type tall fescue known as Armory. Tall fescue plants …
