Development Of Potentiometric Aptasensor For The Detection Of Escherichia Coli, Chalinee Auanphui Jan 2025

Development Of Potentiometric Aptasensor For The Detection Of Escherichia Coli, Chalinee Auanphui

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

A potentiometric aptasensor was developed for the rapid and label-free detection of Escherichia coli (E. coli), a major food- and water-borne pathogen of public health concern. The sensor utilized a laser-induced graphene (LIG) electrode fabricated by laser engraving on a polyimide substrate, followed by modification with an ion marker, coating with a carboxylated poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC–COOH) membrane, and immobilization of an E. coli-specific aptamer. The remaining surface was blocked with bovine serum albumin (BSA) to minimize nonspecific adsorption. Detection was based on changes in ion exchange between the ion marker and membrane upon the specific binding of E. coli to …

Gel Based Sensing Platforms For Ammonia Detection, Patita Salee Jan 2025

Gel Based Sensing Platforms For Ammonia Detection, Patita Salee

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This research focuses on the development of two biopolymer-based colorimetric platforms for ammonia detection in environmental water and gaseous samples. To detect ammonia in water samples, an agarose hydrogel membrane containing salicylate, hypochlorite, and sodium nitroprusside was incorporated into a flow analysis system to perform the Berthelot reaction within the gel. Ammonium in the sample was converted to monochloramine in an alkaline reagent stream, and its subsequent interaction with the sensing membrane yielded an indosalicylate blue chromophore, causing the gel to change from pale yellow to green–blue as the ammonia concentration increased. Under the optimal operating conditions, the method provided …

The Effects Of Reciprocal Teaching On Improving Reading Comprehension In Secondary Students With Learning Disabilities, Christopher Gilmartin Jan 2025

The Effects Of Reciprocal Teaching On Improving Reading Comprehension In Secondary Students With Learning Disabilities, Christopher Gilmartin

Education Masters Theses

I was introduced to a reading strategy called reciprocal teaching. Placing an emphasis on group work, reciprocal teaching allows students to investigate the text and deepen understanding of it. Since I am an actor and I thoroughly analyze text daily, I wanted to thread the concepts together and to impart my knowledge. This made me wonder what would happen if reciprocal teaching was implemented in a secondary special education classroom in the hopes of improving reading comprehension. The research question I sought to answer became: Does the strategy of reciprocal teaching help improve the reading comprehension skills of high school …

A Woman’S World Through The Lens Of Socialized Politics: How Accurate Knowledge Politically And Socially Empowers A Woman’S Autonomy, Claire G. Herzog Jan 2025

A Woman’S World Through The Lens Of Socialized Politics: How Accurate Knowledge Politically And Socially Empowers A Woman’S Autonomy, Claire G. Herzog

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Women have dealt with being perceived as inferior to men, defective, and in need of control. My research draws a connection between the ways societal beliefs, judicial action and political action interact with each other to reinforce and reproduce these limiting beliefs about women. The interaction between these institutions result in underlying policies that target women's rights, silencing their voices and sense of independence, all while aiming to control the female body completely. Despite the perception that modern society has moved away from the sexist beliefs that had been created and ingrained into society centuries ago, we are left with …

Promoting Participation And Self-Efficacy Among Youth With Disabilities In Community-Based Vocational Education, Allison Hollender Jan 2025

Promoting Participation And Self-Efficacy Among Youth With Disabilities In Community-Based Vocational Education, Allison Hollender

Doctoral Projects

Occupational therapy, with its focus on participation, contextual adaptation, and strength-based practice, is uniquely suited to support the growth and inclusion of youth in transition (Angell et al., 2018; Cahill et al., 2020; Carroll et al., 2025). Research indicates that transitional-aged youth (TAY) with disabilities, ages 14-24, are less likely to graduate from high school, pursue postsecondary education, or live independently (BLS, 2024; Cheng & Shaewitz, 2022; Cook et al., 2015). These disparities are compounded by occupational deprivation, or limited opportunities for meaningful participation, which can negatively impact long-term self-efficacy and belonging (Arbesman & Logsdon, 2011; Cahill et al., 2020). …

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology

Acute radiation syndrome (ARS) occurs when hematopoietic or gastrointestinal cells are damaged by radiation exposure causing DNA damage to the bone marrow and gastrointestinal epithelial stem cell populations. In these highly proliferative cell types, DNA damage inhibits stem cell repopulation. In humans and animals, this inability to regenerate stem cells is lethal. Within this manuscript, several compounds, Amifostine, Captopril, Ciprofloxacin, PrC-210, 5-AED (5-androstene-3β,17β-diol), and 5-AET (5-androstene-3β,7β,17B-triol), are assessed for their ability to protect against ARS in an in vitro and/or in vivo setting. ARS was accomplished by irradiating mouse bone marrow cells or rat intestinal epithelial (IEC-6) cells in vitro …

Family, Faith And Nation: The Roberts Court And The Global Pivot Against Legal Liberalism, Aziz Z. Huq, Tom Ginsburg

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

The Roberts Court has veered sharply in a culturally conservative direction. Traditional solidarities of faith, family, and nation have been elevated above the individual autonomy interests that motivated the justices in the twentieth century. The Supreme Court’s jurisprudence in this vein complements and is reinforced by changes in public law more generally—for example, in recent executive orders that amplify the same values. In legal scholarship, this jurisprudential shift is pervasively framed in terms of domestic electoral politics, in particular as a product of Republican dominance of the presidency and the Senate at key moments.

But expand the analytic lens outward, …

Agonistic Federalism, Aziz Z. Huq, Zachary D. Clopton Jan 2025

Agonistic Federalism, Aziz Z. Huq, Zachary D. Clopton

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

It’s been called the “oldest question” of American constitutional law: How does the national government deal with its sovereign subnational states? Judges and scholars have tried to capture this dynamic via theories of “dual federalism,” “process federalism,” “cooperative federalism,” or “federalism by integration.” But all these models suddenly seem to have superseded, and even perhaps rendered obsolete, by an unexpected step-change in the intensity of federal-state conflicts. In the place of longstanding federalism models, this article demonstrates, an underappreciated form of intergovernmental relations has emerged. We call this model “agonistic federalism.” The article’s aim is to introduce and theorize this …

Size Structure Of Black Crappie And Bluegill In Northern, Eastern, Western, And Southern Minnesota, Ray Anderson Jan 2025

Size Structure Of Black Crappie And Bluegill In Northern, Eastern, Western, And Southern Minnesota, Ray Anderson

Journal of Earth and Life Science

Fish size structure is an important factor in a fishery population. Panfish such as black crappie Pomoxis nigromaculatus and bluegill Lepomis macrochirus play a major role in the health of fisheries. Five lakes from southern, northern, eastern, and western Minnesota were selected for analysis. Data were collected using standard sampling methods, including gill nets, electrofishing, and fyke nets. Length-frequency distributions were created to assess size structure in each region. Relative abundance was measured using catch per unit effort. Data analysis included a one-way ANOVA to compare Proportional Size Distribution (PSD) values and the distribution of fish sizes among regions. Chi-square …

Comparison Of Hoop Nets To Trap Nets In Sampling Panfish, Jayden R, Alsleben Jan 2025

Comparison Of Hoop Nets To Trap Nets In Sampling Panfish, Jayden R, Alsleben

Journal of Earth and Life Science

Panfish including bluegill Lepomis macrochirus and black crappie Pomoxis nigromaculatus are gamefish species of significance found in Minnesota. Hoop nets and trap nets are two types of gear that can be used to sample these fish. Fisheries managers and anglers alike are interested in the best tactics to capture panfish. The behavior of fish, including bluegill and black crappie, change throughout the sampling season and make it difficult to assume accurate representations. Trap nets have historically been adequate in sampling near shore populations, but questions surrounding the gear have allowed other options to be pursued. The objective of this study …

The Relationship Between Plant Density And Microplastic Concentration In The Water In Lake Bemidji, Mn, Arian Garcia Jan 2025

The Relationship Between Plant Density And Microplastic Concentration In The Water In Lake Bemidji, Mn, Arian Garcia

Journal of Earth and Life Science

Microplastics, plastic particles smaller than 5 mm, are an increasing environmental threat, particularly due to their widespread distribution and toxicity. While much research has focused on larger freshwater and marine ecosystems, the presence and impacts of microplastics in smaller inland lakes remain less understood. This study investigates the relationship between plant density and microplastic concentrations in Lake Bemidji, a smaller freshwater lake. A total of 30 water samples were collected across varying vegetation conditions, ranging from open water (0%) to 90% plant coverage. Microplastics were identified and categorized into six morphological types: fibers, fragments, films, spheres/beads, and foam. The samples …

A Sample Of Fish Communities In Beaver Ponds Of Northern Minnesota, Reed Cumberland, Rose Kuhlmann Jan 2025

A Sample Of Fish Communities In Beaver Ponds Of Northern Minnesota, Reed Cumberland, Rose Kuhlmann

Journal of Earth and Life Science

The North American beaver Castor canadensis is an ecosystem engineer and a keystone species to the environment. Beaver inhabit ponds and construct dams to build ponds that provide habitat for certain fish. Little information is provided on the species of fish that live in beaver ponds. The objective of this study is to sample the fish communities in beaver ponds while comparing the effectiveness of two styles of minnow traps. Twelve beaver ponds were selected in the Bemidji area to be sampled. The quantity and species caught in each style of trap were recorded to compare effectiveness of each trap …

Effects Of Round-Up On The Environment, Sandra J. Marcu Jan 2025

Effects Of Round-Up On The Environment, Sandra J. Marcu

Journal of Earth and Life Science

Many people around the world have used and still currently use Roundup but are unaware of the effects it has on the environment. Roundup is a spray on application weedkiller that is widely used around the world today both residentially and commercially. It enables its user to grow a garden or a field of crops with a no-tilling approach to eliminate weeds. It is a well-known and popular choice for killing weeds that has been around since the mid 1970’s (Oca, 2017). John Franz, a Monsanto scientist discovered that glyphosate (main ingredient in Roundup) was an herbicide or weedkiller, and …

Does Depth Affect Zebra Mussel Length In Scalp Lake?, Zanden Mellen Jan 2025

Does Depth Affect Zebra Mussel Length In Scalp Lake?, Zanden Mellen

Journal of Earth and Life Science

Since its first sighting in 1996, zebra mussels Dreissena polymorpha have been confirmed in hundreds of Minnesota lakes. Not only were they found in lakes, but they are also found in rivers too. With lack of effective treatments to impede their spread, zebra mussels continue to colonize new areas causing ecological as well as economic harm. The objective of this study was to see if there was a relationship between a zebra mussel length and the depth, they are found using shell length (mm) and depth (cm). The comparison of zebra mussel length and depth was done by performing a …

Age Class Is Not Related To Size Or Composition Of Home Ranges Among Suburban White-Tailed Deer During Parturition, Nathan D. Pyburn Jan 2025

Age Class Is Not Related To Size Or Composition Of Home Ranges Among Suburban White-Tailed Deer During Parturition, Nathan D. Pyburn

Journal of Earth and Life Science

How white-tailed deer use the landscape in an urban environment can help us understand the effects of urbanization on deer populations. White-tailed deer form observable matriarchal hierarchies in studied populations. This study examines the matriarchal structure, home range size, and home range composition of 25 collared white-tailed deer within the city limits of Bemidji, MN. The results found no significant difference between age class and home range size or composition. However, movement metrics from yearling and mature age classes were more similar than the juvenile age class females. I propose this is because social acceptance between mature females was higher …

The Growth Of Yellow Perch In Relation To Environmental Factors, Hector Montoya Jr. Jan 2025

The Growth Of Yellow Perch In Relation To Environmental Factors, Hector Montoya Jr.

Journal of Earth and Life Science

Yellow perch Perca flavescens is one of the major fishes in northern Minnesota. These fish are important to the ecosystems they live in but, these   ecosystems are subject to change at anytime if the factors present themselves. Research was done in the past that   studied water temperature, air temperature, climate events, and human activity showing their effect on fish growth. This study looks at the same four factors that influence the ecosystem in Lake Bemiji during the month of September in the years of 2017-2024. Each factor is compared to the average total lengths of yellow perch to test for …

Relationship Of Utricle And Trap Door Size On Common Bladderworts Utricularia Macrorhiza, Tegwen Romportl Jan 2025

Relationship Of Utricle And Trap Door Size On Common Bladderworts Utricularia Macrorhiza, Tegwen Romportl

Journal of Earth and Life Science

The common bladderwort Utricularia macrorhiza is a carnivorous aquatic plant that captures organisms with its bladders. This study was aimed at setting the stage for future research which might determine if U. macrorhiza could be a biological method of control for invasive species. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between utricle and trap door sizes and to gather data on the size ranges of these two morphological features. A regression analysis was used to obtain results which showed there was enough evidence to suggest that the size of bladderwort trap doors have a significant, positive relationship …

Characters In Copyright Law: Extraordinary Rules For Ordinary Content, Robert F. Helfing Jan 2025

Characters In Copyright Law: Extraordinary Rules For Ordinary Content, Robert F. Helfing

Marquette Intellectual Property & Innovation Law Review

Characters are a breed apart in copyright law. Only they have a special standard of creativity. Only they must have unique elements to qualify for protection. Only they are exempt from analysis as derivative works when they appear in multiple works, and only they are required to maintain consistent features in order to maintain protection previously earned. These and other idiosyncrasies do not follow naturally from precedent or statutory law, but operate heedless of and even contrary to legal authority.

This article shows that, after fifty years of undifferentiated treatment, the courts suddenly began to apply divergent rules to characters. …

Effects Of Liraglutide On The Gut Bacterial Community, Jami Anne Bull Jan 2025

Effects Of Liraglutide On The Gut Bacterial Community, Jami Anne Bull

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Overweight and obesity are major health concerns associated with metabolic disorders and gut dysbiosis. Treatment options such as GLP-1 receptor agonists, like liraglutide, promote weight loss and improve insulin sensitivity; however, their impact on the gut bacterial community remains unclear. This study investigated the effects of liraglutide on the gut bacterial community of diet-induced obese (DIO) mice using Illumina DNA sequencing of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene. My study used twelve-week-old male C57BL/6J DIO mice. They were placed on a high-fat diet and treated with liraglutide (0.2 mg/kg) via daily subcutaneous injection for 14 Days. High-fat and low-fat diets control …

The Influence Of Flower-Microbe Interactions On Bumble Bee Behavior And Gut Microbiome Composition, Success Chiamaka Ekemezie Jan 2025

The Influence Of Flower-Microbe Interactions On Bumble Bee Behavior And Gut Microbiome Composition, Success Chiamaka Ekemezie

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

This thesis examines how microbial interactions in floral nectar and environmental variation influence bumble bee (Bombus spp.) foraging behavior and gut microbiome composition. Pollen germination experiments and behavioral assays in the lab tested whether Metschnikowia reukaufii (yeast) and Acinetobacter nectaris (bacteria) induce pollen germination and bursting in nectar and affect bee behavior subsequently. Both microbes reduced intact pollen, but bees did not alter flower preference. Furthermore, the study also assessed how floral and bee community composition shaped gut microbiome composition across six Missouri prairies. Using amplicon-sequenced fungal ITS and bacterial 16S rRNA genes, I found that fungal microbiome composition varied …

Cgrp Modulation Of Intracellular Calcium Levels In Trigeminal Ganglion Neurons And Glia, Nicole M. Nalley Jan 2025

Cgrp Modulation Of Intracellular Calcium Levels In Trigeminal Ganglion Neurons And Glia, Nicole M. Nalley

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Elevated levels of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) are implicated in migraine and TMD pathology, but its effects on the excitability state of Aδ and C-fiber neurons and glia have not been investigated. The goal of this study was to determine changes mediated by CGRP on intracellular calcium levels in trigeminal ganglion neurons and glia in response to depolarizing stimulation. Intracellular calcium levels were determined in Aδ and C-fiber neurons of primary trigeminal ganglion cultures obtained from neonatal Sprague Dawley rats using Fura-2 and fluorescent microscopy. Cells were left untreated or preincubated for 2 hours with CGRP, then incubated with the …

Spatial And Temporal Shifts In Bacterial Communities And Nutrient Removal In Two Springfield Wastewater Facilities, Rubina Sherchan Jan 2025

Spatial And Temporal Shifts In Bacterial Communities And Nutrient Removal In Two Springfield Wastewater Facilities, Rubina Sherchan

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Bacterial communities play a central role in the biological nutrient removal and overall performance of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). However, very few is known about the spatial and seasonal dynamics of these communities. This study explores the spatial and seasonal variations in bacterial community composition across multiple treatment stages in two municipal WWTPs—Southwest (SWTP) and Northwest (NWTP)—in Springfield, Missouri. Using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, I analyzed 87 samples collected during summer and winter of 2024 from influent, sludge, aeration basins, clarifiers, and final effluent stages. I retrieved 16.4 million (summer) and 3.2 million (winter) sequences. Proteobacteria dominated both seasons …

Preventing Chemical And Biological Attacks: Enhanced Threats Requiring Enhanced Solutions, Alex Elliot Ottoni-Belval Jan 2025

Preventing Chemical And Biological Attacks: Enhanced Threats Requiring Enhanced Solutions, Alex Elliot Ottoni-Belval

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Chemical weapons (CW) and biological weapons (BW) are becoming more dangerous for experts to employ and more accessible to amateurs. Despite CW and BW attacks throughout history that killed and maimed millions of people, the international community has failed to establish meaningful consequences to prevent them. Agreements such as the Chemical Weapons Convention and the Biological Weapons Convention vow to eliminate and reduce the effects of CWs and BWs but lack respected response precedents and capabilities. The limited and inconsistent enforcement has inadvertently allowed CWs and BWs to become plausible weapons, especially to gain asymmetric advantages, while modern developments exasperate …

Investigating Social Attenuation Of The Stress Response In Juvenile Northern Cottonmouths (Agkistrodon Piscivorus), Alyssa Owens Jan 2025

Investigating Social Attenuation Of The Stress Response In Juvenile Northern Cottonmouths (Agkistrodon Piscivorus), Alyssa Owens

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

When social organisms encounter a stress-inducing event, the presence of a conspecific can dampen the physiological and/or behavioral response elicited by the stressor. This concept, termed ‘social buffering’, has been well documented in mammals, but there are few studies investigating this phenomenon in organisms traditionally perceived as asocial, including reptiles. However, the paradigm is shifting, and social behavior is now more widely recognized in reptiles, including snakes. In this study I tested whether juvenile Northern Cottonmouths (Agkistrodon piscivorous) experience social buffering by measuring changes in heart rate in snakes following an acute stressor with and without the presence …
