Defining The Field Of Wellness Law, Barbara Zabawa Jan 2025

Defining The Field Of Wellness Law, Barbara Zabawa

Faculty Works

Some lawyers practice “wellness law” without knowing what it is and how it differs from more recognized fields of practice such as health law, public health law, and medical malpractice. This article defines the field of wellness law using in a prescriptive manner the organizational framework that identifies the common and distinctive patterns in wellness and the law that surrounds it. This examination entails reviewing statutes and cases that differentiate between conventional health care and products or services outside of it to identify the core problems that are common and unique to wellness law. Those core problems are twofold. First, …

No Detected Signal Of The 2022 Epizootic From Multiannual Diadema Antillarum Settlement Data In The Florida Keys, Jason Albrecht Jan 2025

No Detected Signal Of The 2022 Epizootic From Multiannual Diadema Antillarum Settlement Data In The Florida Keys, Jason Albrecht

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The sea urchin Diadema antillarum is a key coral reef grazer that remains functionally extinct on many Caribbean reefs following a mass mortality event in 1983–84. In 2022, another widespread mortality event, likely caused by a scuticociliate parasite, again decimated D. antillarum at reefs across the Caribbean. Understanding the population-level impacts of this recent epizootic will be important for coral reef conservation efforts. This study examines multi-year larval settlement data from the Florida Keys to determine if the 2022 mortality event reduced larval settlement. Larval settlement was assessed monthly at three long-term monitoring sites (Delta Shoal, Tennessee Reef, and Pickles …

Domestic Direct Agricultural Exports And Export Spillovers From Foreign Export Intermediary Firms: Evidence From Tanzania, John S. M. Shilinde, Ari Kokko, Vincent Leyaro Jan 2025

Domestic Direct Agricultural Exports And Export Spillovers From Foreign Export Intermediary Firms: Evidence From Tanzania, John S. M. Shilinde, Ari Kokko, Vincent Leyaro

Journal of African Trade

This study examines the impact of foreign intermediaries on Tanzanian domestic direct exporting firms’ ability to expand their export volume. Using panel gravity PPML model to firm-level agricultural exports dataset 2010-2020, we find that foreign intermediaries significantly promote domestic firms’ intensive margins of exports. The geographic clustering of foreign intermediaries exporting comparable goods to similar destination generates significant positive spillover effects on domestic firms based in the same region. This suggests, the companies with product-destination-market pairings have the greatest export spillover effects that are likely related to knowledge transfers generated foreign firms from their country of origin.

The Potential Impact Of The African Continental Free Trade Area On Ethiopia's Total Exports And Real Gdp Growth, Simachew Zelalem Mengistu Jan 2025

The Potential Impact Of The African Continental Free Trade Area On Ethiopia's Total Exports And Real Gdp Growth, Simachew Zelalem Mengistu

Journal of African Trade

This study examines the potential impact of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) on Ethiopia's export growth and real GDP using the General Equilibrium Poisson Pseudo Maximum Likelihood (GEPPML) estimation model. Despite Africa's longstanding efforts toward economic integration, intra-African trade remains low, with Ethiopia's export structure heavily reliant on primary agricultural commodities and limited diversification into high-value or technology-intensive sectors. The paper employs a three-stage GEPPML approach to simulate the effects of AfCFTA, accounting for trade elasticities, multilateral resistance terms, and endogenous income adjustments.

The findings indicate that AfCFTA could enhance Ethiopia's export growth by 1.137% and real GDP …

Approximating The First-Order Effects Of Afcfta Tariff Reductions On Co2 Emissions, Jaime De Melo, Jean-Marc Solleder Jan 2025

Approximating The First-Order Effects Of Afcfta Tariff Reductions On Co2 Emissions, Jaime De Melo, Jean-Marc Solleder

Journal of African Trade

This paper explores how AfCFTA tariff reductions affect CO₂ emissions. Using sector-level data, we find that more protected sectors are also more carbon intensive, so liberalization risks favoring “dirtier” activities. However, for EAC and ECOWAS, tariff cuts on liberalized goods reduce average carbon intensity. A full liberalization scenario suggests intra-African trade could rise by 32% while emissions grow by 24%, implying a modest decline in emission intensity. AfCFTA thus expands trade but requires complementary green policies.

When The Executive Has Unclean Hands, William Baude, Samuel L. Bray Jan 2025

When The Executive Has Unclean Hands, William Baude, Samuel L. Bray

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Those who come into equity must come with clean hands. But what happens when it is the executive who seeks equitable relief? This Essay argues that the unclean-hands doctrine applies to the executive, though in a modified form that reflects the relation- ships between officials in the executive branch, between the executive and legislative branch, and between the government and the people. It then applies the doctrine to current controversies such as government requests for stays from the Supreme Court, and a pending lawsuit against the District of Maryland.

Unlocking Human-Robot Dynamics In Restaurants: Exploring The Mechanisms Underlying The Impacts Of Service Robots’ Social Cues On Restaurant Customer Behaviors, Yusi Cheng Jan 2025

Unlocking Human-Robot Dynamics In Restaurants: Exploring The Mechanisms Underlying The Impacts Of Service Robots’ Social Cues On Restaurant Customer Behaviors, Yusi Cheng

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024

The rise of service robots (SRs) is reshaping service delivery, particularly in the dining sector where guiding and delivering robots are increasingly prevalent. However, understanding how customers interact with SRs and respond to their social cues in the dining environment remains unclear and fragmented. This dissertation aims to bridge this gap by comprehensively understanding the social cues of SRs and their influences on customer behaviors. Specifically, the objectives are to (1) understand prominent social cues and customer responses; (2) identify key SR-related social cues; (3) explore customer-SR interaction outcomes; (4) explain why certain social cues elicit particular customer responses; (5) …

Fgf19 Facilitates Metastatic Phenotypes In Colorectal Cancer, Joseph W. Nolff Jan 2025

Fgf19 Facilitates Metastatic Phenotypes In Colorectal Cancer, Joseph W. Nolff

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. With 154,000 new cases estimated in 2025, there is an increased need for early screening to detect CRC prior to metastasis. Our laboratory has focused on enteroendocrine hormone Fibroblast Growth Factor-19 (FGF19) as it is overexpressed in a subset of CRC tumors. FGF19 is an intestinal-derived hormone involved with lipid homeostasis when bound to its receptor, Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptor-4 (FGFR4). Our objective focuses on FGF19 contribution towards an epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and overall metastatic properties including rapid proliferation and/or increased cell motility. Immunofluorescence was …

Fructose Induces Metabolic Changes Distinctly Different From Glucose In A N2a Cell Line., Catherine A. Ghigleri

All Master's Theses

Over the last 50 years, there has been a rise in diagnoses of Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias associated with metabolic stress. This parallels an increase in fructose consumption and has led to research on the effects of fructose on the hippocampus, a brain structure responsible for learning and long-term memory formation. The hippocampus is also a region of the brain that metabolizes fructose. Experiments using animals fed diets containing fructose have shown a correlation between fructose consumption, learning impairment, and structural changes to the hippocampus in animals’ brains. However, the effects of fructose on hippocampal neurons have not been …

A Fear Of Ideas? Social Media, Foreign Influence, And National Security In A New Era Of Great-Power Competition, Michael Park Jan 2025

A Fear Of Ideas? Social Media, Foreign Influence, And National Security In A New Era Of Great-Power Competition, Michael Park

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

The recent spate of legal restrictions on the use of TikTok and other foreign-controlled social media applications highlight concerns over personal data collection, but also how fears over the potential foreign influence of ideas from adversarial foreign governments—whether by propaganda, censorship, or disinformation—have re-emerged in the national security debate. Yet there are concerns that this new era of great power competition will be the basis for justifying overreaching speech regulations that hinder access to information and ideas under the aegis of national security. This work attempts to examine the recent enactment of speech restrictions or bans on foreign-controlled applications within …

Optimization And Efficacy Of Car T Cells Derived From Newly Generated Anti-Cd22 Monoclonal Antibody For Blood Cancer Treatment, Wipawadee Ruengdej

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy has revolutionized the treatment of B-cell malignancies. Nevertheless, relapse due to loss of CD19 expression remains a major clinical challenge. CD22 serves as an alternative target because of its consistent expression on malignant B cells, even in CD19-negative disease. Optimization of CD22-directed CAR design is therefore critical to enhance antitumor potency and persistence. Two novel anti-CD22 CAR constructs were generated from monoclonal antibody clones 24A7G6 and 29H9C8, each incorporating either a 4-1BB or CD28 costimulatory domain. The resulting CAR T cells were evaluated for proliferation, phenotype, and cytotoxicity against CD22-positive (Raji, Nalm-6) and CD22-negative …

Development Of Potentiometric Aptasensor For The Detection Of Escherichia Coli, Chalinee Auanphui

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

A potentiometric aptasensor was developed for the rapid and label-free detection of Escherichia coli (E. coli), a major food- and water-borne pathogen of public health concern. The sensor utilized a laser-induced graphene (LIG) electrode fabricated by laser engraving on a polyimide substrate, followed by modification with an ion marker, coating with a carboxylated poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC–COOH) membrane, and immobilization of an E. coli-specific aptamer. The remaining surface was blocked with bovine serum albumin (BSA) to minimize nonspecific adsorption. Detection was based on changes in ion exchange between the ion marker and membrane upon the specific binding of E. coli to …

Gel Based Sensing Platforms For Ammonia Detection, Patita Salee Jan 2025

Gel Based Sensing Platforms For Ammonia Detection, Patita Salee

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This research focuses on the development of two biopolymer-based colorimetric platforms for ammonia detection in environmental water and gaseous samples. To detect ammonia in water samples, an agarose hydrogel membrane containing salicylate, hypochlorite, and sodium nitroprusside was incorporated into a flow analysis system to perform the Berthelot reaction within the gel. Ammonium in the sample was converted to monochloramine in an alkaline reagent stream, and its subsequent interaction with the sensing membrane yielded an indosalicylate blue chromophore, causing the gel to change from pale yellow to green–blue as the ammonia concentration increased. Under the optimal operating conditions, the method provided …

The Effects Of Reciprocal Teaching On Improving Reading Comprehension In Secondary Students With Learning Disabilities, Christopher Gilmartin Jan 2025

The Effects Of Reciprocal Teaching On Improving Reading Comprehension In Secondary Students With Learning Disabilities, Christopher Gilmartin

Education Masters Theses

I was introduced to a reading strategy called reciprocal teaching. Placing an emphasis on group work, reciprocal teaching allows students to investigate the text and deepen understanding of it. Since I am an actor and I thoroughly analyze text daily, I wanted to thread the concepts together and to impart my knowledge. This made me wonder what would happen if reciprocal teaching was implemented in a secondary special education classroom in the hopes of improving reading comprehension. The research question I sought to answer became: Does the strategy of reciprocal teaching help improve the reading comprehension skills of high school …

A Woman’S World Through The Lens Of Socialized Politics: How Accurate Knowledge Politically And Socially Empowers A Woman’S Autonomy, Claire G. Herzog

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Women have dealt with being perceived as inferior to men, defective, and in need of control. My research draws a connection between the ways societal beliefs, judicial action and political action interact with each other to reinforce and reproduce these limiting beliefs about women. The interaction between these institutions result in underlying policies that target women's rights, silencing their voices and sense of independence, all while aiming to control the female body completely. Despite the perception that modern society has moved away from the sexist beliefs that had been created and ingrained into society centuries ago, we are left with …

Promoting Participation And Self-Efficacy Among Youth With Disabilities In Community-Based Vocational Education, Allison Hollender Jan 2025

Promoting Participation And Self-Efficacy Among Youth With Disabilities In Community-Based Vocational Education, Allison Hollender

Doctoral Projects

Occupational therapy, with its focus on participation, contextual adaptation, and strength-based practice, is uniquely suited to support the growth and inclusion of youth in transition (Angell et al., 2018; Cahill et al., 2020; Carroll et al., 2025). Research indicates that transitional-aged youth (TAY) with disabilities, ages 14-24, are less likely to graduate from high school, pursue postsecondary education, or live independently (BLS, 2024; Cheng & Shaewitz, 2022; Cook et al., 2015). These disparities are compounded by occupational deprivation, or limited opportunities for meaningful participation, which can negatively impact long-term self-efficacy and belonging (Arbesman & Logsdon, 2011; Cahill et al., 2020). …

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology

Acute radiation syndrome (ARS) occurs when hematopoietic or gastrointestinal cells are damaged by radiation exposure causing DNA damage to the bone marrow and gastrointestinal epithelial stem cell populations. In these highly proliferative cell types, DNA damage inhibits stem cell repopulation. In humans and animals, this inability to regenerate stem cells is lethal. Within this manuscript, several compounds, Amifostine, Captopril, Ciprofloxacin, PrC-210, 5-AED (5-androstene-3β,17β-diol), and 5-AET (5-androstene-3β,7β,17B-triol), are assessed for their ability to protect against ARS in an in vitro and/or in vivo setting. ARS was accomplished by irradiating mouse bone marrow cells or rat intestinal epithelial (IEC-6) cells in vitro …
