Does Chronic Stress Play A Role In The Genesis Of Neurodegenerative Diseases?, Rachelle Halpert

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Chronic stress has been increasingly recognized as a major contributor to the onset and progression of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. This paper explores the correlation between chronic stress and neurodegeneration by reviewing population, clinical, and animal studies. Studies show that long-term stress disrupts the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, impairs hippocampal function, increases oxidative stress, and promotes neuroinflammation. These processes are all implicated in cognitive decline. The mechanisms through which these processes occur are discussed including elevated glucocorticoid levels, shortened telomeres, mitochondrial dysfunction, and the activity of pro-inflammatory microglia. Lastly, potential interventions are reviewed, including lifestyle modifications such …

Does Prenatal Stress Have Prenatal And Life-Long Effects?, Miriam Lavizadeh

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Maternal prenatal stress (MPS) has a unique impact on the developing fetus and the child’s life post birth. Pregnancy is a highly anxious time for a lot of women. Many have pregnancy related concerns as well as overall stress from environmental and societal factors. However, this takes a toll on the fetus’s development which can later cause different cognitive and health outcomes in the child. During a time of stress, one’s HPA axis gets activated causing the release of various hormones, particularly cortisol and catecholamines. These hormones can cross the placental barrier called HSD11B2-11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 2, exposing the sensitive and …

The Moderating Role Of Investor Sentiment Regimes On The Impact Of Flow Types On Capital Structure Decisions (Evidence From Thailand), Shiva Sachaphimukh

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This study analyzes how foreign and domestic capital flows influence the leverage of SET100 Thai non-financial firms, considering investor sentiment regimes and firm cyclicality (2013–2023). It contrasts fundamental foreign portfolio flows with speculative domestic trading turnover. Sentiment regimes powerfully amplify flow effects. Bullish domestic sentiment and high domestic turnover significantly increase leverage (sentiment-exploitation). Conversely, deteriorating sentiment and foreign outflows intensify debt reliance (stress-compensation). Domestic flows have stronger, more immediate leverage effects than foreign flows, revealing a behavioral asymmetry. Cyclical firms respond aggressively to domestic factors and sentiment, while non-cyclical firms prioritize foreign capital stability. The findings highlight the critical role of …

Functional Characterization Of Vago In Black Tiger Shrimp Penaeus Monodon Ikk-Nf-Κb Signaling Pathway Against Viral Infection, Zittipong Nanakorn

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Cytokines serve as key regulators in innate antiviral defense. In crustaceans, research on cytokine-mediated immunity remains limited. A previous study in Penaeus monodon has demonstrated that PmVago proteins exhibit cytokine-like function by acting through the inhibitor of kappa B kinase-nuclear factor κB (IKK-NF-κB) cascade to defend against white spot syndrome virus (WSSV). In this study, five PmVago isoforms were identified, each showing differential transcriptional responses to pathogen challenges. Among them, PmVago1 and PmVago4 exhibited strong antiviral responses against WSSV infection. RNA interference of PmVago1 and PmVago4 increased shrimp susceptibility to WSSV infection with enhanced viral replication. Their suppression also disrupted …
