Legal Development Of Coastal Marine Management Based On The Idea Of Pancasila, Jantje Tjiptabudy Jan 2025

Legal Development Of Coastal Marine Management Based On The Idea Of Pancasila, Jantje Tjiptabudy

Hasanuddin Law Review

In relation to the positive law, the management of marine and coastal natural resources, there is also the rule of customary law. Customary law that still lives and develops in indigenous peoples also regulates the management system and utilization of natural resources in coastal and marine areas. Recognition of the rights of indigenous peoples is constitutionally contained in the 1945 Constitution of the State of the Republic of Indonesia where the state recognizes the existence of the Customary Law Community. In Maluku, marine potency management in general is still done traditionally known as marine customary rights that have been going …

New Paradigm In Natural Resources Management: Securing Indigenous Peoples Rights, Farida Patittingi Jan 2025

New Paradigm In Natural Resources Management: Securing Indigenous Peoples Rights, Farida Patittingi

Hasanuddin Law Review

The multi-decade struggle of indigenous communities in Indonesia to gain recognition of their collective rights and the reluctance of the state to act on their demands, now has come to a bright spot. The rights of indigenous peoples in natural resources management –in land and forests– get more recognition as well as protection since the Constitutional Court’s decision on forest law. The recognition of indigenous peoples and their traditional rights must be followed by exclusive rights to control and managing resources in their environment, such as land or forests, as the main source of livelihood for indigenous peoples (lebensraum). Hence, …

Animal Welfare And Covid-19 In Indonesia: A Neglected Legal Issue, Myrna Asnawati Safitri, Firman Firman

Hasanuddin Law Review

The Covid-19 pandemic currently infecting the world population comes from the Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) transmitted initially from animals to humans, then between humans. This disease is referred to as zoonosis. Covid-19 discourse is generally about zoonotic transmission from animals to humans. Not much attention has been given to the potential transmission from humans to animals. In several countries, cases indicating the exposures of animals with the Coronavirus have been found. Thus, a discussion on the vulnerability of exposure to animals with the Coronavirus is significant to scientifically discussed. Unfortunately, concerns about this problem are still voiced by the mass media. Limited …

Barriers To The Enforcement Of Environmental Law: An Effect Of Free Market Domination And Regional Autonomy In Indonesia, Jean Claude Geofrey Mahoro, F.X. Adji Samekto

Hasanuddin Law Review

This paper discusses different issues relating to the enforcement of environmental law in Indonesia in the long way of the Indonesian government to sustainable development. To reach reliable conclusion, socio-legal approach was employed in this paper. Throughout the work the researcher analyses environmental philosophies including anthropocentrism, biocentrism and ecocentrism. This phenomenon does not only pose responsibility to the government but also to private individuals or companies in their operations in order not to leave burdens to the shoulders of future generations. This ideology was not well ensured in the free-market economy and regional autonomy as the proliferated regulations were not …

In The Question Of Geospatial Information Data Use In The Forestry Legislation Making In Indonesia, Suparto Wijoyo, Wilda Prihatiningtyas, Indria Wahyuni, Dita Elvia Kusuma Putri, Ardhana Christian Noventry

Hasanuddin Law Review

The high rate of deforestation and many forest disputes in Indonesia show that forest management in Indonesia is not based on the principles of good forest governance. It also shows that there is still a lack of attention to the aspect of sustainable forest development which focuses on a balanced sustainability condition between the three forest functions (production, ecology, and socio-economic functions). Geospatial Information is expected to be the solution to help provide an accurate data and information which mapping forest development in accordance with the conditions of each forest area, so that the three functions can operate coherently. Furthermore, …

Carbon-rich Wolf-Rayet (WR) binaries are a prominent source of carbonaceous dust that contribute to the dust budget of galaxies. The “textbook” example of an episodic dust-producing WR binary, WR 140 (HD 193793), provides us with an ideal laboratory for investigating the dust physics and kinematics in an extreme environment. This study is among the first to utilize two separate JWST observations, from Cycle 1 ERS (2022 July) and Cycle 2 (2023 September), to measure WR 140’s dust kinematics and confirm its morphology. To measure the proper motions and projected velocities of the dust shells, we performed a novel point-spread function …

Purpose: Corneal dysmorphologies (CDs) are typically classified as either regressive degenerative corneal dystrophies (CDtrs) or defective growth and differentiation-driven corneal dysplasias (CDyps). Both eye disorders have multifactorial etiologies. While previous work has elucidated many aspects of CDs, such as presenting symptoms, epidemiology, and pathophysiology, the genetic mechanisms remain incompletely understood. The purpose of this study was to analyze phenotype data from 8,707 knockout mouse lines to identify new genes associated with the development of CDs in humans.

Methods: 8,707 knockout mouse lines phenotyped by the International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium were queried for genes associated with statistically significant (P < 0.0001) abnormal cornea morphology to identify candidate CD genes. Corneal abnormalities were investigated by histopathology. A literature search was used to determine the proportion of candidate genes previously associated with CDs in mice and humans. Phenotypes of human orthologues of mouse candidate genes were compared with known human CD genes to identify protein-protein interactions and molecular pathways using the Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes/Proteins (STRING), Protein Analysis Through Evolutionary Relationships (PANTHER), and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes.

Faunistic Study Of Some Fouling Species Associated With Pearl Oysters, Including A New Record For The Egyptian Mediterranean Sea, Khaled M. Abdelsalam, Noha H. Elebiary

Blue Economy

The objective of this study is to redescribe four marine fouling species on Al Dhahab Island in front of Miyami Beach, Alexandria, that are associated with the pearl oyster Pinctada radiata (Leach, 1814). During June 2021, eighteen shells of P. radiata oysters were collected by scuba diving. Analyzed fouling communities revealed that a total of 106 taxa were associated with the studied shells, among these two polychaetes (Lepidonotus carinulatus and Eurysyllis tuberculata), one bivalve (Septifer cumingii), and one isopod (Munna sp.) were recorded. The fourth species, identified as Uromunna petiti (Amar, 1948), constitutes a new record for the Egyptian Mediterranean …

A Battle Among Sovereigns: Partnering Federal Exhaustion And Infringement Principles To Safeguard Tribal Court Jurisdiction Over Labor And Employment Disputes, Cody T. Preston

Arkansas Law Review

Since the shift in federal policy starting in the late 1960s towards Indian self-determination and self-government, Indian tribes have leveraged federal support to enter into a broad variety of commercial activities to fund their governments and community programs. Despite some of the earliest iterations of the policy of self-determination being a call to “break decisively with the past and to create the conditions for a new era in which the Indian future is determined by Indian acts and Indian decisions” and to uphold promises to provide tribes with “a standard of living comparable to that of other Americans,” tribes have …

Infiltrating The Black Box: Expanding The No-Impeachment Rule To Protect Defendants From Pervasive Juror Bias, Jordan Whitfield Jan 2025

Infiltrating The Black Box: Expanding The No-Impeachment Rule To Protect Defendants From Pervasive Juror Bias, Jordan Whitfield

Arkansas Law Review

In the United States, a criminal defendant is entitled to “a fair trial but not a perfect one, for there are no perfect trials.” However, defendants are also guaranteed the right to an impartial jury. While perfection within a jury is “an untenable goal,” a system that allows for juror bias during deliberations to go undetected threatens a defendant’s most crucial constitutional rights. Thus, when juror bias threatens to interfere with a defendant’s rights to a fair trial and impartial jury, there is a prevalent need for the judicial system to step in and mitigate the effects of juror bias. …

Monstrosity And Ecophobia In Frankenstein, Moby Dick, And Dracula, Enas Hassouneh, Raja Al-Khalili

Jordan Journal of Applied Science-Humanities Series

Since ancient times, images of monsters have appeared in many works and served as embodiments of human fears and sources of ecophobia. Monstrosity evoked contempt, hatred, and ultimately ecophobia, which Estok describes as irrational fear, contempt, or lack of mindfulness toward the natural environment. This paper explores the character of the monster as an embodiment of ecophobia in three Gothic novels: Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818), Herman Melville’s Moby Dick (1851), and Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897), by interpreting monstrosity in socio-cultural contexts. The following questions will be addressed: How is monstrosity represented? How do monsters exhibit ecophobia? What role does the …

Taking Back Control: Using The Takings Clause To Hold Animal Agriculture Responsible For Its Waste Problem, Rowan Aragon Jan 2025

Taking Back Control: Using The Takings Clause To Hold Animal Agriculture Responsible For Its Waste Problem, Rowan Aragon

Northwestern University Law Review

Between the mid-twentieth century and modern day, the animal-agriculture model has shifted from small farms to industrial operations. During that evolution, the negative externalities of animal-farming practices have intensified. One of those externalities—animal waste—has become particularly problematic. Because of the sheer number of animals raised in the United States for slaughter and dairy production, the magnitude of animal waste produced is overwhelming. To deal with this problem, animal farmers often liquefy the animal waste and then spray it onto open fields. In that spraying process, liquefied animal waste carries through the air and reaches nearby homes, coating those properties with …

Do Ais Dream Of Electric Boards?, Robert J. Rhee

Northwestern University Law Review

When artificial intelligence (AI) acquires self-awareness, agency, and unique intelligence, it will attain ontological personhood. Management of firms by AI would be technologically and economically feasible. The law could confer upon AI the status of legal personhood, as it did upon traditional business firms in the past, thus dispensing with the need for inserting AI as property within the legal boundary of a firm. As a separate and distinct entity, AI could function independently as a manager in the way that legal or natural persons do today: i.e., AI as director, officer, partner, member, or manager. Such a future is …

Classifying Items With The Rating Values 3 Using Text Reviews To Improve The Recommendation Accuracy In The Collaborative Filtering Approach, Ali Mohsin Ahmed Al-Sabaawi, Mohsin Hasan Hussein, Muyassar Dalli

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

Collaborative filtering is a common aspect recently used in e-commerce to increase sales and overcome information overload. One significant limitation in collaborative filtering is data sparseness. Several studies have proposed alleviating this issue by utilizing extra information such as users’ reviews. However, the researchers have been concerned with using entire reviews irrespective of the users’ ratings. This requires extra processing time and might perplex the recommendation decision. In this study, after analyzing the users’ ratings and reviews, it was noted that when the rating values are 4 or 5, most of the reviews accompanying these ratings are positive. Otherwise, when …

Nuclear receptor binding set domain protein 2 (NSD2) plays a key role in chromatin regulation and is associated with different cancers and other developmental problems. Berries are rich in major secondary metabolites with anticancer properties. Here, we virtually screened 145 berry phytochemicals as putative NSD2 inhibitors via structure-based virtual screening, molecular docking, MD simulations, and DFT and ADMET analyses. Among them, α-carotene had the maximum docking score of -9.9 kcal/mol, followed by sulfuretin and β-amyrin. MD simulation analysis revealed that the dynamic behavior of the ligand‒NSD2 complexes was within the limit, indicating no significant changes in the structural integrity of …

The Effects Of Improper Waste Disposal On Marine Life: Why Does It Matter And How Can We Prevent It?, Abbey Ward, Ashlee Davis

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Improperly disposed of waste, specifically plastic, can end up in the ocean and negatively impact marine life, and in turn, negatively impact human health. Marine life, such as turtles, have faced serious health consequences and even death from entanglement in abandoned fishing gear and consuming plastics. Larger plastic particles can break down into smaller particles known as microplastics which can harbor harmful substances (such as Bisphenol A and persistent organic pollutants) and can cause several negative health effects when consumed by marine life such as loss of nutrition, starvation, and death. Microplastics have been found in 75% of commercial fish. …

The ‘Extending Realities’ Special Issue originated out of the desire to open discussion between industry and academia around the status of extended reality (XR) in Australia today. Our intention is to generate a dialogue that is community-focused, speculative and reflective, engages a range of communities, and is both forward-moving and backwards-turning. Because of this, we explore critical language and perspectives that are emerging around XR so that we might mark a provisional location point, or at least a record of where some of us think we are–both within the XR community of makers, and within academic communities of scholars and …

Differences In Risk Appraisal And Neural Activity In Adolescents With A History Of Misconduct, Elizabeth S Escalante, Jessica S Flannery, Michael T Perino, Eva H Telzer

2020-Current year OA Pubs

While much of the prior work examining the behavioural and neural mechanisms of adolescent risk taking has focused on community samples, less is known about whether these mechanisms apply to adolescents engaging in high levels of risky behaviour. The current study examines behavioural and neural differences between adolescents with (N = 24) and without (N = 35) a history of misconduct using a risk perception questionnaire and risk-taking fMRI task. Adolescents with a history of misconduct perceived fewer negative consequences of risk relative to positive consequences and exhibited altered neural tracking of risk and reward in the nucleus accumbens. Specifically, …

We developed ligandomics for the in vivo profiling of vascular ligands in mice, discovering secretogranin III (Scg3) as a novel angiogenic factor that selectively binds to retinal vessels of diabetic but not healthy mice. This discovery led to the development of anti-Scg3 therapy for ocular vasculopathies. However, in vivo ligandomics requires intracardial perfusion to remove unbound phage clones, limiting its use to vascular endothelial cells (ECs). To extend ligandomics to non-vascular cells, we investigated ex vivo ligandomics. We isolated ECs and retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) from diabetic and healthy mouse retinas by immunopanning. We quantified the binding of clonal phages …

Retracted: Conserved Domains In Promoters Of Differentially Expressed Genes: How To Find Them And What Can They Tell Us?, Emalynn E. Tobias

Mako: NSU Undergraduate Student Journal

THIS ARTICLE HAS BEEN RETRACTED DUE TO THE FOLLOWING REASON: inadvertent errors in several citations.

The complex process of regulating gene expression involves a large number of cis- and trans-acting components. The cis elements also referred to as cis regulatory elements (CREs) are highly conserved across species, and are often referred to as conserved domains mainly located in the promoters of genes. The trans acting sequences such as enhancers, moderators and insulators are also crucial in the regulation of gene expression. With an increased influx of genomic and transcriptomic data, study of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) is highly effective in …

Separate But Free, Joshua E. Weishart Jan 2025

Separate But Free, Joshua E. Weishart

Florida Law Review

“Separate but equal” legally sanctioned segregation in public schools until Brown. Ever since, separate but free has been the prevailing dogma excusing segregation. From “freedom of choice” plans that facilitated massive resistance to desegregation to current school choice plans exacerbating racial, socioeconomic, and disability segregation, proponents have venerated parental freedom as the overriding principle. This Article contends that, in the field of public education, the dogma of separate but free has no place; separate is inherently unfree. As this Article uniquely clarifies, segregation deprives schoolchildren of freedom to become equal citizens and freedom to learn in democratic, integrated, …

Discerning The Role Of Microtubule Acetylation During Hiv-1 Infection, Drew Michael Lichon

Dissertations

The host-pathogen interactions underlying Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection are complex and involve the exploitation of host cellular machinery. This thesis investigates the roles of dynein adaptors, microtubule acetylation, and TRIM69-mediated restriction in HIV-1 infection. Through a series of detailed experiments, we explore how HIV-1 utilizes multiple dynein adaptors, such as BICDR1 and Hook3, for intracellular transport, and reveal that these adaptors are critical for efficient viral trafficking. Conversely, the knockdown of Ninein surprisingly enhances HIV-1 infectivity, suggesting a nuanced regulatory role for this adaptor in viral transport. Further, this thesis challenges the prevailing paradigm that microtubule acetylation …
