Functional Dissection Of The Periplasmic Domain Of Rcsd, The Phosphotransfer Protein Of Escherichia Coli Rcs System, Abdelraouf Dapour

Theses and Dissertations

Microbial resistance to antibiotics poses a major health threat worldwide, prompting the scientific community to dedicate considerable efforts toward understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying this resistance. The Gram-negative cell envelope serves as a formidable barrier to environmental stressors and numerous antimicrobials. In E. coli and other enterobacteria, the Rcs system (Regulator of capsule synthesis) is a crucial two-component signalling pathway that plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity of the bacterial envelope. One unique aspect of the Rcs system is the involvement of several auxiliary proteins in its signalling cascade. Among them, RcsD, an inner membrane 100 kDa protein, …

The Principles Of Islamic Moral Philosophy And The Possibility Of Re-Conceptualizing Classical Islamic Aesthetics Of Architecture, Muhammad Feteha

Theses and Dissertations

This study is primarily concerned with the intersection of the moral and aesthetic theories of Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī (d. 1111). Al-Ghazālī’s theory of aesthetics has been the subject of thorough scholarly investigations and diverse interpretations in the field of Islamic art history since the 1940s. This thesis critiques the premises upon which the use of al-Ghazālī’s writings in studies of Islamic art and architecture were built. It suggests that they lead to what could be described as “the contradiction of unethical beauty.” To overcome this contradiction, it offers a comprehensive interpretation of al-Ghazālī’s aesthetics through analyzing the concept ḥusn in …

Knocking On Gelenbevī’S Door: A First Exploration Of The Epistemological Overcoming Of The Aristotelian Conception Of Metaphysical Modalities In The Thought Of IsmāʿĪl Gelenbevī (D. 1790/1 C.E.), Hisham Fahmy Al-Farrash Jan 2025

Knocking On Gelenbevī’S Door: A First Exploration Of The Epistemological Overcoming Of The Aristotelian Conception Of Metaphysical Modalities In The Thought Of IsmāʿĪl Gelenbevī (D. 1790/1 C.E.), Hisham Fahmy Al-Farrash

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a first exploration of the epistemological turn in metaphysical modalities within Arabic philosophy, particularly within its post-classical period (circa 1100 – 1900 C.E.), which is the turn that highlights the Arabic post-classical philosopher’s attempt(s) to overcome the Aristotelian conception of metaphysical modalities. I here focus on some linguistic, philosophical, and theological nuances of this turn, by synoptically comparing the conceptions of metaphysical modalities of Ismāʿīl Gelenbevī (d. 1790/91) and Aristotle (d. circa 322 B.C.) as two points of culmination in their respective tradition’s reflections on modalities, which is the comparison that presents Gelenbevī’s said conception for …

Under The Bay: Analysis Of Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia Mydas) Dive Behavior In The Urban San Diego Bay, Emily Carter

Theses

Sea turtles are air-breathing marine reptiles that spend their lives performing dives to travel, forage, and rest. Several dive types have been previously recorded for sea turtles, each type being associated with a different set of behaviors. U-dives, or Type 1 dives are widely characterized by extensive benthic periods preceded by and concluding with abrupt descent and ascent phases respectively (Minamikawa et al. 1997; Houghton et al. 2002; Seminoff et al. 2006). These dives are widely affiliated with turtle resting behavior though can be indicative of additional activities including benthic travel and foraging. Previous research of green turtle dive behavior …

Determining The Physiological And Behavioral Tolerance To Hypoxia In Two Species Of Rockfish (Sebastes Spp.), Makenna Chan

Theses

In the eastern North Pacific, the oxygen minimum zone naturally shoals seasonally and impacts demersal fish habitat along the continental margins and on offshore seamounts. This hypoxic layer has been shoaling in recent decades, likely affecting the habitat and distribution of commercially-important fish species such as rockfishes (genus Sebastes). Respirometry and shuttle box behavioral experiments were used to determine the hypoxia sensitivities of two rockfish species with contrasting movement patterns and habitat use: cowcod (Sebastes levis) and bocaccio (Sebastes paucispinis). Although both species inhabit similar deep-water, rocky-reef habitat, they have different lifestyles, in which cowcod …

Obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) increase cardiovascular risk, largely due to altered metabolic state. An early consequence of T2D/obesity is the loss of endothelial function and impaired nitric oxide (NO) signaling. In blood vessels, endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) synthesizes NO to maintain vessel homeostasis. The biological actions of NO are compromised by superoxide that is generated by NADPH oxidases (NOXs). Herein we investigated how altered metabolism affects superoxide/NO balance in obesity. We found that eNOS expression and NO bioavailability are significantly decreased in endothelial cells (ECs) from T2D patients and animal models of obesity. In parallel, PFKFB3, a …

Ameliorating Bankruptcy's Forum Shopping Crisis Through Abstention And Venue Transfer, Sarah Jones Jan 2025

Ameliorating Bankruptcy's Forum Shopping Crisis Through Abstention And Venue Transfer, Sarah Jones

Florida Law Review

In the wake of highly publicized and contentious corporate bankruptcies, scholars and policymakers are reevaluating the Bankruptcy Code’s flexible venue statute amid a forum shopping crisis. The current statute allows a corporate debtor to file bankruptcy in any state where it has an affiliate. Big corporations, anxious to choose favorable judges, create affiliates on the eve of bankruptcy to manufacture venue in a given court. Oftentimes, local court rules guarantee that a particular judge will preside. This strategic maneuvering has significant consequences for pending tort claims and other junior claimants who must appear in whatever venue the debtor selects. Some …

The Decline Of Coordinated Effects Enforcement And How To Reverse It, D. Daniel Sokol, Sean P. Sullivan

Florida Law Review

Opposition to anticompetitive coordination once animated merger policy. But evidence now suggests that coordinated effects challenges are disfavored and rarely pursued. This stark change in enforcement is both puzzling and troubling. Coordinated effects challenges are antitrust law’s best and often only opportunity to combat anticompetitive coordination in concentrated markets. Why are coordinated effects theories not being vigorously pursued? This Article exposes the decline in coordinated effects enforcement and the threat it poses to the maintenance of competitive markets. It does so in three steps. First, it surfaces the special role that coordinated effects enforcement plays in the antitrust framework. Second, …

The Zooarchaeological Assemblage From The French School On Yefet Street, Yafo (Jaffa) (Pp. 513–527), Nimrod Marom

'Atiqot

A small assemblage of 158 identified animal bones was retrieved from Crusader- and late Ottoman-period contexts at the French School. The bone samples from both periods consisted mainly of cattle and caprines, as well as some pig, donkey, horse and chicken bones. The relative frequency of pig bones in the Ottoman period might point to a religious tolerance toward the consumption of equid and wild boar. This may attest to a poverty-stricken Muslim population, or to the presence of immigrants from the Maghrebi Islam.
