Cultivating Consumption Of Biobased Product, Nima Nejadrezaei
Doctoral
Consumers play a critical role in transitioning towards bioeconomy. However, their positive attitudes and interest in biobased products often do not lead to actual usage because of the complexity of the decision-making process. Despite the bioeconomy’s importance, research on consumer behaviour regarding biobased products remains limited. This study bridged gaps by examining consumer perspectives on biobased products. It sought to identify factors influencing consumer perspectives and develop an integrative model where acceptance preceded actual use. Focusing on consumers from the Republic of Ireland, a test market with strong government commitment to the bioeconomy, private sector and research centre investments and …
A Reconstruction Of Gender: Implications Of Social Construct And Gender Structure Theories, Bethany Rozario Steinhagen
A Reconstruction Of Gender: Implications Of Social Construct And Gender Structure Theories, Bethany Rozario Steinhagen
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
The relationship between gender and social construction has long been discussed in feminist and gender studies scholarship. However, the current discussion on gender has run up against a blockage of misapplication of social construct theory. To untangle this blockage, my analysis applies the philosophy of social construction as explained by Ian Hacking in his 1999 book The Social Construction of What? and the framework of gender as a social structure as put forth by feminist sociologist Barbara Risman since the early 2000s. I apply these frameworks to elucidate better the logical implications that follow from a social construct thesis about …
Blast Tube Design: How Shape And Size Influence The Resultant Shock Wave, R. L. Bauer, C. E. Johnson
Blast Tube Design: How Shape And Size Influence The Resultant Shock Wave, R. L. Bauer, C. E. Johnson
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Shock tubes and tunnels are often used in research settings as a way of producing high pressure shock waves in a smaller footprint or without the use of explosives. However, there is no standard geometric design across laboratories. Peak pressure is a significant parameter for characterizing a shock wave. However, different tube configurations could also affect parameters such as impulse and duration, yet no research has investigated how the scale of the tube affects the overall waveform shape. To understand the implications of shock tube design, tubes with a constant length to diameter ratio were evaluated to determine how tube …
Watershed Land Use Decreases The Nitrogen Limitation Of Benthic Algal Growth In Coastal Wetlands Of A Large Oligotrophic Lake, Matthew J. Cooper, Michele C. Wheeler
Watershed Land Use Decreases The Nitrogen Limitation Of Benthic Algal Growth In Coastal Wetlands Of A Large Oligotrophic Lake, Matthew J. Cooper, Michele C. Wheeler
Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles
Introduction:
Identifying patterns in the primary limiting nutrients of basal trophic levels such as benthic algae can inform the prediction of potential ecological responses to anthropogenic nutrient loading. In coastal wetlands of the Laurentian Great Lakes, reduced concentrations of reactive nitrogen species such as ammonium and nitrate may limit algal growth, especially when nutrient loading is minimal. However, the response of benthic algae to macronutrient inputs remains understudied, especially in Lake Superior coastal wetlands.
Methods:
We conducted nutrient amendment assays using nutrient diffusing substrate devices in 25 coastal wetlands along the southwestern shore of Lake Superior in the spring, summer, …
Extended Reality For Alternative Dispute Resolution, Ryan Gallagher
Extended Reality For Alternative Dispute Resolution, Ryan Gallagher
Journal of Dispute Resolution
“What is real? How do you define ‘real’? If you’re talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, what you can taste and see, then ‘real’ is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain.” As technology continues to advance, its effects will be felt in all aspects of our lives, and the world of Alternative Dispute Resolution (“ADR”) will be no different. Dispute resolution processes must adapt to the needs of their users. These users are increasingly in different parts of the world as the global economy expands. Inevitably, globalization leads to more conflicts that require resolution. Technology …

Science Across The Elementary Curriculum, Cora E. Fields
Undergraduate Theses
Science has increasingly become marginalized in the United States today. This is largely due to educational reforms and movements placing an emphasis on standardized testing and mastery of math and reading exclusively. This focus stems from initiatives such as the Back-to-the-Basics movement (1980s), the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) (2001), and the development of the Common Core standards (2010), which prioritize data collection and test results over the hands-on experiences and inquiry-based learning that good science education gives. Because of this, many of our students are not receiving consistent, meaningful access to science instruction. This limits their engagement with …
The Enlightenment In Early America, Annette Gordon-Reed
The Enlightenment In Early America, Annette Gordon-Reed
William & Mary Law Review
The founding of the United States of America is often said to have been the product of Enlightenment ideals that emphasized reason, individual liberty, and notions of progress. During this same era, however, racially based slavery, which confounded reason, denied individual liberty to millions, and challenged ideas about progress, existed in all of the colonies of North America.
The third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, embodied this seeming contradiction at the heart of the American founding. The principal author of the American Declaration of Independence enslaved hundreds of people over the course of his long life.

The Rise of China and the Concept of Civilization: Constructing a Conceptual Apparatus for Cross-Civilizational Comparisons
The paper examines the deficiencies of the current understanding of “civilization” in the social science literature, among others exemplified by “civilizational analysis,” and proposes a new concept that adds to the conceptual apparatus of sociological theory — a new, fully independent of others, variant of the cultural process. This independence makes distinctions between civilizations as the root cause of socio-cultural diversity.
Combined with the idea of humanity as a culturally constituted reality sui generis, this concept allows the construction of the theoretical scaffolding …
The Germanic Legends Of The Gold Of The Rhine And Their Āryan Sources, Alexander Jacob
The Germanic Legends Of The Gold Of The Rhine And Their Āryan Sources, Alexander Jacob
Comparative Civilizations Review
Medieval German legends regarding the gold of the Rhine have both a mythological source, as the gold of the Nibelung dwarf Andvari, and a historical Burgundian one, as a hoard possessed by the Burgundian princes. Here we point to more ancient sources of these legends, ones that are to be found in the cosmological myths and rituals of the Āryans.

Personalized antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) have achieved positive results in the treatment of rare genetic disease. As clinical sequencing technologies continue to advance, the ability to identify patients with rare disease harbouring pathogenic genetic variants amenable to this therapeutic strategy will probably improve. Here we describe a scalable platform for generating patient-derived cellular models and demonstrate that these personalized models can be used for preclinical evaluation of patient-specific ASOs. We describe protocols for delivery of ASOs to patient-derived organoid models and confirm reversal of disease-associated phenotypes in cardiac organoids derived from a patient with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) with a structural …

Breathing is a complex neuromuscular process vital to sustain life. In preclinical animal models, the study of respiratory motor control is primarily accomplished through neurophysiologic recordings and functional measurements of respiratory output. Neurophysiologic recordings that target neural or muscular output via direct nerve recordings or respiratory muscle electromyography (EMG) are commonly collected during anesthetized conditions. While offering tight control of experimental preparations, the use of anesthesia results in respiratory depression, may impact cardiovascular control, eliminates the potential to record volitional nonventilatory behaviors, and can limit translation. Since the diaphragm is a unique muscle which is rhythmically active and difficult to …

Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Pilot Study Of Naproxen During Dental Implant Osseointegration, Hattanas Kumchai, Daniel Taub, Ryan Tomlinson
Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Faculty Papers
OBJECTIVES: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are often prescribed following the placement of dental implants, but the effects of these drugs on the osseointegration process are poorly understood. We designed a randomized, placebo-controlled pilot study to quantitatively assess the effect of NSAIDs during early implant osseointegration.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects receiving a maxillary dental implant were randomized to take naproxen or placebo for 7 days after the surgery. Implant osseointegration was quantified using Resonance Frequency Analysis device. Implant-Stability-Quotient (ISQ) measurement was performed at the time of surgery and at follow-up visits 1, 4, and 16 weeks after surgery. Periapical radiographs were …

Current phototherapeutic approaches in cancer treatment include photothermal (PTT) and photodynamic (PDT) therapy, which harness light energy for the activation of a photoactive molecule resulting in the destruction of cancer cells. In PTT, generated local heat kills abnormal cells; whereas, in PDT, a series of biochemical reactions generating reactive oxygen species is responsible for cellular damage. However, a major concern arises in the cellular delivery of an optimal amount of a photoactive molecule required for the desired effect. In this work, we employed IR-820, a new Indocyanine green dye, in a liposomal formulation to maximize its delivery to cancer cells …
State Trust Land Revenue Diversification Through Conservation, Temple Stoellinger, Bryan Leonard, Travis Brammer, Shawn Regan, Jonathan Wood
State Trust Land Revenue Diversification Through Conservation, Temple Stoellinger, Bryan Leonard, Travis Brammer, Shawn Regan, Jonathan Wood
Utah Law Review
Western states oversee tens of millions of acres of state trust lands granted to them by the federal government more than a century ago to fund public education and other public services. Traditionally, these lands have been leased for energy development, timber harvesting, livestock grazing, and other consumptive uses to generate income for the trust’s beneficiaries. However, evolving markets and societal values present both novel opportunities and challenges for state trust land managers. This Article finds that states are not only permitted but obligated to consider revenue generation through conservation or other nonconsumptive uses to meet their enduring trust responsibilities. …
Litigating Predator Management, John A. Erwin
Litigating Predator Management, John A. Erwin
Utah Law Review
Despite significant gains over the last half-century, predators such as mountain lions, wolves, and bears are in the crosshairs once again. Scientific management, democratic principles, and the holding of wildlife resources in trust for the public are all foundational pillars of the North American Model for Wildlife Conservation, yet state wildlife agencies and legislatures routinely fail to uphold these values where predators are concerned. Many of these tensions were thrust into the public consciousness in 2020 when gray wolves were temporarily delisted under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), resulting in a disastrous wolf hunting season in Wisconsin. States that have …
The Puzzling Persistence Of Nature’S Rights, Sam Bookman
The Puzzling Persistence Of Nature’S Rights, Sam Bookman
Utah Law Review
The American experience of rights of Nature—the legal recognition of the rights and personhood of natural phenomena—presents a puzzle. On the one hand, no court has ever recognized such rights. Rights of Nature laws are routinely struck down and have proven impossible to enforce. On the other hand, dozens of communities, including municipalities and Native American tribes, continue to enforce them while scholars debate them endlessly. Why do rights of Nature persist?
Through analysis of 119 laws and 32 interviews with rights of Nature activists, I offer the first empirically-grounded answer to this question. Rights of Nature persist because of …
Assessing Vegetation Changes And Ecosystem Impacts Of Invasive Species In Florida's Water Conservation Area 3a (2004–2024) Using Landsat Data, Gideon Tandoh
Research, Papers & Creative Work
The spread of invasive species is a concrete problem, threatening biodiversity, ecosystem integrity, and the functional status of wetlands. As these species continue to advance, it is crucial to assess their spread as well as management success through the more sophisticated invasive monitoring methodologies. This research examines the change in vegetation communities and the spread of invasive plants in the Water Conservation Area 3A (WCA-3A) using Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifiers on time series Landsat images. Unlike traditional pixel-based methods, OBIA enhances classification accuracy by incorporating spatial, spectral, and contextual information, enabling precise differentiation between …

Analysis Of 26 Studies Of The Impact Of Coconut Oil On Lipid Parameters: Beyond Total And Ldl Cholesterol, Mary T. Newport, Fabian M. Dayrit

Coconut oil (CNO) is often characterized as an “artery-clogging fat” because it is a predominantly saturated fat that ostensibly raises total cholesterol (TChol) and LDL cholesterol (LDL-C). Whereas previous analyses assessed CNO based on the relative effects on lipid parameters against other fats and oils, this analysis focuses on the effects of CNO itself. Here, we review the literature on CNO and analyze 984 lipid profile data sets from 26 CNO studies conducted over the past 40 years. This analysis shows considerable heterogeneity among CNO studies regarding participant selection, the amount consumed, and the study duration. The analysis reveals that, …
Reviving The Golden Age: Exploring Will Eisner's Legacy Through The Creation Of A Multiversal Sequential Art Story, Levi Atkins
Reviving The Golden Age: Exploring Will Eisner's Legacy Through The Creation Of A Multiversal Sequential Art Story, Levi Atkins
Theses
Levi Atkins’ thesis explores the legacy of Will Eisner, a foundational figure in comic book history, through the creation of a multiversal sequential art story. The project combines a seven-page black-and-white comic with a scholarly analysis of Eisner’s storytelling techniques, focusing on his public domain characters from the Golden Age of Comics. Atkins examines how Eisner’s innovations—such as dynamic panel design, cinematic pacing, and genre blending—can inspire modern narratives. By reimagining characters like The Flame and Dollman within a multiverse framework, the thesis both honors Eisner’s legacy and demonstrates how historical comic forms can evolve to engage contemporary readers.

Living Act 31: Perspectives From Bayfield, Wisconsin, Brian Boyd, Rebecca Boyd, Beth Dahl, Rick Erickson, Cate Williams, Doug Adams
The Rural Educator
In this article, we discuss the teaching of Indigenous land sovereignty, history, and culture, commonly referred to as Act 31, in the School District of Bayfield in Bayfield, Wisconsin. Since the legislative mandate in 1991, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction has strongly recommended that Wisconsin students receive instruction related to Act 31 twice in elementary school and once in high school. However, because Act 31 is not strictly enforced, there is uneven implementation throughout the state. At the School District of Bayfield, teaching Act 31 is mainstreamed in the curriculum. Here, five teachers offer their vignette, or story, on …
