Khazanah: John Austin, Atip Latipulhayat

Padjadjaran Jurnal Ilmu Hukum (Journal of Law)

Pengendalian Pemberian Hak Guna Usaha Atas Tanah Sebagai Upaya Pencegahan Kerusakan Hutan Karena Perambahan Kawasan Hutan Yang Dilakukan Oleh Perkebunan, Yusuf Saepul Zamil Feb 2025

Pengendalian Pemberian Hak Guna Usaha Atas Tanah Sebagai Upaya Pencegahan Kerusakan Hutan Karena Perambahan Kawasan Hutan Yang Dilakukan Oleh Perkebunan, Yusuf Saepul Zamil

Padjadjaran Jurnal Ilmu Hukum (Journal of Law)

Microbial Source Tracking Protocols For Differentiation Of Fecal Bacteria From Cow, Deer, And Horse, Nika Shams, Michael Beach Feb 2025

Microbial Source Tracking Protocols For Differentiation Of Fecal Bacteria From Cow, Deer, And Horse, Nika Shams, Michael Beach

Symposium of Student Scholars

Microbial source tracking (MST) attempts to identify specific animal sources of fecal contamination in the environment. While traditional fecal coliform enumeration can give a general measure of contamination, the specificity imparted by modern MST provides a more informative assessment of contaminants and their likelihood to affect human health outcomes.

We have been developing an MST system that detects DNA biomarkers from the gram-negative bacterial genus Bacteroides and the family Lachnospiraceae. They are strict anaerobes found in large quantities in the intestines of animals. Unlike E. coli or Enterococci, host-specific strains of Bacteroides and Lachnospiraceae exist. To this end, we …

Transcription Factor Binding And Discovery Of Novel Gene In The Opportunistic Human Pathogen, Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Alaina Westee Feb 2025

Transcription Factor Binding And Discovery Of Novel Gene In The Opportunistic Human Pathogen, Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Alaina Westee

Symposium of Student Scholars

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) is a gram-negative, ubiquitously-found bacterium that primarily causes nosocomial, or hospital-borne, infections within immunocompromised patients. Therefore, it has been deemed a critical priority pathogen by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC), generating a need for research on its fundamental biology. The Van Dyke laboratory focuses on proteins called transcription factors, which promote or repress gene expression to regulate an organism’s functioning. We are specifically studying the cadmium-responsive transcription factor, CadR, due to the importance of metals in virulence and the lack of information on PA’s response to metal fluctuations. We intend …

Thor: An Evolution, Regan Cerlanek, Rachael Vause

Symposium of Student Scholars

Mythology today serves as a vehicle for storytelling, just as it did for ancient societies. These sacred tales continue to provide role models, express the core values of their respective cultures, answer timeless questions and serve as a moral guide for each generation. Myths are rewritten and retold time and time again, evolving to encapsulate modern beliefs, but often still staying true to their core. Many myths have made their way into popular culture and the heroes in these tales of old become icons, fan-favorites, and household names; namely, Thor the God of Thunder. This study explores and compares the …

Survey Of Mosquito Larval Habitats At The Ksu Field Station, Rose Sofia, Eli Lovvorn, Aspen Hartman, Andrew Haddow

Symposium of Student Scholars

The greater Atlanta metropolitan area hosts numerous mosquito species that are nuisance biters and can transmit arthropod-borne diseases to humans. We surveyed the Kennesaw State University (KSU) Field Station – an incredibly biodiverse location – where student, staff, and faculty-led groups engage in outdoor research and teaching activities. The KSU Field Station located in Cobb County, GA is a heavily trafficked 25-acre property that may attract various mosquito species capable of transmitting pathogens to humans and animals alike. On August 27th, 2024, our team investigated the KSU Field Station to quantify and record potential water-holding containers that serve as mosquito …

Performing Protest, Performing Memory: Speech Act Theory And January 6, Mary Lynne Gasaway Hill Feb 2025

Performing Protest, Performing Memory: Speech Act Theory And January 6, Mary Lynne Gasaway Hill

Faculty Scholarship

In daily life, memory performs a staggering array of tasks. It offers reassurance, validation, legitimation, and approval. It transgresses boundaries and polices them. It confirms understandings and undermines them. It warms our hearts and chills our blood. In the realm of protest, as this article will show, memory works through intentional language use. In the context of activism, acts of memory are often performative: they aim not just to restate the status quo, but to change something about it. This chapter operationalises J.L. Austin’s Speech Act Theory (1994, SAT) as a lens through which to examine how the contentious discourse …

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Abstract Urban areas are foci for the introduction of non-native plant species, and they often act as launching sites for invasions into the wider environment. Although interest in biological invasions in urban areas is growing rapidly, and the extent and complexity of problems associated with invasions in these systems have increased, data on the composition and numbers of non-native plants in urbanized areas remain scattered and idiosyncratic. We assembled data from multiple sources to create the Global Urban Biological Invasions Compendium (GUBIC) for vascular plants representing 553 urban centres from 61 countries across every continent except Antarctica. The GUBIC repository …

Non-Invasive Real-Time Pulsed Doppler Assessment Of Blood Flow In Mouse Ophthalmic Artery, Iraida Sharina, Radwa Awad, Soren Cobb, Emil Martin, Sean P Marrelli, Anilkumar K Reddy

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Non-invasive and high-temporal resolution methods for characterizing blood flow in mouse cranial arteries, such as the ophthalmic artery (OphA), are lacking. We present an application of pulsed Doppler ultrasound to provide real-time, non-invasive measurement of blood flow velocity in the OphA through an identified soft tissue window in the mouse head. We confirmed the identity of the artery and mapped its origin from the internal carotid artery by a combination of microcomputed tomography (microCT) vascular imaging and transient occlusion of the internal carotid artery. Application of our approach demonstrated sex differences in the OphA vasodilative response to agonists. We also …
