Global terrestrial and ocean surface temperatures continue to reach record levels, resulting in heat waves, drought, and prolonged heat stress experienced by vegetation in many regions. In 2023-2024, coastal terrestrial ecosystems in Western Australia were particularly affected, experiencing their driest and hottest summer since observations began in the early 1900s. Banksia woodlands are a threatened ecological community in this region that are endangered by the cumulative impacts of climate change, clearing and changing groundwater regimes, the last of which is strongly influenced by the dual use of groundwater resources by the ecosystem and by the ∼2 million people in the …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This paper presents a pioneering analysis of a distinctive engraved motif from the Pilbara region: the fat-tailed macropod (kangaroo). This stylistic analysis has used a combination of conventional qualitative and multivariate techniques with less commonly deployed geometric morphometrics analysis (GMA). Focusing on a distinctive engraved motif in Australia’s northwest, this study has quantified the stylistic characteristics of the fat-tailed macropod depictions by identifying the significant attributes that contribute to this motif’s schema. By using both multivariate analysis and GMA software, we have developed a more nuanced understanding of the synchronic and diachronic dimensions of this deep-time indigenous artistic tradition. Differing …

With the rapid emergence of high-quality generative artificial intelligence (“AI”), some have advocated for mandatory disclosure when the technology is used to generate new text, images, or video. But the precise harms posed by nontransparent uses of generative AI have not been fully explored. While the use of the technology to produce material that masquerades as factual (“deepfakes”) is clearly deceptive, this Article focuses on a more ambiguous area: the consumer’s interest in knowing whether works of art or entertainment were created using generative AI. In the markets for creative content—fine art, books, movies, television, music, and the like—producers have …

Ukrainian Internally Displaced Persons And Their Journey Of Christian Hope, Pamela A. Tuason
Ukrainian Internally Displaced Persons And Their Journey Of Christian Hope, Pamela A. Tuason
Loyola Papers
This paper examines eighteen narratives of Ukrainian internally displaced persons (IDPs) during the ongoing war and interprets them through the lens of Christian hope as articulated by Jürgen Moltmann. Using Paul Ricoeur’s threefold mimetic theory—prefiguration, configuration, and refiguration—the study analyzes how personal stories reveal theological meanings embedded in experiences of suffering, trauma, and displacement. The narratives highlight the role of history in displacement, the capacity of traumatized persons to reinterpret suffering through hope, and the longing to regain home. The study also proposes a model for the theological study of migrant narratives, contributing to migration theology and to discussions on …

Testing The Proteus Effect In Autistic And Neurotypical Participants, Chris Fullwood, Liam Cross, Gray Atherton, Darren Chadwick
School of Psychology
This study examined the Proteus effect in autistic and neurotypical participants via the video game, The Sims. Thirty-two participants (16 autistic, 16 neurotypical) participated in a free-play session of The Sims, playing as either an attractive or unattractive avatar. In line with predictions, participants who had played as the attractive avatar negotiated for a significantly larger share of a fictional pot of money during a post-play economic game. Further, participants who had used the attractive avatar engaged in significantly more exercise activities in-game and flirted more often with nonplayable characters. While there was some evidence to suggest that autistic people …

IntroductionBats, known as main reservoirs for coronaviruses such as SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2, carry these viruses asymptomatically thanks to their unique immune systems. These viruses can spill over to humans through direct contact or intermediate hosts, as observed in the cases of SARS and COVID-19. Despite the significant public health implications, research on bat-related viral zoonoses remains inadequate in Algeria due to insufficient surveillance and funding. Additionally, the ecological diversity of Algerian bats is still largely unexplored, resulting in knowledge gaps. Therefore, investigating bat coronaviruses within the One Health framework in Algeria provides a holistic approach to understanding and mitigating the …

Although the precise underlying cause(s) of autism spectrum disorder remain unclear, more than 1000 rare genetic variations are associated with the condition. For many people living with profound autism, this genetic heterogeneity has impeded the identification of common biological targets for therapy development for core and comorbid traits that include significant impairments in social communication and repetitive and restricted behaviors. A substantial number of genes associated with autism encode proteins involved in signal transduction and synaptic transmission that are critical for brain development and function. CAMK4 is an emerging risk gene for autism spectrum disorder that encodes the CaMK4 (calcium/calmodulin-dependent …

T-box transcription factors are a group of evolutionarily conserved T-box-containing regulators of mesoderm specification and development. Heterozygous single nucleotide variants (SNVs) or copy-number variant (CNV) deletions involving dosage-sensitive TBX4 have been associated with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), ischiocoxopodopatellar syndrome with or without PAH, and lethal lung developmental disorders (LLDDs), including acinar dysplasia (AcDys), congenital alveolar dysplasia (CAD), and other unspecified primary pulmonary hypoplasias. Loss- and gain-of-function variants have been proposed to cause pediatric PAH and LLDDs, and adult forms of PAH, respectively. Of more than 50 missense SNVs scattered across the entire TBX4, only three have been reported in patients …

Vaginal fibrosis induced by cancer therapy continues to take a physical and psychoemotional burden. To advance the efforts to generate a reproducible and cost-effective animal model, we tested the effect of repeated bleomycin instillations with mucosal layer disruption on induction of vaginal fibrosis. Tissue samples collected at various time points were analyzed for fibrosis-related gene expression changes and collagen content. Low (1.5 U/kg) and high-dose (2.5 U/kg) bleomycin instillations alone did not induce fibrosis, but when high-dose bleomycin was combined with epithelial disruption, increased profibrotic gene expression and trichrome staining were observed. To evaluate spatial and temporal changes in the …

Early Life Epigenetics And Childhood Outcomes: A Scoping Review, Srirupa Hari Gopal, Theresa Alenghat, Mohan Pammi
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Epigenetics is the study of changes in gene expression, without a change in the DNA sequence that are potentially heritable. Epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation, histone modifications, and small non-coding RNA (sncRNA) changes have been studied in various childhood disorders. Causal links to maternal health and toxin exposures can introduce epigenetic modifications to the fetal DNA, which can be detected in the cord blood. Cord blood epigenetic modifications provide evidence of in-utero stressors and immediate postnatal changes, which can impact both short and long-term outcomes in children. The mechanisms of these epigenetic changes can be leveraged for prevention, early …

Introduction: Physical exercise is a primary defense against age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease (AD).
Methods: We conducted single-nucleus transcriptomic and chromatin accessibility analyses (snRNA-seq and snATAC-seq) on the hippocampus of mice carrying mutations in the amyloid precursor protein gene (APPNL-G-F) following prolonged voluntary wheel-running exercise.
Results: Exercise mitigates amyloid-induced changes in transcriptome and chromatin accessibility through cell type-specific regulatory networks converging on growth factor signaling, particularly the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signaling. The beneficial effects of exercise on neurocognition can be blocked by pharmacological inhibition of EGFR and its downstream PI3K signaling. Exercise leads to elevated levels of …

Inequities within Indonesia's labor system remain a prominent issue, particularly in terms of fair access and protection for all segments of the workforce. As digital media continues to evolve, critiques of labor policy are increasingly expressed through new mediums, including satirical animations. This study aims to explore how the satirical animated videos from the YouTube channel Tekotok represent critiques of labor policy using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and public sentiment analysis. A mixed-methods approach is employed, combining Fairclough’s three-dimensional model for narrative analysis with the IndoBERT model to classify sentiment in 875 YouTube comments. The results demonstrate that Tekotok’s animations …

Modulating immune function is a critical strategy in cancer and atherosclerosis treatments. For cancer, boosting or maintaining the immune system is crucial to prevent tumor growth. However, in vascular disease, mitigating immune responses can decrease inflammation and slow atherosclerosis progression. Anti-inflammatory therapy, therefore, presents a unique dilemma for cancer survivors: while it may decrease cardiovascular risk, it might also promote cancer growth and metastasis by suppressing the immune response. Senescence presents a potentially targetable solution to this challenge; senescence increases the risk of both cancer therapy resistance and vascular disease. Exercise, notably, shows promise in delaying this premature senescence, potentially …

The endolysosomal system plays a crucial role in maintaining cellular homeostasis and promoting organism fitness. The pH of its acidic compartments is a crucial parameter for proper function, and it is dynamically influenced by both intracellular and environmental factors. Here, we present a method based on fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) for quantitatively analyzing the pH profiles of acidic endolysosomal compartments in diverse types of primary mammalian cells and in live organism Caenorhabditis elegans. This FLIM-based method exhibits high sensitivity in resolving subtle pH differences, thereby revealing heterogeneity within a cell and across cell types. This method enables rapid …

Aims: Among individuals presenting to the emergency department (ED) with chest pain, clinical uncertainty surrounds the appropriate identification of non-myocardial infarction (MI) individuals who would most benefit from objective functional/anatomical testing (e.g. imaging). We applied a proteomic biomarker discovery approach to identify novel candidates reflecting coronary artery disease (CAD) induced ischaemia that could translate to measurement in clinical samples.
Methods and results: Mass spectroscopy (MS) of perfusate from an isolated rat heart model of cardiac ischaemia identified >100 novel protein biomarkers. A prominent candidate, insulin-like growth factor binding protein (IGFBP-3), was then interrogated for its ability to identify CAD-related ischaemia …
