Identifying Herbicides To Manage Weeds In A Buckwheat Cover Crop And For The Control Of Volunteers, Taylor Randell-Singleton, Hannah E. Wright-Smith, Lavesta C. Hand, Jenna C. Vance, A. Stanley Culpepper Mar 2025

Identifying Herbicides To Manage Weeds In A Buckwheat Cover Crop And For The Control Of Volunteers, Taylor Randell-Singleton, Hannah E. Wright-Smith, Lavesta C. Hand, Jenna C. Vance, A. Stanley Culpepper

Horticulture Faculty Publications and Presentations

Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) is a fast-growing plant that quickly produces a dense groundcover. The utilization of buckwheat as a cover crop in vegetable production could be beneficial to Georgia producers, however for successful adoption, weed control in the cover crop coupled with control of buckwheat volunteers must be achievable. A preemergence (PRE) and a postemergence (POST) experiment were each conducted three times in Ty Ty, GA (2020-2021) addressing these objectives. In the PRE study, acetochlor at 0.56 lb ai acre(-1) injured buckwheat up to 16% without negatively influencing growth, suggesting potential for use in buckwheat for weed control. Awful, Yet Awe-Full: The Sublime Dystopia Of Blade Runner 2049, Charles E. Butt Mar 2025

Awful, Yet Awe-Full: The Sublime Dystopia Of Blade Runner 2049, Charles E. Butt

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Blockbuster dystopian sci-fi features stories of environmental collapse, authoritarian governments, out of control corporations, unbounded consumerism, and other awful possibilities. Scholars of science fiction broadly agree that this genre explores collective fears, anxieties, and speculations about the present and future. At the same time, film scholars have established that dystopian sci-fi cinema is compelling, and audiences respond to their effects-driven visuals, photorealistic mise-en-scene, and dramatic narratives. This creates an apparent paradox: Blockbuster cinematic aesthetics portray undesirable worlds desirably. I resolve this paradox by arguing that the worldbuilding of spectacle-driven, dystopian sci-fi cinema is Romanticized. That is, the provocative style of …

Cirrhosis, a marker of severe liver diseases, limits future liver remnant (FLR) growth, preventing many cancer patients from undergoing surgery. While portal vein blockade (PVB) techniques are used to stimulate liver regeneration, 20-30% of patients still fail to achieve the required growth. Although mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy improves PVB, its efficacy is limited by poor cell retention. To address this, we utilized alginate hydrogels to deliver MSCs and improve their retention. MSCs were loaded in the hydrogel and injected intraportally in cirrhotic rats. Liver volume, weights, enzyme levels, and histology were monitored. Results showed that the hydrogel maintained 89.0 …

Barriers And Breakthroughs In The Evolution Of Aggregative Multicellularity, Israt Jahan Mar 2025

Barriers And Breakthroughs In The Evolution Of Aggregative Multicellularity, Israt Jahan

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The evolution of multicellular organization represents a key innovation in the history of life, yet fundamental questions remain about the evolutionary mechanisms that allowed some lineages to achieve remarkable complexity, while constrained others in their elaboration. The widely accepted single-cell bottleneck model provides a compelling explanation for the success of clonal multicellularity by reducing internal conflict and facilitating developmental integration. However, this perspective does not fully account for the stability and repeated evolution of aggregative multicellularity, where cooperation emerges among previously independent cells that may not be genetic relatives. Aggregative multicellularity demonstrates that the evolution of multicellularity is not a …

The Mechanistic Target Of Rapamycin Mediates Clostridium Perfringens-Induced Chicken Necrotic Enteritis Attenuated By Secondary Bile Acid Deoxycholic Acid, Mohit Bansal, Tahrir Alenezi, Ying Fu, Janashrit Shrestha, Ayidh Almansour, Hong Wang, Anamika Gupta, Rohana Liyanage, Xiaolun Sun

Clostridium perfringens is a prevalent gut bacterial pathogen in humans and animals. This study investigated the role of the mechanistic targets of rapamycin (mTOR) and deoxycholic acid (DCA) on C. perfringens intestinal infection. Chickens were sequentially infected with Eimeria maxima and received the mTOR inhibitor rapamycin and DCA. C. perfringens-induced necrotic enteritis (NE) was evaluated using body weight gain (BWG), histopathology, bile acids, pathogen colonization, cell infiltration and death, and gene expression. The significant difference of p < 0.05 was analyzed by one-way ANOVA and multiple comparisons. Notably, rapamycin strongly reduced the subclinical and clinical NE histopathologies. DCA and DCA combined with rapamycin alleviated clinical NE and BWG loss. Rapamycin, DCA, and DCA + rapamycin attenuated bile acid reduction in NE birds, and they also reduced immune cell infiltration into the intestinal lamina propria as well as immune cell migration in vitro. At molecular levels, DCA and DCA + rapamycin reduced proinflammatory IFN gamma, MMP9, IL23, and IL17 gene expression. Rapamycin, DCA, and DCA + rapamycin reduced NE-induced intestinal cell apoptosis. Together, these results suggest that mTOR signaling mediates C. perfringens-induced ileitis, and combining mTOR inhibition and DCA improves the intervention efficacy against NE ileitis and BWG loss.

Deepfakes And Shallow Laws: Regulating Distorted Narratives In The Political Cyberspace, Shimona Mohan, Sarthak Wadhwa

Indian Journal of Law and Technology

With a sizable section of the global population witnessing electoral churn, protests, and resistance movements in the past couple of years, this is clearly a watershed moment for modern democracies vis-à-vis technological advancements. Electoral canvassing in these democracies has expanded its footprint in the digital space, be it through social media or navigating the general contours of anonymity, engagement, and misinformation that govern our online worlds. In this context, the advent of deepfakes in the recent past, and the exponential evolution of the technology both for outreach and disruption, has invited acute regulatory attention and intervention. However, traditional policy design …

Ocular Surface Glycocalyx In Health And Disease, Rafael Martínez-Carrasco, Ajay Sharma Mar 2025

Ocular Surface Glycocalyx In Health And Disease, Rafael Martínez-Carrasco, Ajay Sharma

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

The glycocalyx is a dynamic carbohydrate-enriched structure that forms a dense coating on the surface of animal cells, including those at the ocular surface. It plays a critical role in maintaining cellular functions and it has a significant influence in disease processes. At the ocular surface, glycoproteins such as mucins are essential for hydration, lubrication, and barrier protection. Proteoglycans and glycolipids contribute to cell signaling, and mediate interactions with pathogens. Alterations in the glycocalyx are implicated in a spectrum of ocular conditions, including dry eye disease, ocular allergies, infections, and systemic diseases such as Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and diabetes mellitus. …
