Computational Methods And Optimization For Naturalistic Functional Brain Mapping Using Diffuse Optical Tomography, Morgan Fogarty Mar 2025

Computational Methods And Optimization For Naturalistic Functional Brain Mapping Using Diffuse Optical Tomography, Morgan Fogarty

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Naturalistic neuroimaging has significantly advanced our understanding of the brain in everyday situations. Stimulus designs that previously targeted individual brain regions are now being replaced by activities such as watching movies, engaging in conversations, and interacting with virtual reality environments. However, traditional functional neuroimaging techniques like functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) are inherently unnaturalistic, as participants must lay down and remain still within the magnet's bore. Consequently, these naturalistic paradigms require an equally naturalistic neuroimaging modality. High-density diffuse optical tomography (HD-DOT) offers a wearable alternative to fMRI by utilizing overlapping optical measurements to densely sample cortical brain activity. HD-DOT has …

A Study To Identify The Causal Rare Genetic Variants In Primary Open And Closed Angle Glaucoma, Pseudoexfoliation Syndrome, And Associated Glaucoma, Suganya K

Theses and Dissertations

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is the second most common cause of blindness globally typically diagnosed with a triad of clinical symptoms of increased intraocular pressure (IOP) with associated optic disc, optic nerve head (ONH) changes, and visual field defects. Genetic and environmental factors are some of the strong aetiology factors for glaucoma and identification of these factors has a potential implication in the management of the disease and its outcome. There is a paradigm shift towards understanding the genetics of glaucoma, wherein the variants in the nuclear, mitochondrial genome and other regulatory regions are being identified as contributing risk factors.

Small mustelids are difficult to survey due to their low density and cryptic nature. Population status of North American weasels (Mustela erminea, Mustela nivalis, and Neogale frenata) are believed to be in decline, but there are no standardized monitoring protocols to evaluate their status. To support weasel monitoring, we compared the attractiveness of various combinations of baits and lures to weasels in sites located throughout the eastern and central USA. We baited a total of 122 clusters of 4 camera traps, across 14 states, with random combinations of 4 baits and 3 scent lures in the winters of 2022 and …

Barriers And Breakthroughs In The Evolution Of Aggregative Multicellularity, Israt Jahan Mar 2025

Barriers And Breakthroughs In The Evolution Of Aggregative Multicellularity, Israt Jahan

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The evolution of multicellular organization represents a key innovation in the history of life, yet fundamental questions remain about the evolutionary mechanisms that allowed some lineages to achieve remarkable complexity, while constrained others in their elaboration. The widely accepted single-cell bottleneck model provides a compelling explanation for the success of clonal multicellularity by reducing internal conflict and facilitating developmental integration. However, this perspective does not fully account for the stability and repeated evolution of aggregative multicellularity, where cooperation emerges among previously independent cells that may not be genetic relatives. Aggregative multicellularity demonstrates that the evolution of multicellularity is not a …

Rheological, Interfacial, And Filtration Behavior Of Lignocellulosic Nanomaterials In Suspension And Emulsion Drilling Fluids, Meen Sung Koo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In recent years, the rheological aspects of suspensions/emulsions applied by cellulose nanomaterials (CNMs) have been gained considerable interests due to high gel-forming properties ascribed by hydrophilicity, crystallinity, ease functionalization, and high aspect ratio. Introducing residual lignin in CNMs (LCNMs) seemed to be capable of achieving various advantages in the application of CNMs ascribed by hydrophobicity, binding effects, and abundant aromatic groups derived from complexity of lignin. This dissertation dedicates to the characterizations of (L)CNMs, and rheological properties of (L)CNMs applied fluids (i.e., suspension and emulsion). In the suspension system, the presence of lignin in LCNMs decreased gel strength, viscosity, and …

Navigating The Low Covid-19 Vaccination Rate Nexus: Biblical Interpretations & Practices Of Pentecostal Christians In Dmv, Patricia Mbah Nchamukong Mar 2025

Navigating The Low Covid-19 Vaccination Rate Nexus: Biblical Interpretations & Practices Of Pentecostal Christians In Dmv, Patricia Mbah Nchamukong

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The development and release of a vaccine during an epidemic is aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of infection, transmission, and spread of the disease. However, this does not always guarantee the acceptance of the vaccine by the entire population, as was the case with the COVID-19 vaccine. The low COVID-19 vaccine rate within the Black Pentecostal Christian community in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) is a public health concern. Some factors that might have influenced the decision of this population to accept or reject the vaccine have been linked to politics, anti-COVID-19 vaccine sentiments, and religion. The purpose …

Soft Robotic Brittle Star Shows The Influence Of Mass Distribution On Underwater Walking, Zach J. Patterson Mar 2025

Soft Robotic Brittle Star Shows The Influence Of Mass Distribution On Underwater Walking, Zach J. Patterson

Faculty Scholarship

Most walking organisms tend to have relatively light limbs and heavy bodies in order to facilitate rapid limb motion. However, the limbs of brittle stars (Class Ophiuroidea) are primarily comprised of dense skeletal elements, with potentially much higher mass and density compared to the body disk. To date, little is understood about how the relatively unique distribution of mass in these animals influences their locomotion. In this work, we use a brittle star inspired soft robot and computational modeling to examine how the distribution of mass and density in brittle stars affects their movement. The soft robot is fully untethered, …

Triclabendazole (TCBZ) is the primary treatment for fascioliasis, a global foodborne zoonosis caused by Fasciola hepatica. Widespread resistance to TCBZ (TCBZ-R) in livestock and a rapid rise in resistant human infections are significant concerns. To understand the genetic basis of TCBZ-R, we sequenced the genomes of 99 TCBZ-sensitive (TCBZ-S) and 210 TCBZ-R adult flukes from 146 bovine livers in Cusco, Peru. We identify genomic regions of high differentiation (F
