Profiles Of East Frisian (German) Pioneers Who Settled The Prairie In Turner County, South Dakota, Derek M. Heeren

Genealogy Resources

Summary

Hundreds of East Frisian Pioneers from northwest Germany came to the Lennox-Chancellor East Frisian settlement in southeastern South Dakota at the end of the nineteenth century. Their ethnic heritage and pioneering spirit are illustrated with stories of the Plucker, Carlson, DeNeui, and Heeren families. The events of the 1870s, 1880s, and 1890s are highlighted with a focus on the Pioneer Generation (born between 1840 and 1869). This genealogy paper is written primarily for descendants of East Frisians who are studying family history, but it may be of interest to anyone who wonders what life was like for the Pioneers …

The Distribution And Ecology Of Native Irish Tree Species, Yuchen Hu, Jeanne Sumrall Mar 2025

The Distribution And Ecology Of Native Irish Tree Species, Yuchen Hu, Jeanne Sumrall

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Ireland’s native woodlands have greatly declined due to deforestation, farming, and urbanization, with less than 1% of the land now covered by native forests. This study looks at the distribution of native trees like oak, ash, birch, and yew, and their role in biodiversity. Native woodlands are mainly in the western and northern parts of Ireland, while areas with more farming and development have lost most of their native forests.

The study also highlights threats from invasive species and diseases like ash dieback. Forest fragmentation reduces their ecological value and harms wildlife. While restoration efforts have made some progress, the …

Exploring Galway Bay And Connemara: Balancing Tourism Growth With Nature’S Protection, Rongtian Feng, Jeanne Sumrall

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

This poster observes how Galway Bay and Connemara manage large tourist numbers while maintaining nature conserved, according to data from Connemara National Park, Galway County Council, two research papers, and a 2017 visitor plan. We researched the ways that tourists affect the land, which rules help, and green ideas to try, learning that too many tourists—over 200,000 to Connemara Park in 2019—hurt the land, Galway Bay lost animals because of trash, and while cleaner water helps, caring about money more hurts nature more. A map, timeline, and graph show the problem. We found out tourism is a source of income …

Wildlife surveillance programs often use serological data to monitor exposure to pathogens. Diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of a serological assay quantify the true positive and negative rates of the diagnostic assay, respectively. However, an assay’s accuracy can be affected by wild animals’ pathogen exposure history and quality of the sample collected, requiring separate estimates of an assay’s detection ability for wild-sampled animals where an animal’s true disease status is unknown (referred to hereafter as sampling sensitivity and specificity). We assessed the sampling sensitivity and specificity of a Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) surrogate virus neutralization test (sVNT) and …

Aspen Health On National Forests In The Northern Rocky Mountain Region (2008/2009 To 2024), James T. Blodgett, Kurt K. Allen, Megan Wilson, Bradley Lalande Mar 2025

Aspen Health On National Forests In The Northern Rocky Mountain Region (2008/2009 To 2024), James T. Blodgett, Kurt K. Allen, Megan Wilson, Bradley Lalande

Aspen Bibliography

Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) is a widely distributed species in the western United States, but in the northern Rocky Mountain Region it is a rare forest component. In national forests (NF) of the northern Rocky Mountain Region this species comprises only 1% of the Bighorn, 3% of the Black Hills, and 1% of the Shoshone cover types (DeBlander 2002, Menlove 2008, Witt 2008). Since aspen forests provide increased species richness, support wildlife, are an important component of watersheds, and have aesthetic value, there are concerns regarding the health of this relatively rare forest cover type.

Deep Learning Function Implications For Handwritten Character Recognition Using Improved Mean Square Error Function, Bahera H. Nayef, Siti Norul Huda Sheikh Abdullah, Manal Mohammed

Baghdad Science Journal

Loss functions are used for estimating the accuracy of the classification models in Machine Learning. The error loss value measures whether the predicted labels match the true labels or are close to them. Handwritten character recognition is a pattern recognition problem. The progression of pattern recognition applications for offline image classification is rapidly improved by using deep learning techniques. Convolution Neural Networks (CNN) and the activation function are the most commonly used in deep learning. In addition, different loss functions are used to evaluate the performance of the model such as Categorical Cross-Entropy (CCE) and Mean Square Error (MSE). In …

Air Traffic Trends And Uav Safety: Leveraging Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast Data For Predictive Risk Mitigation, Prasad Pothana, Paul Snyder, Sreejith Vidhyadharan, Michael Ullrich, Jack Thornby

Petroleum Engineering Student Publications

With the significant potential of Unmanned Aircraft Vehicles (UAVs) extending throughout various fields and industries, their proliferation raises concerns regarding potential risks within the national airspace system (NAS). To enhance the safe and efficient integration of UAVs into airport environments, this paper presents an analysis of temporal statistical patterns in flight traffic, the predictive modeling of future traffic trends using machine learning, and the identification of optimal time windows for UAV operations within airports. The framework was developed using historical Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) data obtained from the OpenSky Network. Historical flight data from Class B, C, and D airports …

The Effects Of Exposure To Ultraviolet Light On The Activity Of Catalase In Internal And External Tissues Of The Sea Urchin Lytechinus Variegatus, Ellerie C. Heinzmann Mar 2025

The Effects Of Exposure To Ultraviolet Light On The Activity Of Catalase In Internal And External Tissues Of The Sea Urchin Lytechinus Variegatus, Ellerie C. Heinzmann

Undergraduate Theses

Exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) can have negative impacts on organisms that are exposed to it. The sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus is an organism that resides in shallow waters which can experience exposure to UVR. One negative impact that can occur from UVR is an increase in production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) due to cell stress. In this experiment, two treatments were performed on L. variegatus in the adult state. The first included an exposure to UV-B radiation for 8 hours, and the second was an 8-hour UV-B exposure with temperatures at 30 °C to replicate environmental conditions in …

Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Planning Using Hybrid D* Lite With Ppo And Td3: Experimental Design And Performance Analysis, Matthew J. Rice Mar 2025

Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Planning Using Hybrid D* Lite With Ppo And Td3: Experimental Design And Performance Analysis, Matthew J. Rice

Undergraduate Theses

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) face significant challenges in underwater navigation, including generating smooth paths, avoiding obstacles, and adapting to complex conditions. This paper introduces a hybrid path-planning algorithm, D-RL*, that integrates the D* Lite algorithm for efficient initial pathfinding with Deep Reinforcement Learning methods to refine paths for smoother trajectories. The proposed approach addresses D* Lite's inability to produce continuous, smooth paths and baseline Reinforcement Learnings’ failures in environments requiring significant detours. Experimental results in four progressively complex environments highlight D-RL*’s ability to plan smoother paths than D* Lite while training in a shorter amount of time and generating shorter …

Cultivating Community: A Mixed-Methods Study Examining Community Literacy Practices In The Secondary Ela Classroom, Anna Heilers

Undergraduate Theses

Past research on the relationship between community literacy and schooling has emphasized how educators can use community-based prior knowledge to teach students the privileged literacies associated with academia. Some researchers have discussed the potential for university-community partnerships that are mutually beneficial, but few have explored possibilities for change in the high school setting. Utilizing 24 survey responses and 2 interviews, this study sought to answer the following questions: Do high school class experiences have any impact on students’ community literacies? If they do, do they support or hinder their growth? I analyzed data using a combination of correlational analysis, axial …

Saving Private Unfaithful: An Argument For Administrative Separation And Action In Lieu Of Criminalizing Extramarital Sexual Conduct, Annelise Burgess Mar 2025

Saving Private Unfaithful: An Argument For Administrative Separation And Action In Lieu Of Criminalizing Extramarital Sexual Conduct, Annelise Burgess

Washington and Lee Law Review Online

In order to keep America’s armed forces deadly, ESC must be decriminalized. The MCM’s 2019 update to start including non-heterosexual marriages and affairs tragically expands the reach of ESC. This Note presents new data on charging patterns of ESC in the Marines, highlighting the crime’s active use. ESC continues to overcompensate for behavior prejudicial to good order and discipline or service discrediting; this overcompensation results in subjecting non-prejudicial and non-service-discrediting behavior to criminal action, simultaneously infringing on service members’ constitutional rights and serving as fodder for public outcry. Military leaders should decriminalize ESC and alternatively penalize the behavior by administrative …
