Integrated Health Sciences Faculty Research

The long non-coding RNA EP300-AS1 (lncRNA EP300-AS1), identified as a potential regulatory factor in various cancers, remains underexplored in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). This study investigated EP300-AS1’s regulatory mechanisms in NPC, particularly its interaction with transcription factor AP-2 Gamma (TFAP2C) and its effect on cystatin E/M (CST6) expression. Employing clinical samples and NPC cell lines, we conducted in vitro and in vivo xenograft experiments to assess the impacts of modulating EP300-AS1 expression. Techniques such as CCK8, migration, scratch, apoptosis assays, cell cycle analysis, immunoblotting, and fluorescence experiments elucidated EP300-AS1’s role in NPC. The interaction between EP300-AS1 and TFAP2C in regulating CST6 …

Although periodontal disease (PD) is reported to be associated with changes in various genes and proteins in both invading bacteria and the host, its molecular mechanism of pathogenesis remains unclear. Changes in immune and inflammatory genes play a significant role in PD pathogenesis. Some reports relate alterations in cellular epigenetic patterns to PD characteristics, while several high-throughput analyses indicate thousands of differentially methylated genes in both PD patients and controls. Furthermore, changes in DNA methylation patterns in inflammation-related genes have been linked to the efficacy of periodontal therapy, as demonstrated by findings related to the cytochrome C oxidase II gene. …

Empathetic Teaching: Why Authentic Blind Representation In Curricula Matters, Olivia Thomakos Mar 2025

Empathetic Teaching: Why Authentic Blind Representation In Curricula Matters, Olivia Thomakos

Oral Presentations

Understanding the lived experience of blindness is challenging for sighted individuals. While literature can provide insights into this experience, many portrayals are written by sighted authors who rely on metaphor or their own fears of blindness. For blind authors, the challenge of connecting with sighted readers is compounded by the fact that reading itself is performed differently by sighted and non-sighted individuals. This essay explores how authentic authorship can foster empathy and understanding of blindness, and how introducing students to literature with genuine blind representation in school curricula can positively influence perceptions of blindness. Mark Paterson's article "Blindness, empathy, and …

Toward Integral Security: How Environmental Protection Was Incorporated Into The United Nations System And Why It Matters Today And Tomorrow, Patricia M. Mische Mar 2025

Toward Integral Security: How Environmental Protection Was Incorporated Into The United Nations System And Why It Matters Today And Tomorrow, Patricia M. Mische

The Journal of Social Encounters

How did the United Nations - an international organization built on 19th century worldviews and state-centric structures, integrate 21st century challenges of environmental protection into its mission and programs? The UN Charter includes no mandate for environmental protection. Ecological integrity was not included in the scope of peace and security held by member states when they ratified the UN Charter. Yet, despite this and other historical, philosophical and structural limitations, the UN became the leading body for the development of global environmental policy.

Social Solidarity & Philanthropy In African Contexts, Dennis Kilama, Patricia Snell Herzog, David P. King Mar 2025

Social Solidarity & Philanthropy In African Contexts, Dennis Kilama, Patricia Snell Herzog, David P. King

The Journal of Social Encounters

Within Western contexts, philanthropy has been conceptualized as formal and organizational, with less emphasis on its informal contours. This paper identifies social solidarity as crucial to understanding philanthropy in African contexts. The first section explores concepts of philanthropy, such as reciprocity and cooperation. Second, recognizing solidarity as a key aspect of philanthropy, we review how social solidarity has been theorized and studied. Third, we illustrate how philanthropy in Kenya and Uganda is embedded within specific contexts. Philanthropy can be found in horizontal (formal), vertical (informal), and hybrid forms. Alongside formal philanthropy, efforts to benefit others in Africa often emerge informally …

Why Here, Why Now: The Genesis Of A Native American Business Journal, Daniel Stewart Mar 2025

Why Here, Why Now: The Genesis Of A Native American Business Journal, Daniel Stewart

Indigenous Business & Public Administration

IBAPA is the culmination of a decades-long journey in which there has been much progress in the development of Native American economies, but still rather modest progress in the development of Native American academic theory in the fields of business and public administration. There are multiple reasons why academic progress has been sluggish. One of the primary reasons is the lack of business professors who publish research about our community. This journal seeks to address this problem straight on. The editorial provides background on our purpose.
